‘How can they call it murder’
Dr Harry Blutstein’s presentation is based on his latest book entitled, ‘How Can They Call it Murder’
In April 2021, Dr Harry Blutstein attended the trial of Barbara Eckersley, who was charged with murdering her 92-year-old mother by feeding her Nembutal, a drug often used for euthanising people. The Crown even acknowledged that she was motivated by “love and compassion.” In the absence of liberal dying-with-dignity laws, more mercy killings can be expected. Dr Blutstein will explore the legal and moral issues this case raises and suggest how the law can be reformed.
About the speaker:
Harry Blutstein is a Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne. Dr Blutstein has had various careers. Since 1972 he has been a freelance journalist, starting as an environmental writer for the Nation Review. Since then he has had feature articles and op-eds published in major national newspapers. He has also worked for the EPA for 27 years in senior positions, working on issues related to sustainable development.
Harry is also a natural storyteller and provides entertaining tales of various world topics.

This forum is free and open to all (and yes, you do not need a Membership of The Graduate Union to join us). We welcome any age, any discipline and any new ideas. Discussions are held in an informal and friendly atmosphere room.
The next forum is on Wednesday, 15th March and the topic is “Recycling plastic: what can we do to alleviate the problems being caused by our use of plastic and the apparent difficulty of recycling it.”
The Women’s Forum meets on the third Wednesday of each month at Graduate House. At the forum, everyone is welcome to speak. Only two rules need to be observed:
• Each person wanting to speak may do so for up to ten minutes without interruption, after which the session will transit to become an open discussion. Some attendees have preferred to join in at this stage where the discussion is general, having learnt something from the previous speakers.
• The other rule is that while regular attendance is encouraged, if something unavoidable comes up, there is no need to apologise, though of course we like to know how people are. And if we can help.
At every meeting we choose topics for future meetings. They are not particularly academic - just topics we have read about or heard about and would like to discuss in a friendly atmosphere, perhaps with people who are more informed than we are since we all have different backgrounds and experience.
We arrive in time for a 10.30am start, finish about 12noon and have lunch at the Graduate House dining room, if we want to. For the last meeting of the year, we bring interesting musings to share with the rest of the group.
We always welcome new members to have fun with us and sometimes to share surplus fruits, jams or anything homemade.
