The Women’s Forum Salient points from the well-attended “The nature and extent of bullying in our community” forum on the 17th of April included: •

Bullying is a fact of life. It is present in many and varied forms and places. It can occur in personal, public, commercial, national and international spheres. It may be defined as an imbalance of power in any situation where one entity has control which is detrimental to others.

•

Is bullying an innate and/or necessary part of life?

In the animal kingdom it is the way in which the best genes are passed on to succeeding generations.

In marriage (where it is often clandestine) it is frequently tolerated by the victim as an acceptable part of the contract.

•

Is bullying necessarily harmful? It can lead to positive outcomes when the victim gains strength and a form of power by learning ways of dealing with the bullying and thence using this power/ control in its many forms to bring about the changes desired for a perpetrator who goes unchallenged.

•

A quote from Holland: “When nobody becomes somebody, nobody does not know him or herself any more”.

•

People subjected to bullying may develop a stultifying and destructive “victim mentality”.

•

In order to become a civilised society we need rules (laws) to set and maintain orderly and acceptable behaviour. It is these laws and the way in which they are executed which define the degree to which we are “civilised”.

Professor Simon Richard Molesworth AO QC BA, LLB, LFEIANZ, FAICD, FAIM, FVPELA, PIA (HonF), CEnvP, MICOMOS

Professor Molesworth has kindly accepted our invitation to speak at the dinner which follows our member-only annual general meeting.

Simon has been a Queens Counsel since 1995 at the Victorian Bar, specialising in environmental, planning, heritage and natural resource law. Renown for his outstanding contribution to the development and understanding of environmental law in Australia, he is a winner of The Australian Environmental Law Award.

Currently he is Adjunct Professor at La Trobe University, with the La Trobe Institute for Social and Environmental Sustainability, which aims to encourage and support social, environmental and economic sustainability research using an interdisciplinary approach.

Professor Molesworth was Chair and then President for almost 20 years of the National Trust of Australia (Victoria). He has also been the Chair of the Australian Council of National Trusts and a Commissioner of the Commonwealth’s Australian Heritage Commission.

Simon’s talk will be on the International National Trusts Organization (INTO) of which he is the foundation Executive Chair. INTO represents National Trusts and like heritage organisations world-wide with a combined membership of more than six million people and a supporter base of many millions more. Having been Head of Delegation to the United Nation’s Climate Change Conferences (COPs15-18), he will speak primarily on INTO’s climate change work.

Finance Seminar Review Tax Effective Death, 18th April, 2013

In this session we focused on how capital gains are taxed upon death in the hands of the executor or subsequently in the hands of the beneficiaries. Whilst we do not have death duties in Australia, it is sometimes said that there are ‘hidden death duties’ within the capital gains tax legislation.

We also looked at special circumstances surrounding charities, and beneficiaries who do not reside in Australia, noting the complex rules in relation to the main residence of the deceased. One strategy discussed was how to deal with capital gains during a lifetime rather than leaving a large tax debt to the beneficiaries. We also discussed the option of making tax deductible gifts prior to death.

Superannuation entitlements can be subject to tax in the hands of dependants and we stressed the importance of understanding your superannuation statement to determine the tax free and taxable components of the balance. Taxable components can result in tax in the hands of certain dependants. We discussed strategies to “re weight” the taxable to tax free components, including cash-out, re contribution and dual pension options.

We emphasised that when drawing a will it is necessary to be aware of the tax consequences associated with estate assets. Choose a solicitor who has an understanding of the various taxes at play or have your tax adviser’s involvement in your estate plan.

Top marks for the idea and A+ to the presenters for the recent financial seminars. James and I wondered if it would be relevant for us as we have recently remade our wills with sound legal and financial advice. We attended the sessions however as a checking exercise - well worth the time. Both presenters offered thoughtprovoking, interesting information in understandable “laymans’ language” and demonstrated great skill in honing in on the questions most of us don’t know we need to ask, thereby opening up worthwhile input from the audience. Our sincere appreciation to them both for so freely sharing their time and expertise and to Graduate House for hosting an innovative and valuable service to members. Ms Margaret Simons

Margaret Simons is an award-winning freelance journalist and author.

She is also the Director of the Centre for Advanced Journalism and coordinator of the new Masters in Journalism at The University of Melbourne. She writes on media for Crikey, and has published ten books.

Her most recent work includes Journalism at the Crossroads, published

by Scribe in 2012, and the book Malcolm Fraser: The Political Memoirs co-written with former Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser and published by The Miegunyah Press in 2010. The latter book won both the Book of the Year and the Douglas Stewart Prize for Non-Fiction at the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards in 2011.

Simons is presently working on a biography of the media proprietor, Kerry Stokes.

16th June Sunday Music about Wilma Concertmaster of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra since 2003, Wilma Smith combines her love of the symphonic repertoire with a busy chamber music life.

After leaving Fiji as a small child, Wilma began piano and violin lessons in her new home, Auckland, New Zealand, culminating in study at Auckland University and early professional experience with the Auckland Symphonia (now Philharmonia) and New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

She then continued her studies in Boston at the New England Conservatory with the legendary Dorothy DeLay and Louis Krasner, playing in masterclasses for many others including Joseph Gingold, Yehudi Menuhin and Sandor Vegh.

She was founding first violinist of the Lydian String Quartet, prizewinners at Evian, Banff and Portsmouth International Competitions and winners of the Naumburg Award for Chamber Music. She also worked with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and led the Harvard Chamber Orchestra, the Handel and Haydn Society and Banchetto Musicale, a period instrument baroque orchestra.

An invitation to form the New Zealand String Quartet took her back to Wellington in 1987 and she was first violinist of the quartet until her appointment as Concertmaster of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in 1993. During her years with the quartet they toured New Zealand and Australia extensively and performed at the Tanglewood Festival. Prior to her departure for Melbourne, the NZSO honoured her with the title of Concertmaster Emeritus.

Wilma has enjoyed duo partnerships with pianists, Michael Houstoun and Ian Munro and since moving to Melbourne, has performed with the Munro/Smith/Berlin Trio, Ensemble Liaison, the MSO Chamber Players and Hopkins Quartet. Her chamber music collaboration with Steven Isserlis for the 2008 International Festival of the Arts in Wellington led to her ongoing participation in his Open Chamber Music Seminar at Prussia Cove in Cornwall, England.

about Ian Ian Munro has emerged over recent years as one of Australia’s most distinguished and awarded musicians, with a career that has taken him to thirty countries in Europe, Asia, North America and Australasia. His award in 2003 of Premier Grand Prix at the Queen Elisabeth International Competition for composers (Belgium) is a unique achievement for an Australian and follows on from multiple prizes in international piano competitions in Spain (Maria Canals), Italy (Busoni), Portugal (Vianna da Motta) and the UK, where his second prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition in 1987 established his international profile.

After completing his early training in Melbourne under the guidance of Roy Shepherd, a pupil of Alfred Cortot, and furthering his studies in Vienna, London and Italy with Noretta Conci, Guido Agosti and Michele Campanella, his international career began in the UK, where he has performed with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia, English Chamber Orchestra, London Mozart Players, BBC Concert Orchestra and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and broadcast widely for the BBC. Elsewhere, he has performed with orchestras in Poland, Italy, Portugal, Russia, the USA, China, New Zealand and all the major orchestras in Australia. Ian joined the acclaimed Australia Ensemble in Sydney in 2000.

Ian has recorded CDs for ABC Classics, Hyperion, Cala, Naxos, Marco Polo, Tall Poppies and the UK label Warehouse. Recent discs include the collected music by Tasmanian composer Katharine Parker and the piano concerto by Elena Kats-Chernin, commissioned for Ian Munro by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. During the last few concert seasons Ian has performed concerti by Ravel, Munro, Mozart, Kats-Chernin, Gershwin and Edwards, toured to the UK, Russia, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, Uzbekistan and throughout Australia and New Zealand in recitals, chamber music and concerto performances. Increasingly in demand as a composer, he was Featured Composer for Musica Viva in 2011.

about Saul Saul Lewis has been a member of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Horn section since 2009 and holds the position of Principal Third Horn. After completing his A.S.C.M. (Associate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music), Saul was awarded a Big Brother Scholarship and studied with many of the pre-eminent horn players in London and Germany. He later completed his Masters Degree in Performance in Sydney under Tony Buddle and became Principal Third Horn with the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra in 1994.

He has played with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony and Australian Chamber Orchestra, as well as being active in the commercial scene on film scores.

Saul was a founding member of the Sydney wind quintet Enigma Five and was reviewed for his “fine horn playing” in a concerto performance with Cove Chamber Ensemble in 1991.

He won the position of Principal Third Horn with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in 2010 and is also teaching at Monash University and The University of Melbourne. We are pleased to welcome Australian Tapestry Workshop to our day for the classics.

Established in 1976, Australian Tapestry Workshop weavers are artists from all over the world who use European techniques from the 15th century to produce hand-crafted vibrant, intricate and inventive interpretative tapestries of artists such as Arthur Boyd, Jon Cattapan, John Olsen, Jorn Utzon, David Noonan and Sally Smart.

The Workshop’s tapestries range in size from very small to monumental, and are hung in significant public and private collections around the world. They are woven using Australian wool which is dyed on-site forming a unique palette of more than 370 colours.

From midday to concert time (at 2.30pm) learn about this unique organisation, about the weavers and their interpretative pieces, and how to commission a work, or how to become a volunteer or a Friend of the Australian Tapestry Workshop.

Anne Frankenberg

Australia and its community radio stations Anne Frankenberg is General Manager at 3MBS, Melbourne’s fine music community radio station. Trained initially as a clarinettist, Anne has degrees in Music and Psychology, an Executive MBA, and has had a management career with the Victoria State Opera and Opera Australia. From 2006–2008 she was the inaugural General Manager of Victorian Opera, the Victorian professional opera company.

From 2009-2012 Anne was Director of Communications and Fundraising and Deputy Executive Director at International Women’s Development Agency (IWDA), which works with local organisations in the Asia-Pacific region to empower women and transform their lives and communities. Anne has served on the Board of the Australian Youth Orchestra and is currently a board member of the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra.

Maxine Mckew Tales from the Political Trenches For our May monthly luncheon we welcomed Maxine KcKew, Vice Chancellor’s Fellow, The University of Melbourne and famous journalist and ex-politician.

Maxine spoke of the challenges facing Australian school students against the backdrop of declining academic Maxine addressing the audience at the luncheon performance as measured by recognised international benchmarks.

In particular, she drew attention to the 2012 PIRLS (Progress in International Reading Literacy Study) data which ranks the reading proficiency of Australian primary children as being well below their counterparts in other comparable countries. Ms McKew argued that if this situation is not reversed, then an entire cohort of Australian children will struggle with the complexity of high school work and will fail to develop their critical thinking skills.

Educational experts are sounding the alarm and suggesting that what’s required is richer reading content and teachers who know how to stretch and challenge their students. In this respect, the graduate teachers from the Melbourne Graduate School of Education are pointing the way, trained as they are to clinically analyse individual needs and to devise strategies to promote broader learning.

Ms McKew stressed the importance of principals and lead teachers who pursue an evidence-based approach, particularly in the years ahead with the promise of dramatically increased funding per student head as a result of the Gonski reforms.

Talking about the Melbourne Graduate School of Education (MGSE) did you hear that: • it was recently ranked number THREE in the world for the discipline of education, with only Harvard and Cambridge ranked higher?

• it was successful in gaining $16M of Commonwealth funding to establish the new Science of Learning Research Centre together with the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), University of Queensland and a consortium of scieintists from all over Australia.

• it has a new Master of Applied Positive Psychology course.

• it has partnered with the University of the Philippines’ (UP) College of Education to estbalish the Assessment Curriculum and Technology Research Centre (ACTRC) to improve education from kindergarten to Year 12 in the Phillipines.

MTC is part of what makes this city the culture, arts and entertainment capital of the world. Established in 1953, Australia’s oldest theatre company has enriched the lives of its patrons through its contemporary and classical takes on the performing arts. In addition to twelve productions each year, the MTC provides undergraduate and postgraduate education for actors and the theatre.

April 21st Sunday Music Review The April Sunday Music was truly an event for the family across all its generations. The day began at 11.00am. The Graduate Union was host to curator Katie Paine and her art show Hyper Saturation, an exhibition of the works of many talented young and up-and-coming artists from around Melbourne. The upper-end of The Graduate Union Dining Room was prepared as a sitting area for a delectable morning tea which consisted of a bacon and tomato egg frittata, smoked salmon bagels, freshly cut seasonal fruit, scrumptious home-made savoury scones, assorted apricot, chocolate and cream pastries and a delicious serving of pancakes.

Display and activity booths were set up in the dining area, each offering a lovely selection of products and advice. For the adults, Caroline Cotton the Lighthouse Hunter - shared her passion for Victorian lighthouses in her stunning calendar of lights, colours and weather showing off some of Australia’s most iconic lighthouses and sceneries; Kara Landau - the Travelling dietitian - presented her new book which details how to get past those emotionally devastating periods through the wonder of good food; Punam Kumwar sold her creative Nepalese handbags for charity (specifically street kids); and Shirley Ho instructed us all in the fine crafts of crochet and knitting.

For those who were adventurous, Nelly Anala painted Henna on hands and arms using a traditional indian skin art practice. For the children, the Bistro area offered a variety of children’s book writers and artists including Claire Saxby, Embiggen Books and Rene Treml each of them offering to read and play with the children, offering them craft activities. Scott Nelson happened to be a favourite, with his face painting skills bringing cheeky smiles to many a young pirate or puppy.

In the Stillwell Room Ann Dixon gave a special presentation of her knowledge in dating garbs and photos - an excellent way for families to learn about their ancestry. The Ian Potter Room, in a stark contrast to the classical gowns and photos in the Stillwell room, housed the video games area for the children. Apologies to any families who have since had their sons or daughters asking for a PlayStation or Xbox - the children seemed to enjoy this room just a tad.

Of course, we cannot comment on The Sunday Music Day without mentioning the fantastic music performed by Coco’s Lunch, the five piece female a Capella and percussion group. Let’s set the scene. The Stella Langford Rooms are lit in a dark but bright blue; the children are seated on the floor in front of the adults as ocean noises played quietly in the background. The doors open and the ladies of Coco’s Lunch swim their way to the front to begin their titular track I Wanna be a Mermaid. The light hearted songs and the ocean theme then have children and adults dancing like crabs, dolphins and even seaweed swaying in the current. At times, Coco’s Lunch would bring out a smooth bongo drum or a tambourine, much to the children’s delight.

The concert ended all too soon after it started but immediately the Coco’s Lunch performers kindly offered their percussion instruments for the children to play. Once everything had calmed, the crowd retreated back to the Dining Room where they were greeted with a delicious array of cakes, sandwiches, tea and coffee.

It is difficult to comment on the day from a single person’s perspective. How you spent The crowd had the opportunity to check out the musical instruments with the artists your Music Sunday was likely unique to you and probably differed from another’s experience. It is, however, hard to argue that the day was not a success. Whether you were perusing the stalls, observing the artwork, talking with friends or family, listening to music or having your face painted, the day was one to be remembered. I myself spent the day with my dearest little three-year old cousin. She was a pirate for the day and we spent the majority of our time having an adventure around The Graduate Union. This place can be more adventurous than you would believe through the eyes of a child. She was having so much fun we almost missed the concert, making it just in time for the spectacular performance.

While the day for the family across its generations is a new avenue for The Graduate Union the children’s response was so positive and the day such a success, that we sincerely hope we have the opportunity to host another family day in the near future, and at the very least, annually.

Youth Vision Nepal (YVN) is a charity for street kids that makes and sells products, such as handcrafted bags (pictured), to raise funds to relieve hunger and poverty. Resident members also learnt about the opportunity to take part in Nepal based camps in early 2014 to build education and health centres for these kids. Contact Punam in the office for details.

UNIVERSITY SECTOR NEWS Money on the Mind As of the 10th of April 2013, the Australian Dollar (AUD) and the Chinese Yuan Renminbi (CNY) have begun direct trading, following establishment of an agreement between the Australian Government and the People’s Bank of China. This agreement strengthens the Australia-China relationship, and places Australia in a prime position to reduce the costs of trading with China in the future. Australia is currently only the third currency which has been allowed to enter direct trade with the CNY, though the Chinese Government are currently attempting to increase the amount of its foreign trade settled in CNY, which may lead the CNY to become the dominant currency in Asia in the future. The only other currencies that are currently allowed to trade with the CNY are the US Dollar and the Japanese Yen. As it stands, a third of Australian exports are destined for China and Australia is China’s fifth largest source of imports - with the trade between the two nations worth over AUD 125 billion a year. Prior to the agreement, Australian and Chinese business has been settled by exchange through the US Dollar as an intermediary. All things considered however, the direct currency agreement is not going to have an immediate impact. The CNY is used in only 1% of trade contracts between Australia and China. For the moment, the contract will reduce transaction costs and hedging costs that were previously a burden in the currency transfer process.

Watch the Glass The glass ceiling is a sort of worldwide metaphor, representing a barrier of professional development for women and minority groups. It has been recognised as existing in almost every country in the world and represents a certain level of misogyny in high-level corporate or academic positions. But enough about the doom and gloom. There is finally some good news. The glass ceiling in academia has begun to crack; and in Turkey, it has shattered.

Turkey currently leads the fight for gender equality, with 47.5% of its academic staff in its top five universities being female. Australia and New Zealand are not far off with up to 45%. The US remains just behind with 35.9%, and the UK is at 34.6%.

In this decade, the sharp lunge at the glass ceiling seems thus far to be going successfully.

UNIVERSITY SECTOR NEWS Feeling a Bit Robotic?

The mechanical is playing an ever more important role in our day to day lives, particularly as we seem it imperative to make our twenty-four hours as efficient as possible. Personification of mechanical devices is not new - some of you may have named a car or boat - and it is apparent that we, as humans, are constantly trying to develop more human machines. Take for example, Siri, an artificial intelligence on some iPhones. Siri remembers your name, has memorised your contacts list, is able to hold a conversation and can answer a wide variety of questions. Should you ask Siri “How’s the weather today Siri?” she will respond with the day’s forecast and may even suggest that you take an umbrella. It is not so hard to imagine how upset you may feel if Siri, or another mechanical device is damaged … or injured. A new study in Germany reveals that people feel similar amounts of empathy for robots being attacked, as they do for people. But what if we didn’t have to feel for them? What if robots could feel for themselves?

Emotions in robotics are still a world away. Science may never fully develop a robot with the capability to understand the complexities of feeling sad, or angry or even happy. Feeling on a sensory level is another cup of tea entirely. A scientist collaboration in the US and China have developed a form of sensory “skin” that will allow robots to feel their surroundings, discern wood from metal and assess whether something is too hot or too cold. The “skin” uses cutting edge technology to replicate the electrical signals we produce in our nervous system to a mechanical level. Placing this “skin” on an iPhone might thus be the perfect deterrent to ever dropping your phone again - we may well feel more emphathy for its shouts of pain!

The Perils of the Professoriate The everyday academic is faced with several concerning issues. The first and foremost is the ever growing lack of job security in a neoliberal university. In a recent article published on the Al Jazeera information website, Associate Professor Tarak Barkawi noted that in 2013 only 24% of academic employees have tenure or full-time tenure in America. This fact is not new however; the rise in adjunctification has been noted in academic communities since the early 2000s. These adjunct lecturers and tutors are not to be blamed. They simply live as part of the ever growing group of unemployed or underpaid PhDs. In fact, blame is hard to place in a situation like this.

Those in managerial positions could be considered. The neoliberal ideology that a university functions more efficiently when its profit is higher is the cause of many a tenure loss in recent years. However the development to adjunctification is impossible to bring about without a certain level of cooperation from the professoriate. How so? One of the defining features of the professoriate is its self governing and self regulating nature but as it stands the professoriate currently cedes power and even cooperates with the neoliberal managerial class. This joint effort has lead to the decrease in tenure and full-time tenure and the overwhelming rise in tuition fees and funding cuts in universities. As Barkawi says “Students are increasingly unwilling to take on massive debt for jobs they have little confidence of getting.”

This is not entirely unrelated to course populism, the concept that funding goes towards the popular courses only. Though this approach works quite well financially for the university, it fails to take properly into account the less popular, but just as important courses. For example the University of Exeter cut funding to the less popular chemistry department and the department has since shut down. The students in Exeter now lack the option to extend their knowledge in chemistry because the majority seems to not want to. This dilemma has only just begun to show itself in Australia, but hopefully we see a change in pace in coming years to prevent the loss of some of our best opportunities for tertiary education.

Something to Brighten Your Day Life Member Dr Ruth Bright has been awarded the prestigious Dublin Prize. Established as a trust fund with £260 in 1892 to celebrate the tercentenary of the founding of The University of Dublin, this prize is awarded once every five to ten years to students or graduates of The University of Melbourne for outstanding contribution to art, music, literature or science. Arriving in Australia in 1948, Dr Bright studied at the Conservatorium of Music and has contributed significantly to the field of music therapy, cofounding the Australian Music Therapy Association in 1972 and publishing thirteen books in this field. Expressing “disbelief and astonishment” at winning, she plans to use the prize money to attend Music Therapy and Gerontology conferences, and informs us that she will be visiting Melbourne in September for the Australian Music Therapy Association Conference. Thank you for your feedback We organise our function monthly at Graduate House and the process is very easy. The function rooms suited our needs. The staff are very helpful and organised and the food is excellent, in terms of quality and quantity.

The event was a family birthday for me. I wanted to give my family an easy and happy way to celebrate my birthday hosted by me on this occasion.

I was not thinking of a spectacular meal but a family meal. Rosie had just the right answers. The function room was just right. It was a lovely idea to have the dinner in the library where we could all fit comfortably and together. The food was delicious and helpings were extremely generous.

The staff were very helpful in both the lead up to the event and during the event. Even though some family members had to come from many parts of Melbourne and the country after other commitments, the requested courses were nevertheless speedily produced as delayed attendees arrived. The simple but delicious meal suited our various family members.

Nancye Smith (Life member since 1951), Muriel Johnstone (member since 2008), Joan Simpson, Dr Jean Barrie (Life member since 1962) and Betty Clamp were seen recently at the Graduate Union dining room. The Golden Girls, who have known each other for more than seventy years, meet here regularly and have been doing so for the past three decades. On the left is an article featuring their reunion gathering which was published in the November 2003 issue of The Melbourne Graduate.

Ten years later, in April 2013, they are again photographed and featured. We look forward to seeing them again at their next reunion and to the feature in 2023.

Reciprocal Association News PYC Hindu Gymkhana This prestigious club is located in the heart of downtown Pune, of the Maharashtra region in western India.

Just a few years older than The Graduate Union, PYC was founded in 1906 with a mission to promote cricket and other sports.

It is has now transformed one of the most highly regarded associations in its region.

The main lounge and dining area

The club has moved recently into a new six storey building of approximately a hundred thousand square feet. It is now more a lifestyle club with ultra modern sports facilities along with conference rooms, banquet halls, multicuisine restaurants, a cafetaria and a bar. Of its 32 accommodation rooms, all are airconditioned, 28 are executive and four are suites.

The Graduate Union is proud to hold reciprocal arrangements with PYC Hindu Gymkhana. Our members are guaranteed a warm welcome when choosing to stay in Pune.

We, in turn, extend a warm welcome to their members when they choose to reside in our Carlton facilities when visiting Melbourne.

What’s happening in Council?

Council held its last meeting for this twelve month period on 23rd April 2013. This was also the last Council meeting which I will chair as our constitution only allows a councillor to be chairman for three years. At its meeting on 12th June, 2013, the Council will elect a new Chair and Vice Chair.

Our new President, Major General Professor Jeffrey V Rosenfeld AM, is a busy man with many responsibilities, not the least of which is the need to respond to unexpected requirements for brain surgery as he is an eminent surgeon. Therefore in April it was very pleasing to welcome him to his first Council meeting and to benefit from his contribution. Along the way, Professor Rosenfeld has been contributing by his attendance at member functions and by way of emails to Dr Bennett and myself, resulting from his close attention to the minutes of our meetings.

Not long into my first year as Chair, I introduced the practice of asking the external auditor to attend the Council meeting immediately preceding the annual general meeting so that all councillors could hear his report and ask questions. Previously, this report was only available to the smaller group of councillors who were members of the Accounting and Audit Committee.

At our April meeting of Council, the auditor, Mr Tony Law, described several minor opportunities for change and recognised the significant improvement to our financial practices, which have been implemented over the last two or three years. A credit to our new CEO, her staff and the Accounting and Audit Committee.

Council considered a few minor changes to the draft constitution for it to be readied for the review by the external lawyers. This discussion was led by the Chair of our Governance and Policy Review Committee, Cheryl Kidston, who has shouldered the major workload to achieve this end result. The Council and I are sure that the members of The Graduate Union too will be grateful for this contribution and will thank Cheryl for all her work. As acknowledged last month, Cheryl had very strong input from Councillors Dr Meredith Doig and Mr Leo Santalucia.

Our constitution allows the Council to recognise members who have given long and/or outstanding service to The Graduate Union, by awarding an Honorary Life Membership. Such a person was recognised at our Council meeting and to find out who this person is, you will need to attend the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 31st May. I mentioned during the last AGM that The Graduate Union has a $7 million debt for which we currently pay a very high interest bill. This is a chain around our neck with no prospect of repaying the loan principle as we are a not-for-profit organisation which basically breaks even financially each year. To address this issue, I have created a Fundraising and Benefaction Working Party to determine how we may seek funds from members and philanthropists. We held our first meeting during April to explore a few options. Hopefully, later in the year we will be able to advise more details of this ambition.
