Great Ocean Road Trip On the 23rd February, resident members Filipp Esselborn, Mattias Björnmalm, Maria Tanzer, Ilya Lazarev, Michelle Cittadini, Stine Hasselholt, Heidi Schultz, Juan Carlos Ceron, Anika Reuter, Giovanni Tarantino, Magdalena Donoso Blade and Elizabeth Garcia Martinez enjoyed a trip along our spectacular Great Ocean Road. Accompanied by drivers Bob Bennett, Rocky Mukkamula and our Membership Manager, Nelly Anala, the group departed Graduate House at 7.00am, and stopped for morning tea at Timboon rail trail. They then headed to London Bridge.

After a brief stop, walk around and photo-session, they made their way towards Port Campbell National Park, the location of the iconic Twelve Apostles. The group were in awe at the coastal scenery and breathtaking view, especially seeing the Great Ocean Road for the first time.

Taking a different route back to Melbourne in the afternoon, they stopped at another scenic spot for koala spotting but were not successful in waking any!

Lunch was in Apollo Bay with some resident members opting for their first ever swim at an Australian beach and a lovely soak in the sun. The last stop was Bells Beach, one of Australia’s best-known surfing beaches, to be in awe of the monster waves. Kangaroos made a timely appearance also on the drive home, prompting a “now our trip is complete” chant, and our tired but happy campers arrived back to their new Graduate House home at 9.30pm. What an amazing outing!

The Women’s Forum Female graduates come together each month to participate in discussion on topics that vary from social history to current affairs.

Salient points from the well-attended “What Is Racism?” forum on the 20th of March included: •

Racism is much more than the generally accepted definition of derogatory remarks/behaviour towards people of racial groups which differ from one’s own.

•

Racism probably has more to do with cultural differences than ethnic origins.

•

There are considerable variations of culture within racial groups; as seen, for example, when comparing the differences between Zulu and Kalahari bushmen of the African continent, the Indian castes, the British classes, supporters of different football teams and people of the same ethnic origin who adhere to very different political or religious views.

•

The above broad definition of racism usually stems from fear of beliefs and behaviours which differ from those with which we are familiar and comfortable.

Ms Maxine McKew

Tales from the Political Trenches Maxine McKew is a well known and much loved former politician and journalist.

Memorably for many, she took the seat of Bennelong in the 2007 federal elections from then Prime Minister of Australia, John Howard. She then served as Parliamentary Secretary for Early Childhood, and later, as Parliamentary Secretary for Infrastructure, Regional Development and Local Government.

Before entering politics, Maxine had a thirty year career as a broadcast and print journalist, including as host of Lateline and as an anchor of The 7.30 Report. She has been recognised with both Logie and Walkely awards for broadcast excellence, and with the Magazine Publisher’s award for Columnist of the Year.

Ms McKew now advises on education matters for Social Ventures Australia, an independent not-for-profit organisation established in 2002 to invest in social change to increase the impact and to build the sustainability of those in the social sector; and is a Vice Chancellor’s Fellow at The University of Melbourne with the Australia India Institute, Chair of Playgroup Australia and a member of the board of Per Capita.

Her talk is on her book Tales from the Political Trenches which is described as an intimate account of one of the most tumultuous periods in Australian politics, as well as a tale of personal change.

Influenza Vaccination Day and The Graduate Union Open Day The Graduate Union hosted the very successful launch of the be flusmart and you’re a lifesaver campaign and the opening of the national Influenza Vaccination season on Thursday, 14th March. Thanks to our collaboration with Influenza Specialist Group (ISG), more than a hundred people of all ages had the advantage of free flu shots.

The day long event received a high level of local and national media attention with many resident members being on the evening news. Those interviewed said they chose to come to Graduate House for their shots because of the convenience of our location and the ease of resting after the shot in our dining area to then have lunch or a tea or coffee break.

Others, here for the first time, were amazed by our facilities and took advantage of our Open Day tours to learn about our elegant and inviting residential college.

Professor Simon Richard Molesworth AO QC BA, LLB, LFEIANZ, FAICD, FAIM, FVPELA, PIA (HonF), CEnvP, M.ICOMOS

Professor Molesworth has kindly accepted our invitation to speak at the dinner which follows our member-only annual general meeting.

Simon has been a Queens Counsel since 1995 at the Victorian Bar, specialising in environmental, planning, heritage and natural resource law.

Renown for his outstanding contribution to the development and understanding of environmental law in Australia, he is a winner of The Australian Environmental Law Award. Currently he is Adjunct Professor at La Trobe University, with the La Trobe Institute for Social and Environmental Sustainability, which aims to encourage and support social, environmental and economic sustainability research using an interdisciplinary approach.

Professor Molesworth was Chair and then President for almost 20 years of the National Trust of Australia (Victoria). He has also been the Chair of the Australian Council of National Trusts and a Commissioner of the Commonwealth’s Australian Heritage Commission.

Simon’s talk will be on the International National Trusts Organization (INTO) of which he is the foundation Executive Chair. INTO represents National Trusts and like heritage organisations world-wide with a combined membership of more than six million people and a supporter base of many millions more. Having been Head of Delegation to the United Nation’s Climate Change Conferences (COPs15-18), he will speak primarily on INTO’s climate change work.

GU Tastings - Review Wednesday, 27th March

The inaugural GU Tastings, before and following the Twilight Lecture, was a great success thanks largely to the following generous suppliers of fine food and wine who we acknowledge with gratitude for providing wonderful tasting experiences.

Members and guests started streaming in from 5.00pm such that by 6.00pm, the Phillip Law Members’ Lounge had in excess of one hundred people. The atmosphere was vibrant, lending itself well to members mingling and enjoying the opportunity to socialise and to taste the wonderful wares.

Feedback was very positive. Many experienced not only new taste sensations, but also learnt about the production of honey from beehives on roof spaces, the blending and packaging of tea leaves, the marinating and spicing of meat and seafood, the crafting of melt-in-your mouth and visually artistic chocolates, the making of innovative and natural cheeses, and the design of new and exciting wines. Twilight Lecture Review Wednesday, 27th March

Professor Geoffrey Blainey AC

Writing the History of the World.

The Graduate Union was delighted and honoured to have Professor Geoffrey Blainey, Australia’s best known living historian, speak at the first Twilight Lecture for 2013 on how and why he has written so many outstanding books relating to the world’s history.

He explained first that the desire to write the history of the world came some years ago when he was teaching and realised that students learnt sections of history from different lecturers but were left to put the pieces together independently. So he thought it important to write all history in a way that would interest himself, whilst also addressing the aim of assisting others to gain a succinct overview.

Taking full advantage of the many invitations to give lectures on luxury cruise ships, Professor Blainey visited, learnt and researched a variety of countries for his book over a two year period. He does all his own research. The process started in the late 1990s with him putting in forty to sixty hours a week, and resulted in the publication of the global best seller A Short History of the World in the year 2000.

In planning the book, he chose to distribute attention evenly across different periods.

Controlling his penchant for interesting earlier days, he thus left sufficient space for more contemporary times. As he began to gain a picture of this rationing, he constructed a ‘map’ and then allocated a certain number of words for each period (e.g., 5,500 words for the renaissance). He commented that word count functions in word processing programs make this easy these days, and that if he exceeded his limit, he would then go back and cut out words (rueing the loss of some of his best writing!).

Making an analogy with the game of cricket, he stuck religiously to mixing in ‘fast bowling’ sections, with important facts, and ‘slow bowling’ parts where greater emphasis was placed on how people lived at that time. Professor Blainey explained that he had no set message when he started writing and thus allowed the theme to evolve as he progressed. While writing, he attempted to put himself in the position of how people lived at that time rather than viewing it from today’s hindsight. He felt that although historians can sometimes explain history as though events were almost preordained, it was important to acknowledge the power of the unexpected from history.

He spoke also to the power of technology. In his view, in the last three to four hundred years, technology had possibly done more than anything else to shape the world and the rise of prosperity in many countries. He noted additionally that we are possibly now in the most materialist time in history. Many of his audience found themselves nodding in agreement to having lived through a most remarkable period of astonishing change in the material wellbeing of a large portion of the world’s population.

papers. Professor Blainey felt that he was fortunate to have been a writer and historian in that period. He experienced, for example, the beauty and elegance of writing with a fountain pen - typing was available but undertaken by specialists and really quite expensive. Typed drafts were thus not feasible and the final version, sent in for typing from the written script, thus had to be extremely accurate. Professor Blainey viewed this training as fundamental as it forced him to know the sequence of the book, what was to be in Chapter 1, Chapter 2 and so on, in advance. By his fourth book, he took the plunge and taught himself how to type, eventually moving then to the computer and through the various information technology developments that supported text composition and research. He was not enamoured by functions such as ‘cut and paste’ but allowed himself to endure them!

He reflected on the process of re-publication and updating. Given the popularity of A Short History of the World, the need for its translation into several different languages arose. Having already been told cheekily by the publisher that the book was long to be entitled ‘Short History’, he was then faced with the need to condense it down by fiftyfive percent for the translators (using a good translator is an expensive business). The result quite obviously pointed to the retitled Very Short History of the World, and a publication that ultimately became more popular than the original.

In terms of updating, Professor Blainey reflected that many issues have changed even in the last thirteen years, but having said this, he felt it important for historians not to spend too much time in their own era. For him, the writing of the world’s history was a self-educational experience that gave him both great difficulty and great pleasure.

He thus saw it as a challenge to balance the inclusion of the most recent decade of the world’s history within the very much larger time frame of the original book’s scope. He reassured us that as long as he is alive, he will nevertheless continue to attempt to do so!

Professor Blainey spoke also to his private views on such topics as global warming, researching and feedback from his readers. He explained, for example, that he is always interested in the different ways people inform him of what they consider to be discrepancies and of his reactions, particularly after he has undertaken so many years of painstaking research - sometimes just for a paragraph or two. To him, his books on history have taken off in a most surprising way and he has been astounded to hear in retrospect, for example, that A Short History of the World was on the top best selling list in Brazil for a hundred and forty weeks in a row!

Before concluding, Professor Blainey answered some questions, examples being: His reason for not employing researchers. Professor Blainey felt that a historian needs to know the subject extremely well to employ research assistants and to make sensible use of their time.

His view was that the person writing the book has the ‘eye’ for the detail, and that though research assistants were widely used, really good researchers should be working for themselves.

His thoughts on the changing attitudes in religion. Pointing to his book A Short History of Christianity published in 2012, he noted that the major religions are powerful, and those that are the most powerful seem to reinvent themselves. Dr Gerard Vaughan The Future of the Art Museum Gerard Vaughan spoke to the major issues confronting art museums in Australia and overseas. It is often said that art museums today, especially those that are new or totally renovated, have assumed the prominence of the major Middle Ages cathedrals.

Cities are increasingly judged by their cultural offerings and museums of visual culture have assumed pre-eminence in the process of this assessment. Art museums and the blockbuster exhibitions they host have become the focus of a new kind of pilgrimage and of lucrative cultural tourism. For Richard Florida, an American urban studies theorist, creative cities with a rich internal culture that has been supported by serious investment, attract the brightest and most interesting people, and thus citizens who are most likely to create significant new wealth.

Why have art museums become so popular? Gerard suggests that it may have begun in Paris in the 1960s and 1970s, first with the opening of the Pompidou Centre, with its active cultural focus for modernity, quickly followed by the Grand Louvre project, which absorbed more money than had ever been spent in any city in the world.

I. M. Pei’s glass pyramid became the symbol of the renewal of one of the world’s finest and oldest national collections. Since then, there has been a global explosion of new building projects, from Tate Modern in London, to MOMA in New York, the Bilbao Guggenheim, the huge art museum projects in Beijing, Shanghai and Singapore, and literally hundreds more in between.

Before the renovation, the Louvre attracted around two million visitors per annum.

Last year it maintained it’s status as the world’s most visited museum, with more than eight million visitors. What does this really mean in terms of both the museological experience, and its status as France’s cultural flagship? Gerard argued that the Louvre’s current position is perilously close to a touristic saturation tipping point which risks negating the whole point of investing in a national museum. A visit to the Louvre, at any time on any day, has become a profoundly uncomfortable experience with swarms of tourists flowing through it’s overheated and unventilated galleries in search of well known art, particularly the Mona Lisa. France is quite understandably now asking how and when its publicly funded museums can be reclaimed for its own citizens.

Gerard argued that this situation is unlikely ever to happen in Australia, given our relatively low population spread over a large area and the relatively low numbers of incoming overseas tourists. Nevertheless, he warned against government and bureaucratic pressures for major blockbuster exhibitions to attract more and more visitors each year in order to meet the ‘Key Performance Indicators’ demanded.

In his view, a serious art museum should not be forced to present only those exhibitions guaranteed to be hugely popular, In the end, a sensible balance has to be found, between presenting popular and ‘safe’ historic and contemporary art and presenting the unfamiliar and the provocative, the latter of which are fast now being viewed unfortunately as ‘unacceptable risks’ to government and to boards of trustees. www.graduatehouse.com.au | ABN: 55610 664 963 | Incorporated Association Registration No. A0023234B

The members only dinner and drinks on the last Tuesday of each month from 6.45pm onwards is to Meet and Greet member scholars from all over the world who come to reside in our graduate-only college.

Though focus is largely now on studies, our global community of resident members hold great potential in the future to build on the current United Nation Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) and to inform the selection of post-2015 successors to the MDGs.

Councillor Keith Ryall pointed resident members to the new Rotary E-Club and the innovative District 9800 Project Bank, a searchable list of those projects in Melbourne which need volunteers.

McCaughey Oration: Evidence-based Action on Social Determinants of Health – Where should society invest?

Dear Darwin We all know Charles Darwin for his revolutionary work as the founder of evolution, but few of us stop to consider the man behind the theory. Recently, the Cambridge University’s Darwin Correspondence Project has published a series of letters revealing some of Darwin’s innermost thoughts during the period from 1835 to 1881.

Of particular interest, are the letters detailing the emotions he experienced as he was releasing his controversial ideas on evolution for the first time. In one, Darwin states that the process was like “confessing to a murder” reflecting his realisation that his ideas were the antithesis to widely and very strongly held Christian religious views at that time on creationism.

In other letters, a human with deep feelings much like any other, is revealed; and this is particularly evident in Darwin’s letters to his dearest friend, Joseph Hooker, in which he expresses his deep grief over the death of his step-daughter.

In collaboration with the Cambridge Digital Library, photographs of his letters, over 10,000, are being progressively uploaded for world viewing. They are available for reading at the Darwin Correspondence Project’s website: www.darwinproject.ac.uk

UNIVERSITY SECTOR news Universities Australia speaks to the cuts in university funding Saturday the 13th April, 2013 saw an announcement by the federal government of reductions in university funding and student support to the tune of more than two billion dollars and the beginning of a series of protests across the country.

Glyn Davis, Vice Chancellor of The University of Melbourne and Chair of Universities Australia called on all vicechancellors to do their jobs by voicing loudly their opposition to the funding changes for students and universities. He points out that these cuts are incongruous with the federal government’s encouragement to expand the university sector and with the system thus created: demand-driven, inclusive and egalitarian with much greater participation by young people from all walks of life in universities.

As indicated by Professor Davis in an article in the Financial Review, the 2013 National Workforce Development Strategy predicts that the economy will need three to four per cent more graduates every year to 2025. Universities Australia is thus calling on the government to establish urgently a Productivity Commission and to acknowledge that Australia’s university sector is crucial to national productivity growth, industrial diversification and long-term economic transformation.

The Graduate Union extends its warmest congratulations to author Carrie Tiffany for receiving the inaugural Stella Prize and $50,000 on the 16th April, 2013 for her book Mateship with Birds, and applauds her generosity in donating back $10K to be split equally among the other five authors who were short listed: Courtney Colloins, Michelle de Kretser, Lisa Jacobson, Cate Kennedy and Margo Lanagan.

We also wish Carrie all the very best for a number of other awards, noting that Mateship with Birds is now also on the long list for the Kibble Literary Award, Britain’s The Women’s Prize for Fiction and the Miles Franklin Award.

Joan Child Joan Child, Australian politician and the first female Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives, passed away on the 23rd February, 2013, at age 91 years. Her contributions to Australian politics and her keen sense of political democracy have been instrumental and reformative. Born and raised in Victoria, Joan married Hal Child, who suddenly passed away in the 1960s, leaving her a widow with five children. Starting her career in politics as a liaison officer for Jim Cairns, she was later elected to the House for the seat of Henty in Melbourne. Joan rose to the position of Speaker on the 11th February, 1986 as the unanimously supported nominee of the Australian Labour Party. Joan retired in 1990 when the seat of Henty was abolished. From her retirement until her death she remained active in Labor Party affairs and was an inspiration to

many Labor, and Liberal, followers.

James Alexander Strong AO FAICD The Graduate Union extends condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of James Strong, who passed away on the 3rd March, 2013, aged 68. James is remembered by his family as a beautiful man and by the business community as a person with shining intelligence and for his bow ties!

The list of James’ many executive and governance roles is long: Executive Director of the Australian Mining Council, CEO of Australian Airlines (1986-1989), national Chair of partners for law firm Corrs Chambers Westgarth, flew over Sydney at Managing Director of DB Breweries Group, Chief Executive A Qantas A380 Airbus 1.00pm on the 11th March as a sign of respect and Managing Director, and then a director, of Qantas, for the ex-CEO (1993-2001) and Board Chair of the Australia Council for the Arts, the Sydney member of Qantas (2006-2013).

Theatre Company, the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, the Australia Business Arts Foundation, the State Library of Victoria, V8 Supercars and of the Australian and New Zealand organising committee for the 2015 Cricket World Cup, and a director of Opera Australia and Dorna Sports. As Chair of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (at the time of his death) he contributed significantly to governance reform in Australia, particularly with regards to gender diversity on company boards and professional development for directors. He received a Centenary Medal in 2001 and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2006 for services to business and commerce.

Peter Harvey Peter Harvey, television journalist and public icon, passed away on the 2nd March, 2013 at age 68 years after 37 years in TV journalism, and ten years before that in print (The Daily Telegraph, Newsweek, The Guardian). One of Australia’s most recognised journalists, Peter came quickly to fame with one of his first major stories, the dismissal of Prime Minister Gough Whitlam in 1975, and his subsequent reporting for the Nine News and 60 Minutes programs from all over the world.

A Walkley award winner (1964), he also received a Centenary Medal in 2001 for his contributions to journalism. One of Peter’s most loved characteristics was his television sign off, which was simply “Peter Harvey … Canberra” (or wherever he was reporting from) in a deep baritone voice.

Gerda Lerner Gerda Lerner, pioneer of women’s rights and Professor Emeritus in History, passed away on the 2nd January, 2013 at age 92 years. Gerda was born in Vienna, Austria and immigrated to the United States (US) in 1939. Working in a myriad of jobs and publishing several stories while supporting grassroot activism, she returned to her education in the late 1950s and thence became one of the most influential writers on history and sociology, giving one of the first feminist insights into history and developing the first American doctoral studies program in Women’s history.

Bryce Rankine Bryce Rankine, esteemed wine scientist, passed away on the 26th February, 2013, at age 88 years.

Well known by our members, The Graduate Union extends our sincerest condolences to his friends and family. Bryce’s work on wine development and viticulture is significant and of international acclaim. He held many senior positions in the wine industry, and was long-time head of oenology at South Australia’s world renown Roseworthy College. His book, Making Good Wine, published in 2004, has been incredibly popular and is described as the definitive work on winemaking in Australia and New Zealand.

Donald Arthur Glaser Donald Arthur Glaser, neurobiologist and Nobel Prize winner, passed away on the 28th February, 2013, aged 86 years. Donald was a successful academic who also excelled in the arts, playing viola for the Cleveland Philharmonic while studying at Case Western Reserve University. Donald completed his PhD in 1950 at Caltech University and was promoted to Professor at the University of Michigan in 1957. In 1960 he invented the bubble chamber used in sub-atomic particle physics and this, with other contributions to the field, earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1960.

Dame Hilda Louisa Bynoe, DBE Dame Bynoe was the first woman Governor of a Commonwealth of Nations country, becoming Governor of Grenada, Cariacou and Petit Martinique. Born in the West Indies, she left for Europe in 1944 and graduated in medicine from the University of London’s Royal Free Hospital, and then from the London School of Medicine for Women in 1951. Returning to the West Indies in 1953, Bynoe served in Guyana and Trinidad and was appointed the First Woman Governor in the British Commonwealth and First Native Governor of her island home. Made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 1969, she retired in 1990 but was patroness of a number of organisations including the Caribbean College of Family Physicians and the Caribbean Women’s Association. She died aged 91 years on the 6th April, 2013.

The staff were helpful and keen to assist as well as providing great suggestions based on experience in venue and meeting management. The function room absolutely suited our needs. Morning and afternoon teas were delicious. Mini muffins and scones were great, and the working lunches were also good in terms of quality and quantity. The staff were helpful in both the lead up and during the event and there cannot, in any way, be any criticism.

We are indebted to the Lovely Ladies for providing the following text and wish to state, after much comprehensive and extremely scientific research, that there is no supporting evidence for ancientness!

A senior sorority, a group of ancient but ebullient women, friends from school days in East Melbourne and ironically known as The Lovely Ladies, has found a haven for their reunions at Graduate House. The welcoming ambience, delightful staff and relaxed atmosphere give our gatherings a special warmth and enjoyment that we have never felt so keenly before in thirty or more years of our keeping in touch. Over the last three or four years, during which we have assembled at Graduate House every month, a sense of ease and belonging has consolidated our identity as a group. The spacious, comfortable surroundings, gracious hospitality, as well as an imaginative and varied menu have made our lunches memorable, precious and unmissable. We thank Graduate House for regenerating our sense of an alma mater. .... and we thank the Lovely Ladies for simply being LOVELY. Reciprocal Association News Harvard Club of Boston, USA Conveniently located at two sites (374 Commonwealth Avenue and 1 Federal Street), The Harvard Club of Boston is the only Platinum alumni club in Massachusetts. What’s happening in Council?

A frequent theme of this note from me in each of our monthly newsletters has been the work Council has been devoting to the preparation of a new constitution. That work has almost finished and I am hopeful that at its meeting of the 23rd April, Council will agree to the draft document being sent to the lawyers for final checking. (*This item is written a week or two ahead to allow for assembly and printing of the newsletter, so the 23rd April will have passed by the time you read this).

When Council has reviewed the lawyer’s observations and recommendations, we will plan and implement information meetings for members and later in the year call a meeting of the members to consider the new constitution and to invite you to vote for its adoption.

I wish to acknowledge and thank, Councillors Cheryl Kidston, Meredith Doig and Leo Santalucia who have carried the majority of the workload involved in drafting the constitution and the new regulations.

The new regulations include a re-definition of the roles and responsibilities of each of the sub-committees of the Council. This has been done to ensure that each of these committees places greater focus on issues related to our future and good practice.

Late March, we had over 100 people attend our first 2013 Twilight Lecture to hear Professor Geoffrey Blainey AC speak about his experiences in writing the history of our world. It is very pleasing for the Council to see such support for this evening and for the recent Wednesday luncheons. The Membership committee is undertaking much soul-searching to look for ways to increase both our membership and the attendance of members and guests at such activities. To this end you will soon receive an extensive survey (see below for more details) to ask for your thoughts on many issues regarding Graduate House and membership. I encourage you to complete the survey and return it, as your effort in supporting the Council in its ambition to secure our future by growing our membership numbers and an active membership base.

The planning for the Annual General Meeting is almost complete and we are glad to confirm Professor Simon Richard Molesworth AO as the guest speaker for the dinner that follows the AGM. The evening will be another enjoyable time for those in attendance. Please book in if you plan to attend the dinner.
