11

From Troas we put out to sea and sailed straight for Samothrace, and the next day we went on to Neapolis. 12 From there we traveled to Philippi, a Roman colony and the leading city of that district of Macedonia. And we stayed there several days. 13 On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there. 14 One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message. 15 When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. “If you consider me a believer in the Lord,” she said, “come and stay at my house.” And she persuaded us. In the name of our risen Lord, dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Have you ever had that one person in your life who taught you life lessons that you’ll never forget? Often it is someone we’re related to, someone we see often and get to talk to. Time spent with a grandma or grandpa can be like that; they have such great life experience and stories of times that are fascinating. Moms and dads are very often people who teach us about the important things in life—how to treat people, proper manners, how to use the grill or fix the car or how to get the best deal. There are so many things to learn. As we get older maybe a special teacher influences us or a mentor as we begin a job. These are all important things and we need to know them in order to function in this world, but even more important are the things of faith, the truth about God, how to live a life of thanks to your Savior who lived and died for you. Parents, grandparents, friends, pastors—all these people may have taught us important lessons along the way. The very best teacher, however is the Holy Spirit, who teaches us as we open God’s Word. Today he does that and lets us look in on small slice of a particular woman’s life—and she too will teach us some things. Her name was Lydia and there are a few lessons to be learned from her—lessons in faith. Today in the words of Acts 16, we find LESSONS FROM LYDIA and these are the lessons: 1. Go to church!

2. Pay attention!

3. Live your faith!

The Apostle Paul had been travelling around on a missionary journey preaching forgiveness and eternal life by faith in Jesus Christ. He went from city to city on the coast of the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas and to inland cities as well. He had intended to go into a certain area, but God prevented him from doing so, giving him a vision and calling him to go to Macedonia, which was most of modern day Greece. He and his companions landed at Neapolis, which was the port city for the Roman colony of Philippi and then walked the 5 miles to the city.
