Jesus Our Great High Priest Is the Mediator of the New Covenant 6

But the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, and it is founded on better promises. 7 For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another. 8 But God found fault with the people and said: “The time is coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. 9 It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they did not remain faithful to my covenant, and I turned away from them, declares the Lord. 10 This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 11No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest. 12For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” 13 By calling this covenant “new,” he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and aging will soon disappear. In the name of Jesus, our Great High Priest, dear friends, Advertisers love to use words like better, new, or improved to entice people into purchasing and using the products they market. The problem is that the promise that the new product will be an improvement over the old one doesn’t always come true. That isn’t the case with the new covenant that God promised through the prophet Jeremiah to put into effect in the future—the covenant Jesus spoke of when he instituted Holy Communion. On this Maundy Thursday, we have another reading that shows us that Jesus is our Great High Priest, and it does this by contrasting the covenant he established—the new covenant—with the old covenant, the one which established the Old Testament priesthood. It is an appropriate reading for Maundy Thursday worship as we listen again to the words our Lord spoke as he instituted the Sacrament of Holy Communion: In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you (Luke 22:20).” When Jesus spoke of a new covenant, he was clearly saying that this covenant that would supersede the old covenant. Today/Tonight, as we look at that old covenant, we will see more clearly what the new covenant is and we will appreciate all the more what our Savior did as he established the new covenant by his suffering and death and the shedding of his blood. Jesus our Great High Priest is the mediator of a new covenant, a covenant that is better, stronger, and smarter than the old covenant. I. Christ is the mediator of the new covenant, which is better than the old.
