Mr Graham Dudley Graham Dudley has led a life of books. To hear him talk about his love of books, book now!

Graham Dudley has an Honours degree in History from The University of Melbourne. He also has qualifications in Librarianship and Project Management from RMIT University.

A retired public servant, Graham has worked at The State Library, Arts Victoria and Local Government Victoria. In the latter position, he managed the State Government’s recurrent funding programmes for public libraries as well as policy development. Graham was closely involved in the resurgence of mechanics’ institutes in Victoria.

This work was recognised by Life Membership of the Mechanics’ Institutes of Victoria Inc. in 2006.

He retired from the public service in 2007.

Graham was a member of the Committee of the Friends of the Baillieu Library at The University of Melbourne for over 20 years including several years as President. Graham was made a Life Member of the Friends in 2013 upon his retirement.

Maintaining his links with the University, Graham attends meetings of the Honorary Research Fellows of the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies. He sits on the Committee of the Classical Association of Victoria and the Board of Friends of Libraries Australia.

CHAIRMAN’S COCKTAIL PARTY REVIEW Camaraderie, reflection and celebration were the themes of our annual Chairman’s Cocktail Party at Graduate House on the evening of Friday, 1st December, 2017.

This unifying and highly anticipated gathering was attended by 192 guests and hosted by Chairman, Councillor Rhys Watson, together with our President, Dr Ken V. Loughnan AO and our CEO/Head of College, Dr Kerry Bennett.

Graduate Union, Cr Rhys Watson, who welcomed Councillors and their spouses and partners. Cr Watson spoke about the essence of Graduate House as a stimulating hub to “Live, Learn and Meet”. Especially, a meeting of great minds. “Look around you. There might be a great mind right beside you,” he said.

Cr Watson introduced the 2017 M. V. Anderson Award, a tribute to Magnus Victor Anderson, a founding member of The Graduate Union in 1953. Dr Bennett lauded the “incredibly talented” recipients of the Award and announced that the specially commissioned Award medal went to Resident Members, Mr Shubham Rawal (in absentia), who is undertaking a Master of Engineering at The University of Melbourne, and Ms Zizhao (Imogen) She, who has completed a Master of Management (Accounting) at The University of Melbourne.

The M. V. Anderson Award recognises “achievement in a range of intellectual pursuits that require perseverance over a number of years and attaining important insights, and for their contribution to the collegial experience”.

Our talented culinary team transformed the Graduate House Dining Room into an epicurean wonderland with canapés, a magnificent seafood banquet table and decadent dessert table featuring a chocolate Christmas tree in the form of a profiterole tower decorated with strawberries. Our efficient and attentive functions team ensured a seamless supply of food and drinks throughout the night as guests mingled and reflected on the year that was.

WOMEN'S FORUM REVIEW Wednesday 15th November, 2017 Social Connections in the Contemporary World

Should there be demands on the technological abilities of those aged 50–60 plus? None of us have grown up with these devices! All attendees at the forum were in agreement with the fact that the over-50s will have trouble with modern technologies. There are limitations because of age and loss of information from family members, especially those from the younger generation.

There will be difficulties in contacting the close friends of people who have died if their family members do not know whom to contact. One needs to know how many really good friends they have and their family members need to know where to access this information. This is particularly important if one has been involved in some difficult areas (e.g., the hospital or in an emergency).

It is important to make sure that close family members know where to access significant information (e.g., copies of wills).

This information is important to family members who will have to deal with the affairs of other family members after their deaths. It is also important for the older age group to learn to use devices such as the iPad which provides information on how to deal with the ‘left-overs’ after the death of a family member.

Facebook is another quick and useful way of keeping in touch with friends and acquaintances.

These days we all have access to the advantages of new technologies, so perhaps we should consider the question — "who is making money out of this?"

Some difficulties come from new technologies, e.g one now can’t buy tickets while actually on public transport. One can’t check Myki credit before commencing a journey on public transport.

How do people get on with new technologies if they did not grow up with them — or worse, have not learnt how to use all the possiblilties that are offered? One survival hint for the over 60s — keep your own paper trail..

Learning new ways of doing things (e.g., technological advantages) will take time and energy. Again, this was not always accessible to the older age group or to people who left school at aged 14 and are jobless.

Information that has emerged during today's discussion (taping could be helpful) indicated that knowledge, time and patience are critical to exist comfortably in today's technological age.

All of us have tertiary qualifications — what about the members of our society who left school at 14 (even though they have grown up with modern devices)? Perhaps we need some years of student input?

We often get emails for Christmas and birthdays.

We seek assistance from built-in help to insert appropriate ‘apps’ such as COTA (Council for the Aging) and one needs to be a member of COTA to access this app. It is reasonable to join COTA, as this Council helps elderly people with new and emerging technologies.

The first Women's Forum for 2018 is on Wednesday, 21st February, 2018 at 10:00am for a 10:30am start.

MEMBERS’ CHRISTMAS PARTY REVIEW Santa Claus came to town at the Members’ Christmas Party on the evening of Friday, 15th December, 2017 to spread festive cheer and goodwill to all.

Our 103 guests quickly got into the spirit with Christmas carols playing during pre-dinner drinks and canapes at the Bar and in the Phillip Law Members’ Lounge.

Our long-time Resident Member (more than 20 years at Graduate House), Mr Tim Stephens once again donned his Santa suit to hand out lollies and a jolly “Ho, ho, ho” before guests sat down to a magnificent three-course dinner in the Dining Room at Graduate House.

For entrée, bountiful platters of seafood and mixed vegetables delighted diners as Mr Daniel Clark, our Operations Manager, displayed his other calling in life — as an entertaining MC. From the podium, Daniel welcomed The Graduate Union President, Dr Ken V. Loughnan AO, Councillors Molina Asthana, Mary Kelleher, Vincent Mirabelli and Keith Ryall, and their guests, and Resident Members.

We are grateful to the companies who donated generously for our raffle prizes: De Bortoli Wines, Espresso Vivo Coffee, John Barnes Locksmiths, M&J Chickens, Voyager Technology and Elite Fruit.

In an important milestone for The Graduate Union, regalia sashes were presented by the President to our two Inaugural Patrons, Ms Heather Kudeviita and Mr Neil Taylor, our esteemed long-serving Members who were announced as Inaugural Patrons at the Chairman’s Cocktail Party on 1st December, 2017.

The main course alternated with seasoned turkey breast with apricot and macadamia stuffing, and grilled salmon with pineapple salsa. The Christmas Trivia tested both sides of the brain with 12 general knowledge questions.

In case you didn’t know, a snowflake traditionally has six points.

Daniel, our MC, drew the competition winners. The ‘Lucky Bistro Feedback’ form prize was a $500 Coles and Myer voucher. Wine, chocolates, hampers and vouchers were also awarded to lucky raffle winners.

Dessert alternated with plum pudding with custard and brandy sauce, and a pistachio bavarois.

After dinner, guests mingled over coffee and farewelled 2017, the year that was. vvv

The highly coveted door prizes were awarded via ‘black magic’ — a black dot under one of the dessert spoons on each table. Jubilant winners took home the flower centrepiece, a vibrant red poinsettia.

CARE FOR AFRICA FOUNDATION Mrs Diana Butler OAM, Co-Founder and CEO The Graduate Union continues to be an international force for good by connecting altruistic role models in a circle of charitable goodwill via Carlton, Tasmania and Africa.

Mrs Diana Butler OAM, CoFounder and CEO of the Care for Africa Foundation, travelled from Launceston, Tasmania to attend the Chairman’s Cocktail Party at Graduate House on 1st December, 2017. At the party, Diana forged valuable connections for her charity, whose vision is to create “thriving communities with access to clean water, health care and opportunities for growth”.

One of the charity’s core values is “encouraging and providing opportunities for philanthropy in Australia and Tanzania.” That’s how Diana created a mutually beneficial network, befriending our President, Dr Ken V. Loughnan AO, and a guest on the night, Monash University’s Professor Edward Buckingham, Professor of Management and Director, Engagement at Monash Business School.

Diana was grateful for the knowledge and expertise shared with her: “This will have an impact on more than 30,000 people who live in the remote communities that Care for Africa operates in.”

Describing the Chairman’s Cocktail Party as “an exciting evening of conversations with great minds”, Diana said that Dr Loughnan was inspiring and stimulating to listen to and that they connected through their “deep desire” to help those in need.

“His passion and compassion for helping children in need that live with disability was incredibly heartwarming and invigorating.

Dr Loughnan has an abundance of experience and expertise in the world of philanthropy and fundraising,” Diana said.

“We have since had further contact and I am absolutely delighted that Dr Loughnan has offered his time to visit my Board of Directors in 2018 to share his knowledge and expertise in the field of fundraising in the notfor-profit sector.”

Diana was enlightened by her discussion with Professor Buckingham, particularly about philanthropic ideals and the existence of oligarchic structures in the business and not-forprofit worlds.

“My organisation has grown from a grass roots structure, and to hear the extent of Professor Buckingham’s knowledge in the field in which I work made me want to extend our conversation so that I could absorb his knowledge and expertise.

“I expressed my desire to the Professor to have an opportunity to hear him deliver one of his lectures on a field that has so much relevance to the work that I am leading in remote impoverished communities in Tanzania. Professor Buckingham’s

expertise could be incredibly beneficial to guiding Care for Africa in the right direction. I believe it could strengthen the Care for Africa business model into a much more robust, sustainable structure that cohabitates with an oligarchic governmental system.”

In addition to being CEO of her charity, Diana is After-Hours Nurse Manager at the Launceston General Hospital. While working as an emergency nurse, a chance conversation with a colleague about extreme poverty in Africa inspired her to co-found Care for Africa in 2006 with her colleague, the late Dr Peter Hewitt. The Foundation aimed to address poverty, lack of water, medical and educational services in Tanzania’s Tarime district in eastern Africa.

The Foundation’s 2017 annual report listed another successful financial year with income of $194,000 (up from $158,000 in 2016) and expenditure of $172,000 (up from $91,800 in 2016). Projects in

Victoria's African Leadership Development Program The Graduate Union’s CEO/ Head of College Dr Kerry Bennett and Councillor Molina Asthana are both mentors for Leadership Victoria's African Leadership Development Program.

Dr Bennett and Cr Asthana recently attended the final session of this program, where 'clans' gave presentations about the group work they had undertaken over several months on loss of cultural identity and disempowerment, poor health and wellbeing, lack of communications (business), lack of

education, and youth disengagement.

From this work, several projects will continue, particularly the formation of a #OneTribe site and the distribution of a play about youth identity with the hope that it goes viral (watch the video here: http://bit.ly/2iNcomH).

Friends of Rotary that is, GHFoR Launched in 2017, the Graduate House Friends of Rotary (GHFoR) is a gateway to the world for our Resident Members. Resident Members Ligia Veliz, Parisa Shiran and Ximena Tolosa-Alvarez volunteered for the Fundraising BBQs organised by the Rotary Club of Carlton. Here is Parisa’s story.

My Journey with Rotary Attending Carlton Rotary fundraising BBQs has been an incomparably superb experience in many different ways. Although each person goes for a short period of two hours to sizzle some sausages and hand them out to people, at the end of the day we raised a substantial amount of funds, which will make a difference in the lives of communities and people around Carlton. It is such a wonderful feeling to be a part of this. The BBQs are also very good opportunities to practice teamwork, and organisational and communication skills, in addition to being energized by the comradeship that runs the whole project.

We talk about the news of the day in Australia and around the world, each person sharing their perspective on these matters. But there is always laughter and amusement as the conversations never fail to include plenty of humor. For me, helping out at the BBQs is an exhilarating experience, which helps me to do my own work better.

I have also been attending some of the Rotary Club of Carlton’s events at Graduate House. I was honoured to be invited by Carlton Rotary Club’s President, Mr Norman Tickner to the Rotary Christmas BBQ and Mr John Elligate invited me to Rotary Carlton’s Christmas Lunch. Attending these celebrations and meetings have helped me learn more about some of

the customs and traditions of Rotary, seeing, first hand, the amazing love and positive energy at the heart of the Club, and learn some Australian folk music and songs!

I feel thankful to all the members of Carlton Rotary and their families who have created the very enjoyable time I have had in my Journey with Rotary so far. It is difficult to name all of the individuals here, or to go through details of all those delightful and informative experiences — one of my favorites is of Ian Ada explaining Australian idioms and expressions, and their historical origins. So, I would like to say thank you to all Carlton Rotarians who have very warmly welcomed me into the Club and those who have also welcomed and invited me to their homes and shown me around Melbourne.

Anne and Ian Ada took me on their journey to Healesville Sanctuary as part of the ‘Welcome to Melbourne’ program. It was my first time travelling outside Melbourne and it was incredibly refreshing to see some of the natural scenery and native animals of Australia and get a sense of the bigger, much greener Melbourne I am living in. I was also very kindly invited for Christmas Lunch at Ross and Jane’s home. I had

a relaxing evening off books, laptop and writing - it was very energizing when I got back to my studies the next day! - and learnt how Australian families celebrate Christmas. Thanks everyone for the unique, fun and instructive time I have had.

As a literary person, I cannot help but finish with a quote from one of my favorite writers Mary Ann Evans (1819-1880), well-known by her pen name of George Elliot: “What do we live for, if it is not to make life less difficult for each other?”

This has appeared to me to be the vision of Rotary and so it is with great enthusiasm, knowing that my volunteer work might make life less difficult for someone, that I joined the Rotary Club of Carlton to do some good in the world.

I believe very strongly that more young people should be encouraged to be part of Rotary in order to both learn from the insights and enriching experiences of Rotarians and to contribute to the many valuable Rotary community services. vvv

Your mood depends on the food you eat. What should you be eating as you get older?

Young adults and older adults require different foods to improve their mental health, according to research from Binghamton University, The State University of New York.

Your mood depends on the food you eat, and what you should eat changes as you get older.

Lina Begdache, Assistant Professor of Health and Wellness Studies at Binghamton University, conducted an anonymous Internet survey, asking people around the world to complete the Food-Mood Questionnaire, which includes questions on foods associated with neurochemistry and neurobiology.

Analyzing the data, Begdache and Assistant Professor of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering, Nasim Sabounchi, found that mood in young adults (aged 18-29) seemed to be dependent on food that increases availability of neurotransmitter precursors and concentrations in the brain (meat).

However, mood in older adults (aged over 30) may be more reliant on food that increases availability of antioxidants (fruits) and abstinence of food that inappropriately activates the sympathetic nervous system (coffee, high glycemic index and skipping breakfast).

Young adults who ate meat (red or white) less than three times a week and exercised less than three times a week showed significant mental distress.

“Conversely, mature adult mood seems to be more sensitive to regular consumption of sources of antioxidants and abstinence of food that inappropriately activates the innate fight-or-flight response (commonly known as the stress response),” Begdache added. “With aging, there is an increase in free radical formation (oxidants), so our need for antioxidants increases.”

Free radicals cause disturbances in the brain, which increases the risk for mental distress. “Also, our ability to regulate stress decreases, so if we consume food that activates the stress response (such as coffee and too much carbohydrates), we are more likely to experience mental distress.”

Begdache said: “Another noteworthy finding is that young adult mood appears to be sensitive to build-up of brain chemicals. Regular consumption of meat leads to buildup of two brain chemicals (serotonin and dopamine) known to promote mood. Regular exercise leads to buildup of these and other neurotransmitters as well.”

The 250th anniversary of the Encyclopedia Britannica The Google search engine has revolutionised how we research information, but one thing has remained constant over the past 250 years: Encyclopedia Britannica.

Generation Y and the Millennials may never have heard of the Encyclopedia Britannica, but the reference tool that was first published in Scotland in 1768 and took pride of place on the bookshelf celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2018.
