GRACE STORIES

Visible From Space

On May 16, 2025, an EF-4 tornado tore through southeastern Kentucky, leaving a massive scar between Somerset and London that is visible from space, as shown in a striking image captured by NASA, shown below. The storm carved a path of destruction nearly half a mile wide in places, uprooting trees, flattening homes, and scarring the land.

This storm devastated parts of Laurel County, serving as a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience of our communities, as well as the importance of compassionate care during times of crisis.

KPCA: A BEACON OF SUPPORT IN OUR TIME OF NEED

In the wake of the devastating EF4 tornado that struck our region in May, many Grace Health employees were left facing unexpected losses and hardships. During this time of uncertainty, the Kentucky Primary Care Association (KPCA) stepped in with compassion, offering swift and meaningful support to those affected.

Thanks to KPCA’s generosity, employees like Hannah Johnson, LPCC-S, and her family found hope amid devastation.

“In a grievous time, KPCA was a glimmer of hope and restoration to my family,” Hannah shared “We will forever remember the impact of the storm, and we will forever remember your kindness and generosity ”

Grace Health is deeply grateful for KPCA’s ongoing partnership and the tangible support they provided to our team during such a challenging time Their support reminded us all that we are stronger together

MARANDA PORTWOOD: A LIFELINE IN THE STORM

by Casey Humes, PharmD, MBAMedical Campus Pharmacist

After the fatal tornado tore through Laurel County, I witnessed a powerful example of the compassion and commitment that define Grace Health. Maranda Portwood, a peer support specialist within our Substance Abuse Recovery program, consistently goes above and beyond to support those in her care One recent moment truly stood out.

Maranda Portwood, Peer Support Specialist

One of Maranda’s patients, a single mother of an 18-year-old daughter, lost everything when the tornado completely leveled their apartment in London. Her daughter survived only by taking shelter in a closet with their pets moments before the storm hit.

In the aftermath, this mother turned to the one person she knew she could count on: Maranda. She reached out just hours after the disaster, and true to her word, Maranda responded immediately. The patient shared with me that Maranda had constantly reminded her she could call any time, for any reason and in one of her darkest hours, that promise meant everything.

The patient’s gratitude was deep and genuine. She said she never doubted Maranda would be there for her, and she was right.

This story is a powerful reminder of the impact we can have when we build trust, offer compassion, and meet people where they are. Maranda’s unwavering support and dedication exemplify what it means to deliver whole-person care, and she deserves our heartfelt thanks and recognition for being a lifeline when it mattered most.
