THE EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

OurÊmissionÊatÊGraceÊis to teach the inspired and inerrant Word of God, to proclaim that Jesus Christ is the crucified and risen Savior of the world, and to nurture believers for lives of Christian service.
Check out the GRACE WEBSITE at GraceLutheranSAZ.org
We are very pleased that you have joined us for worship today! We pray that this time will be a blessing for you as God comes to you with his Word and promises, and as you offer him your thanks and praise. The worship service is printed in this worship folder for you to follow along and participate. You’ll notice that the service is a dialogue between God and us, his people. The pastor speaks to God along with the congregation and also speaks the Word of God to the people. Those wishing to leave an offering can do so at the exit today or give online at www.GraceLutheranSAZ.org/give. (You can also scan the QR code to the right to access the online giving page.)
Today we are using elements from the new Christian Worship hymnal. You will find these blue worship books in the hymnal pocket in each row. You will be asked to open the hymnal to participate in parts of the service today. We hope this will help our members and friends become better acquainted with these new books.
We sometimes use the word faith very casually. “You got to have faith.” “Keep the faith.” “Make a leap of faith.” As Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem nears its conclusion, he begins to talk about faith in ways that are anything but casual. He says profound things about the power of faith: “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you” (Luke 17:6). Or “Your faith has made you well” (Luke 17:19). In thinking about his second coming, Christ wistfully wonders, “When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?” (Luke 18:8). Jesus’ words are serious and compelling. They force us to consider what true, saving faith is. They make us ask if we have such faith. But most of all, Jesus’ words move us to run to our God and beg him for more of it. Lord, increase our faith!
Gratitude is the appreciation and thankfulness we feel when someone does something kind to us or for us. There are two key factors that influence the intensity of gratitude. First, there is the deservedness factor. Say you do a favor for your neighbor, picking up his mail when he is out of town. A month later he does a favor for you, giving you a ride to the airport. You are grateful for his help, but not overwhelmingly so. You feel by doing a favor for him, you deserved his help to some degree. Second, there is the generosity factor. Say you do that favor for your neighbor, picking up his mail when he is out of town. When he gets back, he gives you a hundred dollar bill. You're stunned. “I can't accept. This is too generous.” Apply this to God. Consider the deservedness factor. What does God owe us? How deserving are we of his blessing? Consider the generosity factor. What has he done for us? What blessings has he given us now? What blessings has he promised us in eternity? As Jesus increases our faith, so that we accurately answer all those questions, we become more than grateful. We overflow with gratitude.

The words of the invocation remind us that the God we meet and worship here is the true and triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
1 John 1:8 9
“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” James 5:16
Christ gave the authority to forgive the sins of penitent sinners to his church: “Whenever you forgive people’s sins, they are forgiven.”
John 20:23
Our gracious Father in heaven has been merciful to us. He sent his only Son, Jesus Christ, who gave his life as the atoning sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the (+) Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Mark 10:47
Kyrie is the Greek word for Lord. The expression “Lord, have mercy” is one of the oldest worship responses in the Christian Church.
In peace let us pray to the Lord.
Lord,ÊhaveÊmercy.
For the peace from above and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord,ÊhaveÊmercy.
For the peace of the whole world, for the well being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord,ÊhaveÊmercy.
For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord,ÊhaveÊmercy.
Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. Amen.
Please
Christians praise God by proclaiming the great things he has done to accomplish our rescue from sin.
“Glory to God in the Highest” has been a Christian song of worship since the fourth century.
The Lord be with you.
Let us pray.
Grant, O merciful Lord, to your faithful people pardon and peace that they may be cleansed from all their sins and serve you with a quiet mind; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.

In faith, Noah expressed his gratitude for God’s undeserved generosity in preserving his life and the lives of his family.
FIRST READING
15 God spoke to Noah. He said, 16 “Go out of the ark you, your wife, your sons, and your sons’ wives with you. 17 Bring out with you every living thing of every sort that is with you, all flesh, including birds, livestock, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, so that they may swarm over the earth, and be fruitful and multiply on the earth.”
18 Noah went out with his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives along with him. 19 Every animal, every creeping thing, every bird, and whatever swarms on the earth went out of the ship, species by species.
20 Noah built an altar to the L and took from every clean animal and every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar. 21 The L smelled the pleasant aroma. The L said in his heart, “I will never again curse the soil anymore because of man, for the thoughts he forms in his heart are evil from his youth. Neither will I ever again strike every living thing, as I have done. 22 While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease. ”
The Word of the Lord.
ThanksÊbeÊtoÊGod.
8:15 22
Please opening your hymnal to sing this Psalm today. The Psalms are found in the opening portion of the hymnal.
The choir will sing stanzas 1 and 2. Please join in singing the last stanza.
Our gratitude for God’s generosity to us will naturally include a willingness to be generous with others.
SECOND READING 2 Corinthians 9:10 15
10 And he who provides seed to the sower and bread for food will provide and multiply your seed for sowing, and will increase the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be made rich in every way so that you may be generous in every way, which produces thanksgiving to God through us.
12 To be sure, the administration of this service is not only making up for what is lacking among the saints, but it is also overflowing in many prayers of thanksgiving to God. 13 By proving yourselves in this service, many people are glorifying God, as they see the obedience shown in your confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity shown in your sharing with them and all people. 14 At the same time as they pray for you, they also express their longing for you, because of the extraordinary measure of God’s grace given to you. 15 Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!
The Word of the Lord.
ThanksÊbeÊtoÊGod.
Alleluia. Give praise to the L , proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done. Alleluia.
The Gospel Acclamation points toward the words of the Gospel.

On another occasion, as Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem, he was passing along the border between Samaria and Galilee. 12 When he entered a certain village, ten men with leprosy met him. Standing at a distance, 13 they called out loudly, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”
14 When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” As they went away they were cleansed.
15 One of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, glorifying God with a loud voice. 16 He fell on his face at Jesus’ feet, thanking him. And he was a Samaritan. 17 Jesus responded, “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18 Was no one found to return and give glory to God except this foreigner?” 19 Then he said to him, “Get up and go your way. Your faith has saved you.”
The Gospel of the Lord. PraiseÊbeÊtoÊyou,ÊOÊChrist.
While the children are coming forward please greet your neighbor and fill out the Friendship Register located in the red folder in your row and pass it along. Thank you!
Ten men had faith that Jesus could save them from their leprosy. One man had the bold faith to throw himself at Jesus’ feet in gratitude.

Matthew 6 and Luke 11 record how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. We use his example prayer as part of our public worship, trusting that he will hear and answer our prayers.
During the singing of this hymn, children ages 1 8 are excused to attend Children’s Church in the CLC Building. Parents can pick up their children there following the service.
The Apostles’ Creed developed in the Early Christian Church as a personal confession of faith. It is so named because it confesses the faith taught by the Apostles of Jesus.

The blessing of Aaron has been spoken over God’s people for over 3,500 years. The L said, “In this way they will put my name on [them], and I will bless them.” Numbers 6:27
Blessed Lord, you have given us your Holy Scriptures for our learning. May we so hear them, read, learn, and take them to heart that, being strengthened and comforted by your holy Word, we may cling to the blessed hope of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.
The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and (+) give you peace.

Children ages 1-8 will be dismissed from our worship service today during the hymn before the sermon to attend Children’s Church. Parents, following worship, please pick your child up from the gymnasium in the CLC building.
We would like to have a record of both members and guests who are worshiping with us. Please sign the red Friendship Register book located along the center aisle in the hymnal rack.
Grace Moments and Meditations daily devotional books are on the Welcome Desk in the entryway. We hope you will make use of these books in your personal Bible Study.
“God just wants me to be happy.” “God helps those who help themselves.” These and other popular, positive, catchy statements might sound good, but do they really fit with what the Bible says? We are currently working through the Bible study, “10 Lies About God.” This study will help us respond to false teachings about God and to defend what the Bible teaches. Now would be an excellent time to make this study a part of your Sunday routine! Class is held at 9:00 AM in the CLC gymnasium.
Join us tonight at 7:00 PM in the Student Center at Grace Tucson for TCM’s Bible Study "The Tongue and Wisdom" from James 3:1-18. A Christian can build a person up and or tear them down with just a few words. As such, it’s important to wisely use our words to back up a real life that comes from a real faith. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.
Additional Bible Study: Join us this Wednesday for TCM’s midweek Bible Study “Connecting Sinai to Calvary” as we see how Jesus is the central figure of the Old Testament. We will meet at 6:30 PM in the Student Union across from the bookstore entrance. Gourmet donuts will be provided.
Would you like to learn more about our risen Savior Jesus, about the Bible that tells us about him, and about what Grace Lutheran Church believes and teaches? Our congregation offers a series of Bible-based lessons called Grow in Grace. Grow in Grace also serves as our membership class for those who may be interested in joining the church. If you would be interested in scheduling a Grow in Grace Class, please speak to Pastor Heiman, or register your interest at GraceLutheranSAZ.org/ GIG.
The Bible Project: The 66 books of the Bible are a collection of history, poetry, prophesy and insights into the eternal history of God and his people. The focus of the entire Bible is God’s plan of salvation. However because of the sheer volume of the Bible, many people get bogged down trying to read it and understand it. This Bible Project is a study that quickly summarizes each book and give the student a quick overview of the Bible. Please join us on Wednesday 10:00 AM in Church Entryway.
The Church History Bible Study will NOT meet this week or next (October 12 and 19). We hope you will join us again on Wednesday, October 26, at 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM in the Grace Tucson Fellowship Hall as we continue discussing the Church during the Enlightenment (approximately 1650 1800 A.D.).
The study of “Prepared to Answer,” a book by Pastor Mark Paustian, a professor at Martin Luther College, tackles common questions and viewpoints that come from nonChristians and even Christians on subjects like: “Do you really believe in miracles?” “But I’m pro-choice.” “There are no moral absolutes.” “There are things I’ll never be able to forgive.” “With so many interpretations and denominations, who can say who is right?” “Why doesn’t he answer my prayers?” Each question is handled in just a handful of pages, so it is easy to jump into the study at any time, even if you can’t make it each week. The book is provided at no cost to you and is yours to keep. Invite a friend and Join Pastor Koehler for what should be a very helpful study for us and for those we have discussions with about such things. This class meets on Thursdays at 9:00 AM in the Grace Tucson Fellowship Hall.
We will have a work day THIS Saturday, October 15, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM to move furniture between classrooms in the Child Learning Center. Please help us out if you can! If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Heiman.

A Special Voters’ Meeting is coming up on Sunday, October 23. This meeting will take place at noon here at Grace-Sahuarita, and lunch will be provided for those attending. The purpose of this meeting is to extend two divine calls for teachers at our Child Learning Center. The voters are also asked to approve spending to send members to the WELS National Conference on Lutheran Leadership. Finally, we are hosting a discussion and seeking member feedback regarding a potential additional pastor for our Sahuarita site with support from WELS Home Missions. We are planning to conclude the meeting at 1:15 that afternoon. More details may be found at www.GraceLutheranSAZ.org/ voters.
Please plan to join us for a special worship service on Sunday, October 30, at 4:00 PM at Grace Tucson. The services will be different, and the afternoon service includes our guest preacher, District President Jon Buchholz. Our Area Reformation Service will include the celebration of Holy Communion this year. You are also invited to stick around after the service for snacks and fellowship.
