Who I ’mannual doesn’t like feasting on spectacular food and looking stylish while sipping on wine at our favorite restaurants and wineries around town? The best part of fall is the semi-warm days and crisp evenings where we can break out our cute sweaters and jeans to enjoy all the fun, fall activities with family and friends. Fashion on the shore seems to be a combo of beachy meets city with a twist of bohemian chic style. Not sure what that means, but I like it! Congrats to our first time “Find the Beach Chair Contest” winner, Judy from Morgantown WV. She won a $50 South Moon Under gift certificate. Congrats to her! I’m overwhelmed by the amount of entries we received last issue; keep them coming! There’s a new contest in every issue of Beach to Bay Times, so be on the look-out! The “second season,” as locals call it, is a time when beaches are pleasantly quiet, surfers can surf on any street, and we can enjoy riding bikes again on the boardwalk any time of day. Fall is also festival and pumpkin season, so check out our calendar of events packed full of fall festivals and local happenings. Among some of the festivals to take part in this fall are the annual Good Beer Festival, Autumn Wine Festival, Chincoteague’s Oyster Festival, Sun Fest, OC Bike Week, Rehoboth Jazz Fest, and Sea Witch and Halloween Festival in Rehoboth. Take part in this year’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk/Run on October 17th. I’m running this year for my mother and some close friends who are fighting or have beaten the breast cancer battle. For more information and complete list september/october 2015

family the importance of tending to the animals and land. “I’ve always loved agriculture, and of course, I wanted to follow in my dad’s footsteps,” King said. He grew up working on the family farm in Montgomery County, eventually graduating from the University of Maryland where he studied dairy science. Now, King operates the only organically-certified berry farm on the eastern shore of Maryland. King’s Organic Fruit, the six-acre berry farm in Ridgely, is in the midst of its fourth harvest, its second harvest open to the public. “I tried to pick a crop where there is a demand,” King said. He mentioned how there are already plenty of established strawberry and apple farms in the area, but no places for organic blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries. As organic crops have grown in popularity in recent years, King knew his berries would serve well at farmers markets, but selling the berries is the easy part. What makes King’s operation special is the calculated, safe, and environmentally-conscious methods by which they organically raise the fruit. “There are no good herbicides, so it’s a very labor-intensive effort,” King said. by hand, without the use of herbicides or pesticides. While most of his business is still going to wholesalers who then sell his fruit at farmers markets, King hopes to shift the bulk of the business to the “U-Pick” model, where anyone can come and pay to pick their own berries. prep: 10 minutes cook time: 45 minutes total time: 1 hour Berries of your choice Yellow cake mix 1 can of Sprite Powdered sugar 1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees. 2. Wash, slice, and prepare fruit. 3. Layer your fruits in an oven-safe dish to your liking. 4. Sprinkle your cake mix (in original form) over your fruit. This will be your topping. 5. Sprinkle the can of Sprite evenly over it all. 6. Top with powdered sugar. 7. Bake at 450 degrees, 30 minutes covered with aluminum foil and 15 minutes uncovered. 8. Let sit for 10 minutes after removing from the oven. 9. Serve with ice cream, cool whip, and any other desired toppings! 9

ssateague State Park is the most visited state park in Maryland, hosting 1.4 million visitors annually. Since its opening in 1965, numerous efforts have protected the barrier island from ecological dangers. Fifty years of tourism and hurricanes take a toll on the park’s facilities, which is why the site is getting more than $3.5 million in renovations this off-season. “Particularly on a barrier island, where the conditions are harsh, it’s difficult to maintain the buildings and make sure they are safe, clean, and functional,” said Ranger Angela Baldwin, manager of the park. “The current buildings are about 40 years old. Until now, they have had minimal repairs,” said Baldwin. The biggest project is the $2.5 million renovation of the bathhouses along the state park’s camping sites. The park renovated five of the bathhouses last year, and crews will begin demolition on the four 10

remaining facilities in October. The new bathhouses will feature an extra shower, increased accessibility for handicapped visitors, as well as “green” features, like low-flow toilets and tubular skylights. In addition to the bathhouse project, crews will haul in tons of sand to stabilize a 2,200-foot stretch of dune, which took a serious beating as a result of Hurricane Sandy in 2012. “We had a few places in the park where the dune was nearly flattened during Sandy,” Baldwin said. “They were repaired temporarily since then, but this renovation will add more stability to the dune.” The $1.2 million dune renovation project is funded by FEMA, with phase one beginning this fall.

ow that summer is coming to an end, fruity cocktails aren’t the preferred drinks of choice anymore. It’s wine’s time to shine. And I think we’re all thrilled about it. Winery trips and fun festivals are some of the best parts about the fall. There’s something about the crisp, autumn air and sipping through a wine glass that just tickles my fancy. As you transition your wardrobe into the fall and winter months, it’s not only about switching out your summer dresses for soft sweaters, but also experimenting with this season’s latest color trends. Pantone, the color authority of the world, released its most popular colors for fall 2015 and it just might

Although the inspiration behind this season’s colors are undoubtedly 70’s, the hues are evocative of what coastal living is all about—nature, beauty, and fun. From earthy tones to garden hues, designers reinvented neutrals and colors that come from natural elements, reminding us of things that are real and organic. That’s right, neutrals are no longer bland and boring, but effortlessly beautiful. “The Fall 2015 Palette is rooted in multifaceted, androgynous colors that can be worn to portray effortless sophistication across men’s and women’s fashion; it is the first time we are seeing a truly unisex color palette,” said Leatrice

Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. Appropriately named “An Evolving Landscape,” Pantone’s Fall 2015 Color Palette begins with a shade called Dessert Sage. This greenish-gray hue is timeless, making it ideally neutral. Stormy Weather, as its name implies, is reminiscent of an overcast sky. However, this blue-gray is far from dreary, but rather cool and luxurious. Next, is the golden hue of Oak Bluff. Symbolic for the sunshine that comes after the storm, this color is warm and cheerful. Keeping with the nature theme, Pantone pays homage to plants and spices with Dried Herb, an olive green color, paired with Marsala, a winey red-brown. These organic shades are rich and tasteful (no pun intended), and Marsala was also named the Color of the Year. “This hearty, yet stylish tone is universally appealing and translates easily to fashion, beauty, industrial design, home furnishings, and interiors,” said Eiseman. Bound to be a popular color for us locals, Biscay Bay is a cool teal shade that will have you dreaming of the beach even in cooler weather. Brightening things up a bit are Cadmium Orange and Cashmere Rose. These orange and soft pink tones are a nod to the 60’s and 70’s, and are playful, yet subtly dramatic. Rounding up Pantone’s top 10 colors are Reflecting Pond and Amethyst Orchid. Like its name, Reflecting Pond is a color with a lot of depth. It’s a cool blue shade that’s said to evoke sentiments of stability and security. The september/october 2015

As you may have guessed, the nature inspired color spectrum is a hit amongst local boutique owners. “Pantone’s top 10 colors for fall really speaks to the local market. There’s no denying our love for nature here on the shore, so seeing tones that resemble natural hues instantly appeals to my customers. The colors are more muted than bold, but very chic, and that’s what my shoppers naturally gravitate towards,” said Shelly Bruder, owner of Bruder Hill Inc. boutique in Berlin, Maryland. Indeed, this season’s shades are a lot more toned down than last year’s vivid tones, which boasted colors such as radiant orchid and royal blue. However, if you think you can’t make a bold statement with such subtle hues, think again. It’s all about mixing and matching color combinations for a vivacious appeal. 18

Try combining shades like Marsala, Oak Bluff, and Stormy Weather for a bohemian inspired palette like designers Rebecca Minkoff and Haute Hippie did in their Fall 2015 collections. If you want to be beachchic, play around with Biscay Bay and Cadmium Orange. Going for elegance? Amethyst Orchid can stand on its own, but pairing it with Reflecting Pond enhances its richness even more. The best thing about Pantone’s top 10 colors for fall is that they are extremely versatile, making the color combinations endless and pretty much fail proof. The neutral foundation allows you to really get creative with mixing and matching the different hues without it being overkill. Q: What do you find to be the most significant change in the real estate industry in the last decade? A: It would be the technology and access to information on the web. Some national, syndicated, real estate search websites can lead buyers and sellers astray with inaccurate information. It’s best to work with a local agent and use a website that is based on real-time data and is linked directly to the local MLS.

Q: What is the most unique aspect of the real estate market in the resort area, and what are the differences between Maryland and Delaware? A: We see everyone from retirees, to those looking for an investment or vacation home, to young families looking to enjoy the quality of life that the beaches offer. Some buyers are drawn to Delaware over Maryland for some of the tax benefits, but there are other factors to consider. I am licensed in both states, so I would be happy to assist in evaluating which is a better fit for them.

Q: If someone is thinking of selling in the current market, is now a good time to sell? A: If we look at July 2014 compared to July 2015, the average number of days on market has gone from 141 days to 117 days. The average sold price went from $208,716 to $221,772. In terms of inventory this year, the region went from 13.91 months in January to 9.52 months in July. We have buyers looking for condos, single family homes, townhomes, fixer-uppers, and more. Desire for property at the resort areas has set up a great opportunity for sellers. I offer a free market analysis for sellers wanting more information.

Berlin resident, Debbi Dean-Colley, is perhaps the perfect embodiment of those words. Once a successful hair stylist and salon owner in Pittsburgh suffering from Epstein Barr virus and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, she is now a self-taught vegetarian and vegan chef filled with energy and vitality. In her late 20s, she began reading about nutrition and health. Never a big meat eater, she decided to become a vegetarian, and eventually, a vegan. Once she started creating dishes using whole, plant-based, and unprocessed organic foods, the health results were immediate. “After putting some good food in my system, I felt better right away,” she said. She was so inspired that she sold her salons, moved to Jensen Beach Florida, and opened a small vegetarian café, preparing all the menu options from scratch. Family ties brought her back east where she now cooks for personal clients. She creates her own recipes, uses organic 22

ingredients, and supports local farmers. An artist as well, she considers every dish a work of art. “The key to keeping this food lifestyle healthy is maintaining the proper balance of nutrition,” she said. Debbi enjoys dispelling myths that vegetarian

Raw Beet Ravoili 2 raw beets 1 cup sunflower seeds (soaked overnight in water) Bunch fresh basil 3 tb lemon juice Sea salt 1/2 cup sundried tomatoes 1 tb fresh oregano Black pepper 2 cloves garlic 3 tb Olive oil 1. Soak the sundried tomatoes for an hour in water.​ 2. Thinly slice beets in a mandolin food slicer and fold in half. 3. To make the pesto, in the food processor combine the soaked sunflower seeds (after rinsing well), sea salt, 1 clove garlic, lemon juice, basil, 1 TB olive oil, and 1/3 c water. Process well. If still too thick, add more water. 4. Stuff the sunflower pesto into the folded beets to make the ravioli. 5. In a food processor, combine the sundried tomatoes, oregano, black pepper, and remaining olive oil. Spoon over ravioli.(Beets can also be substituted with turnips for this recipe.)

Place peppers, garlic, and salt in a nonreactive saucepan over high heat. 2. Cover with enough vinegar, or vinegarwater solution, until peppers are submerged. 3. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 20-30 minutes, or until peppers are soft and the liquid has reduced by half. 4. Remove from heat and allow to cool. 5. Blend in a food processor, blender, or with an immersion blender until smooth. If you prefer a seedless sauce, strain through a fine mesh sieve. 7. Taste and season further if desired. 8. Transfer to a sterilized jar or bottle and store in a dark place for a minimum of 2 weeks to age. 9. Freeze or can excess for future use. 24

First, the cardinal rule when dealing with

hot peppers: protect yourself! Second, select your peppers based on your taste preference. If you have a favorite existing hot sauce, find out what type of peppers are used in them and try making your own version. Third, if you like the flavor but can’t take the heat, know that heat can be tempered in several ways and still produce a wonderful sauce. Removing the seeds and membranes of the peppers will greatly reduce the intensity, as will roasting the peppers first. Finally: storing your sauce. Whipping up a batch or two gives you a lot of sauce, but you can divvy that up in freezer bags, or into mason jars. I’ve found that 3-6 months gives hot sauce the best, most developed flavor it can have. Just bottle, date, and place in a dark cabinet to cure. Remember to shake well before opening for the first time. GARLIC BUTTER 1 lb unsalted softened butter 1/2 cup parsley 1/4 cup chives 1/2 cup minced garlic 1 teaspoon oregano 1 teaspoon rosemary 1 tablespoon thyme Salt and pepper to taste Chop ingredients, mix together, finish with salt and pepper to taste.

in the kitchen 1. Soak clams in cold water to remove any unwanted dirt, sand, etc. 2. T urn pan on medium to high heat and coat with olive oil. 3. Combine ingredients, add clams last. 4. C over and bring to boil. 5. C ook until clams open. (Very short amount of time.) 6. Remove clams and place on plate. 7. T o make broth, combine salt, pepper, and garlic butter with the remnants in your pan. Be sure to stir to avoid separation. 8. Pour overtop clams and garnish with grilled garlic bread. Food trucks are like mystical creatures: something we hear about, yet rarely spot in its natural habitat. Previously, my only exposure to food trucks came in the form of movies. I vicariously lived through films, wishing I could walk down the street, conveniently stumble upon a food truck, and nonchalantly decide to order something. If only I knew where one (or ten) existed. Food trucks have been gaining popularity, for obvious reasons, yet they’re somewhat hard to find on the east coast. Until now. The food truck gods heard our prayers; 16 Mile Brewing Company in Georgetown hosted the first annual Summer Bash Music & Food Truck Festival on Saturday, August 8th. I was so excited about this event, I got there an hour early. (Don’t feel sorry for me; there’s no better place to kill time than in a brewery. Thank you, Brett McCrea.) september/october 2015

16 Mile thrives on the motto, “Keep it real, keep it local,” so the personal and down-to-earth vibes were clearly apparent. It was the ideal spot for the festivities to begin. Backyard Louie’s BBQ, Jakarta’s Indonesian Food, Vinnie’s Pizza Truck, Big Thunder Roadside Kitchen, Zoggs Raw Bar & Grill, Mr. Bar B Que, Vanderwende Farm Creamery, The Black Burro, and plenty other vendors formed a U-shape around the property. Right when it started, there were already lines forming in front of the trucks and families planting their lawn chairs in front of the music stage. There was also a not-your-college-styled cornhole tournament being held, with impressively-skilled teams from around the area gathering an audience of their own. Needless to say, this party was off to a solid start. Being surrounded by so many food 31

trucks in one spot is every foodie’s dream. Trucks from different areas around Delaware and Maryland came together to share a good time, and everyone was in high spirits because, let’s be honest, it’s hard not to be when you’re surrounded by delicious food, good music, and quenching brews. With everyone cooking and eating happy, there were smiles all around. Ashley Herr, owner of The Black Burro, shared her story: “I started the food truck last year. I was working as a taxidermist

and I got over that, so the next logical step was feeding people. I don’t know if I ever want to work for the man again, so I started a food truck and it’s a lot of fun!” Dawn Vanderwende of the Venderwende Farm Creamery also enthused, “We’re the only ice cream or dessert truck, so we’re happy they asked us to come and be a part of this event. It’s a pretty good turn out, and it just started! It’s definitely exciting and we’re excited to be here.” The food trucks in attendance have several events in their books for the Tacos at the Black Burro

near future, so if you missed out on this festival, don’t worry, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to indulge throughout the fall! Food trucks are definitely paving their way towards several areas in and around our neck of the woods. They’re no longer urban legends! And it’s about time because with food this good, no one should be deprived. It’s just an added bonus that they happen to cook on 32

wheels, so nowhere is out of reach. It’s all green lights from here. THINK YOU CAN’T DO MUCH WITH $40K FOR HOME RENOVATIONS? THINK AGAIN. After failing to find a movein-ready home with all the features she desired that were within her price range, Jessica knew that investing in a fixer-upper was the only way she would get her “champagne taste on her beer budget.” When she bought this foreclosure, it was in very poor condition. We’re talking water damage, mold, broken pipes, broken windows, and this list goes on. Everything had to be replaced. With no prior renovation experience or DIY skills of her own, Jessica hired Celtic Nations Contracting to transform a nightmare into a dream. The renovation only took four months to complete, and the outcome was a brand new, custom-designed home that’s a little bohemian, a little coastal, and super chic! september/october 2015



Honestly, I just pick things that I like as individual pieces and hope they look good together. I’m really into fun patterns, and I also love a modern coastal style. I love vintage furniture mixed with modern and traditional, so I’m beyond grateful for the family pieces that I have. I just wanted everything to feel lived in and inviting. It really feels like me inside and out.

INSPIRATION I literally had a Pinterest board for each room. I pinned things I liked, pulled elements from each pin, and then combined them to make every room exactly as I wanted.

THE RENOVATION I truly couldn’t have done it without Celtic Nations Contracting. I would show them a crazy Pinterest pin and they would either say “Yes, we can do that,” or “No, you can’t afford that, but we can do this instead.” The pieces they created are exactly what I imagined. Any renovation can be stressful, but I just kept my eye on the prize. It was hard when everything was in the demolition stage, but when the new stuff started coming in, I got really excited really quickly, and overall, it was a fun process. 38

FAVORITE PLACES TO SHOP Marshalls, Etsy, Dot & Bo, World Market, Pier 1, and Bed Bath & Beyond, just to name a few. Most of my new furniture came from Johnny Janosik’s, which surprises most people. They offer some really great lines that are totally customizable.

BEST ADVICE The best advice I can give is to work with a reputable contracting company like I did. Cut some corners, but don’t skimp on the things that make a large impact. Find your style and stick to it. Keep it simple with wall coverings. Be patient. Lastly, pin, pin, pin!

Fall is such an exciting time: the leaves are changing, everything seems to be pumpkin spiced, and let’s not forget sweaters and boots! We checked in with our fashion editor, Taylor Harman, also a life and style blogger, to tell us a little more about what she loves about the season.

What is your favorite trend for fall and how are you incorporating it into your wardrobe? TH: Right now, I can’t stop shopping for ponchos! They were briefly introduced last year, but they have come back full-force for fall 2015. They’re so cozy, and not to mention, a nice printed one can instantly kick up any lazy outfit.

What do you think is the most versatile piece for fall? TH: When I think versatile, I think jeans and boots. These are also my investment pieces for the chillier seasons. You want to find pieces like this that will last you for years; I like to justify it by thinking of how many wears you’ll get out of the piece. If that tops the amount you spent on it, then it’s worth it in my book!

What’s your go-to weekend outfit? TH: In the fall, I find myself wearing oversized sweaters with tights or leggings and boots A LOT, probably even too often to be honest. You can just never go wrong! Making Space for Joy in the Mundane Mornings of Back-to-School by kelli anders

Back to school means back to routine. Another season of summer fun has faded into early alarms, hurried breakfasts, permission slips, and every parent’s favorite activity: packing lunches. It’s time to reassess what will fuel our kids physically and cognitively to make it through a full day of school with energy and vitality! Here are some tips to bring more ease and joy into what can otherwise be a hectic or monotonous process, and some breakfast, lunch, and snack ideas to expand your menu of healthful options. tip #1: batch-prep I know a number of busy moms who swear by the almighty crock-pot as their source of sanity. Batchprepping is similar in that it requires a little advanced planning, with the payoff being efficiency when it really matters. Here are a handful of items that can be prepared in batches in advance to save you time in putting together a quick, nutritious breakfast or school lunch: Quinoa, rice, pasta, beans, and sweet potatoes provide an easy base or add-in for multiple meals, from sweet to savory. Homemade Granola as a snack, with milk, or added into a smoothie for extra crunch. 58

Chia Pudding – Soak chia seeds in your favorite non-dairy milk overnight and add fixings in the morning. Energy Bars, Balls, Bites – Experiment with a few recipes until you (and your kids) find a couple that you really love. Muffins – With endless varieties to choose from, aim for ones using GF or whole grain flours and some yummy add-ins like apple, pumpkin, berries, nuts, and chocolate chips. Dehydrated Goodies – Flax crackers, kale chips, fruit roll-ups. If you don’t have a dehydrator, check your oven as some come with a dehydrator setting. Soups – Freeze in single serve batches and thaw in fridge the night before. Popcorn – Air pop a big batch and put into single-serving snack or sandwich bags. Raw Veggies – Slice, chop, or Julienne to throw into wraps, spring rolls, salads, or snack bags. Hummus or Bean Dip – It’s not as hard as it sounds! You just need some chickpeas – a.k.a. Garbanzo Beans or other beans of your choice (can cook fresh or use canned to save time), garlic, lemon, salt, oil, herbs (fresh or dried), and a food processor.
