The Relationship Between Eating and Exercise

Diet and exercise are each vital components of a healthy lifestyle. While these components tend to be looked at separately, diet and exercise are actually interconnected.

Diet and exercise are each vital components of a healthy lifestyle. While these components tend to be looked at separately, diet and exercise are actually interconnected.

(amounts can be adjusted based on variables such as the weather and individuals’ body sizes). After a workout, the ACSM recommends drinking two to three cups of water for every pound lost during the exercise session.

According to the American College of Sports Medicine, adequate food and fluid should be consumed before, during and after exercise. Following that advice can help men and women maintain their blood glucose concentration during exercise, which allows them to maximize their performance and improves their recovery time.

Food also plays a vital role in maximizing a workout and improving recovery time. The AHA recommends fueling up on healthy carbohydrates, such as wholegrain cereals, whole-wheat toast or low-fat or fat-free yogurt, two hours before exercising. Doing so might pose a problem for early morning exercise enthusiasts, and in such instances the AHA advises eating a piece of fruit such as an apple or banana five to 10 minutes before beginning a workout. Avoid saturated fats and a lot of healthy protein prior to working out, as it takes longer for these fuels to digest in the stomach. Until foods are digested, muscles may not get all of the oxygen and energy-delivering blood they need during a workout, so it’s best to stick with foods that the body can digest more quickly.

Some people understandably may feel that eating before exercising seems counterintuitive, as food may contribute to feelings of sluggishness that would make it hard to maximize a workout. But what people eat, and drink, prior to working out is important, as the right foods can make a positive impact while the wrong foods can have the opposite effect. The American Heart Association and the ACSM recommend hydrating with water prior to working out. The ACSM recommends drinking between two and three cups of water two to three hours before exercising. Adults accustomed to working out in the early morning can try to wake up earlier so they can give their bodies time to hydrate before they begin exercising. It’s also important to continue hydrating during a workout, as the ACSM recommends drinking between 1⁄2 and one cup of water every 15 to 20 minutes during a workout 8   June 2021 | Grace&Glory

The Mayo Clinic notes that it’s also important to make food a part of your post-workout routine. Eating a post-workout meal that contains both carbohydrates and protein can aid muscle recovery and replace glycogen stores that help increase energy levels after working out. The most effective way to exercise involves healthy foods, which can improve performance and lead to quicker post-workout recovery.

Recommended Men’s Health Screenings Men need to be proactive in regard to monitoring their overall health. This includes seeing their doctors for regular wellness visits and keeping up with recommended screenings to catch and/or prevent illnesses. While men and women can experience the same conditions, health experts recommend specific tests and screenings for men in various age groups. Johns Hopkins Medicine advises that men are at risk for certain conditions, including several types of cancer, such as prostate, colon and lung cancers. However, Harvard Medical School states men are less likely than women to get routine physical exams and screenings. An American Academy of Family Physicians survey found that 55 percent of men had not seen their doctors for a physical exam in the previous year, even though 40 percent had a least one chronic condition. While many screenings are recommended starting at age 40 or 50, men should discuss family histories and risk factors to determine if testing should begin earlier. The following are important health screenings to consider. • Prostate-specific antigen test: A PSA is a blood test that measures how much prostate-specific antigen is in the blood. Measuring PSA has been a standard for prostate cancer screening for 30 years. General guidelines indicate PSA screening begin at age 55. However, having at least one firstdegree relative with prostate cancer could necessitate earlier testing. • Colorectal cancer screening: Colorectal cancer screening

generally occurs between ages 50 and 75. Tests include fecal occult blood tests, stool DNA tests, colonoscopy, and contrast barium enemas. Doctors will determine which tests are applicable and how often to conduct them. • Diabetes: Men who have a BMI over 25 are overweight and should consider a diabetes screening. In addition, blood pressure above 130/80 mm Hg or other diabetes risk factors could require a blood test to check for elevated glucose levels. • Abdominal aortic aneurysm: Guidelines recommend a one-time screening for men who have smoked between the ages of 65 and 75. • Hepatitis B and C: Men are at increased risk for infection if they have had unprotected sex with multiple partners, received blood transfusions or transplanted organs before June 1992, are healthcare

workers who have been stuck by needles, or travel to regions with high rates of the hepatitis B virus. • Lung cancer screening: Men should undergo a lung cancer screening through low-dose computed tomography if they are over age 55, have a 30-pack-per-year smoking history and currently smoke or quit within the past 15 years. • Testicular cancer screening: Testicular cancer is one of the most common cancers among young men, says Johns Hopkins Medicine. Early screening can include self-checks. Routinely checking the testicles for any lumps or unusual features while showering can help detect testicular cancer. Doctors may order a painless ultrasound if something is discovered. Health screenings are an important component of men’s health care. Now is the time to have a discussion with the doctor about which screenings are necessary. www.gracenglorymagazine.org  9

A Critical Look at Men’s Mental Health When we talk about the health of an individual, we aren’t just talking about the absence of illness, but a state of mental, physical, and social well-being. Mental health is such a vital component of overall wellness, but is often overlooked as a negligible determinant of our health. More than 42 million Americans experience a mental illness each year, and we are focusing on one group in particular this month. June is Men’s Health Month, and we are exploring the critical mental health needs of men, as part of their overall health and wellness. The following statistics help us to understand the complex needs surrounding men and their mental health: Nearly 1 in 10 men experience depression and anxiety: According to a poll of 21,000 American men by researchers at the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), nearly one in ten men reported experiencing some form of depression or anxiety, but less than half sought treatment. Men die by suicide 3.5x more often than women: Men experience a higher rate suicide than women. Depression, when left untreated, can in some cases reach a crisis point of suicidal contemplation. With so few men reaching out for help or support, and instead suffering in silence, this may be one reason why men face a higher suicide rate. About 6 of every 10 men experience at least one trauma in their lives: Men are more likely to experience trauma related to accidents, physical assault, combat, disaster, or to witness death or injury. PTSD can develop weeks, months, and sometimes even years after an experienced trauma, and can cause a person to relive the traumatic event, avoid places or situations that serve as a reminder of it, feeling on alert or keyed up for danger, experience nightmares or flashbacks, and a number of other troubling symptoms that can interfere with their everyday life. Men are almost two times more likely to binge drink than women: Not only do men binge drink more often than women, 10   June 2021 | Grace&Glory

men consistently have higher rates of alcohol-related deaths and hospitalizations. Men are also more likely to have used alcohol before dying by suicide. Forty-nine percent of men feel more depressed than they admit to the people in their life: A Today Show commissioned survey of more than 1,000 men revealed the truth that many assume. Men are much less likely to voice struggles with mental illness, and even thoughts of suicide. Making the decision to start a conversation with a friend or loved one about mental health takes courage and strength. It’s likely that someone you know is experiencing feelings of depression or anxiety, and you have the power to make a difference in their lives. Take action for Men’s Health Month by looking out for those that you love. www.mindwise.org

The Types of Psychotherapy Sometimes referred to as “talk therapy,” psychotherapy is used to help people with a variety of mental illnesses and emotional difficulties. One of the goals of psychotherapy is to eliminate or control symptoms that can adversely affect a person’s overall well-being and ability to function. People who are skeptical of psychotherapy should know that hundreds of studies have found it helps people make positive changes in their lives. The American Psychological Association notes that reviews of these studies found that roughly 75 percent of people who enter psychotherapy show some benefit, while other reviews indicate that the average person who engages in psychotherapy is better off by the end of treatment than 80 percent of those who do not receive any treatment. The National Institute of Mental Health notes that more than onequarter of American adults experience depression, anxiety or another mental disorder in any given year. Psychotherapy may be considered to help people dealing with such mental illnesses. Mental health professionals use several types of psychotherapy to treat men and women in their care and may even combine elements from some of the following therapies to meet the needs of the people they’re treating. • Cognitive behavioral therapy: Cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, can help people identify and change harmful or ineffective thinking and behavior patterns. The American Psychiatric Association (APA) notes that CBT aims to replace these

thoughts and behaviors with more accurate and functional thoughts and behaviors. CBT may involve practicing new skills in the real world. Dialectical behavior therapy is a specific type of CBT that helps people regulate their emotions and teaches them skills to help them take personal responsibility in regard to changing their unhealthy or disruptive behaviors. • Interpersonal therapy: A shortterm form of treatment, interpersonal therapy, or IPT, helps people understand troublesome interpersonal issues such as grief, changes in social or work roles and conflicts with significant others. According to the APA, IPT can help people learn healthy ways to express their emotions and how to improve the way they communicate with others. • Psychodynamic therapy: The APA

notes that psychodynamic therapy takes the perspective that behavior and mental well-being are influenced by childhood experiences and inappropriate thoughts or feelings that are outside of a person’s awareness. A person receiving psychodynamic therapy works with his or her therapist to improve self-awareness. • Supportive therapy: Employing guidance and encouragement to help people develop their own resources, supportive therapy aims to build selfesteem, reduce anxiety and strengthen coping mechanisms. Supportive therapy also aims to help people improve their social and community functioning. Therapists may rely on various therapies to treat patients with mental illness and emotional difficulties. Why Men Don’t Like Doing Cardio! So why do men skip cardiovascular training after a good workout? Well, I will give you my TOP TEN REASONS. 1. Cardio is hard especially spending 30 minutes on a piece of equipment. 2. Men view aerobic classes as for women only but can get a great cardio workout in those classes. 3. Cardio training can be boring. 4. When doing cardio, you will lose a little muscle. 5. Cardio makes you sweat, a whole lot. 6. It takes discipline to do cardio 3-4 times a week. 7. Unlike weight training cardio is done independently. 8. It takes time to build your cardio endurance. 9. Doing cardio doesn’t feel macho. 10. The longer you stay away from doing it; the harder it becomes. 34 June June 2019 | Grace&Glory 12   2021 | Grace&Glory

Being that June is Men’s Health Month, let’s take a moment to make sure you are getting the full benefits of your fitness program. A complete exercise regime should always include good nutrition accompanied with a cardio and weight training routine. This formula will guide you in the right direction toward total men’s health. When you walk into a full-service fitness center today you will always see an immediate separation in gender. Most of the men will be pumping iron with free weights, while the majority of women are sweating their butts off on the latest cardio equipment. I realize men enjoy building their chest and shoulders with weight training while women tend to be more inclined to achieve the fit and lean body. Lifting weights fellas has always and still is my favorite form of exercise. It’s a great stress reliever and weight lifting will definitely build a strong sculpted physique. Also, it’s a good time to connect with your gym buddies a couple times a week to debate on sports and current events. Although, that’s more than what most of our brothers are doing, you might as well get the most bang for your buck and maximize your total health with cardio training. After spending hours in the gym, the closest form of cardio that most guys will get is running to the front door. Cardio should be as important to you as weight training. Being healthy is more than just taking care of the outward appearance. A consistent cardiovascular program will give you a healthier heart, reduce your body weight, and increase your stamina. The American Heart Association recommendations for cardiovascular training are as follows: Get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes per week of vigorous aerobic activity, or a combination of both, preferably spread throughout the week. Add moderate- to high-intensity muscle-strengthening activity (such as resistance or weights) at least 2 days per week. So, gentlemen, I will suggest you incorporate a cardio training program with your workouts; if you play a sport such as basketball, baseball, tennis or golfing, these activities are a very good form of cardio. Keep up the good work and keep it moving. Can't Stop! Won't Stop! Can’t Stop! Won’t Stop! MEN'S HEALTH MONTH June is Men’s Health Month. This month-long celebration is a national initiative to raise awareness about health care for men and focus on encouraging boys, men, and their families to practice and implement healthy living decisions. In June, health-related programs are designed to encourage men of all ages to control their health by taking care of their bodies, eating right, exercising, and working to prevent disease.

The production of testosterone decreases as men approach the age of 40 and 50. This causes men to lose muscle mass and become more prone to weight gain. The risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes increases. Men are encouraged to increase the intake of fruits and vegetables, decrease eating fast and processed foods and implement a consistent exercise program to control obesity.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, men in the United States, on average, die five years earlier than women and die at higher rates.

Many men are hesitant to seek mental health services. Men suffer from depression and anxiety. They struggle with feelings of inadequacy, failure, acute and chronic depression, and the stigma surrounding these issues. These problems are often undiagnosed. Health care providers, clergy, and men's fellowship groups on all levels must provide a safe space for men to share their feelings and destigmatize the discussion of mental health issues in men.

Promoting health-related programs for men is essential. Men are less likely to seek medical attention even in the presence of symptoms. A study by the Cleveland Clinic shows that 40 percent of men go to the doctor only when they have a severe health issue and delay going to the doctor for routine checkups. The three leading causes of death in men include heart disease, lung and prostate cancer, and unintentional injuries. Men are urged to implement steps to modify risk factors to reduce the development or progression of these and other disorders. Smoking is a significant risk factor in developing hypertension, heart diseases, lung disorders, and various cancers. The chemicals in tobacco alter cellular functions leading to irreversible damage to the tissues. Smoking causes the blood to thicken and the blood vessels to become stiff. Blood no longer flows freely, requiring the heart to pump harder and faster to circulate blood adequately. Cigarette smoking is known to damage bronchial and lung cells, causing lung cancer and chronic lung disease. It is associated with the development of throat, esophageal and pancreatic cancers.

Young and older men and their families are encouraged to set and implement goals to improve their health. Think about ways to improve your health status. Do you want to lose weight or stop smoking? Do you desire to sleep better, gain muscle, or eat a healthier diet? Begin by working with your family to set small and achievable goals. Establish goals to know your preventable risks for disease. Take steps to create healthier habits, including scheduling routine tests for the early detection of disease. Document your family history with your physician. Join in the national recognition of Men’s Health Month by wearing blue Dr. Denyce Watties-Daniels on Friday, June 14th. New fathers can strengthen the bonds they have with their newborns in various ways.

Tips to Help New Fathers Bond With Their Babies The birth of a child is a momentous occasion in the lives of parents. First-time parents may be especially moved upon seeing the birth of their child, having never before witnessed something so profound. When the time comes for parents to leave the hospital and take their newborns home, new moms and dads take on different roles. Moms who are nursing or handling the bulk of the bottle-feeding while spending a few months on maternity leave may appear to have more opportunities than fathers to bond with their new babies. But there are many ways for new dads to 14   June 2021 | Grace&Glory

bond with newborns as well. • Hold your baby as often as possible. Pediatrician David Hill, author of the book “Between Us Dads: A Father’s Guide to Child Health,” says bonding between father and newborn has as much to do with contact as involvement. Many first-time parents are understandably nervous about holding their newborns, who seem so fragile. But newborns benefit from being held, and Hill notes that a bond will develop between father and baby if there is physical contact. • Find ways to spend time together. Fathers might not be able to pitch in at

feeding time if mothers are nursing. Because newborns spend so much time being nursed and sleeping, fathers may feel as though they don’t have much time to spend with their babies each day. But any time spent with a newborn can be a time for fathers to develop bonds with their children. Time spent changing diapers can prove to be a great time for fathers to bond with their newborns. Make eye contact with babies while changing their diapers, as Psych Central, an independent mental health social network run by mental health professionals, notes that babies have a preference for eye contact. • Spend alone time with your newborn. Fathers of newborns who are being nursed may feel like their is no ideal time to spend along with their children. But mothers, especially those who work and intend to keep breastfeeding after their maternity leave ends, can learn to use a breast milk pump so dads can bottle-feed. Learning to eat from a bottle will help babies in the long run, and dads can get some quality alone time with their newborns while bottle feeding. Fathers of babies who are bottlefed can spend more time alone with their children, and give moms a much-needed break, without the fear of having nothing to feed them should they get hungry while mom is away. • Help your baby fall back asleep. Nursing mothers may feel inclined to wake up with their newborns in the middle of the night and let dad keep sleeping. But babies are not necessarily waking up in the middle of the night due to hunger. Some might simply need to be comforted, and dads can comfort their children just like moms can, all the while strengthening their developing bond.

Go Forth Following the Father Go forth following the Father! Jeremiah 29:11 serves as a reminder that God has a plan for you. You can confidently follow Him because He has already charted the course that will lead to your breakthrough, blessing, or new beginning. Refuse to let fear, your finances, or past failures stop you from moving forward. God’s favor on your life is all you need to live the abundant life that He has planned for you. This month as you celebrate the great men in your life for Father’s Day, remember to recognize, celebrate, and salute your Heavenly Father and recommit yourself to following Him faithfully and to the fullest. You can go forth following the Father without fear. In Isaiah 42:16 NLT God promised, “I will lead blind Israel down a new path, guiding them along an unfamiliar way. I will brighten the darkness before them and smooth out the road ahead of them. Yes, I will indeed do these things; I will not forsake them.” The Israelites did not know which path to take but God promised to be their guide. He promised them that He would light up their path and make every crooked part straight. He wants to do that for you too. Go forth following the Father. He has already paved the path for you. Do not let past failures make you feel you are not worthy of moving forward toward your goals, promises, and purpose. King David is a prime example of asking for forgiveness and moving forward. He could have felt that he was not worthy to remain king after he plotted to have Uriah killed (2 Samuel 11:14-17) and committed adultery with Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11:2-5). Instead,

he prayed an earnest prayer, asked God for forgiveness (Psalm 51), and went forth following the Father to do great and mighty things. Jesus went forth following the Father healing the sick and doing many miracles. Jairus had faith in Jesus and wanted to experience a miracle. Jairus fell at the feet of Jesus and pleaded for Him to come and heal his daughter (Mark 5:23-43). He had enough faith to know that Jesus was able to perform that miracle for him. Jairus is an example of a great father that would do anything for their child even if it means stepping out of their comfort zone or breaking character. He was willing to lay his title and tradition to the side for sake of his daughter. Jesus is the epitome of what it means to go forth following the Father. John 5:19 NIV records, Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by Himself; He can do only what He sees His Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.” God favors you! The Master has already mapped out your destiny and now is the time for you to manifest it. Trust Him with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding (Proverbs 3:5-6). He knows your end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10) so you can trust Him to lead, guide, and direct you. Your blessing, breakthrough, or new beginning becomes tangible when you go forth following the Father. Tracey Nicole George

To Be A Black Man In America

“To be a Negro in this country and to be relatively conscious is to be in a state of rage almost all of the time — and in one's work.” -James Baldwin. Those words could not be farther from the truth, and to be a black man in America is to be constantly reminded that we will never be good enough nor accepted in a land dominated by white supremacy, in any capacity. It does not matter if we are the top of the graduating class at the most prestigious college, or even if we are the president of the United States; our mere presence is always met with skepticism, racism, criticism and down-right hatred. Truthfully, if one wants to ask what it feels like to be a black man in America, we must observe what it feels like to be a black boy in America, which is unfortunately equivalent to black manhood at times. Black boys not even being old enough to form proper sentences are seen as threats. Whether it be in kindergarten playing with other kids of different races or playing on a sports team. Our experience of blackness starts in our formative years. Our fathers and grandfathers had to be “men of the house” because their fathers were stripped away, lynched or fled to freedom from slavery. Black boys would have to grow up as men, when they could not even take care of themselves. These historic and traumatic events have created generational cycles of black men in America that carry these burdens into their families, their jobs and in every aspect of their life. Though we can focus on the negative aspects of life as a black man in America, we can also observe how we have coped and created outlets of artistic freedom during our 18   June 2021 | Grace&Glory

journey. Black men are instrumental in the vibrant culture that we all enjoy today, touching ranges of genres like music, art, entertainment, etc. Black men in America are creative, resilient, expressive and most importantly vulnerable. In the words of the great Muhammad Ali, black men in America are “walnuts”, hard on the outside, soft on the inside. We have been conditioned to create this exterior of toughness and grit to not only prove our manhood, but our strength in blackness. We had to be the supporting foundation of the family and show no sign of weakness or “vulnerability”, only to realize that we were essentially dehumanized; void of emotional intelligence and subtleness tucked away like a best kept secret. We thankfully live-in times where black men in America can be a little more expressive of self, but there are still reservations of many, some even in our own communities. It is mentally exhausting at times to be conscious of your existence, knowing that the views of the surrounding masses have only moved but so much towards acceptance. We are good to be the “token black friend”, but a group of us together “breeds trouble”. To be black in America is to be a bird in a gilded cage. to your good health

Moving On We have seen that the world is opening slowly but surely. The promise of a return to normalcy has been supported with the availability of a vaccine, following CDC guidelines and continuation of hygiene practices. These may be enough for some to get ready to move on, but others need more than information in order to decide, they need their faith. Belief in what God is doing in the lives of those walking in the Spirit is what will keep us in this season. Moving on is not just something we have to do as a country or community. There are also pivotal times when we must decide in our personal, professional and spiritual lives that a change for the better is necessary. We must face the fact that moving on is difficult and sometimes a challenge but is a part of life that comes our way through circumstances or is something we choose. Either way, moving on requires motivation and perseverance. Motivation is critical because it helps you develop and focus on a plan of action. Inspiration and purpose are important once you determine moving on is your 22   22   June June2021 2021| |Grace&Glory Grace&Glory

only option. Being stuck or forced stagnation can be a challenge to overcome but knowing what drives you can be critical to success in moving into your next season. The other important factor is perseverance. You must be determined to complete the goal you are pursuing especially when it is a result of circumstances and not by choice. When life happens and pushes us to move on it can take fortitude and strength to push through the baggage that may have gotten you there. Perseverance helps to get past the burdens and into the place of contentment and peace. Moving on is possible when you rely on God to order your steps. Use your faith and pursue wisdom in this crucial time. The world may be opening, but make sure your next move is with the Dr. Carla Debnam, Founder, strength of your faith. woman’s perspective

Choose Forgiveness The other day on my drive to work my youngest daughter shared with me that she was mad at her older sister. As her mother I was concerned, so I asked her what happened. She proceeded to tell me a story about how her older sister was talking really "sassy" to her, and it hurt her feelings. Naturally, my next step was to ask her older sister why she was being "sassy". She then proceeded to tell me her side of the story, defending her actions for being "sassy". Once I had heard her side, I told the older sister that she had every right to defend herself; however, it was how she said what she said that subsequently hurt her sister's feelings. I shared with her that even though what we say may be correct, we cannot control how the message is received by the other person. So I told them both that they needed to apologize to each other, and also that they need to watch how they talk to each other, because words can hurt if they are used wrong and without good intentions. The youngest daughter apologized and was forgiven. The older one proceeded to apologize however, her sister said that she didn’t forgive her, and in her mind it was justifiable. I was instantly bothered and offended by her response. I asked her why she didn’t forgive her sister. Her response was well thought out and calculated. She said that her older sister has a habit of always doing something, and she didn’t want to continue accepting her apology for the same thing. My response was the classic Bible teacher response. I shared with her that because she had Jesus in her heart that she had to forgive her. I didn't invalidate her feelings, but I wanted to give her the Bible, the Truth, and give her the option to live into what the Word said or not. Ultimately, living the Word out is an individual choice. I wanted in this teachable moment to equip her with enough information to make another well thought out decision, like she made in choosing not to forgive. In Matthew 18:21-27 it says, “Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven. “Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. And when he had begun to settle accounts, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. But as he was not able to pay, his master commanded that he be sold, with his wife and

children and all that he had, and that payment be made.” The servant therefore fell down before him, saying, “Master, have patience with me, and I will pay you all.” Then the master of that servant was moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt.” After sharing the story with her, her response was like that of a child. She said, "That’s a whole lot of times." I told her it’s a metaphor; however, that is what God requires for us to do. If you profess to be a child of God, then forgiving more than you can count should be what you strive to do. I also shared with her that when we sin against God He forgives us every time we ask, and He tosses it as far as the east is from the west never to be thought of again. After that we prayed and asked God to help her work on her forgiveness. I took this teaching moment one step further, and I mentioned to her that I would hate for something unexpected to happen, and she passes away with unforgiveness in her heart. After we cried and discussed things she repented, asked God to forgive her, and then she forgave her sister. There may be someone that you can think of that has wronged you so badly, that you feel justified in holding on to that unforgiveness towards them. I urge you today to release it, forgive them, and allow God to heal the wound releasing yourself of the hurt. The longer you hold on to those things the longer you give that individual your power. Release it. Allow God to heal the hurt and the pain so that you can move on. Harboring unforgiveness makes it hard to love. It also makes it hard for people to get close to you. One of the commandments says that we are to love thy neighbor as ourselves. Who is your neighbor? Your neighbor is the person that is next to you; which at any point in time can be anybody. Our Father thought of us, in these exact moments when it may be hard to forgive, when He made the choice to give the life of his son so that we could live again. His son was and is our perfect example and we should make every effort to strive to be like Christ, forgiving, loving, and doing Pastor Rhoda Turner our part to make this world a better Christian Faith Fellowship Church place. Critical Condition This is a critical season in your life. You may ask why I describe it as critical. Have you ever experienced or witnessed someone who was hospitalized, and you were told that they were in critical condition? Initially, it can make your heart skip a beat because you know that’s a time where not only are they under intense doctors care, but as much as you would like to fix it you know that only God can turn the situation around. Critical condition is not necessarily a bad thing. If you think about it, not only are you totally dependent upon the Lord, but you also give way for His power to be made perfect in your weakness. It is a time of complete stillness and trust. It is also a time when you are truly grateful for the many things that we can easily take for granted. Are you in critical condition? Does it look like your story will not change? Are you in a place where the only visitor allowed in your room is the Holy Spirit? I bring good news. The Lord has not forgotten His promises and covenant that He has for you. What has boggled the minds of doctors, family and friends has not confused God. He knows exactly the remedy for your condition. Maybe the Lord needed you to rest for a moment. Maybe He has been trying to speak with you to make things clear concerning your calling and destiny. Maybe the Lord does not want you trusting in titles or possessions. I think it is a great thing that He is monitoring your heart. Can you trust that what looks critical in the eyes of man is elevation in the eyes of God? In this season of your life you may feel weak, but you are 26   June June 2021 2021 || Grace&Glory Grace&Glory 26

not. In this season of your life you may feel insignificant, but angels are all around you. In this season of your life you may feel alone, but the Lord’s presence continues to be your help, strength and comfort. This is not the time to be dismayed. Even if the pain is so great that you cannot muster the strength to pray, remember the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. (Romans 8:26-27). Even in critical condition you are completely covered! The blood of Jesus covers you. The grace of God covers you. The word covers you. I do believe that your latter days shall be better than your former days, and just when others are ready to pull the plug, uncommon miracles will be your testimony.
