THE DAY OF PENTECOST

G E L C T , A J 8, 2025

G E L C T , A J 8, 2025
Our mission at Grace is to teach the inspired and inerrant Word of God, to proclaim that Jesus Christ is the crucified and risen Savior of the world, and to nurture believers for lives of Christian service.
Check out the GRACE WEBSITE at GraceLutheranSAZ.org
We are very pleased that you have joined us for worship today! We pray that this time will be a blessing for you as God comes to you with his Word and promises and as you offer him your thanks and praise.
The order of worship we will follow is printed in this worship folder for you to follow along and participate. You’ll notice that the service is a dialogue between God and us, his people. The pastor speaks to God along with the congregation and also speaks the Word of God to the people. LARGE PRINT worship folders are available at the entrances for those who desire them.
Today we are using elements from the Christian Worship (2021) hymnal. You will find these blue worship books in the hymnal racks in each pew. You will be asked to open the hymnal to participate in parts of the service today. A vocalist will aid in our singing and will be recorded for our audio disks and video live-streaming.
There is no cost to park in our parking lot during Sunday morning worship services. If you receive a citation by mistake, please let our office staff know so it can be cleared.
It is easy to become so engrossed in the details of historical events who, when, where that we miss their significance. For example, consider World War II. There are many compelling stories. Lots of dates and data to remember. However, for a moment, set all that aside, and just imagine the Allies had lost. How would the world be different today? What would life be like for those of Jewish heritage? Would freedom exist in Europe? Would we be speaking German? With historical events, you miss out if you focus only on the details: who, when, where. You also need to focus on what that historical event means. The Allies won. That means something!
In this season of Easter, it is good we review the details: who, when, where. That reminds us that the resurrection of Christ is not fairytale or fable. It is a historical event...the historical event. However, we do ourselves a disservice if we simply recall the historic details of Easter without thinking long and hard about Easter’s significance. Jesus won. That means something! It is our privilege and pleasure to use the fifty days of Easter to discuss this fact: because he lives, not only is our eternity secure, but we have abundant resources to face the present.
In this season, our worship has followed this path:
Easter Dawn
We Have a Whole New Identity
Easter Day Death Has Lost Its Sting
Second Sunday of Easter
Third Sunday of Easter
Fourth Sunday of Easter
Fifth Sunday of Easter
Sixth Sunday of Easter
We Have a Meaningful Mission
We Can See Things Clearly
We Know Jesus is Trustworthy and True
We Live Lives of Lavish Love
We Have Deep and Lasting Joy Ascension He Reigns Over Everything for the Benefit of His Church
Pentecost Christ Sends Us His Spirit
The Jewish Feast of Weeks or Feast of Harvest was the joyful giving thanks and offerings to the Lord for the new grain of the summer wheat harvest. This is one of three major festivals for which Jews traveled to Jerusalem to celebrate. It was celebrated 7 weeks (49 days) after Passover. The Greek word for it is PENTECOST, meaning 50, since it is celebrated on the 50th day. Pentecost has become for Christians a day to celebrate the work of the Holy Spirit because of the special blessings he gave to the Church on that day shortly after Christ’s resurrection and ascension.

INVOCATION
Minister: In the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit.
Congregation: Amen.
As our service begins, the minister speaks the words spoken at our baptisms and makes the sign of the cross, marking us anew as redeemed children of God.
Genesis 1:1
Job 33:4
Psalm 139:7-8
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
Genesis 6:3
Psalm 6:1
Psalm 6:2
Psalm 6:4
John 20:23
John 3:5-6
The Lord said, “My Spirit will not contend with man forever.”
O Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath.
Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am faint; O Lord, heal me, for my bones are in agony. Turn, O Lord, and deliver me; save me because of your unfailing love.
Jesus said to his disciples, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”
No one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.
Isaiah 61:1
Romans 8:1-2
2 Corinthians 3:17
Antiphon for Pentecost
The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor.
There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. Come, Holy Spirit! Fill the hearts of your faithful people, and kindle in us the fire of your love. Alleluia!
The vocalist will sing the first refrain the verse 1. Please join in singing the rest of the hymn.
The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Let us pray.
Holy Spirit, God and Lord, come to us this joyful day with your sevenfold gift of grace. Rekindle in our hearts the holy fire of your love that in a true and living faith we may tell abroad the glory of our Savior, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Father, one God, now and forever.
Amen.
At Babel, sin led to God confusing people’s language. Grace would lead the Holy Spirit to share the gospel in many languages on Pentecost.
Please be seated
1The whole earth had one language and a single vocabulary. 2As people traveled in the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they settled there. 3They said to one another, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used mud brick instead of stone for building material, and they used tar for mortar. 4They said, “Come, let’s build a city for ourselves and a tower whose top reaches to the sky, and let’s make a name for ourselves, so that we will not be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”
5The L came down to see the city and the tower that the people were building. 6The L said, “If this is the first thing they are doing as one people, who all have one language, then nothing that they intend to do will be too difficult for them. 7Come, let’s go down there and confuse their language, so that they cannot understand one another’s speech.”
8So the L scattered them from there over the face of the whole earth, and they stopped building the city. 9It was named Babel, because there the L confused the language of the whole earth. From there the L scattered them over the face of the whole earth.
The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
PSALM OF THE DAY—Come, Holy Spirit
Christian Worship Psalter 104D
The vocalist sings the refrain. The congregation immediately repeats it and sings it again as indicated.
Vocalist: How many are your works, O Lord, in wisdom you made them all. The earth is wide and full of your creatures; they look to you for food.

the disciples proclaimed the gospel. Through their words the Holy Spirit unleashed his saving power.
Joel 2:28-32
1When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
2Suddenly a sound like the rushing of a violent wind came from heaven, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3They saw divided tongues that were like fire resting on each one of them. 4They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, since the Spirit was giving them the ability to speak fluently.
5Now there were godly Jewish men from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6When this sound was heard, a crowd came together and was confused, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7They were completely baffled and said to one another, “Look, are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? 8Then how is it that each of us hears them speaking in his own native language? 9Parthians, Medes, and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, and of Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt, and the parts of Libya around Cyrene; visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes; 11Cretans and Arabs we hear them declaring in our own languages the wonderful works of God.” 12They were all amazed and perplexed. They kept saying to one another, “What does this mean?”
13But others mocked them and said, “They are full of new wine.”
14Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and spoke loudly and clearly to them:
“Men of Judea, and all you residents of Jerusalem, understand this, and listen closely to my words.15These men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the day. 16On the contrary, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17 This is what God says will happen in the last days: I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.
19 I will show wonders in the sky above, and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and a rising cloud of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
21 And this will happen: Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL
John 14:23–27
23Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will hold on to my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24The one who does not love me does not hold on to my words. The word that you are hearing is not mine, but it is from the Father who sent me.
25“I have told you these things while staying with you. 26But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything I told you.
27“Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, and do not let it be afraid.”
The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to you, O Christ.

The Third Article of the Apostles’ Creed describes the work of the Holy Spirit.
The explanation of the Third Article comes from Martin Luther’s Small Catechism.
The Third Article of the Apostles’ Creed
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
What does this mean?
I believe that I cannot by my own thinking or choosing believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to him.
But the Holy Spirit has called me by the gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. In the same way he calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian Church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith.
In this Christian Church he daily and fully forgives all sins to me and all believers.
On the Last Day he will raise me and all the dead and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ.
This is most certainly true.
Please be seated
The minister addresses the new member:
Friend in Christ,
After a review and instruction in the simple teachings of the Bible and our Lutheran church, you have requested to become a member of this congregation. You have come to worship today to confess your unity with us and to take your place as a part of this faith community. I now ask you:
Do you believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? If so, answer: I do. I do.
Do you believe that the teachings of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod and this congregation, as you have come to know them, are faithful to the Word of God? If so, answer: I do.
I do.
Do you desire to remain faithful to the teachings of Christ, be diligent in the use of God’s Word and sacraments, and lead a godly life as the Lord gives you strength? If so, answer: I do, and I ask God to help me.
I do, and I ask God to help me.
Is it your desire to join us in worship and mission and support this work with your prayers and gifts? If so, answer: It is, and I ask God to help me. It is, and I ask God to help me.
With sincere joy we welcome you as a member of Grace Lutheran Church.
The minister addresses the congregation:
Brothers and sisters,
As we welcome LaVern/Marjorie to our Christian family, I encourage you in the name of Jesus to keep her in your minds, hold her in your hearts, and pray for her again and again. Show her the face of friendship and offer her a hand of support. Encourage her with your “works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”
Ephesians 4:12-13
Romans 12:12
We pray.
Gracious Father, we thank you for leading LaVern/Marjorie to desire to become a member of our congregation and for giving her joy to confess her faith to us. Guide us with your wisdom as we worship and work together. Mold our minds and hearts in a single Christ-like will so that we may be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, and faithful in prayer; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
The peace of Christ be with us all.
Amen.
Brief intercessory prayers may be added in a fitting place.
Blessed and gracious Holy Spirit, Lord and giver of life, you proceed from the Father and the Son, and, together with the Father and the Son, we worship and glorify you!
On this holy day, so soon after our Lord ascended to his throne in glory, you descended among his joyous followers with your holy wind and igniting fire. You opened their eyes to see the clarity and completeness of the good news just as Jesus promised you would. You ratified their ministry in the sight of the nations and conferred on them gifts and courage to be witnesses to the ends of the earth as Jesus called them to be.
Pour out your power on us again, dear Spirit, and ignite our minds and hearts to find our purpose in proclaiming the message of Christ. When success seems scarce, console us with the gentle, quiet whisper of your Word. When some will listen, open our lips to speak the truth in love. When enemies attack, defend us not with the edge of a sword but with the power of the gospel. What we pray for ourselves we pray for your whole church and especially for those who go in our stead to many places around the world.
Guide us deeper every day into the mysteries of Christ, and enlarge our grasp of his will and ways. Provide insights to those who teach your Word to others that they may expound your truth carefully and precisely. Bless our schools as they prepare men and women to preach, teach, and model your love.
Breathe into the hearts of those enduring serious afflictions, stubborn pain, and wrenching doubt and renew them with your power. Instill your sweet comfort in those who grieve and mourn.
According to your design, grant to us another Pentecostal harvest, that multitudes from every nation, tribe, people, and language may join the assembly of the church to worship you and give you glory.
Come, Holy Spirit, renew the hearts of your faithful people and kindle in us the fire of your love. Amen.
Members of Grace respond to their Savior’s love with offerings that are given joyfully, generously, regularly, and in a way that is proportionate to how the Lord has blessed them. Their cheerful gifts support the mission and ministry of our congregation. If you are a guest today, please know that we do not expect you to contribute to our congregation’s work. However, if you would like to give an offering to the Lord in response to his love to you, we are happy to receive it and put it to work in God’s kingdom. If you prefer, use your smart phone to give online by scanning this QR code:
Please fill out the Friendship Register located in the red folder at the end of the row and pass it along. Thank you!

Almighty God, we thank you for teaching us the things you want us to believe and do. Help us by your Holy Spirit to keep your Word in pure hearts that we may be strengthened in faith, guided in holiness, and comforted in life and in death, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.
Matthew 6 and Luke 11 record how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. We use his example prayer as part of our public worship, trusting that he will hear and answer our prayers.
The blessing of Aaron has been spoken over God’s people for over 3,500 years. The L said, “In this way they will put my name on [them], and I will bless them.” Numbers 6:27
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and (+) give you peace. Amen.

We are currently studying the first half of the book of Romans. The Apostle Paul wrote to Christians in that important city to reassure them and us that God triumphs over sin and sadness by his grace. Please join us for “The Triumph of Grace: The Book of Romans.” If you have not made Sunday morning Bible study a part of your routine, it’s always a great time to start! We meet at 9:00 AM in the Fellowship Hall.
Calling all kids! Have you ever wondered what the grossest, messiest Bible stories are? Join us this summer as we take a look at some yucky Bible accounts and learn that God can use even the messiest moments of life to teach us some important things. Each week we will have crafts, games, an interesting lesson, snacks and a whole lot of fun in a full-group setting. Sunday School meets from 8:45 to 9:45 in the Education Building every Sunday morning. You hope you can join us! Friends are welcome too!
Last week we learned that God wants to be number one in our lives through the account of Moses making the Israelites drink gold (Exodus 32:1-2). This week we will learn that God’s way is better than our way by taking a look at what happened to Lot’s wife in Genesis 19:1-26.
At our Open Gym at Grace-Sahuarita this Tuesday, June 10, we will play volleyball. Come for some friendly competition and bring a friend!
Our study of Church History is on a break this Wednesday, June 11, and next Wednesday, June 18. We will resume looking at the history of the Wisconsin Synod during the Great Depression and the World War II years on June 25. Even if you haven’t attended this class before, you are always welcome! We study together in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall at 10:00 AM and repeat the same material at 7:00 PM. Join us for whichever time fits your schedule best!
All ladies are invited to join Pastor Koehler for study and discussion of the book More Prepared to Answer (yours to keep at no cost) by Pastor Mark Paustian on Thursdays from 9:00 to 10:00 AM in the Fellowship Hall. Each week is an individual topic so you are able to jump in and out week-toweek as your schedule allows. Topics include Why should I believe the Bible? Isn’t religion discredited by science? I can’t handle your outdated view of sex. This will help us understand things better and be prepared to help others understand God’s answers.
Summer Fun Nights are returning! Members from all sites are welcome to join in these fun gatherings! Our first fun night is THIS Friday, June 13, at 7:00 PM. We’ll meet in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall for BINGO! Snacks and drinks will be provided. Join us for what has previously been a really fun evening!
Additional Summer Fun Nights will take place on July 11 at 6:00 PM for an Independence Day celebration and August 8 at 7:00 PM for Trivia Night. Watch for more details as these dates draw closer.
The fathers and kids of Grace Lutheran Church and the Child Learning Center are invited to a Father’s Day celebration on Sunday, June 15! A BBQ at our GraceSahuarita location will begin at 11:30 AM. We will be honoring dads with a variety of smoked, grilled, and bbq’d meats as well as sides, paired with flights of beer and/or bourbon. There will also be a bounce house for the kids! If you would like to attend, please email Pastor Heiman at revrah@gracelutheransaz.org.
Ladies from all sites are invited to join the Ladies’ Fellowship Group for a “Birthday Party” on Thursday, June 19, beginning at 10:15 AM in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall. Ladies, please bring a nice, wrapped gift ($10-$15) for our gift exchange and your choice of a fruit or vegetable. Birthday cake will be provided. Please contact Lois Thornton at (520)449-7552 if you have any questions.
Married couples! On Friday, June 27, from 6:00 to 8:30 PM, Grace in Sahuarita will be hosting a marriage enhancement seminar. The goal of this event is to provide a fun environment for married couples to discuss some Biblical principles about marriage, build relationships with other couples, and compete against other couples in trivia! Dinner will be provided as well as childcare. If you are interested, reach out to Vicar Noah Nordlie at 248-693-0374 or vicnpn@gracelutheransaz.org.
Through June, we are holding our 3rd annual food drive for the Vail Resources Food Bank. In the past, summer has brought donation shortages. Our goal is to provide some relief from these shortages and to help those families in need. Last year we collected over 475 lbs of food. Some specific items needed include: peanut butter, cereal, rice & pasta, and canned items - meats (tuna, salmon, chicken etc.), beans, soup, fruit, and vegetables. A box is available in the west end of the Fellowship Hall to collect our donations.
Our Child Learning Center was assigned a teacher at the Call Service at Martin Luther College on May 17. Miss Caitlin Broehm is from Appleton, WI, and will arrive in Arizona soon! Miss Broehm will be the Lead Teacher in the Toddler room. She will also be in the Director Training Program while she teaches. We would like to welcome Caitlin to Grace with an abundance of gift cards! Please drop them off at the reception desk at the CLC, in the Grace Central Office, or give them to any of the pastors. Caitlin’s installation will take place on Sunday, June 29, at Grace-Sahuarita during the 10:00 AM service. Lunch will follow in the gymnasium. We are so thankful God has blessed us with a new teacher!

Grace Lutheran Church is a member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS), a group of nearly 400,000 men, women, and children in nearly 1,300 congregations across the United States and Canada united by a common faith in Christ's saving love. We are committed to a common calling encouraging each other in our faith and sharing God's gift of a Savior with the rest of the world.
