Happy Lunar New Year 31st January - 14th February

The Graduate Union wishes everyone a very Happy Chinese New Year - 恭喜发财 - and looks forward to the 15-day celebration beginning 31st January.

2014 is the year of the Green Wood Horse.

People born in Horse years (which occur every 12 years) are said to be cheerful, popular and fun loving, as well as highly intuitive and good decision makers. Active at work and with a good sense of humour, their positive attitude to life is thought to bring them career and relationship succees.

Though there are are many and varied predictions, we are pleased to hear from our many Chinese Members that education is seen as a ‘favourable business’ for 2014 and hope that we can weather such other predictions as fast victories and unexpected adventure!

Ms Susan Pascoe

At the helm of the charity regulator on stormy seas Susan Pascoe AM is Commissioner of the Australian Charities and Not for Profits Commission (ACNC). Prior to this, Susan was a Commissioner at the State Services Authority in Victoria (2006-2011) focusing on regulatory reform. In this role, she chaired the review of the regulation of the not-for-profit sector in 2007and 2008, co-chaired a review of the design and governance of regulatory bodies in Victoria in 2008 and 2009, and chaired a review of Victoria’s Indigenous Employment Strategy in 2008 and 2009. She also served as one of three Commissioners on the 2009 Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission.

Susan’s earlier professional background was in education where she served as President of the Australian College of Educators, Chief Executive Officer of the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority and Chief Executive of the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria. Susan chaired the Australian National Commission for UNESCO, and was a Patron for the Melbourne Parliament for the World’s Religions.

She has recently served on the Board of Cabrini Health and on the Senate of the Australian Catholic University.

Twilight Lecture

Robyn Arianrhod

Mathematical love stories: Writing popular scientific biography and history Robyn Arianrhod is a writer and mathematician.

Since her radical student days as an activist in the counter-culture, she has been interested in blending the ‘two cultures’ of humanities and science, and this is reflected in the blending of genres that is characteristic of her writing about science. Her books, Einstein’s Heroes: Imagining the world through the language of mathematics, and Seduced by Logic: Émilie du Châtelet, Mary Somerville and the Newtonian Revolution, have been published internationally, and have been shortlisted for several national literary awards.

Robyn received her PhD from Monash University for a thesis on Einstein’s theory of gravity.

She taught for many years in the School of Mathematical Sciences at Monash, where she is currently an Adjunct Research Fellow working in the field of general relativity. She is an examiner in Monash College’s Foundation Year Program, and a member of its Board of Studies. She is also a technical reviewer for the American Mathematical Society. Over the years, she has taught mathematics in a variety of contexts, including a special program for disadvantaged students at Victoria University, and in programs for Aboriginal students and for women.

In 2005, she was awarded a six-month literary residency at the Australia Council’s Keesing Studio in the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, and she has been a guest at writers’ festivals in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Byron Bay, Oxford and Rome. In 2013, she returned to the Cité des Arts, and was also a Visiting Scholar at the American University in Paris.

Dr Arianrhod’s Twilight Lecture will begin with her own rocky love affair with mathematical science – an affair that eventually led her to view mathematical physics as one of the most sublime and unifying examples of human creativity. She will talk about the lives and work of some of her scientific heroes and heroines, and about how she became inspired to write about their ‘mathematical love stories’.

Having recently found out that a member of my family has a form of leukemia and is given an estimated amount of time left, I would like to do everything in my power to help out in the fight against blood cancer. Now as much as I would love to be busy finding a cure, the most I can do is try and raise as much money as possible, and afterwards shave my head in awareness of the disease. We are pleased to welcome new Resident Members to our membership association and residential college, and happy to see back again those who took a break away over the summer period (as well as those who remained guarding the quiet fort!).

Meet and Greets (MaGs) are an inherent part of the college and graduate experience. Held alternatively on the last Tuesday and second Friday of each month, The Graduate Union provides a meal and free drinks to Resident Members. Non-resident Members, visitors and your guests pay bar prices.

At each MaG, you are updated on the latest association and college news, and encouraged to take full advantage of this unique period of being with the world’s best and brightest. Each Resident Member is expected to share their ‘graduate pathway’ story (where they are from; why they are here; where they are going) at one Meet and Greet during the year. Outside speakers also come in to inform you of graduate life and volunteering opportunities.

The Graduate Union encourages graduates - young and old - to acknowledge the privilege of education and to hold responsibility collectively for giving back to society.

The 1st MaG for 2014 is on Tuesday, 25th February from 6.45pm and the 2nd, on Friday, 14th March from 6.00pm along with the welcome Summer BBQ for all graduates (see page 11), the Friday Drinks and Dinner (page 4) and Scottie’s shave (page 10).

Congratulations also go to Ms Mayuka Maekawa who returned to Australia for graduation as a Doctor of Anthropology, her successful PhD from the School of Social and Political Sciences being entitled Orientalism/Occidentalism: representations of a Japanese martial art in Melbourne.

University Sector News Smarter Than Yew Think It is generally assumed that plants have a limited range of capabilities that, for the most part, include growing, blooming and maybe even producing fruit. However, new research from the University of Western Australia (UWA) suggests that plants can also remember and learn, notwithstanding the absence of a brain!

The research leader of the international team of researchers undertaking this innovative work is Dr Monica Gagliano, an Australian Research Council Research Fellow at UWA’s Centre for Evolutionary Biology. In this research she studied the Mimosa plant which is native to South and Central America and known as the ‘touch-me-not’ because its leaves close rapidly in response to such stimuli as touch and wind. This so-called seismonastic movement results because the plant stems release chemicals to force water out of the leave cells causing their collapse.

The researchers tested the short and long term memory of the Mimosa by dripping water repeatedly on the leaves under different lighting conditions. Though the initial response of the leaves was to curl up in a protective manner, within seconds the plants stopped reacting to the water as if ‘learning’ that the repeated disturbance was not harmful. The plants acquired the learnt behaviour more quickly in lower light conditions. Most remarkably, these plants ‘remembered’ what had been learned for several weeks, even after environmental conditions had changed.

As explained by Dr Gagliano: “Plants may lack brains and neural tissue but they do possess a sophisticated calcium-based signal network in their cells similar to animals’ memory processes.”

Creating Creative Commons, Careful Copyright Copyright law has been impacted greatly by the emergence of the digital age. The internet has more images shared daily than there are people in the world.

Unfortunately, those images are not always shared in the best interests of the owner. By placing an image on the internet it becomes accessible to almost anyone, unless proper security measures are in place. Once your image is seen, it can be saved, altered, copied, shared or printed. As sinister as this may sound, image services, such as Google Images, are not often means to a malicious end, being used regularly, for example, for school projects and work presentations. Regardless, without the consent of the owner of the image that school project may be infringing upon copyright laws.

Enter Creative Commons, a website designed to offer copyright free images and documents for public consumption. A world wide project, Creative Commons encourages copyright owners to allow others to share, reuse and remix their material, legally. It gives the owners listings ranging from ‘all’ to ‘some’ rights reserved. Operating much like Google Images, this means that you can search the web for almost anything and have access to many photos for ‘proper’ use.

University Sector News The Mystery of the Cicada in the Dark Net On the 5th January, 2012, a single image appeared on the internet, posted by an on-line chat room user known as Cicada3301. The white text in the otherwise black box image read: “We are looking for highly intelligent individuals To find them, we have devised a test. There is a message hidden in this image. Find it, and you are on your wayto finding us.”

Quickly getting re-posted, it is thought that millions took the bait and thence the journey through a series of complex cryptographic puzzles. One month later, a similar black box re-appeared to announce that the individuals sought had been found.

A recruitment drive, an intelligence gathering exercise, an on-line game for fun? - nobody knows, but certainly many have tried to find out, and those who are said to have solved the so-called Dark Net puzzle remain tight-lipped. Whatever the intent, the one month challenge was repeated in 2013, and, sure enough, on the 5th January this year, the curiosity of the on-line world was ignited again by a message through Twitter that read: “Epiphany is upon you. Your pilgrimage has begun. Enlightment awaits.

Each of these so-called Dark Net puzzles has involved referencing such materials as The Mabinogion (prose stories from medieval Welsh manuscripts), William Blake works (e.g., Nebushadnessar and The Marraige of Heaven and Hell), Mayan numerals, and many more; as well as travelling to clue sites in several USA states, as well as in Spain, Japan, Russia, France, South Korea, and Poland.

It is, of course, always interesting to watch how people respond to a challenge of their intelligence!

Our assumption is that you have until the 6th February this year to test your own response.

Three Thousand Wild Tigers In 100 years, with current human behaviour, every wild tiger on earth will be eliminated. Yet 100 years ago there were >100,000 tigers in over thirty countries.

Today, about 3,000 exist in twelve countries.

Sharon Guynup of National Geographic attributes the lack of media attention on this felid tragedy, in part, to the general public seeing tigers almost as commonplace (e.g., in zoos), and in part, to the conservation agencies with the ‘squeakiest wheels’ receiving large donations over the last forty years but not necessarily applying best practices to prevent extinction.

Unfortunately, captive tigers don’t count towards the wild gene pool. If released, they would not have the necessary skills to hunt, to retain their territory and to stay healthy, alive and reproducing. Their familiarity with people would make them a danger to themselves and others (e.g., hunters).

Sharon reassures us that tigers are not yet extinct, that a female can give birth to 15 cubs in her lifetime, that there remains enough habitat to support healthy populations and that we now have the knowledge of how to provide protection for the tigers and their prey. However, tighter regulation of the expenditure of donated funds on evidence-based practice might be an idea!

GU Vaccinations With ISG (Influenza Specialist Group), The Graduate Union presents its third annual Influenza Vaccination Day. This is a free community service - all Members and Resident Members are welcome; as are all graduates, their families and friends.

The Graduate Union extends again a warm welcome to organisations that work with people most at risk with influenza viruses. These include the Asthma Foundation Victoria and the Stroke Foundation, and possibly also Kidney Health Australia, Diabetes Australia Victoria, the Heart Foundation, the Victorian Obesity Consortium and Mens Shed. Darebin City Council and Resident Member (trained) volunteers will also be taking measurements (weight, height, blood pressure) and giving healthy life skills advice.

Reminiscing for pre-1956 Graduates

It is our pleasure to invite you to our inaugural Reminiscing Day for pre-1956 Graduates on Sunday, 30th March, 2014.

Upon arrival at 11:30am, you will be met with tea and coffee in the Phillip Law Members’ Lounge and a photographic exhibit from the era.

This will be followed by a1950s inspired lunch and time for reminiscing.

At 2:30pm a concert will be performed by Deborah Cheetham (opera singer), Toni Lalich (pianist) and the President of The Graduate Union, Major General Professor Jeffrey Rosenfeld (on clarinet).

We encourage Members to send in stories, photographs and pictures of the period for display on the day, and for publication; and to share your memories (good and bad) of being a graduate in the first half of the 20th century.

Family and friends are more than welcome to attend, and please invite along your nonmember alumni and colleagues. This is an event to celebrate a special era of tertiary education in Australia and, indeed, the world. Chairman’s Cocktail Party Review 6th December 2013 Our Chairman, The Hon. Justice Tony (Gaetano) Pagone, hosted the annual cocktail party for Members on Friday the 6th December, 2014. With a large crowd expected, all staff, from administration to floor staff and the culinary team, had been kept busy for weeks to ensure that the event went smoothly and to plan. The setting was the ground floor of the Stella Langford Wing, the meeting rooms having been decorated in full splendour with fresh floral bouquets as centrepieces amongst generous platters of seafood.

Members and guests began arriving from 5.15pm and were ushered in to the party, receiving drinks on entry, after a quick registration. The Hon Justice Pagone began his address promptly at 6.00pm, introducing himself and welcoming Members and guests. He then spoke to his activities as Chairman since adopting the position mid-2013 and to the Council’s 2014 outlook. The speech was well received though there was the fully anticipated banter that comes when declaring one’s university of graduation!

The Chairman then introduced Mr Rhys Watson who gave a short presentation about the M.V. Anderson Awards and their significance. A descendant of Magnus Victor Anderson, Rhys explained that the medal is donated by the family to recognise the achievements of Resident Members who have developed skills and the knowledge to share and develop concepts and ideas with other influencers. The Graduate Union extends gratitude to Rhys and Bruce Watson for these awards, and to the maker of the elegant brass medallian, sculptor, Michael Meszaros OAM. The first recipient of the MV Anderson Award was Mr Andrew Harris in recognition of his achievements in the fields of business administration and chemical engineering, and for his contribution to the community life of Graduate House.

Andrew is studying for a Master of Business Administration at the Melbourne School of Business, having first completed his undergraduate degree in chemical engineering in South Africa to then gain industry experience in this field.

The next recipient was Ms Louise Mcleod for excellence in primary school teaching, for having received a 2013 ViceChancellor’s Engagement Award and for her contribution to the community life of Graduate House. Louise is studying for a Master of Primary Teaching at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education and, together with Elizabeth Watson and Nathan Welsh, had won a University Dreamlarge grant to work with The Royal Children’s Hospital on the Jumbunna Film Festival in November 2013. The festival, named after the Wurundjeri people’s word for ‘storytelling’, is an opportunity for patients of the hospital to take part in a wide range of learning activities.

On congratulating the recipients of the AV Anderson awards, The Hon. Justice Pagone wished them well for the future and thanked Members for their support in strengthening the collegiate fabric of the membership association in and beyond residency.

Life Member Mrs Anne Mulholland was acknowledged for her contribution and enduring commitment to Members and guests enjoy canapÊs, seafood, drinks and networking. organising and reporting on the Women’s Forum and for her assistance with the monthly mailouts of The Graduate Union communications.

Welcomed to the stage in Italian, Ms Francesca FolkScolaro was acknowledged for her generous time and expertise in providing Italian language education dinners twice a month for many years.

Life Members Betty Keay and Graham Skewes (an apology on the night) were acknowledged for their longstanding contributions to organising the weekly Bridge Nights at Graduate House.

Tim Stephens, having been a Duty Resident since 2004, has provided welcomes and support to many cohorts of incoming graduates and is a much loved and valued member of our college. Resident Members Milena Glasson (an apology on the night) and Zoe Ma, Duty Residents since 2012 and 2013 respectively, were also recognised for their contributions in assisting us all in making this one of the most popular residential colleges for graduates in the world.

The formal proceedings concluded with the Chairman thanking Members and guests for attending and extending gratitude on behalf of all Members to the Graduate Union staff members for their dedication and hard work in making the evening such a success.

The Graduate Union welcomed Members and guests to our final 2013 Member function, the Members’ Christmas Party, on Friday the 13th of December. The dining room was decked with bows of holly, adorned with Christmas bon bons and strewn with colourful decorations. Each table also had scrolls that had been prepared by Member Ms Jennifer Gill so that all could join in singing along to the carols. Thank you Jennifer.

Arriving in Christmas-best garb and festive colours, Members and quests were greeted with drinks and canapés served by staff wearing the usual Christmas-themed hats (with Daniel Clark, our Operations Manager heavily disguised as Helga). Santa arrived early to hand out sweets and for the photo booth (with only a few Members choosing to sit on his lap). A particularly special welcome was extended to Life Members Quentin and Lois Cooke who joined our Association in 1974 and, on this, their first visit to the facility, chose to celebrate both Christmas and their wedding anniversary with family and friends!

Following plattered entrées of oysters, prawns, smoked salmon and Parma ham and peach salad, our MC for the night, Helga, welcomed members and introduced the wonderful entertainment, Jennifer Gill (soprano) and a brass quintet of Victorian College of the Arts students, who entered the room led by the trumpet player. The party crowd then joined Jennifer and the quintet in singing many favourite traditional carols.

The main course included seasoned turkey and salmon fillet; and dessert, plum pudding with brandy sauce and summer pudding with fresh fruit coulis.

Members won prizes that included the beautiful Poinsetta table centrepieces, wines and champagnes, and vouchers. The lucky winner of the Christmas hamper was Grietja Croll while Nancy Chamberlain won the Accommodation Voucher, and bistro patron Dr Suras Pandey, the $500 Myer voucher.

Congratulations to these and the other winners and thank you all for contributing to a wonderful festive function. We look forward to welcoming you all back in the New Year!

Seen at Graduate House A Golden Reunion Organised by Professor Joan McMeeken AM, from the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, The Graduate Union hosted a reunion lunch on the 6th November, 2013 for more than thirty physiotherapists who graduated fifty years ago.

Several people came from interstate and there were many well-wishers from overseas. Alumni recalled their experiences as students and shared stories of their ‘graduate pathways’ since.

With their first such experience at Graduate House, they enjoyed the ambience of the Johnston Library at lunch on the 8th November, 2013. The Rotary Club of Carlton - Hat Day The distinguished and usually reserved members of Carlton Rotary Club meet every Tuesday at Graduate House. However, the 19th November occasion revealed a lighter side at their special lunch meeting to celebrate Hat Day. An annual fund-raising event, Hat Day is to support Australian Rotary Health which is a major supporter of mental health research and awareness in Australia. Members and guests all wore a special (or not-so, as the case may be perceived) hat with prizes for those judged as the best.

On a more serious note, the speaker, Professor Jane Pirkis from Melbourne School of Population and Global Health, spoke to the correlation between media reports of suicide and suicide rates. Seen at Graduate House Barbara and Sigrid Weller On 12th December, 2013 Barbara had lunch with Sigrid Weller, a resident at Graduate House in the 1960s. Following her marriage to glaciologist Dr Gunter Weller, Sigrid lived in Melbourne for 18 months before Gunter went on an expedition to Fairbanks, Alaska. During this time, Sigrid moved into Graduate House to undertake her PhD at the Howard Florey Institute.

Reflecting on these times, Sigrid says that it was a wonderful experience to live here and praises the foresight and vision of people like William Berry and Barbara Funder for its establishment. She was pleased to see the wonderful developments to the college since her time. Sigrid and Gunter Weller lived for many years in Alaska before moving back to Australia. They now live at Foster, Victoria on a few acres which they are replanting with Australian natives. The photo on the right is taken from The Melbourne Graduate Issue Vol XVI-No.1, dated 1st March, 1965.

Council News Meet our new co-opted Council member The Graduate Union is proud to announce and welcome Jennifer Batrouney S.C. to Council. Jennifer is a silk at the Victorian Bar practising in taxation, commercial, administrative, superannuation and charity law. Jennifer has had a distinguished legal career and is a former President of Australian Women Lawyers, the peak body for women lawyers associations throughout Australia.

After growing up in Adelaide, Jennifer studied at The University of Melbourne and graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (with honours) and a Bachelor of Commerce (majoring in accounting) in 1987. She spent her first year of university as a resident in St Hilda’s College and thoroughly enjoyed college life. Her current position is Senior Counsel at the Victorian Bar. Jennifer has been a Life Member of The Graduate Union since 1986.

Council is the governing body of The Graduate Union of The University of Melbourne Incorporated.

In addition to two Councillors who are nominated by the Vice-Chancellor of The University of Melbourne, it comprises of twelve Councillors who are elected by the Resident and non-resident Members of the Association across the world; and who are responsible persons as termed in the Australian Charities and Not for profits Commission Amendment Regulation 2013 (No. 1). Each year, elections to Council take place from February and the results are announced at the annual general meeting late May. The Notice of Election is included with this newsletter and shows that The Call for Nominations opens on the 11th of February and closes on the 20th March.

Where Are You Now? The Graduate Union College Alumni (GUCA) want to get in touch with past residents. If you, or anyone you know, has ever stayed at Graduate House since 1962 – whether it was for one night or for three years; whether it was you, your parent or grandparent, or their friends, please contact us by phone or email, or send us a letter so that we can add you and them to our year lists and keep in touch.

After fifty years as a membership Association, The Graduate Union became also a residential college in the early 1960s Gladstone Terraces (Deidre Walsh, 2011). providing initially for seven residents and increasing to 24 rooms three years later. By 1971, there were 54 rooms in the William Berry Wing. With the addition of three storeys of accommodation in the main building (2005) and ten apartments in the Stella Langford Wing (2010), in 2014, we have 114 rooms and about 600 different residents residing here each year.
