Melbourne Medical School 150th Anniversary Sculpting a history of medical knowledge A group of 1972 medical graduate alumni commissioned a sculpture to mark the 150th anniversary of the Melbourne University’s Medical School. The sculpture which stands at 2.2 metres tall was unveiled outside the Medical Building on Monday, 12th August at an evening ceremony attended by well-known Melbourne sculptor Michael Meszaros and his family, the donors who commissioned the work, and representatives and alumni from the Medical School and across the University.

The More We Know Sculpture

Crafted by Mr. Meszaros, the sculpture expresses the development in medical knowledge, practice and technology during the last 150 years. The work is made up of four silhouette figures joined side by side in an irregular arrangement. Each of these figures represents the stage of medical knowledge and practice at roughly fifty-year intervals over the 150-year period.

Many would be familiar with Mr Meszaros’ work. He is responsible for a number of prominent public sculptures, including the piece that sits outside the Royal Women’s Hospital. He is wellknown for his medal work, some of which is exhibited in University House. Members will recall his most recent work to acknowledge the bequest from Dr Phillip Law and displayed in the members lounge at The Graduate Union.

The sculpture was made possible by the generous donations of a group of 1972 medical graduates: Professor James Best, Dr James Butler AM, Professor Anthony Costello, Professor Stephen Davis AM, Associate Professor Michael Denton, Dr Gail Littlejohn, Associate Professor Leslie Reti, Professor James Tatoulis and Professor Doris Young.

Professor Zeger Degraeve

Decision making for leaders

Professor Zeger Degraeve (B.Sc (Ghent) MBA (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven) PhD (Chicago)) is Dean of Melbourne Business School and a former Professor of Decision Sciences at London Business School. He is a leading expert in decision making, operations research and the management of project portfolios. An award-winning teacher, he has contributed to executive development programs in Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East and North America for such leading businesses as HSBC, Cadbury Schweppes, Rio Tinto, Carlsberg and IBM. After studying at the Universities of Ghent and Leuven in Belgium, Zeger Degraeve gained his PhD from the Graduate School of Business at the University of Chicago. He was Professor of Management Science in the Department of Applied Economics at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, before joining London Business School in 1999 where he served as Deputy Dean (Programs) and as a member of the School’s Management Committee from 2006 to 2009, during which time he established London Business School’s new centre in Dubai and was the centre’s faculty director. In July 2008, he was appointed Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Professor of Innovation at London Business School in recognition of his innovative work in establishing London Business School programs at a foreign location.

For this last Twilight Lecture in 2013, Professor Degraeve will focus on how leaders learn and self-train to become leaders. Business leaders constantly make important decisions with lasting consequences, often facing tremendous uncertainty. Don’t you find it surprising that most of them are self-trained in decision making? In this talk, he will explore answers to questions like: How do we make good decisions facing uncertainty? and What are we accountable for while making decisions? He hopes to demonstrate that decision making is a process that we can all learn and master.

Daylesford Day Trip review Saturday 24th August

We assembled in the bistro at Graduate House at 7.30am, celebrating the early start with lovely coffee and muffins before our journey. The fifteen of use travelled in two hired vehicles, one driven by Accommodation Manager Diana Moyses, and the other by resident member Paul Bryne.

The journey to the beautiful town of Daylesford and the neighbouring Hepburn Springs, famous for its mineral spas, took around an hour and a half. We enjoyed the view of the villas hidden amongst the trees along the way, and also loved the abundance of blooming flowers, even though it was just a little too early to appreciate the full spring.

Once we arrived, the group split into two. Eight of us enjoyed the Mineral Spa for the day, while the others discovered the benefits of water from mineral springs while walking around one of the many lakes. We just could not resist taking snapshots.

The view from every angle was just spectacular. We then made our way towards the town centre.

Being small, Daylesford is quite easy to navigate on foot. Some of us did some shopping in the commercial centre located along Albert and Vincent Streets which have a number of beautiful historic buildings including the post office, town hall and several hotels and shops. The people of Daylesford are welcoming and friendly. We also visited some neighbouring quaint small towns/villages. For many of us first-time visitors, they seemed to shout country-style hospitality with the streetscapes bursting with character and ranging from the bluestones of early Swiss-Italian migrants to the historic remnants of the gold rush.

We were spoilt for choice when it came to lunch. Some of us enjoyed a delicious cost efficient lunch from an Indian restaurant while others ate at the Farmers Arms. Unfortunately, we missed our chance to visit the museum because it was closed in the afternoon. We were told that the Daylesford museum lets you discover how these vibrant communities got started and learn the stories of early settlers. Everyone in the group agreed that Daylesford is an amazing place, as picture perfect as can be. We are all hoping to be able to return for another memorable weekend.

Not surprisingly, the journey home was quiet. This was due mainly to all bar the drivers being sound asleep.

There are plans for trips of a similar nature in 2014. We thoroughly recommend going as a college group so please do look out for details in future newsletters.

Professor Stephen Duckett Silver tsunami or grey glacier?

Next generation issues in health and health care in Australia.

Professor Stephen Duckett is Director of the Health Program at the Grattan Institute in Melbourne (which is situated in a building just behind the Graduate Union on Grattan Street) and Professor of Health Policy at La Trobe University. He has held senior health care leadership positions in Australia and Canada, with a reputation for creativity, evidencebased innovation and reform in areas as diverse as hospital funding (introduction of activity-based funding for hospitals) and quality (new systems of measurement and accountability for safety of hospital care).

Professor Duckett is an economist with a Masters and PhD in Health Administration from the University of New South Wales and a higher doctorate, the DSc, awarded on the basis of his scholarly contributions, from the Faculty of Medicine of the same University. He is a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.

In this presentation, he will discuss the health of the ‘baby boomers’ and older generations and the challenges in providing economic, high quality and long term health care.

New music from Hush Foundation As a mother herself, Dr Catherine Crock, who works with children with cancer at The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, is well aware that the hospital environment can be a daunting experience to these young patients.

In 2001, she thus initiated the HUSH Music Foundation.

From small beginnings this Foundation now gives benefit nationally. Every year, a group of Australia’s most talented musicians produces a CD of calm and soothing music. In 2001, the CD was entitled HUSH Collection: Classical music for complete calm. Volume 1. TRIO GRANDE. In 2013, the latest release is entitled the HUSH Collection: The Wind in the Willows. Volume 12. MARK ISAACS. The launch concert for this new CD will be held on Wednesday 3rd October at 7.30pm and will be broadcast on ABC Classic FM across Australia (in Melbourne on 105.9) and online.

The HUSH Collection (now of 12 volumes) is distributed to all childrens hospitals for use in operating theatres, treatment rooms, on the wards and in waiting areas, as well as in intensive-care units and nurseries to manage unsettled babies.

Ken Murray

Doug de Vries

Ken Murray has developed a singular path as a guitarist combining performance, composition, teaching and research.

Doug de Vries is one of Australia’s foremost guitarists and a significant composer for the guitar.

Ken has championed and recorded Spanish music from the early twentieth century, worked extensively with contemporary composers and has been active as a performer of Brazilian and South American musical styles.

Composition is increasingly becoming a focus and he has written a variety of works for guitar in solo and ensemble settings. As a teacher he has over twenty years of experience at home and overseas.

Doug excels in many musical genres, from jazz to choro, tango and bossa nova. He is considered Australia’s leading exponent of Brazilian guitar repertoire and recently released a solo album of original works and classic Brazilian repertoire, DdV Solo.

He is particularly noted for his sophisticated accompaniments, deep knowledge and daring improvisations whether in solo or group settings.

Sunday Concert review August 11th, 2013 We were privileged to welcome back the distinguished musicians, Hoang Pham on piano and Ji Won Kim on violin, this time performing delightful spring pieces. Held in the Stella Langford Wing, the young duo charmed an appreciative audience with an hour long performance of spring flavoured music. These exciting musical pieces brought about a sense of adventure as the audience enjoyed the brisk tempo and fiery spring rhythms. A piano and violin alternated the melody of the music with the musical textures changing delicately as our pianist took the melody with violinist in accompaniment. The rhythm,seemingly in tune with the heart beats of the audience, increased in tempo and by the climax of the song, the audience was left swaying along to the melody. Our artists played in crescendo until both instruments met at the top with a bang and the dynamics changed again to a moderate level until the song concluded. The applause was huge!

The highlight of the concert was Beethoven’s marvellous ‘Spring’ Sonata for violin and piano, an appropriate choice in keeping with the theme of the day. This was preceded by the ‘Pathetique’ Sonata for solo piano, a passionate and dramatic work in which Beethoven further developed the sonata form and broke free from the classical constraints of Haydn and Mozart. In between the two Beethoven works, Hoang and Ji Won played Gounod’s ‘Ave Maria’, the famous transcription of the first prelude in Book 1 of Bach’s 48 Preludes and Fugues with the added melody line for violin, and Mendelssohn’s Spring Song (which many former piano students will remember).

The program also included four well known works by Chopin, including two masterly transcriptions in which the ‘singing’ line was transferred to the violin. The concert concluded with a Heifetz arrangement of one of Rachmaninoff ’s Etude-tableaux, which as Hoang put it, ‘transfers the Russian composer’s finger busting piano writing to the violin in spectacular fashion’.

In an unusual move Hoang played an improvised introduction to the Beethoven sonatas to ‘set the scene’, evidently following a practice popular in the past.

The concert was recorded by 3MBS team of Ben and Paul for future broadcast. We shall endeavour to let Members know of the date it will go to air.

We are looking forward to the next Sunday Concert - the last for the year - on the 13th October, when guitarists Ken Murray and Doug de Vries will play a selection of Spanish and South American classical pieces and jazz which express all the rhythmic vitality of that tradition. You may remember Ken was with us last year when he accompanied soprano Greta Bradman in some exquisite Spanish songs. We hope that you will join us.

Professor Chris Briggs The speaker drawing Members and guests to the August monthly luncheon was Professor Chris Briggs and his interesting topic of forensic anthropology. Prior to the talk, the attending Members gathered in the Phillip Law Members Lounge for drinks and conversation. When everyone was seated inside the Ian Potter and Stillwell Rooms, lunch was served: a scrumptious lamb back-strap with roasted pumpkin and red capsicum, and a creamy peppercorn sauce; followed by a flourless orange poppyseed cake.

As dessert was being served, Professor Briggs began his talk. His first words were to explain his origins. They concerned a cousin of his, who had made sure to have his child born in Liverpool, England, by assisting his heavily pregnant wife in labour across the ‘border’ for the birth. The reason? Liverpool, at that stage, had strict rules on who was allowed to play in their club; the main criteria being that players had to have been born in Liverpool!

Following the story, Chris claimed that he would not apologise for his love of cricket (or indeed, for any other sport) to which attending Members chuckled and from the back of the room one could be heard to say ‘It’s okay, we’re a forgiving bunch’. Cricket aside, Professor Briggs began discussing his avid interest in the science of forensic anthropology.

For those of our Members who may remember, Professor Briggs referenced a particular television show entitled Quincy M.E. which aired in the 1980s. He spoke of Quincy’s miraculous ability to look at a skeleton and suddenly understand that the pile of bones was once a male, Caucasian, middle aged, Armenian, blonde hair, blue eyes, etc. Professor Briggs explained that while a skeleton may not reveal such detail as eye or skin colour, characteristics such as age and gender are more than assumable from the shape and size of certain parts of the skeleton. Indeed, the science of identifying details from skeletons was first proposed in 1878, and was furthered significantly following World War II as the need to identify casualties became all too frequent. Professor Briggs also noted that one of the first laboratories for the purpose of forensic anthropology was built in Argentina. This same laboratory remains to this day, and remains the leader in this field.

On the process of identifying a body, Professor Briggs laughed off the media sensationalised CSI-like nature of forensics (though he was in search of a leather jacket to match ‘Horatio’s should any of our Members be kind enough to so donate). That’s not to say there aren’t events that would provide even a television show character with a challenge. For example, Professor Briggs described one particular incident regarding a train that had been caught in a tsunami in South-East Asia and resulted in the death of all aboard. Professor Briggs and a number of other specialists investigated the site to extract and number the bodies, now skeletons and scattered as a result of being in the ‘washing machine’-like churn. He began describing the process as being one undertaken in conjunction with a lot of other ‘ologists’ - pathologists, radiologists and odontologists, to name a few. www.graduatehouse.com.au | ABN: 55610 664 963 | Incorporated Association Registration No. A0023234B

He explained that each of these professions plays a significant role in assisting the process of identification and in determining the ‘how’ and ‘when’ of the death. He noted that there are several steps to take when dealing with mass graves such as that of the train incident.

First of all, the collection of the bones is a delicate process. (This was illustrated graphically in a later part of the presentation with a poignant photograph of nine flags on nine small piles of ash in one room of a house destroyed in the 2009 bush fires). Another process is to identify, following collection of bones, whether they are human or animal, a somewhat macabre task of assembling skeletons, as if jigsaws. Following assembly, the task is then to ascertain whether all the bones brought together in a single skeleton are from the one individual, or whether there are multiple owners.

One case with which Professor Briggs became involved was after a company had commenced excavation for a major development along the Murray River, and come across a number of skeleton pieces. Though it was deemed that the majority of bones belonged to animals, there was a single jaw from one human, and a tooth from another. After determining that there were no suspicious circumstances, it was concluded that the excavators had inadvertently disturbed an aboriginal burial ground. Professor Briggs noted that any body found that seemed to be over 100 years old was deemed ‘a historical find’.

Another case, used to illustrate how bones are dated to provide authorities with the age of an individual, involved a young man who, on the run from the police, had jumped into a lake to escape and then disappeared. Some time later, a skeleton, washed up on the shores of the lake, was x-rayed to determine whether it belonged to the young escapee. The x-rays showed growth lines near the end (head) of the femur (long thigh bone) that indicated that the owner of the skeleton still had some growing to do. The size of the bones indicated also that the remains were from a male.

Professor Briggs also mentioned two significant historical cases. The first related to bones found in a box in Echuka that, with further analysis, were identified as belonging to someone of Turkish origin. In determining the likely date of death and with further investigation of the containing box, it was found most shamefully, that the box had been a ‘trophy’ brought back from the war. It was subsequently returned with sincere national apology.

The second historical case mentioned was slightly more famous. Professor Briggs, of course, spoke about the discovery of the bones of Ned Kelly, the iconic Australian outlaw. To begin, he explained that the bones had been discovered when various sets of remains were being moved from the old Melbourne Gaol during its redevelopment some years ago. During this move, they were almost all lost - the box fell and a number of bones rolled down to where a group of children were playing. Some lads, of course, then ran off gleefully with their bounty. Fortunately, the young thieves were rounded up promptly and, on the whole, the famous renegades bones were recovered. With photographs and x-rays of a near entire skeleton, Professor Briggs outlined why he was confident that the bones were those of Ned Kelly. To begin, the neck bone fractures pointed clearly to a hanging and corresponded well to the published description of the hanging by the hangman. However, it was the bullet holes and other fractures that spoke to the life of a man who was constantly being injured with his fight and flight existence before capture, internment and execution.

These tutorials will be individualised for ‘tutees’ who are: • undergraduates in any discipline; • senior secondary school students (e.g. those undertaking VCE); • seeking to pass the IELTS (International English Language Testing System); • seeking to learn or improve in other languages; • post-graduates needing specialist tutorials – e.g. to edit their theses; • undertaking course entry tests (e.g., the Graduate Management Admission Test).

UNIVERSITY SECTOR NEWS Watch Out! Digital Changes Are Coming.

Most of our Members sport a timepiece, and whether it be your typical wristwatch or a smart pocket watch, the means of checking the time is carried with you. In contemporary times, the timepiece has been replaced with smart phones and iPods which offer a brightly lit, digital interpretation of a clock face or a coloured set of numbers that animate themselves as they change. Indeed, many youth of today see the timepiece as a symbol of sophistication or elegance rather than an effective means of noting the time. While some watch companies market their time pieces more as a fashion statement than a utility, other companies view the timepiece as a means of expanding, and revolutionising, the digital market.

Samsung, for example, has begun development on the ‘smart watch’, a timepiece that sits much like a wristwatch, but with all the capabilities of a digital touchscreen smartphone. How is that possible you may (or may not) ask? A flexible, conductive screen gives the illusion (and function) of being a clock face, but once touched reverts to a smaller version of your touch phone screen, with wireless call capabilities, internet access and a digital calendar.

In the not too distant future, it is envisioned that will use these wrist accessories as a means of payment, similar to the ‘touch and pay’ systems currently in those machines that until recently had required card swiping, receipt signing and some form of interaction passing as customer service. Imagine opening your car by touching a button on your watch, or using your watch as identification. The possibilities are endless (and yes, a tad terrifying!).

Even so, it has yet to be replaced, and is still the only commercial flight to have gone at speeds of Mach 2. The Rolls Royce – Olympus powered Airbus cut through the air while those aboard enjoyed champagne and fine food. Passengers who could afford a trip on the luxury plane were so high up, it is said, that they could look through the windows and see dark blue space above them and the curvature of the earth below.

Concorde was a rather singular aircraft. Just fourteen out of the twenty built went into service.

When the Anglo-French design made its public debut in Toulouse in 1967, two years before its maiden flight, there was talk of seventy-four orders from sixteen airlines. Pan-Am went so far as to take out advertisements in the British press welcoming the “aircraft of the future”. Sadly, however, the future of flying was to be anything but Concorde, or Pan-Am. The most recent addition to the modern day aircraft scene supports neither passengers nor pilots. Drones are aircrafts that are remotely controlled from a ground base and fly for up to 28 hours. The Drone program has been controversial, to say the least. Little do many know that the Drone program is involved only in part with military operations. The majority of its focus is in scientific research in other fields. NASA, for example, uses its ‘Hurricane’ Drone for atmospheric pressure and meteorological readings. UNIVERSITY SECTOR NEWS Famous Fakes And Photographic Phonies Photography is one of the great proofs of the 21st Century, providing visual evidence of any claim. Faking photographs is no new crime, but with the rise of Photoshop and other photo editing programs, photo doctoring has never been easier, and has become much harder to spot.

In the past, placing something in a photo would consist of cutting out an image and placing it on top of another, before taking a photo of the two. Nowadays, any computer savvy person can mix a thousand images to make a completely new image. Similarly, when removing an item from a photo, the new method of ‘cutting’ and ‘pasting’ digitally has replaced the difficult process of painting the background of older photos.

To prove an image has been tampered with, various companies have developed means of photo forensics, many of which consist of software that detect minute faults in an image’s surface, and inconsistencies in shadowing or light. There is also now a Museum in Geneva dedicated to the art of photo doctoring and sheds light on some of the most famous photo fakes of our time.

Below are some fakes that have made it into the international arena throughout history.

The original photo of Quenn Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, the queen mother, and Canadian Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King, taken in Banff, Alberta, in 1939 included King George VI on the right. King George VI was removed when it was used on an election poster for King, possibly to portray him as more powerful.

This portrait of Abraham Lincoln (left) circa 1860 is of Lincoln’s head but Southern politician John Calhoun’s body. It was created because there was no suitably regal photograph of the President at the time but upon discovering the composite, later pilloried because Calhoun was an advocate for slavery.

UNIVERSITY SECTOR NEWS This Will Heart-ly Hurt At All As many of you know, The Graduate Union hosted the very successful launch of the be flusmart and you’re a lifesaver campaign and the opening of the national Influenza Vaccination season on Thursday, 14th March. Thanks to our collaboration with Influenza Specialist Group (ISG), more than a hundred people of all ages had the advantage of free flu shots.

We have previously outlined the benefits of receiving the shot, and point now to a recent Australian study showing that flu vaccination reduces the chance of heart attack in those over the age of 40 years. Through analysis of five hundred patients in a Sydney hospital over a two year period, a significant reduction in the risk of heart attack was found for those who had had the influenza vaccinations. According to the study, those without the shot were more than twice as likely to be at risk of heart attack.

The researchers have thus recommended that cardiologists review people between the ages of 50 and 64 years who are at risk of heart attacks but not targeted (in public health campaigns) for vaccinations each year.

Julie Redfern, a Senior Research Fellow with the Cardiovascular Division at George Institute for Global Health (and who was not involved in the study) welcomed the finding: Prevention of heart attacks and cardiovascular disease is a national health priority. Improving risk factors and implementing other simple measures aimed at preventing heart attacks and reducing the burden of disease are of great importance.

We remind all Members that the viruses of today are ever changing and increasingly potent and dangerous. The World Health Organisation (WHO) advises vaccination at all ages. For those returning to the Northern Hemisphere winter, remember that now is the time for the WHOrecommended composite vaccination. UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE OPEN DAY Sunday, August 18th 2013 As with previous years, The University of Melbourne held an Open Day on the 18th August, welcoming prospective students and their families by providing the information needed to apply to the University for undergraduate and graduate courses. A portion of Grattan Street was closed to traffic and University Square had vendor stalls stretching from Pelham to Grattan Street, and into the University entrance at Gate 9.

In conjunction with this day, The Graduate Union was also open to welcome prospective members from the crowds of graduates seeking to undertake postgraduate study, as well as form the entourages of parents, carers, relatives and friends. We were pleased to have this opportunity to showcase our facilities by conducting guided tours, offering snacks and beverages in the Phillip Law Members Lounge and providing information to promote joining of our association.

Staff arrived from 8.00am onwards to prepare displays, merchandise (our college garb) and information packs. The lounge area was ready with muffins and coffee, and the sausage sizzle was up and running by 9.00am. Trays of sausages with bread were quickly snapped up by potential students and visitors. We thank the visitors who dropped by Graduate House and look forward to assisting them further with their enquiries and a successful graduate pathway.

Conference Delegate Accommodation Options

College accommodation outside the academic year, either late November to December, or in the early part of the year before semester begins.

If you are a conference organiser, please recommend The Graduate Union as a college stay that can cater for various budgets - from student to professorial. To avoid disappointment, advise delegates to book well in advance. We must give preference to Members, so also recommend that delegates become members (it’s affordable).

Delegates are eligible for membership if they have graduated from any university in the world. The benefits of membership include much lower college accommodation and meal rates, a maximum stay of over seven nights, as well as the benefits shown on page 15.

We would like to thank the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (ACHPER). A number of their delegates have already booked our college accommodation for the 28th ACHPER International Conference on Health and Physical Education: A Defining Time. This international forum is being hosted at both The University of Melbourne and Monash University from the 27th to 29th November, 2013.

Seen at Graduate House Barry Dance, seated front left, organised a Senior Military Officers luncheon in July. This formal luncheon is held once a year but members of the group meet regularly here at Graduate House for other occasions and to catch up.

The officers are seen here in the Johnston Library having just enjoyed a sumptuous meal of salmon and salad with nice wine.

It was in the early eighties that Anthony Nicholls last stayed at Graduate House. His earlier residency was in 1969 prior to his marriage after which he and Julia (right) lived round the corner at 209 Grattan Street, one of four houses then owned by the Graduate Union, while he completed a PhD from the Faculty of Science, School of Botany. He worked with CSIRO from mid-1972 until his retirement in 2005.

He and Julia enjoyed the facilities of the greatly expanded Graduate House on a recent visit from interstate to the National Gallery of Victoria’s Monet’s Garden exhibition, lunching with Barbara Funder (Thank you Barbara).

We welcomed Dr Bruna Ann Marcella Galli and Mr Galli to the dining room in August.

Dr Galli is a Life Member, having joined the Association of Graduates in 1970. The Gallis live closeby, in Carlton, and mentioned the convenience of Graduate House as it is a short walk for a good meal.

Life Member Dr John Niall was also seen in our dining room in August.

Dr Niall joined the Association of Graduates in 1980 and is seen here enjoying a complimentary birthday meal with Mrs Niall.

We hope that you had a wonderful meal and birthday celebration and look forward to seeing you both on your next visit.

Reciprocal Association St James’s Hotel and Club Follow in the footsteps of film stars, celebrities, authors and diplomats and stay at the St. James’s Hotel and Club. We recommend staying at this club so that you can discover for yourself why they love the location and the experience, and so that can reassure yourself that the spelling is correct!

First the location at 7-8 Park Place. This five-star hotel is in a quiet cul-de-sac just around the corner from Mayfair, Buckingham Palace, St. James’s Palace, the exclusive shops of Jermyn Street, the Burlington Arcade, Bond Street, The Royal Academy of Arts and the theatres and night life of the West End. The Club was founded in 1857 as an exclusive gentleman’s club in Piccadilly. Times and economic conditions changed and in the early seventies, financial difficulties led to closure as St. James’s Club and operations solely as a hotel.
