The Struggle: Empowered by God’s Word Psalm 19:1-14 1) God Empowers Christians Through His Word 2) Christians Face Their Struggles Wise and Renewed When you’re going through a particular struggle, what gets you through it? Maybe it’s that cup of steaming, hot coffee during the workday or a relaxing beverage at home. Maybe it’s hearing the voice of a loved one or the tune of a familiar song. Or perhaps it’s the light at the end of the tunnel that looks like time off, something checked off the to-do list, or peace of mind. Depending on the particular struggle, I’m guessing you have any number of carrots, sticks, or mechanisms to get you through them. These solutions may work for our struggles that are here today and gone tomorrow or of a physical nature. But what about those struggles that just won’t go away or those of a spiritual kind? It’s likely these solutions do little, if anything, to actually help us get through them. In fact, they may fail us or set us up for further struggles. But that doesn’t mean that we’re up the creek and without a paddle. As Psalm 19 tells us, we are in fact empowered to face and withstand these struggles through a way that we may surprise us. And that often overlooked way is none other than the Bible, the Word of God. It is through God’s Word, more than most anything else, that our Lord empowers us to face and withstand our struggles. And for those who listen to God’s Word and put its empowerment into faithful action, they can face their struggles wise and renewed for it. 1) God Empowers Christians Through His Word Whether it’s the lyrical words we earlier sang, or the verses that are printed for you in your worship folder, Psalm 19 begins by recounting God’s glory as seen through nature. And indeed, that is a great place to look as we survey the beauties that God created in 6, 24-hour days. It’s all of nature, including the sky and sun which Psalm 19 specifically points out, that speaks silent words to all mankind. And what do they say? That there is someone who is highly intelligent and immensely powerful who designed this all, someone who is definitely not human like you and me. For the Christian who knows much more about God, it can be beneficial to considering God’s glory as seen in nature. But what about the person who doesn’t know much more about God? How does God’s glory as seen in nature equip them for their struggles? Not all that much. That’s because nature simply tells us that God is far more powerful and intelligent than we are, and there’s nothing we can do to bridge the chasm between us. That’s why we go to God’s Word, for it empowers us for the struggles that we face in life far more than nature does. Psalm 19 goes on to talk about God’s Word in six different ways. The first four go like this, “The law of the Lord is perfect. It revives the soul. The testimony of the Lord is trustworthy. It gives wisdom to the inexperienced. 8The precepts of the Lord are right. They give joy to the heart. The commandment of the Lord is bright. It gives light to the eyes.” (Psalm 19:7-8 EHV) First of all, God’s Word revives our soul, that is, it brings life back to our very being whether it’s spiritual or 1
