Mark 4:1-20 [Under the Sun #9]

Dear Friends in Christ, We may not always remember that Jesus was quite popular while in this world. And by popular, I mean, he captured the attention of a LOT of people! Popular enough that thousands gathered to hear him on occasion, as well as other “large crowds” like we hear about today. Popular enough to get the attention of every Jewish religious group. Popular enough to capture the imagination of Herod, who wanted to see miracles. And popular enough to demand the attention of the Roman governor stationed in Israel, Pontius Pilate. Make no mistake about it, Jesus was popular—a ton of people knew about him and were fascinated by him. That doesn’t mean his message was always popular—in the sense of people liking it—however. This has always been the case with the message of God’s Word though, hasn’t it? Didn’t the Old Testament prophet Isaiah record these words from the LORD: my word that goes out from my mouth will not return to me empty. Rather, it will accomplish whatever I please, and it will succeed in the purpose for which I sent it (Isaiah 55:11)? Sometimes the message from God has the purpose of confronting people with his law…and sometimes this meets with rejection. That message then condemns those who oppose God. At other times, that Word fulfills the desire of God that people be saved, and it works or strengthens faith in him. The parables of Jesus did the same thing. Perhaps these words of Jesus in our lesson caught your attention: “The mystery of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but everything comes in parables to those who are outside, so that they will certainly see but not perceive, and they will certainly hear but not understand. Otherwise, they might turn and be forgiven.” The message of Jesus’ “earthly stories with spiritual meanings” was meant to build up those given the gift of faith. They also served the purpose of leaving those without faith with no excuse. They will have heard the truth of God, but their rejection of him causes them to not understand. If they would understand in faith, they would certainly turn, or repent, and find forgiveness with God. The Parable of the Sower before us today is about the sinfulness of people and their rejection of God’s Word and about the power of God’s Word as it works in people’s hearts and creates faith. This parable covers a lot of ground (pun absolutely intended!), but this morning, we’re going to run a highlighter over verses 5 & 6, then verses 16 & 17, where we hear how The Sun Scorches the Plants. That will allow us to think about our need to be deeply rooted in God’s Word so that we do not allow trouble and persecution to scorch our faith. As Jesus talked about the effect of God’s Word on people, he compared some people to ground packed down into a path, where Satan comes immediately to take away that
