WELCOME OPENING HYMN—Thy Strong Word Christian Worship 630
The choir will sing stanzas 1 and 4 today. Please join in singing stanzas 2, 3, 5, and 6.
Please stand INVOCATION
Minister: In the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit.
Congregation: Amen.
CONFESSION OF SINS
If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
Let us confess our sins to the Lord.
Holy God, gracious Father, I am sinful by nature and have sinned against you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved others as I should. I deserve your punishment both now and forever. But Jesus, my Savior, paid for my sins with his innocent suffering and death.
Trusting in him, I pray: God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
Silence for meditation and reflection
Our gracious Father in heaven has been merciful to us. He sent his only Son, Jesus Christ, who gave his life as the atoning sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the (+) Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

This morning, we are using The Service Setting Three from the hymnal (p. 188 and following) as our order of worship.
1 John 1:8-9
“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” James 5:16
Christ gave the authority to forgive the sins of penitent sinners to his church: “Whenever you forgive people’s sins, they are forgiven.”
John 20:23

Kyrie is the Greek word for Lord. The expression “Lord, have mercy” is one of the oldest worship responses in the Christian Church. The minister will sing the italicized words. The congregation responds by singing “Lord, have mercy” and with the final “Amen. Amen.”
Minister: In peace let us pray to the Lord.
Congregation:
For the peace from above and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord.
For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord.
For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord.
Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.

PRAYER OF THE DAY
The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Let us pray.
Almighty God, you sent your one and only Son as the Word of life for our eyes to see and our ears to hear. Help us believe what the Scriptures proclaim about him and do the things that are pleasing in your sight; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
FIRST READING Exodus 19:1-8
1 In the third month after the Israelites had left the land of Egypt, on that same day of the month, they came to the Wilderness of Sinai. 2 After they set out from Rephidim and came to the Wilderness of Sinai, they camped in the wilderness. Israel camped there in front of the mountain.
3 Moses went up to God, and the L called to him from the mountain, “This is what you are to say to the house of Jacob and to tell the people of Israel: 4 ‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. 5 Now if you will carefully listen to my voice and keep my covenant, then you will be my special treasure out of all the nations, although the entire earth is mine.
6 You will be my kingdom of priests and my holy nation.’ These are the words that you are to speak to the Israelites.”
7 Moses went and summoned the elders of the people, and he set before them all these words that the L had commanded him. 8 All the people answered together, “Everything that the L has said, we will do.”
The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
God made Israel, a nation of slaves, his special people. He wanted Israel to be the kingdom of priests he had called them to be.

+ THE WORD +
Please be seated
The children are excused to the balcony. They will return to their seats following their song.
The words of this anthem were inspired by Matthew 5:13-16 and John 1:5-7.
WORSHIP CHOIR AND CHILDREN Let It Shine!
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine! This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine!
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine, let it shine, let it shine, let it shine!
You are the light to the world, a city on a hill shining in the night for all to see. So let your light brightly shine that others may see our God who reigns in majesty. God is light, and in Him is no darkness. God is light, the pure and holy Word. If we walk in the light, as God is in the light, we shall live eternally.
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine, let it shine, let it shine, let it shine!
You are the salt of the earth, redeemed by Christ’s great love. Come and share God’s grace for all to see. A healing balm for the sick, a vessel of change for those who long to be set free, set free.
God is light, and in Him is no darkness. God is light, the pure and holy Word. If we walk in the light, as God is in the light, we shall live eternally. This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine! Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine!
St. Peter encourages us to be what God has declared us to be: members of a royal priesthood, citizens of a holy nation.
SECOND READING
1 Peter 2:9-12
9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, the people who are God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
10 At one time you were not a people, but now you are the people of God. At one time you were not shown mercy, but now you have been shown mercy.
11 Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and temporary residents in the world, to abstain from the desires of the sinful flesh, which war against your soul. 12 Live an honorable life among the Gentiles so that even though they slander you as evildoers, when they observe your noble deeds, they may glorify God on the day he visits us.
The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Matthew 5:16
Congregation:
Choir: Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Refrain (ALL)
GOSPEL Matthew 5:13-20
13 “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its flavor, how will it become salty again? Then it is no good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled on by people. 14 You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 People do not light a lamp and put it under a basket. No, they put it on a stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 In the same way let your light shine in people’s presence, so that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy them but to fulfill them. 18 Amen I tell you: Until heaven and earth pass away, not even the smallest letter, or even part of a letter, will in any way pass away from the Law until everything is fulfilled. 19 So whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever practices and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 Indeed I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and experts in the law, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”
The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise be to you, O Christ.
The Gospel Acclamation points toward the words of the Gospel. Please join in singing the refrains. The choir will sing the italicized verse. Jesus declares that his disciples are blessings to his dark, decaying world. He calls us to be what he says we are.

CONFESSION OF FAITH
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Please be seated

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God and Mary’s Son, in the fullness of time you came into our world to save us from sin and death.
You ushered in the day of grace so long foretold.
Beloved Son of the Father, revered by the Magi, baptized by John, you came preaching and teaching, healing and comforting, forgiving and encouraging: You brought the light of life to those walking in darkness, and the joy of salvation to those doomed to death.
Prince of peace, shine like a beacon for us and the people of our world. Let the good news of salvation be heard in the remotest corners of the earth. Open our own lips to speak your name to those around us who still live without faith or hope:
Arouse us and our missionaries to flood the world with the light of your gospel.
Lord of the Church, let your peace rule our hearts that we may use our gifts to serve you and each other in willing gratitude and joy. Watch over our loved ones near and far, that they may remember your love and rejoice in your salvation. Strengthen the faith of the sick and the disheartened. Give hope to those in despair and comfort those who mourn.
Be gracious to all and lead us to reflect your love in everything we say and do.
Hear us, Lord, as we pray in silence.
Silent prayer
Finally, bring us and all your believers to the heavenly home where we will stand in the full light of your glory and with all your saints and angels sing the everlasting song of triumph.
Amen.
Brief intercessory prayers may be added in a fitting place.

HYMN
CLOSING PRAYER
Blessed Lord, you have given us your Holy Scriptures for our learning. May we so hear them, read, learn, and take them to heart that, being strengthened and comforted by your holy Word, we may cling to the blessed hope of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.
LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
BLESSING
The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and (+) give you peace.
Amen.

The choir will sing stanza 1. Please join in singing the remaining stanzas.
Matthew 6 and Luke 11 record how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. We use his example prayer as part of our public worship, trusting that he will hear and answer our prayers. The blessing of Aaron has been spoken over God’s people for over 3,500 years. The L said, “In this way they will put my name on [them], and I will bless them.” Numbers 6:27 POSTLUDE MUSIC:

Sunday Morning Bible Study
“I Don’t Need the Bible or Worship to Have a Relationship With God.” “God Doesn’t Judge Anyone, and Neither Should You.” These and other popular statements might sound good, but do they really fit with what the Bible says? This study will help us respond to false teachings about God and to defend what the Bible teaches. Now would be an excellent time to make this study a part of your Sunday routine! Please join us at 9:00 AM in the Fellowship Hall.
Offering Envelope Delays
Many Grace members and friends receive a monthly mailing of offering envelopes that they use for their giving to support the ministry of our congregation. Unfortunately, we have learned the February envelopes were unable to be mailed out. The company that mails our envelopes has been experiencing difficulties, and they are working hard to handle the situation. They deeply apologize for this inconvenience and expect to be back on track with the March envelopes.
In the meantime, an offering placed in any envelope marked with your name and envelope number will be recorded. If needed, you will find envelopes to use at each of the church doors.
You may also contribute your offerings through online giving, accessed through our church website, www.GraceLutheranSAZ.org. Members and friends who set up automatic giving do not need to rely on the monthly envelope mailing, but are welcome to receive them for any additional or special gifts. If you have any questions, please contact the Grace Central Office (520-623-6633, office@gracelutheransaz.org) or our Financial Manager (finance@gracelutheransaz.org).
Divine Call Returned
Pastor Patoka, after prayerful consideration and deliberation, has declined the call to serve at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Menomonie, WI. He will continue to serve in his role as one of the pastors here at Grace in Southern Arizona. He would like to thank all those who shared their thoughts with him during the deliberation and who prayed for him and his family. He is also grateful that this time of deliberation allowed for many beneficial conversations about the gospel ministry we all share. Please continue to pray for our congregation and the many ways we proclaim forgiveness and salvation in Jesus to our communities!
Monday Evening Service
An evening worship service is held at Grace-Sahuarita on Monday evenings at 6:00 PM, and they are scheduled to continue through the spring. This service provides another alternative for those who may not be able to worship on Sunday. Members who regularly worship at any Grace sites are welcome to make use of this weeknight service.

Church History Bible Study: Wednesday
Join us on Wednesdays for our study of Church History. We are currently studying the church during the French Revolution. Even if you haven’t attended this class before, feel free to join us this week! We study together in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall at 10:00 AM and repeat the same material at 7:00 PM. Join us for whichever time fits your schedule best! This coming Wednesday, February 16, is our last class before we break for Lenten Midweek services. Classes will then resume on April 19.
Women’s Bible Study
The Thursday morning Women’s Bible Study here at Grace-Tucson has been unable to meet since the beginning of the year due to Pastor Koehler’s health. As he continues to deal with health concerns that are taking some time to resolve, he feels that it is best to plan for classes to begin again on Thursday, March 2. He looks forward to resuming the Prepared to Answer Bible Study at that time. He also appreciates your thoughts and prayers for patience and healing according to God’s good will.
Grow in Grace Class
Would you like to learn more about our Savior, about the Bible that tells us about him, and about what Grace Lutheran Church believes and teaches? Our congregation offers a series of Bible-based lessons called Grow in Grace. Grow in Grace also serves as our membership class for those who may be interested in joining the church. If you would be interested in scheduling a Grow in Grace Class, please speak to one of the Pastors, or register your interest at GraceLutheranSAZ.org/GIG.
Informational Meeting: Saturday
A small group of WELS members in Tucson have been considering the possibility of opening a Lutheran high school in Tucson. Currently, the closest WELS high school is Arizona Lutheran Academy (ALA) in Phoenix. This “Feasibility Committee” recently shared its findings with the pastors in this area. Since the pastors do not act independently of their congregations, they agreed that the Committee should share its report with the Tucson congregation members and leaders. The WELS churches in Tucson are scheduling opportunities to hear directly from some of the committee members. Anyone interested in learning more about the work of the committee and their findings is invited to join us at Grace-Tucson this Saturday, February 18, at 10:30 AM. We do not anticipate making any decisions at this meeting but would have the opportunity to ask questions and to consider the Committee's recommendations.
TCM Horseback Riding: Saturday
Tucson Campus Ministry (TCM) is organizing guided horseback riding for college-aged adults on the afternoon of Saturday, February 18. We will ride for 45 minutes in the gorgeous countryside around Vail. The cost for this event will be covered by TCM. If you are interested in coming, let Campus Pastor Tim know (welstcm@welstcm.com). Space is limited and additional information will be shared with our group of TCM cowboys and cowgirls.

Chupala Lunch: February 19
Grace's high school youth group, the Lifeliners, invites you to join them following the 10:00 AM worship service next Sunday, February 19, here at Grace-Tucson for their annual Chupala Lunch. Chupala is a delicious chicken and bean dish with southwestern spices that is served with tortillas or corn chips and toppings (lettuce, tomatoes, olives, cheese, etc.). The lunch after church is a great time to enjoy some fellowship.
The Chupala Lunch is also one of the ways that the Lifeliners raise funds for their activities. Donations are appreciated (checks may be made out to Grace), but you are welcome to eat even if you are unable to contribute. The funding for this event is sponsored by a Thrivent Action Team.
Midweek Lenten Services
Wednesday midweek services are being held at Grace-Benson, Grace-Sahuarita, and GraceTucson beginning with Ash Wednesday on February 22 and continuing through March 29.
The theme of our midweek services is “His Final Steps.” This series ponders the significance of the people and places on Jesus’ final steps to the cross and, three days later, his first steps from the tomb. The sermons and service themes will rotate among the various sites on the Wednesdays in March, so worshipers who attend more than one site could hear a sermon repeated. The Ash Wednesday services will all follow the theme “His Final Steps Led to a Tomb” and will include Holy Communion.
