APPLIED RESEARCH SEMINAR EXPLORE CHALLENGES IN YOUR SECTOR, WORK WITH PROMISING RESEARCHERS AT THE GRADUATE INSTITUTE

Each year students from the Graduate Institute’s interdisciplinary master programmes in international affairs and development studies carry out, as part of their curricula, research projects worth 9ECTS for international and non-governmental organisations, public institutions and the private sector. Organisations benefit from the Applied Research Seminars (ARS) by engaging students from a leading academic institution to carry out research projects such as desk studies, interviews, data collection and analysis on topics relevant to their sector. The results of the Applied Research Seminar are delivered to the organisations by the Institute’s students through reports and presentations. By helping students gain hands-on experience working in partnership with them on real world projects, organisations can also tap into the Graduate Institute’s talent pool for recruitment and expertise. The Institute’s students come from over 100 different countries. More than 70% speak three languages or more and the majority have international

work experience. Our rigorous selection process ensures that they are some of the most promising minds from their countries. Our study programmes prepare them to work on the world’s major challenges. Groups of two to four second year Master students work together on a given research topic elaborated with the partner organisation and the Graduate Institute’s faculty. Research starts in spring and is finalised in December. The groups receive guidance and supervision by Graduate Institute faculty on methodology and content. Partners are expected to interact with the groups on a regular basis and meet them at least three times. The ARS does not require any financial participation but partners would be expected to pay for any non-discretionary expenses such as long-distance travel. GRADUATE SUCCESS STORIES ANOUK CHEVALIER PLANTE, Master in International Economics, 2014 Risk Analyst, Risk Management Department The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria

How did you start your career? Before joining The Global Fund Risk Management Department as a Risk Analyst in October 2014, I worked as a research assistant for the Spanish AIDS Society and gained expertise in mother-tochild HIV transmission in resource-limited settings. To back up my career plans in global health, I completed a bachelor’s degree in International Development and Political Science at McGill University. I continued with a Master’s degree in International Economics at the Graduate Institute, which led me to intern with different international institutions such as the World Health Organisation, the International AIDS Society and The Global Fund. I am currently completing an advanced certificate in Public Health from New York University.

Why did you choose to study at the Graduate Institute? I chose to study at the Graduate Institute as I was looking for an academic environment that would offer me both the expertise and exposure required to research useful and sustainable solutions to global development issues. Why did you choose a career at The Global Fund? I chose a career at The Global Fund because I knew it is an institution that connects people both intellectually and emotionally. The Global Fund offers a work environment that allows me to utilise my analytical skills while also keeping in touch with current developments in the academic world to find efficient ways to erode inequalities in access to health.

| 15 “The Institute (…) gave us exposure to international actors with whom I now interact on a day to day basis”.

In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career at The Global Fund? A successful career at The Global Fund can be summarised into a set of values: > integrity to be transparent in the work we carry out, learn from our mistakes and continuously improve > innovation to find creative solutions and increase our impact and its sustainability > effectiveness to harvest our expertise to better collaborate and deliver more effectively towards a common goal

Did the Graduate Institute prepare you well? The Institute and its faculty prepared me well by teaching us useful methodologies which helped in further developing my quantitative skills. Moreover it gave us exposure to international actors with whom I now interact on a day to day basis. How did you benefit from your position at The Global Fund? As a Risk Analyst at The Global Fund, I gained exposure to quality data and was offered the opportunity to deepen my understanding of the three diseases through field visits, trainings and conferences.

| FABIAN GRASS, Master in International Relations, 2008 Diplomatic AttachĂŠ Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs

How did you start your career after the Graduate Institute? I started my job as a Research Assistant for the Director of the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP), the week following my graduation in 2008. I worked at GCSP for three years and benefited immensely from my academic specialisation in International Security Studies at the Graduate Institute. I spent 2011 with the Swiss Delegation to the Conference on Disarmament, before moving to Vienna for four years as a Swiss secondee at the Conflict Prevention Centre (OSCE) until 2015, working on military confidence and security building measures. My current training as a Swiss diplomat started in April 2015. Since September 2015 I have been based at the Swiss Embassy in Ottawa. Why did you choose to study at the Graduate Institute? I was very much interested in the field of political science, and wanted to acquire a global perspective. After having consulted

different university rankings, I understood that the Graduate Institute was the best place in Switzerland to pursue such studies. In order to improve my French, I did my military training in Fribourg and then worked for eight months at the Geneva Centre for Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF), before starting my university course in 2004. Why did you choose a career in diplomacy? The field of diplomacy offers an exciting career and enriching experiences around the world. What fascinates me the most is the vastness of work opportunities, as well as the many different specialisations. At the same time core skills are needed, no matter what you do in this business, such as open mindedness, a willingness to deepen your knowledge about any subject, and a political flair that is above average.

| 17 “Working for the Swiss diplomatic service is a privilege.

In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career in diplomacy? In the end, I feel that it really boils down to personality. You can know everything, but if you cannot sell it, you’ll have a problem. How did your experience at the Institute prepare you for this position? It prepared me by providing me with a global perspective and a multi-disciplinary approach combining political science, economics, history and law. The most valuable skills I learnt come from my time doing internships and at Model United Nations, together with a simulation of UN negotiations, like the Geneva International Model United Nations (GIMUN). I can recommend such an experience to everybody interested in the world of international affairs.

What advantages did the Institute give you from an intellectual point of view? The multi-disciplinary lens is an advantage that I am still benefiting from today, and will continue to for a long time. In what ways have you benefitted from the diplomatic sector? Working for the Swiss diplomatic service is a privilege. It can take you to a lot of places, endow you with great responsibilities you might not have elsewhere, and offer you a wide array of possible specialisations. I am learning a lot during my current training, which provides me with key tools to perform as a diplomat.

| ALEXIS KRIKORIAN, Master in International History, 1999 Senior Partnership Manager Amnesty International

| ANDREA THIEL, Master in Development Studies, 2012 Consultant McKinsey & Company

How did you start your career? Having worked for the World Health Organisation and the German Development Service in a gap year before starting the Master in Development Studies programme, I decided to use the summer break between the two master years to get to know consulting as a working environment. After a 10 week internship with McKinsey & Company, during which I had the chance to work on two different projects with experienced consultants, I received an offer to return after finishing my degree, which I did in the autumn of 2012. Why did you choose to study at the Graduate Institute? What convinced me to choose the Graduate Institute was the fact that I would be able to combine classes in very different fields, some of which I had had no previous exposure to (e.g., anthropology), and some which had already been part of my undergraduate programmes (e.g. law, policy). Other important factors in the decision were the faculty as well as the fact that the programme was bilingual and situated in Geneva, with its international community and organisations within reach.

Why did you choose a career at McKinsey & Company? During my internship, I was fascinated by the number of different areas and challenges I could work in as a consultant, including the more “typical” business strategy projects, which, still, are never quite “typical” as the sectors and areas are so diverse, and opportunities to work in the public and social sector. Beyond the content, the high level of motivation and dedication I recognised in my colleagues convinced me that this was the working environment in which I wanted to start my career. In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career at McKinsey & Company? I think one of the most important qualities is the dedication to working on complex issues in short time frames, along with the will and ability to work together in close collaboration with a diverse team. It takes enthusiasm and tenacity, and one needs to be prepared to frequently change perspective and environment.

| 21 “What convinced me to choose the Graduate Institute (…) were the faculty as well as the fact that the programme was bilingual and situated in Geneva, with its international community and organisations within reach”.

How did your experience at the Institute prepare you for this position? An important part of what I do could be referred to as “problem solving“, identifying solutions to complex challenges using multiple sources and perspectives. Since the first step towards this is always to understand the problem in its whole, and identify its roots, it takes the ability to look at the same issue from different points of view. The diversity of (intellectual) experiences and the diverse and international environment in which the Master in Development Studies programme was taught helped me to become better at doing exactly that.

How have you benefitted from your position at McKinsey & Company? The most important benefit in terms of personal and professional development has been getting to know a very fast and thorough approach to problem solving. This, in combination with what I have learned from colleagues and outside experts, has allowed me to get to know a large number of topics and areas. During my work, I’ve been able to work with a large number of different organisations in different areas and get to know their environments, challenges and approaches, which I found very interesting. Also, I am currently taking a sabbatical supported by my employer to pursue a PhD. Earning an additional (academic) qualification is widespread and actively encouraged at McKinsey & Company.
