Pastor Timothy Patoka 1 Sunday After Pentecost: Holy Trinity; June 16, 2019 The Holy Spirit Reveals Our Triune God John 16:12-15 st

1) The Holy Spirit Speaks The Triune God’s Truth 2) The Holy Spirit Teaches Us To Glorify Our Triune God I’ve always found it interesting that around this time of year we are always going from one holiday to another. About a month ago we had Mother’s Day which was quickly followed by Memorial Day. Today we’re celebrating another holiday, Father’s Day, when we give thanks for all that our fathers have done. Now I know that not all of us may be blessed to have our fathers still with us, or necessarily have good examples of fathers. We live in a sinful world after all. But if you were blessed with a good father, and if he is still with you, then today is probably a special day. In the Christian Church, we are also at a time of year when there are a lot of special Sundays. First we had Easter and then shortly after our confirmation services at Grace-Vail and Grace-Tucson. We then threw in Good Shepherd Sunday, Ascension, and Pentecost. Today is one of the last special Sundays we’re going to have for a while where we celebrate Holy Trinity Sunday. We have the three persons of God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And while they are all God and persons of the one Godhead, they are still distinct from each other. As we look at our handful of verses from John chapter 16 this morning, we’re going to learn what some of those distinctions are as shown by the Holy Spirit who reveals our Triune God. 1) The Holy Spirit Speaks The Triune God’s Truth When we celebrated Pentecost last week, we saw how God poured out the Holy Spirit on his believers in Jerusalem to equip them to be his witnesses to the ends of the earth. The Holy Spirit’s presence on that day wasn’t a one-time action. While we do not expect to speak in unlearned languages or have tongues of fire dancing on our heads, the Holy Spirit is still active in each believer’s heart by teaching us what God’s truth is. Jesus said as such in our verses, “When he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. For he will not speak on his own, but whatever he hears he will speak. He will also declare to you what is to come” (John 16:14). What the Holy Spirit teaches us is not new or original to him. Rather what he teaches us is what God the Father and God the Son have already said and done. We look in the Old Testament and see God the Father all over. On the heels of Adam and Eve’s first sin, he promised to send a Savior. As time progressed, God gave more details about this Savior to help us identify him. When God the Son came to this world in Bethlehem, he received the name Jesus and lived up to every prophecy and promise his Father had said. And not only that, but Jesus also gave further instruction to his disciples which some of them recorded and elaborated 1
