Christ The King Sunday November 24, 2019 Welcome Home: To Christ’s Glorious Kingdom Luke 23:35-43 1) Christ Shows his Glory on the Cross 2) Christ Welcomes Us to our Glorious Home

Last week in Grace’s Tucson Campus Ministry, we had a Bible study called “Let Your Light Shine: By Protecting One’s Reputation.” We learned how to use our gift of speech to defend and build others up and in so doing let our Christian light shine. To get our Bible study started off concerning people’s reputation, I had us go around the room answering this question – if you could choose how history would remember you, what would your name be? I gave my answer – Tim the Faithful, faithful both to my wife and my calling one as of your pastors. The students gave answers like: Kate the Great, Cassidy the Courageous, Jerry the Nice, and Magic Martin. As my students gave their answers, I wasn’t surprised that nobody said something like Jack the Coward or Jill the Doubtful. We typically present what’s best for ourselves. And we don’t do that by highlighting our weaknesses or not-so-glorious moments. When you came here this morning and saw that we were celebrating Christ the King Sunday, did the verses for our sermon this morning surprise you? When we look at Jesus in Luke chapter 23, we see Jesus at the most humiliating time of his life. If this was all we had about Jesus, history would probably remember Jesus as Christ the Weak or Christ the Criminal. Yet as we look at these verses with the eyes of faith, we will see indeed why Jesus is called Christ the King. For it is on the cross where Christ shows us his glory. And he did with the believing criminal, so he will also welcome us to his glorious kingdom and our glorious home. 1) Christ Shows his Glory on the Cross A lot has happened to Jesus by the time we get to our opening verses. He’s been betrayed by Judas Iscariot, arrested by the Temple soldiers, and unjustly received the crucifixion death penalty from the Jewish ruling council and Pontius Pilate. He’s stumbled to the execution hill of Calvary and got nailed to the cross. As Jesus endures the final six hours of his earthly life, we see in our verses how all sorts of people mock him. The Jewish ruling council ridiculed him amongst the crowd by saying, “He saved others. Let him save himself, if this is the Christ of God, the Chosen One!” (Luke 23:35) The Roman soldiers mockingly served him sour wine as if they were his servants and said, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” (Luke 23:37) Over his head was the official condemning charge 1
