G E L C T , A O 30, 2022 REFORMATION SUNDAY

Welcome to Grace!

Our mission at Grace is to teach the inspired and inerrant Word of God, to proclaim that Jesus Christ is the crucified and risen Savior of the world, and to nurture believers for lives of Christian service.

WORSHIP NOTES

We are very pleased that you have joined us for worship today! We pray that this time will be a blessing for you as God comes to you with his Word and promises, and as you offer him your thanks and praise.

The order of worship we will follow is printed in this worship folder for you to follow along and participate. You’ll notice that the service is a dialogue between God and us, his people. The pastor speaks to God along with the congregation and also speaks the Word of God to the people. LARGE PRINT worship folders are available at the entrances for those who desire them.

Today we are using elements from the Christian Worship (2021) hymnal. You will find these blue worship books in the hymnal racks in each pew. You will be asked to open the hymnal to participate in parts of the service today. We hope this will help our members and friends become better acquainted with these new books. Vocalists will aid in our singing and will be recorded for our audio disks and video live streaming.

THE FESTIVAL OF REFORMATION

On October 31, 1517 Martin Luther nailed 95 Theses statements for debate on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany beginning a spiritual and historical movement known as the Reformation. The Reformation did not just change the face of Europe; it restored the gospel to the church. It gave God’s Word to the people. As we celebrate the Reformation, we are not honoring the man for whom our church body is named. We are thanking God for his grace which he has demonstrated through the generations preserving the church and setting us free.

OUR SERVICE THEME—THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE

We value freedom and strive to protect freedoms. But do we truly understand freedom? Freedom for many means doing what you want without control or coercion. Jesus helps us to understand true freedom: “If you remain in my word, you are really my disciples. You will also know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31 32). Jesus says that you will never be free by living however you want. Take that attitude towards life and you’ll be a slave. You’ll only be free spiritually, emotionally, eternally “If you remain in my word” and therefore “know the truth.”

A key principle Martin Luther established through the Reformation is sola scriptura (Scripture alone). Luther thought it was the answer to all of life’s fundamental questions. On what basis is a belief or practice justified or rejected? Scripture alone. Who or what is the final arbiter of truth? Scripture alone. Heirs of the Reformation still bind themselves to Scripture. Does restricting ourselves in this manner curtail freedom? Just the opposite is true. God’s divinely inspired truth brings freedom. It frees us from slavery to sinful delusions, the burden of guilt, and any earthly power. Today we see that when we willingly bind ourselves to truth, Jesus keeps his promise. The truth sets us free.

ORDER OF WORSHIP

Today we are using a special order of worship based on Luther’s German Mass (Deutsche Messe) which was published in 1526. This order of worship was completely chanted except for the sermon. We will use some of the chanted elements today, aided by the vocalist.

OPENING HYMN O Lord, Take Pity Once You’ve Seen Christian Worship 865 Please stand

INVOCATION

Minister: In the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit.

Congregation: Amen.

CONFESSION OF SINS

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Let us confess our sins to the Lord. Holy God, gracious Father, I am sinful by nature and have sinned against you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved others as I should. I deserve your punishment both now and forever. But Jesus, my Savior, paid for my sins with his innocent suffering and death. Trusting in him, I pray: God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Silence for meditation and reflection

Our gracious Father in heaven has been merciful to us. He sent his only Son, Jesus Christ, who gave his life as the atoning sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the (+) Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The words to this hymn were originally written in German by Martin Luther. The tune of this hymn first appeared in Etlich Cristlich lider (“Some Christian songs”), the first Lutheran hymnal, published in 1524 in Wittenberg, Germany.

1 John 1:8 9

“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” James 5:16 Christ gave the authority to forgive the sins of penitent sinners to his church: “Whenever you forgive people’s sins, they are forgiven.”

Mark 10:47

Kyrie is the Greek word for Lord. The expression “Kyrie eleison” translates to “Lord, have mercy” and is one of the oldest worship responses in the Christian Church. The words and music of the Kyrie we are using today date back to the 9th century.

LORD, HAVE MERCY (Kyrie)

The vocalist will sing the entire Kyrie today. Kyrie! God, Father in heav’n above, you abound in gracious love, of all things the maker and preserver. Eleison! Eleison! Kyrie! O Christ our King, salvation for all you came to bring.

Christian Worship 934

Luke 2:14

Christians praise God by proclaiming the great things he has done to accomplish our rescue from sin. “Glory to God in the Highest” has been a Christian song of worship since the fourth century.

O Lord Jesus, God’s own Son, our mediator at the heav’nly throne, hear our cry and grant our supplication. Eleison! Eleison! Kyrie! O God the Holy Ghost, guard our faith, the gift we need the most, and bless our life’s last hour that we leave this sinful world with gladness. Eleison! Eleison!

GLORY BE TO GOD (Gloria in Excelsis)

Christian Worship 936

After a brief introduction, please join with the vocalists in singing the Gloria today.

This version of the Gloria first appeared in the Kirchen gesangbuch (Church Songbook) published in Strassburg, Germany in 1541. The text is attributed to Martin Luther.

This song continues on the next page.

+ THE WORD +

PRAYER OF THE DAY

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray.

Gracious Lord, our refuge and strength, pour out your Holy Spirit on your faithful people. Keep them steadfast in your Word, protect and comfort them in all temptations, defend them against all their enemies, and bestow on the church your saving peace; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Please

31

Yes, the days are coming, declares the L , when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.

32

It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers, when I took them by the hand and led them out of the land of Egypt. They broke that covenant of mine, although I was a husband to them, declares the L .

33 But this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the L .

I will put my law in their minds, and I will write it on their hearts.

I will be their God, and they will be my people.

The old covenant of law could tell people how to act. It could not create the desire to freely do so. The new covenant of grace transforms people’s hearts, so they freely and joyfully follow God’s will.

Thanks be to God.

Please open your hymnal to sing this Psalm today. The Psalms are found in the opening portion of the hymnal.

PSALM OF THE DAY—The L Almighty Is with Us Christian Worship 46

The vocalist will sing the first refrain and the verses. Please join in singing the remaining refrains and the final bolded verse.

St. Paul encourages us to stand firm in the freedom that we have in Christ.

SECOND READING

Galatians 5:1-6

1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not allow anyone to put the yoke of slavery on you again. 2 Look, I, Paul, tell you that if you allow yourselves to be circumcised, Christ will be of no benefit to you. 3 I testify again to every man who allows himself to be circumcised that he is obligated to do the whole law. 4 You who are trying to be declared righteous by the law are completely separated from Christ. You have fallen from grace.

5 Indeed, through the Spirit, we by faith are eagerly waiting for the sure hope of righteousness. 6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision matters. Rather, it is faith working through love that matters.

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

The Gospel Acclamation points toward the words of the Gospel.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

The vocalists/choir will sing Gospel Acclamation today.

based on John 8:31 32

If you continue, continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; and you will know the truth, you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.

Continue, continue in my word, and my disciples be. Continue, continue in my word, the truth will make you free.

Know the word, know the truth, my disciples be. Know the word, know the truth, the truth will make you free. The truth will make you free.

5

If you continue, continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; and you will know the truth, you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.

You are my disciples (continue in my word). You are my disciples (continue in my word). You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free. Yes, the truth, the truth will make you free. You are free.

John 8:31-36

31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you remain in my word, you are really my disciples. 32 You will also know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

33 “We are Abraham’s descendants,” they answered, “and we have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say, ‘You will be set free’?”

34 Jesus answered, “Amen, Amen, I tell you: Everyone who keeps committing sin is a slave to sin. 35 But a slave does not remain in the family forever. A son does remain forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you really will be free.”

Worship

1 Kings 8:57

Almighty and eternal God, when the set time had come, you sent your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, to take our place under the demands of the law and endure the just punishment for our sins. You raised him from death in glorious splendor and for his sake, you richly and daily forgive sins.

Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits.

When the set time had come, you poured out your Spirit on your people and called them to proclaim the gospel to every creature. Equipped and encouraged, they carried the story of salvation to all the world.

The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice.

When the set time had come, you raised up your servant Martin Luther to destroy the idols of the medieval age and to restore the pure teaching of the Scriptures. You granted power and success to the proclamation of the gospel, and your holy Church grew and prospered throughout the world.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble.

When the set time had come, you made our fathers bold to take their stand on the truth of your Word. Guided by your Spirit, they joined hands and hearts under a shared confession and with a determined resolve to work together in the ministry. You have blessed their sons and daughters and enabled us to preserve and proclaim the saving gospel of your Son.

Sing to the Lord, for he has done glorious things; let this be known to all the world.

Let this be the time when you renew us again by Word and Sacrament, when you reform our hearts and minds, and when you restore to us the joy of fellowship and service. Grant to us in this age and in this place the courage of the apostles, the steadfastness of the reformers, and the dedication of the fathers of our church’s past.

May the Lord our God be with us as he was with our fathers; may he never leave us or forsake us.

Let this be a time to imitate the kind hearted souls in our church who served the sick, helped the disabled, cared for the abandoned, and comforted the dying. Provide occasions to serve them and times to pray for them. Keep all your children in your powerful and gracious care.

As we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

Let this be a time when we recommit ourselves to the ministry of the gospel of your Son. Let us find joy in our unity, zeal for our work, and, if it is your will, success in our labor. And give us faith to take up again the trumpet none can silence or mistake and grant us courage to proclaim once more for all the world to hear: The feast is ready!

Come to the feast!

May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine upon us, that your ways may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations.

Hear us, Lord, as we pray in silence.

Silent prayer

Let this time and all our times be used to give thanks for your grace in Christ and to praise you for calling us into your mission to save.

Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love and establish the work of our hands. Amen.

Matthew 6 and Luke 11 record how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. We use his example prayer as part of our public worship, trusting that he will hear and answer our prayers. PRAYER

Blessed Lord, you have given us your Holy Scriptures for our learning. May we so hear them, read, learn, and take them to heart that, being strengthened and comforted by your holy Word, we may cling to the blessed hope of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

BLESSING

The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and (+) give you peace. Amen.

Sunday Morning Bible Study

“A God of Love Wouldn’t Send People to Hell.” “It Doesn’t Matter How God Made the World.” These and other popular, positive, catchy statements might sound good, but do they really fit with what the Bible says? We are currently working through “10 Lies About God.” This study will help us respond to false teachings about God and to defend what the Bible teaches. Now would be an excellent time to make this study a part of your Sunday routine! Please join us at 9:00 AM in the Fellowship Hall.

Area Reformation Service: Today

Please plan to join us for a special worship service this afternoon at 4:00 PM here at Grace-Tucson. This Area Reformation Service celebrates God's goodness to us through the Lutheran Reformation, and it provides an opportunity to worship with WELS members from churches all around the Tucson area. This service will be different from this morning’s and will include our guest preacher, District President Jon Buchholz. Our Area Reformation Service will include the celebration of Holy Communion this year. You are also invited to stick around after the service for snacks and fellowship.

Tucson Campus Ministry Bible Study: TONIGHT & Wednesday

Join us tonight at 7:00 PM in the Student Center here at Grace Tucson for TCM’s Bible Study “Patience and Prayer” from James 5:7 20. Do you struggle to be patient? How healthy is your prayer life? If you can grow in either of them, then join us for this study. Not only will we see how this text helps us in these, but we’ll also finish our “Real Faith for Real Life” unit on the book of James. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

Additional Bible Study: Join us this Wednesday for TCM’s midweek Bible Study “Connecting Sinai to Calvary” as we see how Jesus is the central figure of the Old Testament. We will meet at 6:30 PM in the Student Union across from the bookstore entrance. Gourmet donuts will be provided.
