Summer may be over, but it was a great one in so many ways! As we transition into the rest of the year, the Membership Activities Committee is hard at work planning both our traditional events and some exciting new ones. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to share them with the committee.
If you have some time to spare, many of our committees could use additional help. After all, it is your Club, and the more you get involved, the more enjoyment you will find in it.
For our newer members, joining the bowling leagues is a fantastic way to meet people and socialize. To get started, please contact Gordy Woods. There are still a few spots left!
It’s never too early to start planning your holiday party. In fact, many people have already done so. Contact Catering Director Maria Dallas and her team soon, as the prime slots fill up quickly!
I want to extend a special thank you to our Harbor Master, Alex Turner, and his dedicated staff for all their hard work. I also want to recognize our summer staff as they head back to school for another year—thank you for your efforts! Our Day Camp staff, along with our Sailing and Swim Team coaches, did an outstanding job, ensuring a fun-filled experience for all our campers.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the annual survey. Your feedback is taken very seriously; all comments are read and carefully considered by the Board of Directors and management to guide decision-making. Director Saldana is diligently analyzing the data to make it as useful as possible.
Please consider attending the Annual Meeting on Thursday, November 14. This is your Club, and a lot of important information will be shared. It’s also the night when the Member of the Year and Employee of the Year will be announced, and you won’t want to miss it!
Regards,
William Dillon Commodore

Notes from the Manager
Take Your Best Shot this Fall
At the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, we're all about creating magical experiences for all ages and all seasons. This past summer was another banner year for our programming, thanks to you—our incredible members!
Our Racquet Sports reached an all-time high in participation, with the highlight being our full-time Pickleball Pro, Mike Andrews, offering private and group lessons for all ages and skill levels. Tennis also set records under the leadership of our longtime Racquet Sports Director, Dmitri Diakonov, and Junior Pro, Jordan Andrews. It’s been exciting to watch this area grow so much over the last five years.
Day Camp continued to shine under the new leadership of Day Camp Director, Caelin Micks. The children explored all areas of the Club and made new lifelong friends. If you have kids or grandkids, be sure to sign them up for this fantastic program next year.
Sailing saw the addition of a brand-new fleet of boats, and our Sailing Director, Christina Noland, earned the prestigious DRYA Coach of the Year award. Our Swim Team kept up its momentum with a group of amazing youngsters who swam fast at the MICSA Finals, finishing as one of the top teams in the division. Congrats, Sailfish! The Club even extended the pool season for a few extra weeks, giving members more time to enjoy it.
But we're not sad to see Fall arrive—no way! GPYC takes on a whole new identity in the Fall, with a fresh lineup of programming. The Bowling Leagues have begun and are sold out again. Get on the list of substitutes to join the fun by emailing Bowling Director Gordy Woods at gwoods@gpyc.org. We also offer plenty of opportunities to bowl outside the leagues. Open Bowling on Saturdays and Brunch and Bowl on Sundays are perfect for family activities or honing your bowling skills. Make Sundays a GPYC day this season—come for brunch, bowl a few games, and cheer on the Detroit Lions. Let’s hope they can get over the hump this year and contend for the Super Bowl. Restore the ROAR!
Another unique and exciting activity the Club offers starting in November is Trap Shooting. Held at the Marine Activity Center every Saturday and Sunday through March, the MAC is a great place to hang out and take some shots. Our staff, led by Christina Noland, ensures a safe environment for everyone. For those who aren’t familiar, Trap Shooting is a sport where you shoot shotgun shells at moving clay targets. The Club has invested in a machine that throws the clays over the water, challenging you to time your shot perfectly. The clay disc targets are biodegradable, and we only permit steel shot shells to protect our environment. This program has grown every year since its inception, and we invite you to come out and take your best shot!
Happy Fall! We look forward to seeing you soon at the Club.

A Member to Remember
By Past Commodore James L. Ramsey
Warren O. Winstanley
He was one of Detroit’s finest automotive photographers and the creative energy behind some of the most memorable parties ever held at this club.
No one who ever met Warren Winstanley found him easy to forget. He had a boundless passion for life, and his enthusiasm was contagious. Warren was a living dynamo of energy, a creative genius who made magic happen every time he clicked the shutter of his camera.
His talent for finding glamor in the sometimes-stodgy automobiles of the 1960s and ‘70s brought him acclaim and wealth in the Detroit advertising community. It also brought him to the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club where he became a member in 1970. Warren was a boating enthusiast, yes, but he was an enthusiast in everything he did.
Winstanley quickly caught the eye of then-Commodore Ralph Kliber, who sagely appointed him entertainment chairman the year after he joined. Innovative parties for members were high on Kliber’s strategic to-do list as a means of supporting the Club’s capital agenda. He found just the person he needed in Winstanley.
Warren’s photographic assignments often took him to Hollywood, where he had friends at Universal Studios, the film industry’s mega-source for authentic sets, props and costumery. So, if a party at GPYC called for a tropical setting, Warren had an almost
unlimited supply of palm trees, hula skirts, war canoes, Ukuleles and exotic stuffed birds to draw from. And to assist him with the logistics, he had the help of members Jack Thompkins and Wayne Long, luminaries in the airline and trucking businesses, who made sure that the chosen props and decorations were expedited (at no cost) from California to the Club in time for the party. Of course, once the decorations arrived, Warren and his assistants worked tirelessly to install them in just the right way so the clubhouse exuded genuine South Seas authenticity. The goal was to make guests feel they were really there, and they succeeded every time.
The results of Warren’s work were spectacular. A shipwreck-themed party, for example, had huge ship’s sails strung from the flagpole, replete with mannequin-sailors in the yardarms to publicize the event, while the bow of a large sinking boat jutted 20 feet from the lawn below. The inside of the clubhouse was similarly bedecked in shipwreck motif, and members responded by showing up in their best survivor regalia.
Another party, based on an “Elizabethan Feast,” featured period dress and a lamb supper, at which attendees were encouraged to eat with their hands, as was the custom
in Elizabethan days. Warren even formally invited Elizabeth II, Queen of England, as a guest, who graciously sent an official representative to the event.
Other parties were themed around life in ancient Rome and Mardi Gras, where Warren recreated Bourbon Street in New Orleans, right down to the actual storefronts.
“There’s only one way to decorate for a party – and that’s all the way,” said Warren. Which was the way he did everything, work or play.
Sadly, Warren Winstanley passed away in 1974 at age 53. But the laughter and fun he brought to our halls still echo among those who fondly remember him.

Food & Beverage of the Month
Sean Brown Assistant General Manager
The Grosse Pointe Yacht Club’s Summer Cocktail Contest wrapped up on Labor Day, and we’re thrilled to announce the winner: congratulations to Mike Hadsell! Mike’s signature cocktail, Mike’s Summer-Cello was the clear favorite, with an impressive 549 sold over the summer. This earned him the top spot, along with a cash prize and a permanent place on our drink menu. Mike’s creation edged out strong contender like Sarah’s SOS and Don Julio’s Aperol Spritz Margarita
The entire bar staff did a fantastic job, with over 1,500 cocktails sold throughout the contest, generating nearly $20,000 in revenue. We’re also proud to remind members that $1 from every cocktail sold is being donated to the GPYC Sailfish Swim Team.
A heartfelt thank you to all our talented bartenders and to the membership for your support of this fun initiative.
In addition, we’re excited to unveil our new Fall Cocktail Menu, developed with the help of GPYC Bartender Sarah Mazzone. While there’s no contest this season, we encourage you to try our new Pomegranate Negroni, with just a hint of rose water. This cocktail, featured at our recent Darioush Wine Dinner, received rave reviews.
Cheers!

Savoring the Season: Apple Crisp in Michigan
As the crisp autumn air settles over Michigan, there's no better way to embrace the fall season than with a warm, comforting dessert. Apple crisp, a beloved classic, stands out as a quintessential Michigan treat, blending the state's abundant apple harvest with a touch of seasonal charm.
Michigan, renowned for its apple orchards, offers a diverse range of apple varieties perfect for crisp-making. From the tart and tangy Honeycrisp to the sweet and juicy Jonagold, each apple brings its own character to the dish. Local orchards across the state are bustling with families picking their favorite varieties.
The essence of a great apple crisp lies in its simplicity. Tender, spiced apples are topped with a buttery, crunchy crumble made from oats, brown sugar, and a hint of cinnamon. This delightful contrast of textures and flavors makes each bite a cozy celebration of fall.
Many Michigan bakeries and cider mills put their own spin on this classic dessert. Some incorporate local spices or add a touch of maple syrup for extra depth. Whether served à la mode with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or enjoyed plain, apple crisp is a versatile treat that warms both the palate and the spirit.
This fall, as you explore Michigan's vibrant foliage and savor the local apple bounty, be sure to indulge in a slice of apple crisp. It's a delicious reminder of the season's abundance and the simple pleasures of homegrown goodness.
Apple Crisp
Topping Ingredients:
•¾ cup old-fashioned oats
•¼ cup flour
•1 teaspoon cinnamon
•½ teaspoon nutmeg
•¼ cup sugar
•¼ cup light brown sugar, packed
•4 tablespoons cold butter, cubed
•Ice cream or whipped topping (optional)
Apple Filling Ingredients:
•6 Granny Smith apples (peeled, cored, and sliced thin but not slivered)
•2 teaspoons lemon juice
•¼ cup all-purpose flour
•¾ cup sugar
•½ cup light brown sugar, packed
•1½ teaspoons cinnamon
Directions:
1.Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly spray an 8×8-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
2.Make the topping: In a mediumsized bowl, combine the oats, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, sugar, and brown sugar. Stir until evenly mixed.
3.Add the cold butter to the dry ingredients and work it in with a fork or your fingers until the mixture becomes crumbly. Set aside.
4.Prepare the filling: In a large bowl, place the sliced apples and drizzle them with lemon juice. Toss until wellcoated.
5.In a small bowl, combine the flour, sugar, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Sprinkle this mixture over the apples and toss until they are evenly coated.
6.Layer the apples into the baking dish and spread the crumbly topping over them.
7.Bake for 35 to 40 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
8.Serve warm, topped with ice cream or whipped topping if desired.
Membership Matters
Docktail Parties: Bridging the Gap at Grosse Pointe Yacht Club
The Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, recognized as a Distinguished Club by BoardRoom magazine, has recently charted a new course in member engagement with its innovative "Docktail Parties." These lively gatherings, which won first place in the Membership Development category at the 2024 Club Management Association of America (CMAA) World Conference in Las Vegas, have revolutionized how members connect. By fostering a fun and inclusive atmosphere, Docktail Parties unite members from all segments of the club, transforming a simple desire to build community into a beloved tradition that other yacht clubs may want to emulate.
The concept was straightforward yet brilliant: host casual social gatherings in the club's picturesque 252-slip harbor. By choosing different areas of the harbor for each event, members enjoyed unique atmospheres and stunning views each time, making the experience fresh and exciting. Alexa Coole, Membership Director, explained, "I created the Docktails event to satisfy and connect the entire membership, including both active and social members. We wanted to make everyone feel welcome and part of the community."
The execution of these events was seamless. Docktail Parties took place once a month, with a simple yet effective formula: great company, delicious cocktails, and live music. The live music component added a lively energy, encouraging members to linger and enjoy the evening. "The music really set the tone," Coole noted. "It created a warm, inviting ambiance that made members want to stay and mingle longer."
These gatherings have been particularly impactful for social members who might not typically engage in boating activities. "We found that social members felt more integrated into the club's culture through these events and gained additional knowledge about boating. Following the execution of this event, five social members converted to active membership," Coole said. "They had the chance to explore the harbor, meet other members, and even learn about boating from those more experienced. It broadened their engagement beyond traditional activities and helped them feel more connected."
Members' reactions to the Docktail Parties have been overwhelmingly positive. The events have become a highlight of the club's social calendar, offering a relaxed and enjoyable way for members to interact. They provide an opportunity for newer members to meet the more seasoned ones, fostering connections that might not happen in other settings. "The feedback has been fantastic," Coole shared. "Members appreciate the casual, no-pressure environment, and it's been a great way to bridge the gap between different interests within the club."
For other yacht clubs looking to replicate this success, the key is simplicity and inclusivity. The concept doesn't require extravagant planning—just a welcoming space, some good tunes, and a willingness to bring people together. As Coole aptly put it, "It's all about creating opportunities for members to connect and feel like they're part of something special. That's the real magic of the Docktail Parties.”

FLEET REVIEW WEEKEND
From Thursday, August 15 to Sunday, August 18, the Club was transformed into Commodore Bill Dillon's Margaritaville theme for the Fleet Review weekend.

On Saturday, August 17, members participated in the Fleet Review showcasing their salutes and festive boats on Lac St. Clair. That evening was our annual Fleet Review dinner, and the food was all the rave - as well as the awesome pineapple center pieces!
Labor Day Weekend
The Labor Day weekend kicked off with our Annual Fishing Rodeo on Saturday, August 31. The first-place winner was George Fanger, grandson of Rob and Sheila Crandall, with an impressive 18-inch catch! Colette Posby secured second place with a 10-inch catch.
Chef Eric and the culinary team treated us to a smoker station throughout the weekend, filling the air with delicious aromas.
On Sunday, September 1, Rev. Schmidt led Worship on the Water on the East Lawn, continuing the cherished tradition from previous years.
Monday, September 2, member's kids gathered around the pool for the annual pool games, hosted by Elizabeth Bourke and the lifeguards. Milliken Rendezvous
GPYC members gathered at Milliken Harbor in Detroit for a weekend of fun and camaraderie during the Milliken Rendezvous. The event kicked off on Friday, September 13, with members arriving at the marina and enjoying a lively potluck, where everyone shared their favorite dishes.
On Saturday, September 14, the group made a stop at Joe Muer's for a delicious dinner, savoring a night of fine dining before heading to The Yard for some friendly competition with life-sized yard games.
The weekend concluded on Sunday with the annual "Biking with Bud" along the scenic Detroit Riverwalk. Members enjoyed the beautiful views and wrapped up the day at the Bloody Mary bar before setting sail back to the Club.
Doggy SplaSh Day Wraps Up the Pool Season
On Wednesday, September 18, members and their four-legged friends gathered for our annual Doggy Splash Day to mark the close of another fun-filled pool season. Big and little dogs alike raced around the pool deck in derby style, excited to meet new furry friends. After all, what better way to make a new friend than to give a little sniff or a kiss? While some pups were a bit unsure—observing the action from atop trash cans or just outside the gate—they still enjoyed the fun-filled atmosphere!

On Sunday, September 15, the Sailfish wrapped up the season with our annual pool party and awards banquet. Our swimmers worked incredibly hard throughout the season, both at home and away meets. In recognition of their dedication and team spirit, both in and out of the pool, each Sailfish was honored by the coaches, with special recognition given to our high-point and special achievement swimmers.
The Donna Vollmer Memorial Award is presented to the GPYC senior swimmer who demonstrates leadership, team spirit, and a superior work ethic. The Fred Michalik Award is given to the GPYC swimmer who best exemplifies Coach Fred's attributes: determination, hard work, a passion for swimming, and compassion for fellow teammates.
Swim Team Spotlight
Congratulations to all our amazing Sailfish and thank you to our very committed swim committee and parent volunteers. Thank you also to our 2024 swim team sponsors:

Relieving Lower Back Pain: The Importance of Strong Hips and Core
Lower back pain is a common complaint that affects many individuals, often disrupting daily activities and reducing quality of life. While the cause of lower back pain can be multifaceted, one of the most prevalent reasons is tight hips and a weak core. Understanding the connection between these areas and your lower back can provide valuable insights into managing and preventing discomfort.
The hips play a crucial role in supporting the lower back. When the hip muscles are tight, they restrict the natural movement of the pelvis. This restriction forces the lower back to compensate, often resulting in strain and discomfort. Tight hip flexors can pull the pelvis into a forward tilt, leading to increased curvature in the lower back (hyperlordosis) and stress on the lumbar spine. This misalignment creates a cycle of pain and stiffness, which can become chronic if not addressed.
On the other hand, a weak core can further exacerbate the problem. The core muscles—including the abdominals, obliques, and muscles of the lower back—work together to provide stability and support for the spine. When these muscles are underdeveloped or weak, they are unable to effectively support the spine's alignment and movement. As a result, the lower back is left to bear the brunt of everyday activities, leading to fatigue and pain. A strong core acts like a natural brace for the spine, distributing stress more evenly throughout the body and reducing the likelihood of injury.
To alleviate and prevent lower back pain, it is essential to focus on improving both hip flexibility and core strength. Incorporating exercises such as hip flexor stretches, glute bridges, and planks into your routine can make a significant difference. Hip flexor stretches help to relieve tension in the hips, allowing for better pelvic alignment. Glute bridges strengthen the glutes and promote hip stability, while planks engage the entire core, building strength and endurance.
By addressing tight hips and weak core muscles, you can significantly reduce the risk of lower back pain. Making these targeted exercises a regular part of your fitness routine will not only improve your posture and mobility but also enhance overall well-being. Remember, a balanced approach to fitness that includes flexibility, strength, and stability is key to maintaining a healthy and pain-free back.

EVOLUTION OF THE GPYC MEMBER GUIDE
By Dr. Larry Stephenson
In last month’s issue of The Grosse Pointer, it was explained how our monthly magazine was developed out of necessity by Commodore George Slocum, transitioning from a four-page newsletter to a full-fledged news magazine beginning with the November 1938 issue. Commodore Slocum continued to publish this news magazine through 1939, and then capped off the year by producing a yearbook.
This first yearbook contained much more than just a recap of social events and activities. It also included names and photos of board members along with names, photos and contact information for members. There was a Yacht Registry and a listing of House Rules and Bylaws. The yearbook was so well received it became an annual extension of The Grosse Pointer for the next 50 years.
The cover of the 1939 yearbook reflects how important sailing was to the early members of the Club. It features a drydock scene with several large sailing vessels in various stages of repair, highlighting the members' strong interest in sailing. In contrast, the 1944 cover shows an entirely different focus. The cover portrays a friendly encounter between a sailing vessel and the U.S. Coast Guard, presumably on Lake St. Clair. Throughout the war, the Coast Guard had a prominent presence in the Great Lakes, and the GPYC regularly opened its harbor to the “Coasties” whenever needed. The 1944 issue’s advertisements were almost universally tied to the war effort, which was to be expected with Detroit being known as the “Arsenal of Democracy.”
With the coming of peace, the 1945 yearbook cover exudes tranquility, depicting a family on a motor yacht in calm waters, symbolizing the relief the entire country must have felt. The yearbook continued in this form until 1992, when it was replaced by the guide we use today. With the rapid advancement of technology, it seems only a matter of time before members will be viewing the GPYC Member Guide electronically—and feeling perfectly comfortable doing so.
