THE TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

Our mission at Grace is to teach the inspired and inerrant Word of God, to proclaim that Jesus Christ is the crucified and risen Savior of the world, and to nurture believers for lives of Christian service.
Check out the GRACE WEBSITE at GraceLutheranSAZ.org
We are very pleased that you have joined us for worship today! We pray that this time will be a blessing for you as God comes to you with his Word and promises, and as you offer him your thanks and praise.
The order of worship we will follow is printed in this worship folder for you to follow along and participate. You’ll notice that the service is a dialogue between God and us, his people. The pastor speaks to God along with the congregation and also speaks the Word of God to the people. LARGE PRINT worship folders are available at the entrances for those who desire them.
Today we are using elements from the Christian Worship (2021) hymnal. You will find these blue worship books in the hymnal racks in each pew. You will be asked to open the hymnal to participate in parts of the service today. We hope this will help our members and friends become better acquainted with these new books. A vocalist will aid in our singing and will be recorded for our audio disks and video live streaming.
Our world is full of victims of abuse, violence, and oppression. In many cases, this evil goes unnoticed or unpunished. Injustice can drive victims in two possible directions. They can be filled with despair over the unfairness of the situation. Or they can be filled with hatred and a desire for revenge. While Christians wait for Christ's return on the Last Day, they are by no means the only ones who suffer at the hands of others. They are, however, often included among them. Believers have always faced opposition from a world who rejects the one we believe in. When we suffer, what are our options? Do we throw up our hands in despair? Do we take matters into our own hands and seek vengeance? The certainty of the Last Day gives us a better option. We can leave justice up to the Judge. We can be confident that on the Last Day every wrong will be righted. We can look forward to the Last Day also known as Judgment Day because we are confident of where we stand with God through faith in Jesus Christ.
Please plan to join us next Sunday, November 20, for a special worship service of Word and song. The A capella Choir from Arizona Lutheran Academy will provide music in both services at Grace Tucson and ALA Campus Pastor Brad Bode will be our guest preacher. To express our thanks to the ALA choir, a door offering will be collected that day, which they will use to help defray their travel costs. (Arizona Lutheran Academy is our area WELS high school located in the Phoenix area. Their mission is to provide an exceptional education, while also preserving a Christ focused school culture, promoting spiritual growth and Christian service, and preparing life long disciples of Jesus Christ. Grace supports this high school as a member of its federation. Four Grace members are currently students at ALA, and Grace member Naomi Kassulke is a member of the A capella Choir.)
The choir will sing the verses of this hymn as well as the first refrain. Please join in singing the refrains after the second and third verses.
Minister: In the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit.
Congregation: Amen.
If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
Let us confess our sins to the Lord.
Holy God, gracious Father, I am sinful by nature and have sinned against you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved others as I should.
I deserve your punishment both now and forever. But Jesus, my Savior, paid for my sins with his innocent suffering and death. Trusting in him, I pray: God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
Our gracious Father in heaven has been merciful to us. He sent his only Son, Jesus Christ, who gave his life as the atoning sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the (+) Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
In Christ Alone
Stuart Townend & Keith Getty, arr. James Koerts Look, Ye Saints!
The Sight is Glorious William Owen, arr. Mark Hayes
The words of the invocation remind us that the God we meet and worship here is the true and triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. 1 John 1:8 9
“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” James 5:16
Christ gave the authority to forgive the sins of penitent sinners to his church: “Whenever you forgive people’s sins, they are forgiven.” John 20:23
Kyrie is the Greek word for Lord. The expression “Lord, have mercy” is one of the oldest worship responses in the Christian Church.
The minister will chant each printed line. Please join in singing the responses as indicated.
In peace let us pray to the Lord.
For the peace from above and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord.
For the peace of the whole world, for the well being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord.
For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord.
Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.
Please join with the choir in whatever parts of this song you are comfortable singing.
Christians praise God by proclaiming the great things he has done to accomplish our rescue from sin. “Glory to God in the Highest” has been a Christian song of worship since the fourth century.
This song continues on the next page.
The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray.
Lord God Almighty, so rule and govern our hearts and minds by your Holy Spirit that we may always look forward to the end of this present evil age and the day of your righteous judgment. Keep us steadfast in true and living faith, and present us at last holy and blameless before you; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.
Please be seated

Malachi 4:1-6
1 Look! The day is coming, burning like a blast furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble. The day that is coming will set them on fire, says the L of Armies, a day that will not leave behind a root or branch for them. 2 But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness will rise, and there will be healing in its wings. You will go out and jump around like calves from the stall. 3 You will trample the wicked. They will surely be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day when I take action, says the L of Armies.
4 Remember the law of my servant Moses, which I commanded to him at Horeb to serve as statutes and judgments over all Israel.
5 Look! I am going to send Elijah the prophet to you before the great and fearful day of the L comes! 6 He will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers. Otherwise, I will come and strike the land with complete destruction.
The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
On the Last Day, those who opposed God will be laid low, but all God’s people will be healed.
This setting of Psalm 98 is not found in the hymnal. Rather, it was included in the Christian Worship Psalter which was released in connection with the hymnal in 2021.
The choir will sing the first refrain and the verses. Please join in singing the remaining refrains.
Choir: All the ends of the earth have seen the power of God. All the ends of the earth have seen the power of God.
Sing to the L a new song, for he has done wondrous deeds; his right hand has won the vict’ry for him, his holy arm.
Choir: The L has made his salvation known, his justice revealed to all. Remembered his kindness and faithfulness to Israel.
Choir: All of the ends of earth have seen salvation by our God. Joyfully sing out, all you lands; break forth in song.
Choir: Sing to the L with harp and song, with trumpet and with horn. Sing in your joy before the King, the King, our L .

2 Thessalonians 1:5-10
5 This is evidence of God’s righteous verdict that resulted in your being counted worthy of God’s kingdom, for which you also suffer. 6 Certainly, it is right for God to repay trouble to those who trouble you, 7 and to give relief to you, who are troubled along with us. When the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his powerful angels, 8 he will exercise vengeance in flaming fire on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 Such people will receive a just penalty: eternal destruction away from the presence of the Lord and from his glorious strength, 10 on that day when he comes to be glorified among his saints, and to be marveled at among all those who have believed, because our testimony to you was believed.
The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The vocalist will sing the verse. Please join in singing the refrain before and after the verse.
Vocalist: Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor’s crown.

Revelation 2:10
God promises that on the Last Day all those who troubled his holy people will themselves be eternally troubled.
The Gospel Acclamation points toward the words of the Gospel.
Jesus tells us what the world will be like for believers before the Last Day.
5 As some were talking about the temple, how it was decorated with beautiful stones and offerings, Jesus said, 6 “These things that you see here the days will come when there will not be one stone left on another every one will be thrown down.”
7 They asked him, “Teacher, when will these things happen? And what is the sign that these things are about to happen?”
8 He said, “Watch out so that you are not deceived! For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he,’ and ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them. 9 Whenever you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be terrified, for these things must happen first, but the end will not be right then.”
10 Then he said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11 There will be great earthquakes, famines, and plagues in various places. There will be horrifying sights and great signs from heaven. 12 But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and will persecute you, handing you over to synagogues and prisons, bringing you before kings and governors for my name’s sake.
13 It will turn out to be your opportunity to testify. 14 So make up your minds not to prepare beforehand how to defend yourselves, 15 for I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict. 16 You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends. They will put some of you to death.
17 You will be hated by all people for my name’s sake. 18 But not a hair of your head will perish. 19 By patient endurance you will gain your lives.”
The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to you, O Christ.

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
Please be seated
Eternal and gracious Father, we thank you for your unending grace. Throughout the church year, the Holy Spirit has nourished and strengthened our faith as we reviewed the words and works of Jesus recorded in the Gospels. We have rejoiced to hear that you kept the promises you made to your ancient people. We were encouraged as we remembered how you empowered your followers to proclaim the good news in their world.
Work in us every day to believe the truths of your Word and apply them in our lives.
We are aware that we live in dangerous times as Satan and his forces of evil assault your people again and again. Give us wisdom to discern teachings that subtly deny the Scriptures. Provide courage to stand against the attacks of godless opponents. Strengthen our resolve to confess the truth and then to speak the truth in love. Work in us every day to be watchful and cautious as we live in our world.
Help us take to heart that your Son, our Lord Jesus, is coming again to judge the living and the dead. Since the day of his return is unknown to us, lead us to note the signs that signal the end of time. Spare us from fear as trouble and woe increase, and fill us with hope as we long for that great day.
Work in us every day to be ready for the moment of his coming.
The Apostles’ Creed developed in the Early Christian Church as a personal confession of faith. It is so named because it confesses the faith taught by the Apostles of Jesus. Brief intercessory prayers may be added in a fitting place.
Fill us with concern for family members and friends who are not taking seriously their need for Jesus and his forgiveness. Provide opportunities to reach out to them with patient persistence and to lovingly lead them to your Word and sacraments. Make us generous with our offerings so that others can go in our place to proclaim the good news.
Work in us every day to witness to Christ and his love for sinners.
Lead us to see our Savior’s face in the faces of the poor and hungry, the lonely and forgotten, the oppressed and imprisoned, and move to support them whenever we can. Empower our faith to be lights in the world so that people may see our good works and glorify you and your Son.
Work in us every day to imitate your love for the lost, the least, and the last.
If you call us to glory before the final day comes, carry our souls to heaven where we will await the resurrection of our bodies. Comfort those who may grieve over losing us and point them to the day when they will join us at the marriage feast of the Lamb.
Work in us every day so that we are ready whenever you call us home.
Hear us, Lord, as we pray in silence.
Fill us with hope and joy as we await your Son’s return. Cause us to enjoy your earthly blessings in light of your eternal glories and to realize that heaven is really our home. Lead us to long for the splendor of Paradise where you will wipe away all tears from our eyes.
Work in us every day as we listen for the sound of the final trumpet. Amen.
Members of Grace respond to their Savior’s love with offerings that are given joyfully, generously, regularly, and in a way that is proportionate to how the Lord has blessed them. Their cheerful gifts support the mission and ministry of our congregation. If you are a guest today, please know that we do not expect you to contribute to our congregation’s work. However, if you would like to give an offering to the Lord in response to his love to you, we are happy to receive it and put it to work in God’s kingdom. If you prefer, use your smart phone to give online by scanning this QR code:
Please fill out the Friendship Register located in the red folder at the end of the row and pass it along. Thank you!
The vocalist will sing stanza 1. Please join in singing the remainder of this hymn.
Please stand
Blessed Lord, you have given us your Holy Scriptures for our learning. May we so hear them, read, learn, and take them to heart that, being strengthened and comforted by your holy Word, we may cling to the blessed hope of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
Matthew 6 and Luke 11 record how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. We use his example prayer as part of our public worship, trusting that he will hear and answer our prayers.
The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and (+) give you peace.
Amen. Please be seated

Our study of “Prepared to Answer,” a book by Pastor Mark Paustian, a professor at Martin Luther College, tackles common questions and viewpoints that come from non Christians and even Christians on subjects like: “Do you really believe in miracles?” “But I’m pro choice.” “There are no moral absolutes.” “There are things I’ll never be able to forgive.” “With so many interpretations and denominations, who can say who is right?” “Why doesn’t he answer my prayers?” Each question is handled in just a handful of pages, so it is easy to jump into the study at any time, even if you can’t make it each week. The book is provided at no cost to you and is yours to keep. Invite a friend and join Pastor Koehler for what should be a very helpful study for us and for those we have discussions with about such things. The second call was to Mrs. Alison Moeri who currently serves at Little Lambs Learning Center at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Duluth, Minnesota. Pastor Kassulke was informed on November 10 that St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fort Atkinson, WI had voted to extend to him a Divine Call to serve as their outreach pastor. This means that he now holds two calls, one to Grace-Tucson and one to St. Paul’s in Fort Atkinson. In the coming weeks, he will be working to make a decision whether to accept the new Call and move his ministry to Wisconsin or to decline the Call and continue serving here. He will strive to make that decision with prayer and careful consideration where his particular gifts for ministry fit best.
Pastor Kassulke welcomes any input that the friends and members of Grace might wish to share with him. You can reach him by email at RevNPK@GraceLutheranSAZ.org or by phone at (520)2604453. He also appreciates prayers offered on behalf of him and his family during this deliberation as well as for both congregations.
