THE COTILLION-BEAUTILLION BALL Cotillion-Beautillion Balls have enjoyed resurgence in popularity. Young ladies and men are presented at elaborate balls given by their parents or grandparents. Today, the Debs’ and Beaus’ mothers arrange the ball, or a Cotillion-Beautillion may be held and overseen by a committee of people.

Many young ladies and men make debuts in a group at a large ball that is given for that purpose. The committee chooses the particular Debs and Beaus who will be introduced. Whichever procedure, the parents pay a share of the expenses.

The Debs and Beaus who are chosen, have shown exemplary character throughout their lives; high academic performance, participates in community service projects, and represents high moral standards and stand as good role models for those coming after them. A formal presentation also shows the community’s pride and respect for its young people.

A “coming out” which ideally is a debut into adult society, is a major event for a family. The Debs and Beaus spend time learning to dance, refining manners and social skills and participating in workshops that will enhance their lives.

Usually the Debs and Beaus invite a specified number of guests to a “sit down” very lavish supper ball. The Debs and Beaus take part in a very formal Cotillion-Beautillion pageant with their mothers and fathers. Traditionally, the young men wear white tuxedos and the young ladies wear white ball gowns. This type of group debuts relieves parents of the enormous amount of planning and expense that a large private party entail.

The Ball can be very spectacular and memorable. And, they can relieve the Debs, Beaus, and or their parents of any insecurity and tension that might be caused by making their debuts independently.

THE HISTORY OF

THE GRAND RAPIDS ALUMNAE CHAPTER DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INC. The Grand Rapids Alumnae Chapter, (GRAC) Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was conceptualized in the summer of 1968. Several potential charter members met on a regular basis in the summer and fall of 1968, with the dream of initiating a local graduate chapter. Finally, after several months of meetings, the dream was realized. On November 17, 1968, members of Delta Sigma Theta held their charter installation ceremony. The ceremony was performed by our 18th National President, Hortense G. Canady. At the time, Mrs. Hortense Canady was the Midwest Regional Director. She and other members of the Lansing Alumnae Chapter and members of Detroit Alumnae Chapter attended the installation ceremony. The charter ceremony was followed by a buffet dinner at the Charcoal Room at the Pantlind Hotel, now the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel.

In November of 1993, the GRAC celebrated its twenty-fifth Silver Anniversary. This celebration was again held at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel. Past National President Hortense G. Canady was the featured speaker and leader of the procession. Almost all the living charter members and the Regional Director, Sharon Chapman, were present for this exciting and memorable occasion.

In November of 2018, the GRAC celebrated its fiftieth Golden Anniversary. This celebration was held at the J.W. Marriott Hotel. Dr. Julianne Malveaux was our featured speaker.

There were thirteen local Deltas that chartered the GRAC. Local chartering officers were: President Marilyn Eaddy (deceased), Vice President Betty B. Burton, Recording Secretary, Dr. Patricia Pulliam, Corresponding Secretary, Tempy Hoskins, and Treasurer, Jennie Baker. Additional chartering members included Diane Garnett, Mildred Griffen, Jana Jackson, Helen Johnson, Callie Plummer, Ruth Scott, Yvonne Sims and Bernice Whitley.

Then as is true now, the GRAC was dedicated to the Five-Point Programmatic Thrust. The GRAC has many public service projects that incorporate the Five-Point Programmatic Thrust, including:

Academic Pentathlons, advising collegiate chapters (Lambda Pi, Sigma Beta and Tau Psi Collegiate Chapters), African American Male Forum, Christmas toy donations, Cotillion-Beautillion scholarships, Delta Days in the Nation’s and State Capitals, The Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy, Delteens -- now known as Delta GEMS (Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully), the Field to Factory Traveling Exhibit, health fairs, HIV/AIDS Speakers Bureau, Habitat for Humanity, Jabberwock, Jazz Brunch scholarships, teen mom mentoring, Thanksgiving basket donations, and women’s history and legacy celebrations (We Keep Coming).

Over the years, the GRAC, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority has received many awards: the Chapter Legacy of Sisterhood Award for the State of Michigan in 2006, the Regional Social Action Award in 2005, the Chapter of the Year Award for the State of Michigan in 2004, the United Way Healthy Kent Award in 2002, the Ta-Wa-Si Community Service Award in 1998, the J.C. Penny Golden Rule Award in 1996, the National Delta Sigma Theta Outstanding Program Award in 1996, the Giant’s Award in 1993. In addition to the local and national awards, the GRAC has written grants and received monies from those efforts. The funding sources include: Frey Foundation, Grand Rapids Community Foundation, Kent County Health Department, Michigan Arts Council, Michigan Consolidated Gas Co., Nokomis Foundation, and Steelcase Foundation.

The history of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is rich in tradition and community involvement.

The GRAC has always echoed these high standards. It is further hoped that the GRAC of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., will far surpass the ideals and dreams of the local charter members and the founders, who founded the first chapter in 1913 at Howard University in Washington, D.C.

Greetings from Angela D. Nelson, President Grand Rapids Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

On behalf of the Grand Rapids Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., it is my pleasure to extend a sincere and heartfelt congratulations to our 2020 Cotillion-Beautillion Scholarship Ball participants. This year has been like no other. We have faced a global health crisis, worldwide lockdowns, an economic recession that’s been likened to the Great Depression, rampant police brutality and social injustice against Black and Brown people, and much more. Yet, despite all the tragedy around us, there’s still much to be thankful for and to celebrate.

This year’s COBO serves as a symbol of strength and resiliency. Although we were unable to host this year’s culminating scholarship ball, we still take this moment to celebrate and honor nine amazing youth in this community. We are very proud of this dynamic group of young men and women who have been diligent and attentive to every component of this professional development, academic, cultural enrichment, and etiquette training program.

This COBO is the culmination of several months of hard work and dedication. The goal of this program is to empower the youth in our community with the tools necessary to be prominent leaders locally and globally. That’s why we have no doubt that they could in fact be the next Dr. Anthony Fauci – a leading infectious disease expert advising nations on global health crisis, the next police of chief leading transformational change inside a broken police system or even the next President of the United States who will lead their people instead of divide the people. And, based upon the sense of purpose, talent and character and respect they have demonstrated throughout the entire process, we can all be confident that they are well prepared for a successful and impactful future – no matter where the paths leads them.

In the words of the old African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child.” So, to the parents, grandparents, and guardians, we want to thank you for entrusting our Sorority to play a role in shaping the lives and future of your son and daughters. It has been a wonderful experience to work with them and get to know them. Job well done!

To our community of leaders, teachers, administrators, mentors, advisors, and friends, we thank you for being a part of the village. We thank you for your ongoing support, mentorship, encouragement, and prayers. This event would not be possible without you.

To our Debs and Beaus – this experience is for you and about you. This occasion sends a message to the world that you are ready to lead, to conquer, to go forth using the gifts that God has given you to be a productive citizen in our society. Cherish every moment and memory of this event, and always remember that you are a child of God, born to manifest His glory. I applaud your success and endeavors in 17 phenomenal years of mentoring and cultivating the young members in your community, as well as raising scholarship funds for college bound youth. This is a major undertaking you have successfully brought forth with grace and dedication, at a time of change and unprecedented accommodations. I commend your great works and service.

As you highlight, honor and show case your 2020 participants, I would like to express my sincerest appreciation to your chapter, for touching the lives of these young scholars. I wish you tremendous success as you make a memorable event for your participants and their families. I congratulate each of the participants for the commitment, hard work and accomplishment leading to this very special time.

I thank the families and the community for the continued support of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and Grand Rapids Alumnae Chapter as we continue to provide services to the community.
