WELCOME TO CONNEXION 2011! This 8 th edition of our yearly Careers Forum opens with a record number of employers drawn from the public and private sectors alike. This shows that the profiles of students who will soon be completing their studies at the Institute and our young graduates continue to meet the diverse expectations of the global workplace. This is not surprising. Studying at the Graduate Institute has become more and more competitive every year and the chosen few come with solid credentials at the start: three or more languages, previous international professional experience and undergraduate studies from the world’s finest schools. At the Institute they are prepared for tomorrow’s world by looking at global issues in an interdisciplinary manner. As world events unfold they are taught to analyse the political, economic, legal and historical factors underpinning them. Their formal education is complemented by regular conferences and seminars at the Institute featuring world experts in their fields and they benefit from the immense activity in International Geneva.

Many of the organisations that have chosen to participate in Connexion 2011 are long-standing partners. A good part of their representatives have studied or lectured within our walls, hired our students or simply participated in our series of multistakeholder events. They have learned that the Institute is a forum for forward-looking reflection and that the young men and women who study here will inherit our values: excellence, independence, engagement and diversity. These will enable them to succeed in the responsibilities given to them by any future employer. Our students and partner organisations have an important point in common: they come from all over the world and share a deep belief that global challenges need global solutions. The Institute is here to help you make the right match.

RECENT GRADUATES’ SUCCESS STORIES

* Présentation KPMG : vendredi 25 mars à 12h15, salle S1 ** Présentation UBS AG : mercredi 23 mars à 14h15, salle S1

Malek Dahmani Graduate Lombard Odier*

* Présentation Lombard Odier : jeudi 24 mars à 12h15, salle S1 ** Présentation Symbiotics SA : jeudi 24 mars à 13h15, salle S1

Recent graduates’ success stories

Benjamin Kong Intern North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)*

How did you start your career? My bachelor’s degree was in international economics and I started my international relations career in Washington, DC as a trade analyst, working on antidumping cases covering imports into the United States. Some of the methodologies and procedures used in our work were related to decisions made at the WTO. Later on, my specialisation evolved when I took a new position in the US Department of State regulating defence-related exports. This role allowed me to develop more of my skills analysing and interpreting policy. After a period of time, I decided to take a master’s degree in international affairs to build on my first economics degree. Why did you choose to study at the Graduate Institute? The Graduate Institute’s location in Geneva, a centre for international organisations and NGOs, was the perfect place for me to study international affairs in a multilateral context. The remarkable internationalism of the faculty and student body, as well as the city of Geneva, have had a profound influence on making me into a more global thinker.

Did you work during your studies in Geneva? Yes, I completed internships at the UN Conference for Trade and Development (UNCTAD)** and the Graduate Institute’s Career Services. At UNCTAD, I researched foreign direct investment in numerous economic sectors of South East Asia and the investment activities of sovereign wealth funds in the agricultural sector. While working in Career Services, I helped organise the Careers Forum and carried out other activities promoting students and alumni with multinational companies. Why did you choose an experience at NATO? Having worked before in regulating US defence exports, I was interested in gaining experience in the multinational application of those defence capabilities. Being at NATO would also give me the opportunity to work in a smaller international organisation (28 members) within a more focussed field of international policy. * Presentation by NATO: Friday, 25 March at 10:15, room S1 ** Presentation by UNCTAD: Friday, 25 March at 15:15, room S4

Recent graduates’ success stories

In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career at NATO? To be successful at NATO, the two most important skills are communication and network-building. You will work daily with diplomats, civil servants in defence ministries, military officers and policy professionals. As in other organisations, but especially international ones, success requires being able to work with people from different professional backgrounds and nationalities. Successful communication requires listening and those who are good at listening and understanding their counterparts can build strong networks. Did the Graduate Institute prepare you well? Yes, particularly in terms of my communication and negotiation skills. At the Graduate Institute, I appreciated very much the small yet international classes and the strong emphasis on engaging with professors and fellow students.

| 29

What advantage did the Institute give you from an intellectual point of view? The most valuable skills I gained from my Graduate Institute studies are two-fold. At the first level is the ability to study a matter and take a well-reasoned position on it within the wider picture, and then to explain my position in a clear, lucid manner. The second is the capability to understand different positions on the same matter – even different schools of thought – and to find a way to negotiate. How did you benefit from your position at NATO? My time at NATO showed me that the success of an initiative depends as much on the implementation as on the (sometimes long) negotiation of a decision. Implementation requires somewhat different competences compared with those used in negotiating decisions, including the skills to manage people and projects. Most of these skills can be acquired through experience and training. For me, I decided to do it in an accelerated form through a Master in Business Administration degree from Rotterdam School of Management in the Netherlands.

Sébastien Delahaye Young Professional African Development Bank (AfDB)*

How did you start your career? I first studied accounting at the University of Lyon. As I was interested in corporate management, I joined a business school from which I obtained a master’s degree. As I was interested in meeting other cultures and in “helping” disadvantaged communities, I decided to find a way of making my skills in management match the needs of NGOs. This is why I first applied to the Graduate Institute in 2002, but my application was not selected. In fact, a few years of professional experience were requested at that time, which I was obviously missing. Nevertheless, I made it an objective to get involved at the Institute. I was offered a two year voluntary contract as an administration and finance officer for a local NGO established in the south of Haïti. Involved with craft workers, donors and government officials or in the dissemination of techniques to farmers, I got a broad view of the different actors involved and an in-depth understanding of the challenges they were facing. At the end * Presentation by AfDB: Friday 1 April, 14:30, room Abi-Saab

of that period, I evaluated that I needed to take some distance from the field and applied again to the Graduate Institute. Why did you choose to study at the Graduate Institute? This choice was confirmed by the critical and interdisciplinary perspective the degree was offering. I had been extensively involved in agriculture and appropriate technology development, therefore, I was already highly motivated to undertake the courses related to sustainable development and global ecology. After spending three years in Haiti, it was time for me to look back from my field work and think about its essence. I took the degree as a path which would enable me to go into theoretical details, to acquire some additional tools and to consolidate my future career. Which memory of your studies stands out the most? I have many memorable souvenirs from my time at the Graduate Institute. One of the most important is related to the group we set up to facilitate the learning and understanding of all texts and theories we had to assimilate in such a short period.

Recent graduates’ success stories

This group was key to successfully completing my studies as I was lacking a social science background. I keep in mind too the enthusiasm of the “ecology team including Profs. Grinevald and Steppacher, the thoroughness of Profs. SchulteTenckoff, Bocco and Servet. I can say now that my stay at the Institute has changed the way I looked at things. Why did you choose a career at the AfDB? After experiences in NGOs, I wanted to see what it was like on the funding side. Another reason was my wish to work more closely with governments and especially African countries. I also wanted to work in an organisation that would facilitate moving between practice and theory, which the AfDB enables through project work and economic and sector work. Finally, I trusted that joining the AfDB through the Young Professionals Programme would give me the unique opportunity of discovering such an organisation while being fully involved in its operations and activities. A Young Professional is given a three-year contract during which he undertakes three rotations in different departments before being able to apply for a regular position. This is an incredibly rich professional experience.

| 31

In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career at the AfDB? Apart from being dedicated to your work, the ability to evolve in a multicultural environment is key. Day to day work is done with people from different countries, different cultures and backgrounds. Ability to communicate in English and French is also essential as both languages are official. Lastly, analytical skills, a practical approach to problem solving and proposing realistic solutions are essential qualities to undertake assignments. Did the Graduate Institute prepare you well? Yes, it has definitely provided me with the opportunity to develop some essential skills and tools to cope with the challenges one can face when working on development issues in a multicultural environment. Methodology classes and the privileged interdisciplinary perspective have been of considerable help for the work I am doing. I am always involved in analysing multi variables problems for which there is not one single solution. Finally, group work as well as standards required for oral and written presentations have prepared me to deliver high-quality work to different stakeholders.
