THE DAY OF PENTECOST

Our mission at Grace is to teach the inspired and inerrant Word of God, to proclaim that Jesus Christ is the crucified and risen Savior of the world, and to nurture believers for lives of Christian service.

We are very pleased that you have joined us for worship today! We pray that this time will be a blessing for you as God comes to you with his Word and promises, and as you offer him your thanks and praise.
The order of worship we will follow is printed in this worship folder for you to follow along and participate. You’ll notice that the service is a dialogue between God and us, his people. The pastor speaks to God along with the congregation and also speaks the Word of God to the people. LARGE PRINT worship folders are available at the entrances for those who desire them.
Today we are using elements from the Christian Worship (2021) hymnal. You will find these blue worship books in the hymnal racks in each pew. You will be asked to open the hymnal to participate in parts of the service today. A vocalist will aid in our singing and will be recorded for our audio disks and video livestreaming.
There is no cost to park in our parking lot during Sunday morning worship services. If you receive a citation by mistake, please let our office staff know so it can be cleared.
Life is full of either/or moments where you face an unavoidable choice between two alternatives. Some of those moments are relatively insignificant. Either I have the chicken, or I have the fish. Other times, they shape the course of your life. Either I accept this new job offer, or I keep my current job for the remainder of my career. Either I accept his marriage proposal, or… Some either/or moments are bigger than others.
Here is the biggest either/or of them all. Either Jesus is still dead, or Jesus rose. One might ask, “How does that either/or affect me?” Because Jesus claimed to be the Son of God and Savior from sin. He said the proof is that he would rise from the dead. “The Son of Man must suffer many things...be killed and after three days rise again” (Mark 8:31). Thus, if Jesus remains dead, he is both failure and fraud. However, if Jesus rose from the dead, he proves he is who he claimed to be the Messiah. And he did what he came to do save us.
Either Jesus is still dead, or Jesus rose. That means, either Jesus is a complete waste of your time, or he is your only hope for salvation. If Jesus is still dead, it is completely logical that you should want nothing to do with him. If Jesus rose, it is only logical that he becomes the center and greatest priority of your life. Either Jesus is still dead, or Jesus rose. This season of Easter is a 50-day-long celebration of the fact that the Holy Spirit has answered that either/or for us. We believe this life-changing truth. Christ is risen! He lives! Throughout this season, we explore what that means.
He Lives to Take Me from Death to Life
He Lives to Give Me Proof and Peace
He Lives to Restore My Hope
He Lives to Be My Good Shepherd
He Lives to Be the Only Way to Heaven
He Lives and Calls Me to Live for Him
He Lives to Rule All Things for the Church
He Lives to Pour Out His Spirit
Thank you for joining us during this Easter season. We hope you will join us next week for Holy Trinity Sunday as we worship under the theme “God in Three Persons, Blessed Trinity.”
The Jewish Feast of Weeks or Feast of Harvest was the joyful giving thanks and offerings to the Lord for the new grain of the summer wheat harvest. This is one of three major festivals for which Jews travelled to Jerusalem to celebrate. It was celebrated 7 weeks (49 days) after Passover. The Greek word for it is PENTECOST, meaning 50, since it is celebrated on the 50th day. Pentecost has become for Christians a day to celebrate the work of the Holy Spirit because of the special blessings he gave to the Church on that day shortly after Christ’s resurrection and ascension.

OPENING HYMN Holy Spirit, Ever Dwelling Christian Worship 592
Please stand
Minister: In the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit.
Congregation: Amen.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
The Lord said, “My Spirit will not contend with man forever.”
O Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath.
Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am faint; O Lord, heal me, for my bones are in agony.
Turn, O Lord, and deliver me; save me because of your unfailing love.
Genesis 1:1
Job 33:4
Psalm 139:7-8
Genesis 6:3
Psalm 6:1
Psalm 6:2
Psalm 6:4
John 3:5-6
Jesus said to his disciples, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”
No one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.
Isaiah 61:1
Romans 8:1-2
The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor.
There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.
2 Corinthians 3:17
Antiphon for Pentecost
In Leviticus 23, God commanded the Israelites through Moses to observe certain annual feasts a sort of divinely given church calendar. With the death and resurrection of Christ, that cycle of feasts became obsolete; Jesus, the Lamb of God, was the perfect and final Passover sacrifice. Though God did not decree a new religious calendar in the New Testament, the church throughout the ages has established a calendar of holy days to celebrate the events of Jesus’s life, including Easter, Ascension, and Pentecost. This hymn recognizes the importance of such celebrations with its opening lines, “Hail thee, festival day! Blest day to be hallowed forever.”
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. Come, Holy Spirit! Fill the hearts of your faithful people, and kindle in us the fire of your love. Alleluia! SONG
The vocalist will sing the first refrain and verses. Please join in singing the remaining refrains.
Vocalist: Bright and in likeness of fire, on those who await his appearing, he whom the Lord had foretold suddenly, swiftly descends:
ALL: Refrain
Vocalist: God the Almighty, the Lord, the ruler of earth and the heavens, guard us from harm without; cleanse us from evil within:
ALL: Refrain
Vocalist: Spirit of life and of pow’r, now flow in us, fount of our being, light that enlightens us all, life that in all may abide:
The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Let us pray.
Holy Spirit, God and Lord, come to us this joyful day with your sevenfold gift of grace. Rekindle in our hearts the holy fire of your love that in a true and living faith we may tell abroad the glory of our Savior, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Father, one God, now and forever.
1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
2 Suddenly a sound like the rushing of a violent wind came from heaven, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw divided tongues that were like fire resting on each one of them. 4 They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, since the Spirit was giving them the ability to speak fluently.
5 Now there were godly Jewish men from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6 When this sound was heard, a crowd came together and was confused, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7 They were completely baffled and said to each other, “Look, are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them speaking in his own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes, and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, and of Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt, and the parts of Libya around Cyrene; visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes; 11 Cretans and Arabs we hear them declaring in our own languages the wonderful works of God.” 12 They were all amazed and perplexed. They kept saying to one another, “What does this mean?”
13 But others mocked them and said, “They are full of new wine.”
14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and spoke loudly and clearly to them: “Men of Judea, and all you residents of Jerusalem, understand this, and listen closely to my words. 15 These men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the day.
16 On the contrary, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
In the Old Testament, God poured out his Spirit onto the prophets so they could reveal his will. On Pentecost, Jesus poured his Spirit onto the Church so they could proclaim his gospel to the world.
The third hour of the day would be 9:00 AM.
The words of this hymn are based on Psalm 104 which is the appointed Psalm for this Sunday.
When God pours out his Spirit, it is not only for the benefit of the individual believer. God gives his Spirit to us so that we might be of benefit to the entire Church.
17 This is what God says will happen in the last days: I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.
19 I will show wonders in the sky above, and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and a rising cloud of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
21 And this will happen: Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
Thanks be to God.
3 Therefore I am informing you that no one speaking by God’s Spirit says, “A curse be upon Jesus,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.
4 There are various kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are different kinds of ministries, and yet the same Lord. 6 There are various kinds of activity, but the same God, who produces all of them in everyone.
7 Each person is given a manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 To one person a message of wisdom is given by the Spirit; to another, a message of knowledge, as the same Spirit provides it; 9 by the same Spirit, faith is given to someone else; and to another, the same Spirit gives healing gifts. 10 Another is given powers to do miracles; another, the gift of prophecy; another, the evaluating of spirits; someone else, different kinds of tongues; and another, the interpretation of tongues. 11 One and the same Spirit produces all of these, distributing them to each one individually as he desires.
Thanks be to God.
The vocalist will sing the Gospel Acclamation once alone. The congregation is then invited to repeat it.
The Gospel Acclamation points toward the words of the Gospel.
37 On the last and most important day of the festival, Jesus stood up and called out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink! 38 As the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from deep within the person who believes in me.” 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were going to receive. For the Holy Spirit had not yet come, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise be to you, O Christ.
Please be seated
The vocalist will sing stanza 1. Please join in the remainder of the hymn.
Jesus promised that those who were spiritually thirsty would be filled with living water. Jesus kept this promise when he poured out his Spirit on the Day of Pentecost.
The words of this hymn response come from Psalm 51:10-12.

Praise to you, Holy Spirit! We worship you as the Lord and adore you as the giver of life. As you were present at the beginning of the world to give life to all created things and as you enlightened and equipped the disciples on the Day of Pentecost by the baptism of fire, so by the baptism of water with the Word you made the light of faith shine in our hearts to know Jesus as our Lord. We confess:
I believe that I cannot by my own thinking or choosing believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to him. But the Holy Spirit has called me by the gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. In the same way he calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian Church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith.
Holy Spirit, Spirit of truth and source of all spiritual gifts, stand by us in the weakness of our sinful nature. Grant us a right understanding of the truths that Jesus taught. Give us strength to endure with patience whatever afflictions God may send into our lives. Help us, intercede for us, and train us that we may pray to the Father with boldness and confidence. Preserve us by the power of your Word in our most holy faith as members of the Church, the body of Jesus.
In this Christian Church he daily and fully forgives all sins to me and all believers.
Holy Spirit, you comfort and counsel us in every need. In dark and difficult days strengthen our feeble hands, steady our weak knees, and encourage our fearful hearts. Support us with the promise that in your final creative act you will raise up our bodies so that together with all believers we may see and enjoy the glorious return of Jesus Christ.
On the Last Day he will raise me and all the dead and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ. This is most certainly true. Amen.
Hear us, Lord, as we pray in silence.
Silent prayer
Come, Holy Spirit, renew our hearts
And kindle in us the fire of your love. Amen.
Brief intercessory prayers may be added in a fitting place.
The bolded words come from Luther’s Explanation to the Third Article as found in the Small Catechism. They serve as a reminder of the work of the Holy Spirit and a confession of our faith in Him.
O Day Full of Grace Christian Worship 477
Members of Grace respond to their Savior’s love with offerings that are given joyfully, generously, regularly, and in a way that is proportionate to how the Lord has blessed them. Their cheerful gifts support the mission and ministry of our congregation. If you are a guest today, please know that we do not expect you to contribute to our congregation’s work. However, if you would like to give an offering to the Lord in response to his love to you, we are happy to receive it and put it to work in God’s kingdom. If you prefer, use your smart phone to give online by scanning this QR code:
Please fill out the Friendship Register located in the red folder at the end of the row and pass it along. Thank you!
Matthew 6 and Luke 11 record how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. We use his example prayer as part of our public worship, trusting that he will hear and answer our prayers. The blessing of Aaron has been spoken over God’s people for over 3,500 years. The L said, “In this way they will put my name on [them], and I will bless them.” Numbers 6:27
Please stand
Almighty God, we thank you for teaching us the things you want us to believe and do. Help us by your Holy Spirit to keep your Word in pure hearts that we may be strengthened in faith, guided in holiness, and comforted in life and in death, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and (+) give you peace.
Amen.

The flowers beautifying our altar today have been given by Pastor and Beth Kassulke in celebration of the birthdays today of their son David and Beth’s mom, Debbie Vetting!
If you would like to provide flowers for the altar, please call (520-623-6633) or email (office@gracelutheransaz.org) the Grace Central Office to reserve a Sunday. Upcoming available Sundays are July 2, 9, 23, & 30. The cost for the 2 bouquets is $32.50. After the 10:00 AM service you may take the flowers home or leave them to be dropped off to one of our homebound members if a visit is being made.
Following the service this morning, you are invited to join us in the courtyard for drinks and snacks. We thank the Miller family for hosting this week. The next available dates to host are all the Sundays in June, including NEXT Sunday, June 4. Please sign up on the sheet in the Fellowship Hall.
Grace Moments and Meditations daily devotional books are at either door to church and in the Fellowship Hall. A new Meditations book with devotions beginning TODAY is now available.
Grow In Grace is the name of our Bible Information Class, an overview of what the Bible teaches that we use as a course for adults who may be interested in membership at Grace. The young people in our Confirmation Classes learn the same material in a slightly different way. Is it time for a review? Do you have questions that you have been waiting to ask? Join us on Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM in the Fellowship Hall as we consider portions of our Grow In Grace Class and look at why we teach what we do. Today we begin discussing the Ten Commandments.
Grace members and friends are invited to celebrate the high school graduation of Naomi Kassulke at an Open House in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall and Courtyard today from 4:00 to 8:00 PM.
Join us on Wednesdays for our study of Church History. We are currently studying the church during the American Revolution. Even if you haven’t attended this class before, this is an excellent time to join. We study together in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall at 10:00 AM and repeat the same material at 7:00 PM. Join us for whichever time fits your schedule best!
“There are things I’ll never be able to forgive.” “With so many interpretations and denominations, who can say who is right?” “I’ll let my kids decide for themselves.” “Whatever happened to tolerance?” “Religion is a crutch for the weak.” We hear these kinds of things and may even wonder about them ourselves. These and more are addressed in Pastor Mark Paustian’s book, “Prepared to Answer.” The book is provided at no cost for everyone in the class, and each question is handled in just a handful of pages, so it is easy to jump into the study at any time, even if you can’t make it each week. Invite a friend and join Pastor Koehler for this study which is helpful for us and for those we have discussions with about such things. This class meets on Thursdays at 9:00 AM in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall.
Grace is hosting a group of 7th grade students from St. Marcus Lutheran School (WELS) in Milwaukee. They are arriving in Tucson THIS Friday, June 2, through the program “Discover America” which rewards students based on their academic performance and behavior. Each student raised a portion of the expenses to come on the trip.
If you would like to make a donation to help cover our expenses, please drop it in the offering plate in an envelope marked “St. Marcus” or bring it to the church office.
We could use volunteers to help serve dinner on Friday, breakfast on Saturday, and prep sack lunches for Saturday. Please see the sign-up sheets in the Fellowship Hall. If you have any questions, please contact Debbie Koehler in the Grace Central Office at (520)623-6633.
In conjunction with hosting the students from St. Marcus, we are also having a Summer Fun Night so members can visit with the students and enjoy dinner and some games of BINGO with them! In previous years, members have greatly enjoyed spending time with these students. Please join us in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall beginning at 6:00 PM THIS Friday, June 2.
Additional Summer Fun Nights will be held on June 16, July 7, July 21, and August 4. Watch for event details along with postcard invites to give to your friends!
The Lifeliners (our high school youth group) will be getting together this summer on select Sunday evenings for Food, Faith, & Fun (F3) in the Grace-Tucson Student Center! Our first Lifeliners F3 will be next Sunday, June 4, from 6:00 to 8:30 PM. We’ll enjoy an orange chicken dinner, Bible study on Proverbs 6 (being productive), and laugh-out-loud fun with Pastor Patoka’s SuperFight game. RSVPs are appreciated and can be sent to Pastor Patoka.
The Ladies’ Fellowship Group will meet at Grace-Tucson on Thursday, June 15, at 10:15 AM following the Women’s Bible class. They will head down to the Student Center in the church basement to watch a movie and enjoy lunch and ice cream sundaes. Please bring a sack lunch and your favorite ice cream topping. If you have any questions, please contact Lois Thornton at (520)323 -8772 or vthornto2@gmail.com. Ladies from all Grace sites are welcome to join in the fun!
Join us for a Summer Fun Night that is sure to be a great time! Our Disney-themed “Happiest Place on Earth” is coming up on Friday, June 16, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. We’ll play Disney themed games including Disney trivia (review your movies and songs!) and some outdoor games. If possible, please wear your favorite Disney attire! Snacks and drinks will be provided.
Our members at Grace-Vail are organizing a food drive for the Vail Food Bank during the month of June. The Vail Food Bank donations tend to slow down during the summer months and this can lead to shortages, especially with kids who normally receive meals at school being home for the summer. We are hoping to provide some relief from this shortage. Specific items needed include: peanut butter, cereal, rice & pasta, and canned items - meats (tuna, salmon, chicken etc.), beans, tomato sauce or diced tomatoes, soup, fruit, and vegetables. There is a donation box available in the west end of the Fellowship Hall.
Travel back in time with us as we go Back to Jerusalem at Vacation Bible School!
We will turn back the clock in Jerusalem and Jericho, at Golgotha, on a Lonely Road, and in Athens and discover the Bible’s truths through songs, games, crafts, snacks, and lessons. Time travelers entering preschool through grade 5 are invited to attend from 9:00 to 11:30 AM from June 19 to 23 at Grace-Tucson. Invitation cards to use for inviting your friends are available at each of the church doors and in the Fellowship Hall. Visit GraceLutheranSAZ.org/VBS for more information and registration.
Grace's English Classes have been blessed to share Christ's love with a weekly average of 15 adult students and 5 children from the English-learning community since January. Could you help Grace offer these Tuesday evening classes (6:30 to 8:30 PM) throughout summer? If you are interested in teaching English (training and books provided) or playing with children ages 3-10 (games, toys, and crafts provided), contact Pastor Patoka (RevTLP@GraceLutheranSAZ.org).
This schedule is subject to change. Please watch your email for the most up-to-date information or call the Grace Central Office at (520)623-6633 if you have questions.
The Grace Central Office located here at our Tucson site will be closed tomorrow, May 29, in observance of Memorial Day. Regular office hours will resume on Tuesday, May 30. Regular office hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. There is often someone available in the office later than 3:00. You may always call (520-623-6633) or email (office@GraceLutheranSAZ.org) the office. Phone messages and emails are checked regularly.
