FEATURED SPEAKER NORMAN STEINBERG ’61, History

L

awyer, writer, professor—and all-around funny guy. That’s Norman

Steinberg, Hollywood insider and Emmy Award-winning writer whose side-splitting work hits a nerve every time. For more than three decades, Mr. Steinberg has generated work that captures the zeitgeist of the moment. He has penned screenplays for numerous films, including Blazing Saddles, My Favorite Year, and Johnny Dangerously, and production rewrites for Mr. Mom and Wise Guys. In the television arena, he has served as writer, creator, showrunner, and executive producer on more than a dozen projects, beginning with his work on the writing team for Comedy Tonight! and The Flip Wilson Show. Other notable TV credits include his work as a producer/showrunner for the second Cosby show; Mel Brooks’ When Things Were Rotten; Doctor, Doctor; Showtime’s Paradise; the 2004 Academy Awards show (host, Billy Crystal); and the new Cinemax series Chemistry, presently in production. Mr. Steinberg previously taught at the Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins University and at the American Film Institute (AFI). He presently serves as the Parsons Family University Professor in TV Production at Long Island University, where he has piloted a novel MFA program in television writing and production. A magna cum laude graduate of the University of Maryland with a degree in history, Mr. Steinberg earned a law degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. Prior to launching his writing career, Mr. Steinberg was a practicing attorney in New York, specializing in entertainment and copyright law. Mr. Steinberg’s honors include an Emmy Award, a Writers Guild Award, and a British Academy Award nomination.

“Norman Steinberg is not only one of the most gifted co-writers I have ever worked with, but he also has been my dear friend since we did Blazing Saddles together 300 years ago. I cherish both his talent and his friendship.” – MEL BROOKS

THE JAMES F. HARRIS ARTS AND HUMANITIES VISIONARY SCHOLARSHIP FUND Dean James F. Harris’ impact on the College has been nothing short of profound. Under his purview, the College has become a recognized leader in language education and research, the digital humanities, and Middle East studies. He oversaw the development of the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center and the launch of the David C. Driskell Center for the Study of Visual Arts and Culture of African Americans and the African Diaspora. And his investment in innovative alumni/student programming, such as Access2Alumni, has helped thousands of students take those vital first steps toward rewarding careers. In the spirit of its namesake, the James F. Harris Arts and Humanities Visionary Scholarship Fund will recognize outstanding students in the College whose breadth of interests and activities exemplify key principles of an arts and humanities education—including the ability and desire to think creatively and engage in the world through global citizenship and cross-disciplinary exchange. As president of the Arts and Humanities Alumni Association Chapter Board, I invite you to show your appreciation for Dean Harris’ extraordinary leadership by helping to found the James F. Harris Arts and Humanities Visionary Scholarship Fund. Gifts to the Harris Visionary Scholarship Fund will be matched dollar for dollar, up to $12,500, which will create an endowed scholarship fund, awarded in Dean Harris’ honor in perpetuity. Gifts will continue to be matched through June 15, 2011. Thank you in advance for helping us to establish this important scholarship in the name and spirit of Dean Harris. Sincerely,

Kyle A. Bodt, IBM Global Business Services President, Arts and Humanities Alumni Association Chapter Board
