MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD This has been an exciting year for the Board and the entire Graded community. Your generosity has a made a profound impact on the educational experiences of all students and enabled us to move forward with three strategic initiatives as part of the Centennial Plan.

First, Graded received the largest gift in the school’s history from the Lemann Foundation to launch the Graded Scholar Program.

This program will develop global leaders among economically disadvantaged gifted Brazilian students by giving them access to a Graded education. This initiative will be transformative for the school by raising the bar among all students and inspiring excellence throughout our community. Second, the Garfinkel Family made a significant gift to launch the Excellence in Teaching Endowment to ensure that Graded can recruit, develop, and retain the best teachers in the world.

It is only with full community participation that we can reach our goals and continue to make Graded even better each year. This year, over 400 parents, alumni, faculty and staff, foundations, and corporations committed nearly R$9 million towards Leadership Giving and the Graded Fund. This level of support is an incredible accomplishment for our community, and has made a significant impact on providing exceptional learning experiences for all students.

I would also like to thank my colleagues and fellow board members for their extraordinary dedication and commitment this year.

Your hard work as volunteers is truly inspiring. Thank you outgoing board members: Eduardo Estrada who served for nearly four years, and Paul Fama who served for one year. Welcome new 13-14 board members: Luiz Galeazzi, Paige Geiger, and Fabio Coelho.

MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT Graded School continues to thrive. After 94 years since its founding, the school continues to be considered one of the best international schools in the world with an excellent global reputation. This legacy, however, is not achieved easily. The Board and Leadership Team have worked hard this year to ensure that Graded continues to excel on all fronts- academic excellence anchored in rigorous curriculum and world-class teaching, operational efficiency focused on maximizing educational resources, and strategic planning for the future as highlighted by the school’s Centennial Plan.

But, these accomplishments and opportunities are only realized through the generous support of our parents, alumni, faculty, staff, corporate partners, and community foundations whose gifts enable the school to reach new levels of excellence. Last year, the 201314 school year, emphasized the school’s focus on community engagement and stakeholder involvement, always with the school’s mission as a centerpiece. Leadership donors strategically invested nearly R$8 million in new commitments last school year, with the largest gift in Graded’s history being secured to ignite an expanded merit-based scholarship program for low-income students.

Additional leadership gifts were specifically earmarked for retaining high-quality teachers at Graded. And the school used other investments to complete the first phase of its ambitious campus renovation, the Lower School playground and gymnasiums. In addition, nearly 400 individuals and organizations who participated in the school’s annual fund program, the Graded Fund, provided R$1,178,789 in much needed support for priority projects in the areas of academics, fine arts, athletics, and community service- all critically important areas within the Graded Experience.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS Graded is governed by a self-perpetuating board, whose twelve members are appointed for up to four two-year terms. The Board was first established in 1931 and continues to set the school’s fiduciary policies, annual budget, and fundraising goals based on input from the Superintendent and Learning Leadership Team. The Board stewards the school’s financial resources to provide for current needs, while at the same time protecting and enhancing the endowment for the benefit of the school’s future. The Board is also responsible for hiring and evaluating the Superintendent.

NEW DIRECTORS FABIO COELHO is the President of Google Brazil. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, an MBA from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), and a Certificate in Business Administration from Harvard University. Fabio’s previous executive positions include VP of Marketing for Citibank Brazil, VP of Marketing for BellSouth International and President of IG (Internet Group do Brasil). He also serves as the Chairman of Board of IAB Brazil (Interactive Advertising Bureau). He was recently voted CEO of the Year by Exame Info magazine. Fabio and his wife Mafe have two daughters attending Graded.

LUIZ GALEAZZI is the Managing Director at Galeazzi & Associates (G&A) and has over 15 years of project leadership experience in high-value management consulting in a wide range of industries in Brazil and abroad. Luiz is a founding member of the Turnaround Management Association (TMA) Brazil and a member of the International Insolvency Institute (III). He holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV) and also serves as a board member for Cremer and Gama Investments. Luiz is a second-generation alumnus and has three daughters in the Lower School.

PAIGE GEIGER is the Executive Administrative Director for the Montessori Education Center of São Paulo. As former Lower School Principal at Graded (1995-2012) Paige has worked with administrators, parents, teachers and students on the enhancement of school-wide goals and objectives focused on Graded’s mission. She also served as an elementary teacher and early childhood leader from 1975 to 1993 at Graded. Paige received her bachelor’s degree from Penn State University, her masters from Boston State College, and an early childhood specialization from the American Montessori Society.

MESSAGE FROM THE TREASURER Graded completed another year of financial stability with a balanced budget, operating reserves increasing by 21%, capital reserves by 17%, and investment return on endowments increasing by 16%. With two new significant gifts, our combined endowments ended with the highest year-end balance in the school’s history at R$11,877,355.88. Additionally, another successful year of admission resulted in the school being at full capacity.

We continue to enhance our campus. In February 2014, we completed Phase 1 of the Graded Campus Project which included a complete renovation of the lower school playgrounds and gyms. The Board also approved to move forward with Phase 2 of the Campus Project, which includes new athletic fields, a running track, a redesigned main entrance adjacent to secure underground parking, and a renovated Student Center. We expect to break ground for this phase by the end of 2014.

Thank you for your support and dedication this year. As an alumnus, current parent, and board member, I am extremely proud to be part of this special community and I look forward to another exciting year ahead.

HISTORY

SINCE OPENING its doors 94 years ago, Graded has relied on the support and generosity of its community to operate and grow. The school was founded in 1920 when a group of American Chamber of Commerce members rented space and funded construction of a small school that would prepare their children for American schools and universities. Over the next decade, Graded became an important resource for the American/Brazilian community in SĂŁo Paulo. Then, in the mid-1930s, the American Chamber of Commerce raised money from corporate partners to construct an even larger building on school-owned land close to Avenida Paulista. Throughout the 1950s, the industrial boom created pressure to expand even more and Graded conducted fundraising campaigns to purchase land and begin construction of a new school in Morumbi.

The current campus opened in 1961 with 31 classrooms, a library, cafeteria, auditorium with 500 seats, and an infirmary. Since then, fundraising has continued with significant help from parents, alumni, the PTA, and corporations to build new structures that include gyms, classrooms, offices, Optimal Learning Center, upper school library, seats in the auditorium, and the Lemann-Tully Arts Center. In addition, through generous leadership gifts in 2000, the school created scholarship and professional development endowment funds. Graded is thankful for the community’s log-standing commitment over the years and looks forward to continued support as we approach our 100th anniversary.

INSTITUTIONAL HIGHLIGHTS SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN The School Improvement Plan, created as part of the 2013 AdvancED accreditation process, was developed using comprehensive data gathered from all stakeholder groups and sound research-based current strategies and practices. The School Improvement Team- including members of the Leadership Learning Team, faculty, parents, and Board - met several times last year to monitor progress and ensure that goals were met. Anchored in the school’s mission and core values, the School’s Improvement Plan focuses on teaching and learning.

Student success at Graded will reflect its mission and core values.

Graded student support strategies and systems will serve the diverse needs of learners in meeting the mission and core values of the school.

Graded organizational structures will effectively support staff and students in meeting the outcomes of student success.

Results from the plan include: reviewing the school’s framework on arts, academics, athletics/activities, and community service; refining current curriculum review processes; revising grading and reporting structures; hiring a Graded Scholar Program Coordinator and Student Support Services Coordinator; aligning student support services across all divisions; creating clear criteria for facilities to meet the needs of the 21st century learner; determining needs for a transparent community-wide communication plan; and, developing key performance indicators to monitor evidence of success.

Graded will continue to work on the Student Improvement Plan through 2016.

LEARNING LEADERSHIP TEAM The Learning Leadership Team (LLT) is the group of academic and operational administrators at Graded whose collective aim is to advocate for the mission of the school. COLLEGE ACCEPTANCES

The members of the Class of 2014 who applied to colleges and universities outside of Brazil considered a wide range of schools based on academic programs, location, public vs. private, size, and a variety of other criteria. In total, students were accepted to 148 schools outside of Brazil. Throughout the application process, each individual student searched for the school that would best match his/her future plans. ALUMNI HIGHLIGHTS The alumni community continues to strengthen its network. The official Graded Alumni Facebook and Twitter accounts were launched in September 2013 and within three months, we had over 1,000 former Graded students connected with alumni from all over the world. This year’s events included The Annual Graded Alumni Reunion, ‘03 and ‘93 milestone reunions, a career day for high school students, and casual get-togethers. We look forward to even more exciting events as Graded celebrates its 95th anniversary next year!

ALUMNI HIGHLIGHTS SÃO PAULO ALUMNI REUNION AT BOS BBQ Over 100 alumni and friends attended the Graded Alumni Reunion at Bos BBQ on November 21, 2013. Alumni from the classes of 1970 - 2013 celebrated their friendships and memories from Graded. Roberto Sallouti ‘90 and Roberta Paes de Almeida ‘91 presented a special plaque to Ney Viera, former high school athletics director, physical education teacher, and beloved coach for his 32 years of service at Graded.

Giving to Graded Over the last 94 years, Graded has been recognized as an educational leader that inspires excellence, fosters intercultural competence, and empowers engaged, ethical citizens. Now, as the school plans for the future, it must attract new financial resources to invest in long-term initiatives and educational enhancements each year. In 2011, Graded launched its Giving to Graded program and since then has attracted over 400 donors that have committed nearly R$23 million towards this effort.

This is an incredible accomplishment for our community. All stakeholders- parents, alumni, faculty/staff, foundations, and corporations- have participated in this effort. Donors have made gifts through Leadership Giving that invests in the future through the Centennial Plan, and the Graded Fund that enhances learning experiences each year.

GIVING THAT

INVESTS IN THE FUTURE As Graded approaches its 100th anniversary, it has embarked on an ambitious plan to invest in strategic priorities that honor the school’s history, safeguard its position as one of the best in the world, and advance its legacy. Strategic priority areas include: the Excellence in Teaching Initiative, Graded Scholar Program, and Graded Campus Project. This is an extraordinary time for our school and a tremendous opportunity for all stakeholders to get involved to impact the entire Graded community for today and tomorrow.

EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING INITIATIVE A top priority for the Centennial Plan is to improve student learning through recruiting, developing and retaining the best teachers in the world. Since opening its doors in 1920, Graded has attracted top educators seeking a community that is inspiring and intellectually challenging. But now, due to the rising costs of living in São Paulo, Graded must secure new financial resources to support the needs of its students and their teachers. In 2014, the Garfinkel Family made a significant gift to launch the Excellence in Teaching Initiative to ensure that Graded continues to be a premier educational resource for many years to come.

GRADED SCHOLAR PROGRAM

GRADED CAMPUS PROJECT

A pillar of the Centennial Plan is to expand the meritbased scholarship program to increase diversity and raise intercultural awareness throughout the community. In May 2014, Jorge Paulo Lemann and the Lemann Foundation made a transformative gift to launch the new Graded Scholar Program to develop global leaders among economicallydisadvantaged gifted Brazilian students. These students will serve as role models, mentors, and contribute to Graded and their own communities in meaningful ways. As a result, the Graded Scholar Program will inspire excellence among all students.

A top priority for the future, the Graded Campus Project ensures the school can offer students the very best learning environment for many years to come. Graded, in partnership with Zanettini Arquitetura Planejamento and Hochtief do Brasil, has created a comprehensive facility plan to expand the campus and renovate aging infrastructure. Phase 1 was completed in February 2014 and included the Lower School Playgrounds and Gyms. Phase 2 will begin by the end of 2014 and include the Athletics Fields, Main Entrance/Parking Complex and the Student Center. Phases 3-5 will include the Pre-School and 1st Grade Building, Cafeteria, Gyms and Welcome Center.

CENTENNIAL CAMPAIGN EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE The Centennial Campaign Executive Committee (CCEC) hosted its inaugural meeting in October 2013 at BTG Pactual to share ideas, identify future priorities, and discuss how to engage all stakeholders. GRADED FUND The Graded Fund, the school’s annual giving program, supports priority projects that enhance learning experiences each year and creates a sustainable culture of giving. This year was a great success as 367 donors made gifts totaling R$ 1.178.789, 18% above our initial goal of R$1.000.000. NEW READING SPACE: STORIES COME TO LIFE IN THE LOWER SCHOOL LIBRARY This past year, the Lower School Library storytelling space was renovated to create a more collaborative learning environment that best meets student literacy needs. This includes a change in layout, lighting and seating. Now, open, bright and comfortable, this special space encourages readers of any age to become book lovers for life.

Nada Collins, Lower School Principal ASSOCIATION OF AMERICAN SCHOOLS IN SOUTH AMERICA (AASSA) CONFERENCE: GRADED OFFERS WORLD CLASS TEACHER TRAINING Thanks to support from the Graded Fund, the entire Graded faculty attended the 2014 AASSA Conference: Redefining Relevance.

This important conference attracted nearly 1000 teachers from around South America to discuss how relevance is defined and how it relates to the needs and interests of students and society. Over 30 Graded teachers (and some students!) facilitated 20 highlyregarded workshops that included digital tools, assessment, student activism, metacognitive practice, global engagement and the International Baccalaureate. Participation in well-known conferences such as AASSA enable teachers to collaborate with colleagues and inspire them to reach new levels of excellence as professionals.

THE GRADED CHOIR FESTIVAL: TAKING ARTS TO THE NEXT LEVEL Graded’s award-winning choir had the unique opportunity to work with professional opera singers, Fabio Maciel, Claudia Cruz, Marcelo Vannucci, from the Teatro Municipal de São Paulo. The experienced and talented professionals prepared students for an exciting performance at the annual Thanksgiving celebration attended by hundreds of students, parents and teachers.

NEW WEB-SITE: REDESIGNED AND RESPONSIVE In an ongoing effort to improve community-wide communications, Graded invested in re-designing its web-site in order to strengthen its visual identity. The new web-site, to be launched in early 2015, will also enable optimum viewing on all devices. With an average of 1,200 devices connected to the campus network and a 600% increase in mobile traffic to the website this past year, Graded looks forward to an improved digital experience for the entire community.

NEW ATHLETIC UNIFORMS The athletics program is an essential part of a student’s learning experience at Graded.

With over 24 athletics teams competing each year, the Graded Fund has provided needed support to enhance the program each year. This year, it supported new volleyball uniforms for all junior varsity and varsity teams

NEW SOUND: STUDENT CENTER RENOVATION The Student Center provides a wonderful outdoor space for community events and performances. This year, the school invested in a state-of-the-art outdoor sound system that will enhance all events and provide more opportunities for music and drama presentations.

FOSTERS INTERCULTURAL COMPETENCE Graded students value diversity both within and outside the school’s walls. By engaging in numerous activities that promote awareness of other ways of life, students gain valuable real world experience. Donors were essential in providing support for the scholarship program as well as other projects that brought new ideas, thinkers and leaders to campus. This type of support ensures that Graded continues to be a community focused on being inclusive and open to perspectives from other cultures.

DISTINGUISHED SPEAKER SERIES TAYLOR MALI Students were thrilled and inspired by Taylor Mali’s weeklong visit in April 2014, sponsored by the PTA and Graded Fund.

Taylor Mali, one of the most well-known poets to have emerged from the poetry slam movement and one of the original poets to appear on the HBO series “Def Poetry Jam” is also a four-time National Poetry Slam champion. He has written three books, most recently “What Teachers Make: In Praise of the Greatest Job in the World”. Since 1998, over one thousand people have become teachers after reading or listening to Taylor Mali’s passionate poems about his experiences teaching middle school, high school, and college. During his visit to Graded, he taught classes in grades 6 - 10, encouraging students and teachers to take risks in their own creative thinking and take their writing to new levels of excellence.

He demanded a high level of precision with language. Students rose to this level and we have tried to maintain it since his visit.

GRADED FUND YUMI HEO Prominent author and illustrator of children’s literature, Yumi Heo, visited Graded in October 2013. During her visit, Yumi spoke to over 30 art classes in lower, middle, and high school and shared her artistic process. Students learned that mistakes may be opportunities to do something different and potentially better than what they had originally planned. Born and raised in Korea, and currently living in New York, Yumi also discussed the challenges of being an artist tied to two different cultures.

“I was so happy to attend this event with Yumi Heo. it was a great opportunity for the Graded community to learn more about the Korean culture, but also for our Korean Community to learn from this amazing author first hand.”

LIBBY STEPHENS Libby Stephens, author and consultant specializing in cross-cultural transitions and Third Culture Kids, visited Graded in October 2013. According to Stephens, Third Culture Kids have spent a significant part of their developmental years outside their parents’ culture. Sponsored by the PTA and Graded Fund, Libby hosted a series of talks and workshops for students, teachers, parents, and administrators. Numerous families attended her evening parent presentation, “Raising Third Culture KIds...Am I doing it right?” and learned techniques to help their children adapt in different worlds.

EMPOWERS ENGAGED, ETHICAL CITIZENS What makes Graded special is its commitment to educating students who are balanced, responsible, curious, and reflective risk takers. This year, donors helped support projects that raised student interests, initiated conversations on integrity and success in the 21st century, and promoted community service learning. Participation in activities like these fosters honesty and a personal commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of others.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM: INCREASING ACCESS Thanks to support from the Lemann Scholarship Endowment and Graded Fund, Graded provided scholarship support for a group of five students in grades 7-12. This includes providing tuition, tutoring, counseling, testing, and home internet connection. In addition, graduating seniors received vestibular course assistance as well as support to study abroad as part of the Post-Graduate Scholarship Program. The Scholarship Program provides exrtraordinary opportunities for talented low-income youth, and fosters diversity and balance in our community.

Leo Oliveira participated in the scholarship program at Graded for 13 years and graduated in May with a standing ovation from his class. He received a full scholarship to Skidmore College and plans to major in computer science and music.

GRADED FUND EDU CHANGE: DEVELOPING INNOVATIVE AND INTEGRATED SCIENCE PROGRAMS This past school year, Graded partnered with EduChange, an external service that provides educators with world-class and rigorous instructional tools. Through this collaboration, Graded designed a new integrated science program for 9th and 10th grades. This challenging and innovative program addresses large themes of study by integrating biology, chemistry and physics. Specifically, it emphasizes the importance of responsibility, curiosity and critical thinking through the use of scientific literacy and skills based labs.

In addition, the new program introduces ideas that students revisit and eventually master as the course spirals through the grades.

“Last year, The Edu-Change curriculum gave students incredible handson opportunities to learn about the local issue of hydropower. When we visited the Itaipu Dam in Foz de Iguaçu, the group discussed future plans for over 200 mini-dams in the Amazon Region and was inspired to take a critical look at the pros and cons of hydropower."

GIN VALVE REPLACEMENT: COMMITMENT TO WATER CONSERVATION. Global Issues Network (GIN) empowers students to address and propose solutions for complex social and environmental challenges in society. Student-led initiatives inspired through GIN involvement have made a significant impact in our community. In January 2014, GIN students - with Graded Fund support - oversaw the installation of 132 water economizing valves in all toilets on campus to conserve water and aid in São Paulo’s effort to be more mindful about water consumption.

A SHARED VISION FOR THE FUTURE LUNCHEON In August 2013, Fernanda Vidigal, Lorena Pinheiro Lima ‘91, Roberta Paes de Almeida ’91 and Veronica Sverner Arruda, with the Board Facility and Development Committee, hosted a special lunch to discuss A Shared Vision for Graded. It was a great opportunity for current parents to share ideas and feedback regarding the school’s strategic long-term initiatives.

CORPORATE PARTNERS PROGRAM BREAKFAST In November 2013, the United States Consul General in São Paulo, Mr. Dennis Hankins, hosted a breakfast meeting for corporate leaders to launch the Corporate Partner Program and give an update on the Centennial Plan. Hélio Magalhães, President of Citibank and member of the school’s Centennial Campaign Executive Committee, spoke about the importance of support from our Corporate Partners.

GIVING TO GRADED HIGHLIGHTS DONOR RECOGNITION COCKTAIL In May 2014, board member Carlos Hitoshi Castro and his wife Paula graciously hosted the Donor Recognition Cocktail at their home for nearly 200 parents, alumni, and friends. The event recognized Gold, Eagle Club, Century Club, Trustee’s Circle, as well as Leadership Donors. Roberto Sallouti ’90, President of the Board, and Lee Fertig, Superintendent, thanked guests for their generosity, spoke about the importance of their support, and gave an update on the Centennial Plan.

GIVING TO GRADED HIGHLIGHTS RIBBON CUTTING CELEBRATION: LOWER SCHOOL PLAYGROUNDS AND GYMS In April 2014, the entire Graded community celebrated the official opening of the newly renovated Lower School Playgrounds and Gyms- and launched the beginning of a multi-phase Graded Campus Project. Hosted by the PTA and other parent volunteers, over 600 people gathered for a “Picnic in the Park.” Renato Ochman, Chair- Facility and Development Committee, Dennis Hankins- U.S. Consul General in São Paulo, Renata Santucci- PTA President, Nada Collins- Lower School Principal, and Lee FertigSuperintendent, cut the ribbon to inaugurate the Project. Designed by Zanettini Architects with Barbieri & Gorski, the new, colorful and expansive playground was designed to meet all safety requirements and offer endless opportunities for play.
