G E L C T , A N 23, 2025

Our mission at Grace is to teach the inspired and inerrant Word of God, to proclaim that Jesus Christ is the crucified and risen Savior of the world, and to nurture believers for lives of Christian service.
Check out the GRACE WEBSITE at GraceLutheranSAZ.org
We are very pleased that you have joined us for worship today! We pray that this time will be a blessing for you as God comes to you with his Word and promises and as you offer him your thanks and praise.
The order of worship we will follow is printed in this worship folder for you to follow along and participate. You’ll notice that the service is a dialogue between God and us, his people. The pastor speaks to God along with the congregation and also speaks the Word of God to the people. LARGE PRINT worship folders are available at the entrances for those who desire them.
Today we are using elements from the Christian Worship (2021) hymnal. You will find these blue worship books in the hymnal racks in each pew. You will be asked to open the hymnal to participate in parts of the service today. A vocalist will aid in our singing and will be recorded for our audio disks and video livestreaming.
There is no cost to park in our parking lot during Sunday morning worship services. If you receive a citation by mistake, please let our office staff know so it can be cleared.
“Every why hath a wherefore.” That was Shakespeare’s poetic way of saying that very little happens by chance. Generally there is an agent behind an action. There is cause and effect. And to navigate life well, it is vital we understand both. We are nearing the end of the Church Year. This past year, we have reviewed Jesus’ life and teaching. The Scripture readings in these final weeks recall some of the major themes that are woven throughout the Church Year. In this final series we will be looking at those themes with the understanding that “every why hath a wherefore.” We conclude the year by talking about cause and effect in God’s kingdom.
Our worship has followed this path:
All Saints’ Day
Sainthood/Stamina
Twenty-Second Sunday after Pentecost Grace/Joy
Twenty-Third Sunday after Pentecost Judgment/Peace
Last Sunday of the Church Year
Scripture/Anticipation
The Church has marked the passing of yet another Church Year, waiting for its Lord to return. How long will we have to wait and watch for Jesus to return? We do not know. Jesus said he would return soon. However, the definition of “soon” for the One who has no beginning or end will naturally differ from ours. Whenever Jesus returns, it will take us by surprise. So, how do believers avoid growing lethargic? How do we remain ready and watchful for Christ’s return? Our Savior points us to his Scriptures.
The promises Jesus has made us this past year promises that give us comfort and hope and purpose were not merely spoken. Jesus ensured those promises were written down in Scripture. As we see in Scripture all the promises that Christ has fulfilled, there is discernable effect. The Spirit creates within us an eager anticipation regarding the Scriptural promises that are as-of-yet unfilled. While we cannot be certain when the day of fulfillment will come, we are completely confident of what that day will bring. No matter how many years we must mark, we watch with eager anticipation, and we pray, “Amen! Come, Lord Jesus” (Revelation 22:20).

Minister: In the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit.
Congregation: Amen.
If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
Let us confess our sins to the Lord.
Holy God, gracious Father, I am sinful by nature and have sinned against you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved others as I should. I deserve your punishment both now and forever. But Jesus, my Savior, paid for my sins with his innocent suffering and death. Trusting in him, I pray: God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
Silence for meditation and reflection
Our gracious Father in heaven has been merciful to us. He sent his only Son, Jesus Christ, who gave his life as the atoning sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the (+) Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Linda Moeller
The words of the invocation remind us that the God we meet and worship is the true and triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
1 John 1:8-9
“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” James 5:16
Christ gave the authority to forgive the sins of penitent sinners to his church: “Whenever you forgive people’s sins, they are forgiven.” John 20:23
Mark 10:47
Kyrie is the Greek word for Lord. The expression “Lord, have mercy” is one of the oldest worship responses in the Christian Church.
In peace let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For the peace from above and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. Amen.
This arrangement of “Glory to God” comes from The Service Setting 5, which was newly composed in 2023. We have been using elements of this service setting over the past several weeks. Today, the congregation is invited to sing this entire song. “Glory to God” has been a Christian song of worship since the fourth century.

The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Let us pray.
Eternal God, merciful Father, you have appointed your Son as judge of the living and the dead. Enable us to wait for the day of his return with our eyes fixed on the kingdom prepared for your people from the foundation of the world; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.

1The threatening oracle which the prophet Habakkuk saw.
Habakkuk 1:1-3; 2:1-4
2 How long, L , must I cry for help, but you do not listen? I call out to you, “Violence!” but you do not save!
3 Why do you cause me to see injustice? Why do you overlook misery?
Devastation and violence confront me. There is strife, and tensions rise.
1I will stand at my watch post and station myself on the city wall. I will look to see what he will say to me, and what answer he will give to my complaint.
2Then the L answered me. He said:
Record the vision and write it plainly on tablets so that a herald may run with it.
3Indeed, the vision is waiting for the appointed time. It longs for fulfillment and will not prove false. If it seems slow in coming, wait for it, because it will certainly come and will not be delayed.
4Look, his soul is puffed up and is not righteous within him but the righteous one will live by his faith.
The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
The L instructs the prophet Habakkuk to write down what he was about to hear God say. That revelation empowered God’s people to anticipate God’s deliverance.
Christ is coming soon. In the meantime, in eager anticipation, we hold onto and make known what God has revealed in his Word.
By faith we see the hand of God in the light of creation’s grand design, in the lives of those who prove his faithfulness, who walk by faith and not by sight.
By faith our fathers roamed the earth with the pow’r of his promise in their hearts, of a holy city built by God’s own hand, a place where peace and justice reign.
We will stand as children of the promise; we will fix our eyes on him, our soul’s reward. Till the race is finished and the work is done, we’ll walk by faith and not by sight.
By faith the prophets saw a day when the longed-for Messiah would appear with the pow’r to break the chains of sin and death and rise triumphant from the grave.
By faith the church was called to go in the pow’r of the Spirit to the lost to deliver captives and to preach good news in ev’ry corner of the earth.
We will stand as children of the promise; we will fix our eyes on him, our soul’s reward. Till the race is finished and the work is done, we’ll walk by faith and not by sight.
By faith this mountain shall be moved and the pow’r of the gospel shall prevail, for we know in Christ all things are possible for all who call upon his name.
We will stand as children of the promise; we will fix our eyes on him, our soul’s reward. Till the race is finished and the work is done, we’ll walk by faith and not by sight.

SECOND READING
6The angel said to me, “These words are faithful and true. The Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, sent his angel to show his servants what must soon take place.”
7“And look: I am coming soon! Blessed is the one who holds on to the words of the prophecy of this book.”
22:6–13
8I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. When I heard and saw them, I bowed down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed me these things. 9But he said to me, “Do not do it! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers the prophets, and also with those who hold on to the words of this book. Worship God!”
10The angel also said to me:
Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, because the time is near.
11 Let the one who is unjust continue to be unjust.
Let the one who is filthy continue to be filthy.
Let the one who is just continue to do what is just.
Let the one who is holy continue to be holy.
12Look, I am coming soon and my reward is with me, to repay each one according to what he has done. 13I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.
The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
Refrain (ALL):
Matthew 24:42

Choir: Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.
Refrain (ALL)
Tune: © 2023 Michael D. Schultz and Kevin P. Becker, admin. Northwestern Publishing House.
We stand out of respect for the words of Christ, our King.
The Gospel Acclamation points toward the words of the Gospel.
Though we cannot know when Jesus will return, we can be certain what will happen when he does. So, we watch and wait with anticipation.
35“Be dressed, ready for service, and keep your lamps burning. 36Be like people waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. 37Blessed are those servants, whom the master will find watching when he comes. Amen I tell you: He will dress himself and have them recline at the table, and he will come and serve them. 38Even if he comes in the second or third watch, they will be blessed if he finds them alert.
39But know this: If the master of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. 40You also be ready, because the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you are not expecting him.”
The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to you, O Christ.

SERMON Revelation 22:6-13 God’s Written Word Prepares Us for the Day that is Coming Soon
Please stand
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
Please be seated
Eternal and gracious Father, today we end another year of grace. Once again the Holy Spirit has nourished and strengthened our faith as we reviewed the words and works of Jesus recorded in the Gospels. We have rejoiced to hear that you kept the promises you made to your ancient people. We were encouraged as we remembered how you empowered your followers to proclaim the good news in their world.
Work in us every day to believe the truths of your Word and apply them in our lives.
We are aware that we live in dangerous times as Satan and his forces of evil assault your people again and again. Give us wisdom to discern teachings that subtly deny the Scriptures. Provide courage to stand against the attacks of godless opponents. Strengthen our resolve to confess the truth and then to speak the truth in love.
Work in us every day to be watchful and cautious as we live in our world.
The Apostles’ Creed developed in the Early Christian Church as a personal confession of faith. It is so named because it confesses the faith taught by the Apostles of Jesus. Brief intercessory prayers may be added in a fitting place.
Help us take to heart that your Son, our Lord Jesus, is coming again to judge the living and the dead. Since the day of his return is unknown to us, lead us to note the signs that signal the end of time. Spare us from fear as trouble and woe increase, and fill us with hope as we long for that great day.
Work in us every day to be ready for the moment of his coming.
Fill us with concern for family members and friends who are not taking seriously their need for Jesus and his forgiveness. Provide opportunities to reach out to them with patient persistence and to lovingly lead them to your Word and sacraments. Make us generous with our offerings so that others can go in our place to proclaim the good news.
Work in us every day to witness to Christ and his love for sinners.
Lead us to see our Savior’s face in the faces of the poor and hungry, the lonely and forgotten, the oppressed and imprisoned, and move to support them whenever we can. Empower our faith to be lights in the world so that people may see our good works and glorify you and your Son.
Work in us every day to imitate your love for the lost, the least, and the last.
If you call us to glory before the final day comes, carry our souls to heaven where we will await the resurrection of our bodies. Comfort those who may grieve over losing us and point them to the day when they will join us at the marriage feast of the Lamb.
Work in us every day so that we are ready whenever you call us home.
Hear us, Lord, as we pray in silence.
Silent prayer
Fill us with hope and joy as we await your Son’s return. Cause us to enjoy your earthly blessings in light of your eternal glories and to realize that heaven is really our home. Lead us to long for the splendor of Paradise where you will wipe away all tears from our eyes.
Work in us every day as we listen for the sound of the final trumpet. Amen.
Members of Grace respond to their Savior’s love with offerings that are given joyfully, generously, regularly, and in a way that is proportionate to how the Lord has blessed them. Their cheerful gifts support the mission and ministry of our congregation. If you are a guest today, please know that we do not expect you to contribute to our congregation’s work. However, if you would like to give an offering to the Lord in response to his love to you, we are happy to receive it and put it to work in God’s kingdom. If you prefer, use your smart phone to give online by scanning this QR code:
Please fill out the Friendship Register located in the red folder at the end of the row and pass it along. Thank you!

Almighty God, we thank you for teaching us the things you want us to believe and do. Help us by your Holy Spirit to keep your Word in pure hearts that we may be strengthened in faith, guided in holiness, and comforted in life and in death, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and (+) give you peace. Amen.
Matthew 6 and Luke 11 record how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. We use his example prayer as part of our public worship, trusting that he will hear and answer our prayers.

Please see the students in the courtyard after services to purchase yours.
At Bible study tonight we will have with us Dr. Ben Kohls from Bethany Lutheran College in Minnesota. He will speak to us on Wellness and Resilience - something we all need to learn a bit about. Martin Luther College (MLC), our WELS college of ministry, has published a series of 25 devotions for Advent meant to be used daily from December 1 to 25. These devotions are entitled “All Things New.” As we gather around the manger this year, we’ll ponder Jesus’ words in Revelation 21:5, “I am making everything new!” You may request that the devotions be emailed to you daily or view the entire booklet at: mlc-wels.edu/publications/seasonal-devotions/. There are paper copies available at the church doors and in the Fellowship Hall.
Advent is a time of hopeful repentance as we prepare to celebrate Christmas. Join us on three Wednesdays, December 3, 10, & 17 for special midweek Advent worship services. Our theme for these services is “Bible Songs of Christmas” as we consider songs from the Bible that were sung to announce Christ’s birth. Three weekly themes will rotate through the sites hosting our midweek services, so you are encouraged to pick one site at which to worship for these services.

Grace-Sahuarita 4:00 & 6:00 PM
Grace-Tucson 10:00 AM & 7:00 PM
You are also invited to join us for lunch following the service at Grace-Benson or supper at 5:00 PM at Grace-Sahuarita and 6:00 PM at Grace-Tucson.

Please sign up on the sheet in the Fellowship Hall. A Thrivent grant will be used for initial expenses and a free-will offering will be collected at each meal.
Begin the Christmas season on Friday, December 5, with your fellow Grace members, our friends from the Grace-Tucson neighborhood, and the unchurched friends and family you invite to Carols in the Courtyard! This is both a fellowship event for Grace members from ALL sites and an outreach event. Sing along with your favorite Christmas songs, enjoy some hot chocolate and homemade Christmas cookies and treats, and spend a fun evening in our decorated courtyard! We hope you can join us between 6:00 and 8:30 PM for all or just some of the evening. Invitation postcards for you to use are available at both church doors and in the Fellowship Hall.
As mentioned in the Carols in the Courtyard announcement, we will be serving homemade Christmas cookies and treats at Carols in the Courtyard. Could you contribute a couple dozen? Please indicate your willingness on the sign up sheet on the table in the Fellowship Hall. No storebought treats or cookies please only homemade for this event!
We would like to get invitations to Carols in the Courtyard (and our Christmas Services) out to the neighborhoods surrounding Grace-Tucson. Instead of having one event to hang invitations door-todoor, we are looking for individuals, couples, or families (or any small group) to find a time between November 19 and December 1 to leave door-hanger invitations in a particular neighborhood. If you live within about a ten-minute drive from church, this could be your neighborhood, or we’ll help determine an area to target. If you can help with this, please speak with Pastor Kassulke or Paul Kassulke as soon as possible!
Mission to the Children is once again holding a toy and hygiene drive. Early bird registration is available until December 31.

Grace Lutheran Church is a member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS), a group of nearly 400,000 men, women, and children in nearly 1,300 congregations across the United States and Canada united by a common faith in Christ's saving love. We are committed to a common calling encouraging each other in our faith and sharing God's gift of a Savior with the rest of the world.
