Can you imagine what it would be like to live in a perfect world? In some ways, we can probably imagine, and maybe do think about, how things could be better than they are. We can entertain the idea of people getting along better, crime rates going down, more peace and more prosperity. And all sorts of people have tried to do the things that they expect might make the world a better place. They work through politics to try and create a society as close to their expectations as possible. They organize within their neighborhoods to bring people closer together and to help each other. They support the work of charities to help improve opportunities for others. And all of these efforts may very well have an impact. They may make the world, or at least parts of the world, a better place. But it won’t be perfect. In politics, as you have probably noticed, there will almost always be someone to disagree with your take on the best way forward. As hard as neighborhoods and law enforcement agencies have tried, the crime rate never reaches zero. And it is almost a certainty that a charity will run out of money before it helps everyone who could possibly use its help. It is a certainty that this world in which we live will not be a perfect world. And I am not sure that we can really even imagine what it would be like to live in a perfect world. What would it feel like for all our friendships and relationships to be perfect? How would our days be spent if we didn’t have crises to contend with? What would life be like without sorrow or suffering or pain? And the reason that we can’t really imagine what it would be like is that our world is so far from perfect. Our relationships are not always positive. We deal with all sorts of challenges and pain. Emergencies and surprises are simply a part of our lives. It wasn’t always this way. The opening chapters of the Bible tell us how God made the universe. They explain how he followed an orderly procedure to make his world exactly as he wanted it to be. And they go on to explain how he looked at his creation and proclaimed it very good. It was perfect. Everything was perfect, including the two perfect people whom he created to be a part of it, Adam and Eve. And while it is so far from our own experience in a way that makes it terribly difficult to imagine, we know what God says about those perfect people in his perfect world. They were made in his image. In every way their thoughts and desires lined up completely with God’s thoughts and desires. Since that was the case, they also lined up with each other. They enjoyed a human relationship unlike any other ever experienced. Their part of this perfect world was a beautiful garden called Eden. It was watered by rivers and had fruit trees throughout. These perfect people had meaningful but not toilsome work to do in the garden. And they often walked with God and talked with him. It was a blessed existence unimaginable to us today. And it is unimaginable because those very first parents of ours were forced to go on a journey. Their journey took them out of this paradise, out of this garden. They would live out the rest of their lives somewhere else. And all of their descendants have followed with lives outside of
