THE DAY OF PENTECOST

E L C T , A M 19, 2024

E L C T , A M 19, 2024
Our mission at Grace is to teach the inspired and inerrant Word of God, to proclaim that Jesus Christ is the crucified and risen Savior of the world, and to nurture believers for lives of Christian service.
Check out the GRACE WEBSITE at GraceLutheranSAZ.org
We are very pleased that you have joined us for worship today! We pray that this time will be a blessing for you as God comes to you with his Word and promises and as you offer him your thanks and praise.
The order of worship we will follow is printed in this worship folder for you to follow along and participate. You’ll notice that the service is a dialogue between God and us, his people. The pastor speaks to God along with the congregation and also speaks the Word of God to the people. LARGE PRINT worship folders are available at the entrances for those who desire them.
Today we are using elements from the Christian Worship (2021) hymnal. You will find these blue worship books in the hymnal racks in each pew. You will be asked to open the hymnal to participate in parts of the service today. A vocalist will aid in our singing and will be recorded for our audio disks and video live-streaming.
There is no cost to park in our parking lot during Sunday morning worship services. If you receive a citation by mistake, please let our office staff know so it can be cleared.
St. Paul writes, “Christ has indeed been raised from the dead” (1 Corinthians 15:20). Big word: Indeed! Paul is stressing that we must not think of Jesus’ resurrection like a happy ending to another epic fable. The resurrection is not legend. It really happened. Easter is not just a holiday. Easter is history. On time’s infinite line, Jesus’ resurrection is the punctiliar moment that defines reality for us all. If Christ remained dead, he is a fraud and failure. But Christ has indeed been raised. So, the reality: Jesus is exactly what he claimed to be the Son of God, our Lord and Savior. If Christ remained dead, then the grave is the final, ugly, rotten end of us all. But Christ has indeed been raised. So, the reality is Jesus’ resurrection proves that “all will be made alive” (1 Corinthians 15:22). The reality of the resurrection does not just change our future, but the way we look at life now.
The greatest theologian of the early church, Augustine, called the season of Easter “a joyful week of weeks” seven wonderful weeks, each seven glorious days long. In this glorious season, let us meditate upon the breath-taking implications of the resurrection reality.
Our worship during this season is following these themes:
Easter Sunrise Without the Resurrection Faith Is Futile
Easter Festival
Second Sunday of Easter
Third Sunday of Easter
Fourth Sunday of Easter
All Will Be Made Alive
The Living Lord Gives Proof and Peace
We Have a Meaningful Message to Share
The Risen Savior Provides Good Shepherding
Fifth Sunday of Easter Special Service Featuring Stephen Bautista
Sixth Sunday of Easter Jesus’ Business Is Love; Therefore, So Is Ours
Ascension of Our Lord Christ’s Ascension Means He Is Closer Than Ever
The Day of Pentecost Christ Has Not Left Us Alone
The Jewish Feast of Weeks or Feast of Harvest was the joyful giving thanks and offerings to the Lord for the new grain of the summer wheat harvest. This is one of three major festivals for which Jews travelled to Jerusalem to celebrate. It was celebrated 7 weeks (49 days) after Passover. The Greek word for it is PENTECOST, meaning 50, since it is celebrated on the 50th day. Pentecost has become for Christians a day to celebrate the work of the Holy Spirit because of the special blessings he gave to the Church on that day shortly after Christ’s resurrection and ascension.
Please stand
Minister: In the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit. Congregation: Amen.
HYMN RESPONSE—O Holy Spirit, Enter In Christian Worship 590
O Holy Spirit, Enter In Timothy Shaw; Zach Unke
Genesis 1:1
Job 33:4
Psalm 139:7-8
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
Genesis 6:3
Psalm 6:1
Psalm 6:2
Psalm 6:4
John 20:23
John 3:5-6
The Lord said, “My Spirit will not contend with man forever.”
O Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath.
Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am faint; O Lord, heal me, for my bones are in agony. Turn, O Lord, and deliver me; save me because of your unfailing love.
Jesus said to his disciples, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”
No one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.
Isaiah 61:1
Romans 8:1-2
2 Corinthians 3:17
Antiphon for Pentecost
The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor.
There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. Come, Holy Spirit! Fill the hearts of your faithful people, and kindle in us the fire of your love. Alleluia!
The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Let us pray.
Holy Spirit, God and Lord, come to us this joyful day with your sevenfold gift of grace. Rekindle in our hearts the holy fire of your love that in a true and living faith we may tell abroad the glory of our Savior, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Father, one God, now and forever.
Amen.

Ezekiel 37:1-14
1 The hand of the L was upon me. He brought me out by the Spirit of the L and set me down in the middle of a valley, which was full of bones. 2 He had me pass through them and go all over among them. There were very many on the valley floor, and they were very dry.
3 He said to me, “Son of man, can these dry bones live?” I answered, “L God, you know.” 4 Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the L .’”
5 This is what the L God says to these bones.
I am about to make breath enter you so that you will live. 6 I will attach tendons to you. I will put flesh back on you. I will cover you with skin and put breath in you, and you will live. Then you will know that I am the L .
7 So I prophesied as I had been commanded, and as I was prophesying there was a noise, a rattling, as the bones came together, one bone connecting to another. 8 As I watched, tendons were attached to them, then flesh grew over them, and skin covered them. But there was no breath in them.
9 Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the wind. Prophesy, son of man, and say to the wind that this is what the L God says. From the four winds, come, O wind, and breathe into these slain so that they may live.”
10 So I prophesied as he commanded me. Breath entered them, and they came back to life. They stood on their feet, a very, very large army.
11 Then he said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They are saying, ‘Our bones are dried up. Our hope is lost. We have been completely cut off.’ 12 Therefore, prophesy and say to them that this is what the L God says. My people, I am going to open your graves and raise you up from your graves and bring you back to the soil of Israel. 13 Then you will know that I am the L , when I open your graves and raise you up from your graves, O my people. 14 I will put my Spirit in you, and you will live. I will settle you on your own land, and you will know that I, the L , have spoken, and I have done it, declares the L .”
The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
The Lord allows Ezekiel to see that the Spirit would give that prophet’s words the power to raise the dead to life.
The Day of Pentecost was the fulfillment of God’s promise to pour out his Spirit.
The third hour of the day would be 9:00 AM.
Joel2:28-32
1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
2 Suddenly a sound like the rushing of a violent wind came from heaven, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw divided tongues that were like fire resting on each one of them. 4 They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, since the Spirit was giving them the ability to speak fluently.
5 Now there were godly Jewish men from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6 When this sound was heard, a crowd came together and was confused, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7 They were completely baffled and said to each other, “Look, are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them speaking in his own native language?
9 Parthians, Medes, and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, and of Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt, and the parts of Libya around Cyrene; visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes; 11 Cretans and Arabs we hear them declaring in our own languages the wonderful works of God.” 12 They were all amazed and perplexed. They kept saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others mocked them and said, “They are full of new wine.”
14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and spoke loudly and clearly to them: “Men of Judea, and all you residents of Jerusalem, understand this, and listen closely to my words. 15 These men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the day.
16 On the contrary, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17 This is what God says will happen in the last days: I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.
19 I will show wonders in the sky above, and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and a rising cloud of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
21 And this will happen: Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL John 15:26-27; 16:4-11
26 “When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father he will testify about me. 27 And you also are going to testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.
4 “ I did not tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.
5 “But now I am going away to him who sent me, and not one of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 Yet because I have told you these things, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I am telling you the truth: It is good for you that I go away. For if I do not go away, the Counselor will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will convict the world about sin, about righteousness, and about judgment: 9 about sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me; 11 about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.”
The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise be to you, O Christ.
The Gospel Acclamation points toward the words of the Gospel.
Jesus promised he would not leave us alone but would send us the Spirit of truth to give us the courage and power to testify to the world.
Brief intercessory prayers may be added in a fitting place.
HYMN OF THE DAY God’s Holy Spirit Came Christian Worship 479
SERMON
John 15:26-27; 16:4-11
Jesus is Gone, but the Spirit is Here!
HYMN OF CONFESSION We All Believe in One True God
Worship 940
The bolded words come from Luther’s Explanation to the Third Article of the Apostles’ Creed as found in the Small Catechism. They serve as a reminder of the work of the Holy Spirit and a confession of our faith in Him.
Praise to you, Holy Spirit! We worship you as the Lord and adore you as the giver of life. As you were present at the beginning of the world to give life to all created things and as you enlightened and equipped the disciples on the Day of Pentecost by the baptism of fire, so by the baptism of water with the Word you made the light of faith shine in our hearts to know Jesus as our Lord. We confess:
I believe that I cannot by my own thinking or choosing believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to him. But the Holy Spirit has called me by the gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. In the same way he calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian Church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith.
Holy Spirit, Spirit of truth and source of all spiritual gifts, stand by us in the weakness of our sinful nature. Grant us a right understanding of the truths that Jesus taught. Give us strength to endure with patience whatever afflictions God may send into our lives. Help us, intercede for us, and train us that we may pray to the Father with boldness and confidence. Preserve us by the power of your Word in our most holy faith as members of the Church, the body of Jesus.
In this Christian Church he daily and fully forgives all sins to me and all believers.
Holy Spirit, you comfort and counsel us in every need. In dark and difficult days strengthen our feeble hands, steady our weak knees, and encourage our fearful hearts. Support us with the promise that in your final creative act you will raise up our bodies so that together with all believers we may see and enjoy the glorious return of Jesus Christ.
On the Last Day he will raise me and all the dead and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ. This is most certainly true. Amen.
Hear us, Lord, as we pray in silence.
Silent prayer
Come, Holy Spirit, renew our hearts
And kindle in us the fire of your love. Amen.
Members of Grace respond to their Savior’s love with offerings that are given joyfully, generously, regularly, and in a way that is proportionate to how the Lord has blessed them. Their cheerful gifts support the mission and ministry of our congregation. If you are a guest today, please know that we do not expect you to contribute to our congregation’s work. However, if you would like to give an offering to the Lord in response to his love to you, we are happy to receive it and put it to work in God’s kingdom. If you prefer, use your smart phone to give online by scanning this QR code:
Please fill out the Friendship Register located in the red folder at the end of the row and pass it along. Thank you!

The words to this song are printed below for your silent meditation:
Please stand
Holy Spirit, living Breath of God, breathe new life into my willing soul; bring the presence of the Risen Lord, to renew my heart and make me whole. Cause your Word to come alive in me; give me faith for what I cannot see. Give me passion for your purity; Holy Spirit breathe new life in me.
The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.
It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who on this day kept his promise and poured out the Holy Spirit to empower his Church to proclaim the gospel in all the world. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song:
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY—Sanctus
Please join in singing after a brief introduction:
Christian Worship 944
We give thanks to you, O God, through your dear Son, Jesus Christ, whom you sent to be our Savior, our Redeemer, and the messenger of your grace. Through him you made all things; in him you are well pleased. He is the incarnate Word, conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. To fulfill your promises, he stretched out his hands on the cross and released from eternal death all who believe in you.
As we remember Jesus’ death and resurrection, we thank you that you have gathered us together to receive your Son’s body and blood. Send us your Spirit, unite us as one, and strengthen our faith so that we may praise you in your Son, Jesus Christ. Through him, we glorify and honor you, O God our Father, with the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my (+) body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my (+) blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
The peace of the Lord be with you always. Amen.
Matthew 6 and Luke 11 record how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. We use his example prayer as part of our public worship, trusting that he will hear and answer our prayers.
As he speaks the Words of Institution, the minister both proclaims the words of Jesus to the congregation and sets apart the bread and wine for this special use. The sign of the cross reminds us of Christ’s death.
Gluten-free communion wafers and grape juice are available for those who for health or medical reason require it. Please see page 16 for additional details.

The Bible teaches that the Lord’s Supper is a unique communion of Christ and the individual believer as well as a coming together of people who hold to the same beliefs. Because of these Scriptural truths, we practice Member Communion at Grace. Those who are confirmed members of Wisconsin Synod congregations (WELS) are invited to receive the Lord’s Supper with us.
If you are not a WELS member but have an interest in receiving Holy Communion, please speak with the pastor after church today or at another time. We are aware that there are a number of other teachings about Holy Communion, and we want it to be a blessing for you, so we would look forward to sharing with you what God says about this Sacrament.
PRAYER BEFORE COMMUNION (For private meditation)
Lord Jesus, you have invited me to come and receive your holy Sacrament. I believe that in the bread and wine you give me your true body and blood to eat and drink. Forgive my sins and nourish my faith through this precious meal. I long for the comfort that comes with your promises; I yearn for the assurance of your faithful love. Bless me now as I receive you by faith. Amen.
PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION (For private meditation)
Thank you, dear Savior, for nourishing my faith with the Sacrament of your body and blood. Lift my heart with your forgiveness, renew my confidence in your grace, empower my love for others, and lead me to long for the eternal banquet of heaven. Amen.

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his mercy endures forever.
Whenever we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
We give you thanks, O Lord, for the foretaste of the heavenly banquet you have given us in this Sacrament. Through this gift you have fed our faith, nourished our hope, and strengthened our love. By your Spirit, help us to live as your holy people until that day when you will receive us as your guests at the wedding supper of the Lamb, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
Psalm 106:1
The blessing of Aaron has been spoken over God’s people for over 3,500 years. The L said, “In this way they will put my name on [them], and I will bless them.” Numbers 6:27
The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and (+) give you peace.

We provide gluten-free communion wafers for those with wheat allergy, gluten-sensitivity, or celiac disease. These wafers are stored and handled separately to avoid cross-contamination. They are “bread” as Scripture requires and are consecrated along with the rest of the bread. For those requiring gluten-free wafers, please take one from the stand located at the front rail as you approach for communion. Simply hold it so that the pastor can see it at the time of distribution. Grape juice is available for those who for health or medical reason require it instead of wine. Please speak with a pastor about providing grape juice for you on future Sundays.
Today we are distributing Holy Communion in “tables.” The ushers will direct members forward by the side aisles. Groups of about ten will be guided toward the center aisle and will line up to receive the elements together. After each table communes, the pastor will offer a blessing and dismiss the group to return by the center aisle.
To aid in your personal preparation for Holy Communion, a list of Christian Questions can be found on pages 295-296 in the hymnal. These were prepared by Martin Luther for those intending to receive the Sacrament.
The flowers beautifying our altar this morning were given by Rick & Molly Street in celebration of their 10th wedding anniversary on May 17. Additional flowers are in loving memory of Jon & Sharon Guenther who are now at the throne of our Savior.
If you would like to provide flowers for the altar, please call (520-623-6633) or email (office@gracelutheransaz.org) the Grace Central Office to reserve a Sunday. Upcoming available Sundays include June 9, 16, 23, & 30. The cost for the 2 bouquets is $32.50. After the 10:00 AM service you may take the flowers home or leave them to be dropped off to one of our homebound members if a visit is being made.
Following the 10:00 AM service this morning, you are invited to join us in the courtyard and Fellowship Hall for drinks and snacks. We thank Beth & David Williams for hosting this morning. Upcoming available dates are June 9, 16, 23, & 30. Please sign up on the sheet in the Fellowship Hall.
Join us on Sundays for a look at Prayer and the Lord’s Prayer. We are working through a section of our Grow in Grace Class, which will give us an opportunity to learn and discuss much about what God has to say regarding prayer. If you have not made Sunday morning Bible study a part of your routine, this would be a great time to start! We meet at 9:00 AM in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall.
Grace Moments and Meditations daily devotional books are at either door to church and in the Fellowship Hall. A new Meditations book with devotions that begin June 2 is available. These are great tools to use for your daily Bible study!
Mission to the Children is providing a Spanish worship service here at Grace-Tucson today at 4:00 PM with a meal to follow in the Fellowship Hall. These services are held on the third Sunday of each month at the same time. If you are interested in worshiping with Mexican refugees or in Spanish, please join us!
Pastor Tim and Katie Patoka say a big "thank you" to everyone at Grace! Thanks for the memories we made, the ministry we did together, and all your love and assistance in saying farewell to us. We pray the Lord bless you and keep you until we meet again. If you would like to contact Pastor Patoka, call/text him at 540-623-1149 or email him at timpatoka@gmail.com.
Join us on Wednesdays for our study of Church History. We are learning about the early years of the WELS. Even if you haven’t attended this class before, this is an excellent time to join. We study together in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall at 10:00 AM and repeat the same material at 7:00 PM. Join us for whichever time fits your schedule best!
Grace will be receiving a vicar (a pastoral intern) for a year beginning this summer. The vicar will work most closely with Pastor Heiman at our Sahuarita site. We look forward to learning more when the vicars are assigned to their supervising pastors in a special service at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary this Wednesday, May 22, at 5:00 PM (Arizona time). The service can be viewed at https:// vimeo.com/event/4194508.
Interested in membership at Grace, receiving the Lord’s Supper, or just knowing more about God?
Our Grow in Grace classes are for these very things! Pastor Koehler recently began teaching a series of these classes on Wednesdays at 6:30 PM in the church office conference room. If you would like to attend, you may let him know today, call the church office (520-623-6633), or simply come on Wednesday evening. Everything you need for the class will be provided. Try it out for one class if you’d like. There is no obligation or expectation for you to continue if it’s not for you.
A new study on the Twelve Apostles began recently. What do we know about the 12 men Jesus chose to follow him and then sent out to share the gospel after his ascension into heaven? What does the Bible say? What do historical accounts tell us about them? Get to know “The 12” as you never have before, and learn valuable lessons about your life of following Jesus. Pastor Koehler will lead this study on Thursday mornings at 9:00 AM in the Fellowship Hall. Make plans to join him, and invite a friend to join you!
After the outpouring of positive feedback regarding the tall banners used for our Good Friday service, the Sanctuary Committee has moved forward with purchasing several additional sets of tall banners. We thank Chuck & Beth Johnson and Pastor & Julyd Hallemeyer for sponsoring the Pentecost banners used today. The committee is now working on selecting banners for Reformation, Christmas, Easter, and other festivals. Please see the bulletin board near the kitchen in the Fellowship Hall for more information about this project and for the latest updates. You are always welcome to share your thoughts on this and other items with the committee members: Justin Harris (chairman), Jim and Deb Bakken, Greg Grorud, Beth Kassulke, Paul Kassulke, and Pastor Koehler.
The Lutheran Pioneer/Ranger program here at Grace has consolidated their camping equipment. Extra equipment is available in the church basement for free. Donations to the program are appreciated and can be made with a check noting “Pioneer/Ranger Program” or cash in an envelope marked the same. This will help defray the cost for Grace members who are attending the Ranger hike in June along with future events. Questions can be directed to Teri or Bryan Guenther.
