Abstract
This paper explores the relationship between dance and architecture, focusing on a comparison between two contrasting forms of movement: classical ballet and breakdance. Dance, like architecture, is an art of space; through the body, rhythm, and movement, space is produced or redefined around us. Ballet, as a classical dance form, embodies the principles of classical architecture: symmetry, balance, geometry, and hierarchy. Its space is strictly structured, with clear boundaries and predetermined directions of movement. Every gesture follows spatial rules, much like columns in a temple. The upright posture, balance, and pursuit of an ideal evoke an architecture of measure and proportion. In contrast, breakdance emerges in the open, unpredictable space of the city—on sidewalks and in public squares—where architecture becomes a living field of action. Here, the dancer redefines their limits with every spin or fall. With its explosive and asymmetrical movements, breakdance recalls deconstructivist architecture. Where ballet seeks order and measure, breakdance celebrates the energy of the moment and the freedom of the body to generate space and meaning. Through this comparison, the paper highlights how the body functions as an “architect of space,” at times disciplined and at others free, and how different forms of dance reflect different perceptions of space.
