We are very pleased that you have joined us for worship today! We pray that this time will be a blessing for you as God comes to you with his Word and promises, and as you offer him your thanks and praise.

The order of worship we will follow is printed in this worship folder for you to follow along and participate. You’ll notice that the service is a dialogue between God and us, his people. The pastor speaks to God along with the congregation and also speaks the Word of God to the people. LARGE PRINT worship folders are available at the entrances for those who desire them. Today we are using elements from the new Christian Worship hymnal. You will find these blue worship books in the hymnal racks in each pew. You will be asked to open the hymnal to participate in parts of the service today. We hope this will help our members and friends become better acquainted with these new books. A vocalist will aid in our singing and will be recorded for our audio disks and video live streaming.

Welcome to Grace!

We Want Peace, but God’s Word Divides

Our mission at Grace is to teach the inspired and inerrant Word of God, to proclaim that Jesus Christ is the crucified and risen Savior of the world, and to nurture believers for lives of Christian service.

Check out the GRACE WEBSITE at GraceLutheranSAZ.org

The hard truth we will hear today is this: those who exalt themselves will be humbled by God. But Jesus also gives us the promise we need to be freed from pride’s trap. Our exaltation doesn’t need to be our responsibility because Jesus has already made it his. Those who humble themselves, Christ will exalt. Please join us each week as we look at these hard truth teachings of Jesus.

The Humble Will Be Exalted; the Exalted Will Be Humbled Put Down What You Love; Pick Up What You Loathe

OUR WORSHIP SERIES HARD TRUTH

Worship Notes

The First Will Be Last; the Last Will Be First

The Found Are Left; the Lost Are Found Serve God with Money; You Can’t Serve God and Money

What Seems to Help in Life Fails in Death; What Seems to Fail in Life Helps in Death

“Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as he made his way to Jerusalem” (Luke 13:22). Jesus knows that when he gets to Jerusalem, he is going to die. If you expect Jesus to use these final teaching opportunities to share happy thoughts, you don’t know him well. With a sense of extreme urgency, Jesus shares truths we need to hear, even if we do not want to hear them. As Jesus teaches hard truth, he challenges conventional wisdom. He reverses the normal and natural order of things. This should not surprise us, considering this Teacher’s life and work are the opposite of what one would expect. When the truth is hard to hear, the first temptation is to deny it. We cannot do that with Jesus’ teaching, for he never lies. When the truth is hard to hear, the second temptation is to simply ignore it. To do that with Jesus is to court eternal death. Thus, Jesus’ words contain an urgent warning: Listen! Take to heart what Jesus says! For his Word, though it contains hard truth, gives eternal life.

Speak, O Lord Christian Worship 633 stand

Minister: In the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit.

Silence for meditation and reflection Our gracious Father in heaven has been merciful to us. He sent his only Son, Jesus Christ, who gave his life as the atoning sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the (+) Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

+ ORDER OF WORSHIP + OPENINGWELCOMEHYMN

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. Let us confess our sins to the Lord. Holy God, gracious Father, I am sinful by nature and have sinned against you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved others as I should. I deserve your punishment both now and forever. But Jesus, my Savior, paid for my sins with his innocent suffering and death. Trusting in him, I pray: God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Congregation: Amen. CONFESSION OF SINS

The words of the invocation remind us that the God we meet and worship here is the true and triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. 1 John 1:8 9 “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” James 5:16 Christ gave the authority to forgive the sins of penitent sinners to his church: “Whenever you forgive people’s sins, they are forgiven.” John 20:23 2

5 Listen, my dear brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and to be heirs of the kingdom, which he promised to those who love him? 6 But you dishonored the poor man. Don’t the rich oppress you, and don’t they drag you into court? 7 Aren’t they the ones who blaspheme the noble name that was pronounced over you? 8 However, if you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well. 9 But if you show favoritism, you are committing a sin, since you are convicted by this law as transgressors.

10 In fact, whoever keeps the whole law but stumbles in one point has become guilty of breaking all of it. 11 For the one who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not commit murder.” Now if you do not commit adultery, but you do commit murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. 12 So speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law of freedom. 13 For there will be judgment without mercy on the one who has not shown mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment. The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God. Please stand

2 For example, suppose a man enters your worship assembly wearing gold rings and fine clothing, and a poor man also enters wearing filthy clothing. 3 If you look with favor on the man wearing fine clothing and say, “Sit here in this good place,” but you tell the poor man, “Stand over there” or “Sit down here at my feet,” 4 have you not made a distinction among yourselves and become judges with evil opinions?

1

My brothers, have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ without showing favoritism.

For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.

PROMISE I now ask you in the presence of God and this congregation: Are you willing to accept this responsibility and to do your work faithfully, according to the ability God has given you? If so, answer: Yes, and I ask God to help me. Yes, and I ask God to help me.

Teachers present themselves before the altar.

Dear friends in Christ, you have been called as teachers for the Children’s Bible Hour and youth education programs of this congregation. You are doing the work the Lord has committed to his Church: to teach the gospel of Jesus Christ, to make disciples of all nations, and to feed the lambs of the Lord Jesus. You do this work on behalf of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church and in association with the parents who entrust their children to your instruction and care.

INSTALLATION

Members of Grace, I urge you to regard these teachers as servants of Jesus Christ, teachers of the gospel, and God’s gifts to his Church. Support them in their work, pray for them, and bring your children to Children’s Bible Hour and Youth Bible Studies so that you and your families may receive the eternal blessings the Lord promises to those who hear and learn his Word.

Dave

Your work is both a great privilege and a serious responsibility. To equip yourselves for this blessed work, it is necessary that you faithfully study God’s Word, devote yourselves to prayer for those entrusted to your care, and carefully prepare for the lessons you will teach. It is also of great importance in the teaching of the Savior’s little ones that you set an example by leading Christian lives.

I now install you as Youth Bible Study teachers of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, in the name of the Father, and of the Son (+), and of the Holy Spirit. The minister shakes the hands of those being installed, addressing each by name.

May God grant you his Holy Spirit and give you wisdom and strength to carry out your duties to his glory and for the good of his children.

PRAYER Let us pray. Gracious Savior, you bless every effort to bring children up in the Christian faith. We ask you to give wisdom, kindness, and perseverance to teachers who feed your lambs. Teach them your truth so that they may teach others. Cause the children entrusted to their care to be eager to learn about their Savior. May your goodness go out into all the earth so that people in this community and everywhere may hear it and believe it, for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Hear us, Lord, as we pray.

Amen. BLESSING

Eternal God, you are the Father of all whom you have made, and you protect and preserve all your human creatures. You create the times and places in which people live, you cause the sun to shine and the rain to fall on the just and unjust, you bid us to hold in our hearts not only those we know and love, but all people in all places and circumstances. Hear us, Lord, as we pray. Lead us to see in the lives of all people the working of your eternal plan. Preserve us from an arrogance that elevates our service and sacrifice above that of others. Lead us to appreciate the gifts you give to all people and to give you thanks with our acceptance and humility.

For all the descendants of Adam and Eve, for all peoples and nations, those in lands far away from us, those who differ from us in race, language, and culture, that in some way they might come to see the light of your Son; For these we pray, O Lord.

May the almighty God Father, Son, and Holy Spirit bless and keep you. Go in the peace of the Lord.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

10

For those who bring food from the earth, who tend flocks and herds, who cultivate the ground, who find food in the sea, and who bake our daily bread, that they may know you, as we do, to be the giver of every good and perfect gift; For these we pray, O Lord. Brief inprayersintercessorymaybeaddedafittingplace.

For all who support us day by day, often without our notice, janitors and maids, cooks and servers, secretaries and technicians, and so many more, that they may enjoy the grateful thanks we children of God owe them;

For those who endure physical and mental afflictions every day and those who are tortured by disease and tormented by fears. Let them find in us Christ like compassion and meaningful help; For these we pray, O Lord.

For all in our congregations who work hard each day to gain their daily bread and then work hard again to support and participate in the gospel ministry, that they may be spared fatigue and frustration as they use their leisure time for the sake of your Son; For these we pray, O Lord. Hear us, Lord, as we pray in silence.

For people who live in great poverty or endure war and political unrest or experience oppression and tyranny, that their quest for security might lead them to search where you may be found. For these we pray, O Lord.

For these we pray, O Lord.

11

In his name we pray. Amen.

For those who help us in times of trouble, for lawyers, doctors, emergency workers, counselors, funeral directors, and all whose life interests focus on difficult times, that they may see themselves as those who extend your divine hand to the hurting; For these we pray, O Lord.

Silent prayer Eternal Father, give us a sense of purpose as we live our lives in the roles you have designed for each of us. Help us to see your divine plan in our calling and make us content as we carry out our tasks. Give us joy to know that we live for you and for others as the servants of Christ Jesus.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

Luke 11 record how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. We use his example prayer as part of our public worship, trusting that he will hear and answer our prayers.

Children’s Bible Hour: TODAY

“God just wants me to be happy.” “God helps those who help themselves.” These and other popular, positive, catchy statements might sound good, but do they really fit with what the Bible says? We recently started a brand new Bible Study topic, “10 Lies About God.” This study will help us respond to false teachings about God and to defend what the Bible teaches. Now would be an excellent time to make this study a part of your Sunday routine! Please join us at 9:00 AM in the Fellowship Hall.

Our study of “Prepared to Answer,” a book by Pastor Mark Paustian, a professor at Martin Luther College, tackles common questions and viewpoints that come from non Christians and even Christians on subjects like: “Do you really believe in miracles?” “But I’m pro-choice.” “There are no moral absolutes.” “There are things I’ll never be able to forgive.” “With so many interpretations and denominations, who can say who is right?” “Why doesn’t he answer my prayers?” Each question is handled in just a handful of pages, so it is easy to jump into the study at any time, even if you can’t make it each week. The book is provided at no cost to you and is yours to keep. Invite a friend and Join Pastor Koehler for what should be a very helpful study for us and for those we have discussions with about such things. This class meets on Thursdays at 9:00 AM in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall.
