Ukiyo-e, often translated as “pictures of the floating world”, is a genre of Japanese art which flourished from the 1600s–1800s. This editorial presents the genre’s history, as well as its production techniques, themes, and subsequent influence on Western art. It also profiles some of the most well-known, influential ukiyo-e artists and how they have made work that has continued to fascinate many over 200 years later.
