Get to Know Jesus: In His All-Encompassing Call January 24, 2021 Jesus Calls That All… Mark 1:14-20 1) People Repent and Believe 2) Christians Follow Him
As I have come to realize throughout this coronavirus pandemic that, we, as a planet full of people, are becoming connected to each other more and more. Not just that when a butterfly in China flaps its wings it’ll eventually create a light breeze in southern California, but also in the things we experience together. The world’s nations are beginning to debate about what to do with the Summer Olympics that were postponed from last year. As smartphones and internet access becomes more common, we see how quickly information flows to and from the remotest corners of the world. Or even how a local weather system can affect global supply chains as seen with bare shelves or rising price tags. As globalization becomes more and more the case, we recognize how we are connected to people we’ve never seen. And this is true, not just in what we experience and strive for, but in what we also need to hear. Even though it’s been 2,000 some years since our Savior Jesus walked this earth as described in Mark chapter 1, he continues to issue a call that encompasses all people to this very day about what they need to hear. And what is this all-encompassing call? First, how Jesus calls all people to repent of their sins and believe in him for salvation so that they may be in the kingdom of God. And second, how Jesus calls all Christians to follow him wherever they are in life above all else. 1) People Repent and Believe About 6 months have passed since John the Baptist signaled the start of Jesus’ public ministry with a baptism unlike any other. Throughout that time, John has been preaching his message of repentance and belief to all people, including King Herod. And that got him into some hot water because John was calling on Herod to repent of his sinful marriage to Herodias that was against Old Testament law in a number of ways. King Herod, tired of hearing John the Baptist, quieted him by imprisoning him. In John’s absence, Jesus continues preaching this message of repentance and belief to all the people in Judea, Samaria, and Galilee. We hear a summary of what Jesus was preaching where he says, “The time is fulfilled…The kingdom of God has come near! Repent, and believe in the gospel.” (Mark 1:15) The time of waiting for the Promised Savior was finally over because the Old Testament’s prophetic words had been fulfilled. The kingdom of God was now nearby. In case you’re wondering what this kingdom is, it’s wherever God is reigning as king whether it be physically in heaven or spiritually in every believer’s heart. As it was then, so it is now – if a person has faith, they are dual citizens of God’s kingdom and wherever their passport is from. It’s because of these two truths that Jesus calls upon all people to repent and believe in him. When we speak of repentance, we typically include its 3 steps: 1) Genuinely confessing your sins to God, 2) trusting in God’s promise to forgive those sins, and 3) living a life that tries to be free from 1
