In this historical novel, Adolph Hitler sends a U-boat carrying saboteurs to destroy key targets in New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania that support the war effort. Their destruction would also damage the morale of Americans who thus far have felt safe from the effects of the war in Europe. The book follows the adventures of five saboteurs landed on a New Jersey beach. Three were devoted Nazis. Two others lacked Nazi fever, and dealt with major conflicts in their loyalty to the cause. The leader's forbidden love affair with an American woman complicates their mission. Their illicit relationship eventually plays a major role in the book.Among targets considered for destruction included ships tied up at New York City piers, a critical installation of the Pennsylvania Railroad, an ore unloading facility in Cleveland, and an important bridge. The saboteurs use cold-blooded killing, courage, knowledge, and the art of seduction to attain their goals and avoid capture. A Nazi sympathizer in rural Northwest Pennsylvania assists by providing explosives for their mission.Meanwhile, the FBI and NYPD scramble to track them down, each seeking primary credit for their apprehension.
