SITE VISIT + CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT 124 South 6th St Las Vegas, NV The John E. Carson Hotel in Historic Downtown Las Vegas was completely gutted to inhabit a new fresh concept. The concept for Bocho, Downtown Sushi stemmed from the restaurant’s name, given by the owner. Usuba bocho is the traditional vegetable knife for a professional Japanese chef.

Like the knife, design elements combine industrial finishes with clean lines while splashes of color and collaged graphic wallpapers reflect the art of sushi making.

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS Design a bar restaurant and night club in the 100 year old Scheiffer and Sons Building in downtown San Diego.

Choose a country as concept inspiration.

Chosen Country | Cuba Key Concept | Restoration The concept of restoration umbrellas several ideas within the design and within the country of Cuba. Isolated by socialism, the island of Cuba remains a stranger to the United States.

Many outsiders view Cuba as a country frozen in time solidified with 1950s cars and crumbling colonial architecture. The life behind Cuba lies within in its people and their efforts to restore the decay around them. This is directly illustrated by the application of vibrant paint to the facades of the decrepit buildings.

THE CORE ELEMENT OF DESIGN The Restoration Staircase The core of our design is an evolving staircase that progresses from a literal to an abstract form of restoration.

SAN DIEGO + CUBA Baseball History With the location of the Scheiffer and Sons building hugging Petco Park it is important that the country chosen for concept inspiration, Cuba has a long history of baseball. Two of Havanas natives Yonder Alonso and Yasmani Grandal now play for the San Diego Padres. They are among a long lineage of Cuban ball players that have made San Diego a permanent home.

The staircase begins as colonial staircase restored with with steel beams in the damaged areas.

Next as though it’s building upon the existing decay from decades past, the staircase transforms into a contemporary design comprised of reclaimed wood, glass and steel.

Lastly, the staircase transforms into a 3form art sculpture that carries concept of restoration all the way through the ceiling. This staircase proves to intrigue guests driving them upward, being that the evolution cannot be seen until it is physically walked upon.

INITIAL CONCEPT The initial concept was to create a sculpture that embodied the idea of renewal. It began with a sculpture of rotating glass.

The sculpture would travel through all floors and end at the rooftop.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT Realizing weight constraints and other accompanying issues the design changed to a more literal embodiment of the concept.

CORPORATE OFFICES OLD LOGO

This project required the selection of a record label or television network and design of an existing building into the chosen company’s corporate headquarters. Our group chose to design for Spike TV. The company had just recently rebranded their network. Spikes hand written, loose logo transformed into a strong, sleeker logo.

NEW LOGO

Therefore, our concept was to design in harmony with this change.

The sleek, masculine design included space planning, rendering, furniture and finish selection.
