Thank You’ Photo Essay for Parkville Biomedical Precinct Workers
As part of the Metro Tunnel Creative Program in Parkville, a beautiful Thank You photo essay has been installed on the Grattan Street east site hoarding that faces Royal Parade, near the Royal Melbourne Hospital, to thank all the people in the Parkville Biomedical Precinct whose work is directly related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Metro Tunnel Creative Program was developed to maintain Melbourne’s vibrancy, liveability and public engagement during the construction impacts of the Metro Tunnel Project. The Creative Program features activities and events designed and led by a team of designers, curators and place managers dedicated to enhancing city life alongside the construction of the Metro Tunnel. Local photographer Phoebe Powell captured 52 people from the precinct to include in the photo essay. After completing a Bachelor of Arts in Photography at RMIT, Phoebe has gone on to a successful career in photography with clients ranging from boutique wineries to large aviation companies. Phoebe’s artistic statement for the project was: As a photographer, I use portraiture to speak to an audience. I am asking the viewer to take a moment and connect with the subject. This connection can be an opportunity for insight into the normally unknown or unnoticed. With these images, we are introduced to some of the dedicated individuals working to manage the pandemic and secure a safe future for us. At a time that can feel ambiguous and uncertain, our frontline healthcare workers and our clinicians and medical researchers can inspire confidence, and this series is a work of appreciation and acknowledgement.
