Founded in 1920, Graded - The American School of São Paulo is an independent, coeducational, nonsectarian, nonprofit American day school serving an international community of approximately 1320 preprimary through grade 12 students.

Our faculty strives to produce graduates who are clear communicators, critical thinkers, self-motivated learners, and responsible risk-takers. By the time students graduate, they are prepared to enter the global community as true leaders.

Graded is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and the Secretaria de Educação do Estado de São Paulo (SEDUC-SP).

Students earn an American high school diploma upon graduation and have the option of pursuing the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma and/or a Brazilian diploma.

ACADEMICS

LOWER SCHOOL Graded’s lower school is a lively community of teachers and learners. Pre-primary students interact in mixed-age Montessori classrooms, gaining confidence and independence through self-directed learning. Dedicated faculty empower students in grades 1-5 to take ownership of their learning and to reflect upon their goals. During these years, students develop foundational academic skills while immersing themselves in STEM, Portuguese, art, music, and physical education. Social-emotional development is also infused in all learning environments.

MIDDLE SCHOOL The middle school experience at Graded is engaging, joyful, and designed to respond to the unique developmental needs of adolescents.

Students explore newfound independence while learning to think critically and confidently express their ideas. Our extensive elective and extracurricular offerings balance academics with arts, service learning, and athletics. Community Time, designed with a focus on the unique needs of middle school students, incorporates assemblies, advisory classes, and activities.

This program enables students to hone social skills and explore interests beyond the curriculum.

HIGH SCHOOL Graded’s rigorous high school academic program prepares students for undergraduate study at the world’s top colleges and universities. The majority of our graduates earn three diplomas – American, Brazilian, and International Baccalaureate (IB). They balance a rich program of extracurricular activities, assume leadership roles, and engage in communitybased projects.

GRADED LEARNING LAB: ADVANCING EDUCATION BEYOND BOUNDARIES Established in 2019 and founded on our belief that learning has no bounds, the Graded Learning Lab is a catalyst for institutional learning at Graded. The Lab houses two distinct yet related divisions. It is home to the school's Teaching and Learning and Student Growth and Performance departments.

As a nexus for professional growth, 6

collaboration, consulting, design thinking, and prototyping, the Graded Learning Lab's overarching objective is to elevate teaching and learning at Graded. Currently, Learning Lab team members are implementing a sustained professional learning experience on deeper learning for all Graded faculty.

SCIENCE OF LEARNING As an institution of learning, we are focused on ensuring that all of our students engage in experiences we characterize as “deep, enduring, and transferable.” We are committed to helping learners develop a depth of understanding and a portable skillset that will matter to them years from now. Central to our success in this area is the application of cognitive science principles in all of our classrooms. External partnerships and professional learning for faculty support this work.

SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING Having a strong sense of belonging, purpose, and motivation is essential to the success of each of our students, faculty, and staff members. Activities such as mentoring, advisory classes, the Student Ambassador Program, guidance counseling, and an employee wellness program are part of the day-to-day work at Graded that helps create an environment in which all students and employees can thrive.

ACTIVE LEARNING Learning through experience is an integral part of Graded’s curriculum. Lower school students learn about pollination at a bee farm and about imports and exports at the Port of Santos. Each year, upper school students travel throughout Brazil to engage with nature, step outside of their comfort zones, and immerse themselves in authentic, local communities.

ATHLETICS Athletics play a pivotal role in preparing our students for the future, promoting their physical and emotional well-being, instilling confidence, and nurturing selfdiscipline. All of our students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of sports, including basketball, cheer, futsal, soccer, softball, swimming, volleyball, tennis, and track and field.

ARTS At Graded, we offer an abundance of visual and performing arts courses.

The 7900-square-meter Lemann-Tully Arts Center is a real showstopper, boasting multiple spaces, including a black box theater, ceramics studio, photography lab, and music practice rooms.

SERVICE The academic, social, and emotional benefits of service learning are immeasurable. By giving back to their communities, students become aware and responsible members of society. Graded’s well-established Service Learning Program strives to develop thoughtful, compassionate, and engaged global citizens.

As a Graded faculty member, you will be living in São Paulo, Brazil’s financial powerhouse and cultural mecca. The city, also known as “Sampa,” is home to approximately 11.5 million people and some of the world’s largest diasporas. São Paulo prides itself on its cultural diversity, eclectic food scene, world-class museums, and dizzying nightlife. Graded faculty and staff live in a range of neighborhoods. Exotic Brazil, the world’s fifth-largest country, is renowned for its vibrance and abundant biodiversity. Brazilians are warm and open people who proudly celebrate their African, European, Asian, and Middle Eastern heritage.

Home to beautiful beaches, Carnaval, capoeira, bossa nova, samba, and the world’s most ardent soccer fans, Brazil offers something for everyone.

TRAVEL OPPORTUNITIES Travel opportunities abound throughout Latin America. Brazil, with its vast and diverse territory, is home to the Amazon rainforest, the Pantanal wetlands, magnificent Iguaçu Falls, as well as spectacular beaches and mountains.

Brazil’s cities captivate even the most seasoned traveler. Breathtaking Rio de Janeiro, nestled between golden beaches and verdant peaks, boasts World Heritage Site status. In Salvador, colonial architecture spills down cobblestone streets while the rhythms of capoeira resound.

Many Latin American destinations are only a plane ride away. Explore Machu Picchu, the Uyuni Salt Flats, and Patagonia. Tango in Buenos Aires and meander the streets of Cartagena. As South America’s major travel hub, São Paulo is the perfect starting point to explore the continent.
