This month's cover photo, captured by John F. Martin Photography, features our new Board of Directors for the incoming year from the 96th Annual Commodore's Ball. To add a touch of nostalgia, we decided to replicate the Grosse Pointer cover photo from 1969, offering a glimpse into our Club’s rich history alongside its bright future.
As we embark on this new year, let’s carry the joy and wonder of the holiday season with us. The spirit of togetherness, generosity, and reflection that defines the holidays can guide us in the months ahead. May the anticipation and belief in the magic of new beginnings inspire us to embrace the promise of 2025 with optimism and excitement.
Let us celebrate the opportunities ahead and create memories that will last a lifetime. Wishing you a year filled with wonder and new beginnings.

As we celebrate the start of the new year, it is a perfect time to reflect on another beautiful holiday season at our Club. The decorations and holiday lights made the Club look its absolute finest. Driving up to the Club in December is the one time I don’t mind the short days!
Our December events began with the annual Christmas Tree Lighting and a very well-attended visit from Santa. We continued the celebrations with the Commodore’s Ball, which fully embraced the Christmas theme. I hope everyone who attended had as much fun as Mary and I did. Thank you for coming and for your kind words.

The holiday season was truly magical at the GPYC again this year, with stunning decorations and an array of festive parties and activities. The Club was vibrant with holiday cheer, and it was wonderful to see so many families enjoying themselves.
Now that winter is upon us, there are still plenty of opportunities to embrace the season. Attention shooters! Have you tried Trap Shooting at the Marine Activity Center? The Club offers an exceptional program every Saturday and Sunday. With safety as the top priority, our staff curates an unparalleled experience in a unique, waterfront setting.
Another exciting winter activity to explore is Paddle Tennis. No, not Pickleball. Paddle Tennis is a winter sport played on a raised, deck-like surface enclosed by fencing on all sides. Heaters located underneath the courts keep the surface dry and playable throughout the winter months. The Club has two courts located on the north side of the property, complete with a warming house for added comfort.
The highlight of midwinter activities is always the Winter Blast Event. This year, the event will take place on Friday, January 17, and it promises to be another memorable evening. Hosted by the Pointe Club—our committee of members aged 40 and under—the event will have broad appeal to all members, regardless of age, who want to celebrate winter in style. Be sure to sign up early to secure your tickets. Members are strongly encouraged to invite non-member friends and family to join the festivities. If you know someone who might be a prospective member, this is a perfect opportunity to showcase GPYC’s dynamic culture and flair!
While we enjoy the winter fun, many of us are already dreaming of summer. The GPYC has another exciting schedule of Boating Rendezvous planned for the 2025 season, many of which offer convenient options for non-boaters to join in the fun. The signature rendezvous for 2025 will be the Up North Rendezvous to Mackinac Island and St. Ignace, taking place August 4-6. For those looking for a shorter trip, we’ll head back to Put-In Bay and the Catawba Island Club from July 16-20. Exploring the islands and scenic coves of Lake Erie always makes for a fantastic getaway.
The annual In-Harbor Rendezvous will take place the weekend of June 13-15. As part of this exciting weekend, the Club will debut its first-ever Small Craft Rendezvous, featuring dinghies and small center consoles traveling from GPYC to Nautical Mile locations.
To learn more about all of these exciting rendezvous, please plan to attend the 2025 GPYC Rendezvous Preview Event on January 22. This is a great opportunity to sign up for events and ask questions of the various Chairpersons and staff.
We look forward to seeing you around the Club this winter and beyond!

Press Release: Grosse Pointe Yacht Club has Maintained Distinguished Club Status
Grosse Pointe Shores, MI
December 16, 2024
BoardRoom Magazine, in partnership with Forbes Travel Guide, is proud to announce that Grosse Pointe Yacht Club has maintained the prestigious Distinguished Club Designation with ICONIC status, The Hallmark of Excellence for private clubs. This merit-based award recognizes exceptional private clubs that exceed expectations in the quality of service, facilities, governance, and most importantly the teamwork of the staff and management.
“We are proud to acknowledge Aaron Wagner, General Manager and his team for delivering an exceptional Member Experience for the members of Grosse Point Yacht Club.”—John Fornaro, Publisher and Co-founder of BoardRoom Magazine
Distinguished Clubs is the only merit-based award program for private clubs, where awarding is determined by an impartial formulaic assessment, rather than a mere peer-based vote of industry insiders, www.distinguishedclubs.com. All clubs that have been formally nominated by the Distinguished Clubs Nomination Committee and have been surveyed in person by a Distinguished Clubs survey professional and have earned a satisfactory Net Promoter Score and Member Experience Index, will thereby have earned Distinguished Clubs status. In addition to Distinguished Club status, a club may also be recognized with one of three possible Distinguished Clubs Special Designations, Iconic, Elite or Exceptional.

We have moved to a system where you will electronically sign the annual lease contracts, upload proper insurance forms, as well as registration documents. The company we have partnered with is called Dockwa. Moving forward, we will be utilizing their contracts module to assist us with our annual billing and keeping all documents on file electronically. Currently, all members accounts are on the three-month installment plan for November, December and January for the well fee.
This system was put in place to assist myself and staff in keeping track of updated insurance and proof of ownership. I’ll be able to track outdated insurance and registrations with a few clicks on the keyboard. I will be adding a picture of your vessel when you arrive in the springtime to upload into your profile. Once I have all the information loaded this winter, next year’s signing of the contract will only take a few minutes.
Lastly, adding the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club to your insurance policy is mandatory to store your vessel here. If you haven’t done so, please have your insurance company email me the policy listing us as additional insured and I will add the document into Dockwa.
Change is not always smooth, and we will have some bumps as we continue to move forward. Once this program is in place this system will be used for many years to come as a tool for in managing this great Harbor.

As winter settles in, bringing low water levels and freezing conditions to the Harbor, it’s important to prioritize safety around the Club.
Here are a few reminders to ensure everyone stays safe:
1. Stay Clear of Finger Piers and Docks: For your safety, please refrain from walking on the finger piers and docks.
2. Be Mindful of Ice Eaters: Be aware of the Ice Eaters in operation, and note that safety ladders may be raised or out of the water.
3. Use the Buddy System: Travel in pairs and communicate your whereabouts. Always let someone know if you’re venturing outside.
4. Dress for the Weather: Wear weather-appropriate clothing and footwear. Keep your hands free and out of your pockets to maintain balance as you move around.
5. Exercise Caution on the East Bridge: Be extra cautious when crossing the East Bridge, especially if you’re heading out for Trap Shooting.
Ice can form on walking surfaces and make them slippery.
By following these safety measures, we can all enjoy a secure and pleasant experience at the Club throughout the winter season.
Serving Up Pickleball
By Peter Wendzinski
Welcome Back Pickleball Pro and Director, Mike Andrews! The GPYC Athletics Department is excited to welcome back Pickleball Pro Mike Andrews for the 2025 season!
Originally from Iron Mountain, Michigan, in the Upper Peninsula, Mike played #1 singles and doubles tennis at Lake Superior State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Recreation Management with a minor in Business. He is certified by the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) in both tennis and pickleball and brings over 25 years of experience in the racquet sports industry.
Mike has served as an instructor, college coach, director, and manager at clubs in Indiana, Wisconsin, and Michigan. He is currently the director at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. Additionally, he has been actively involved in community programs and events, supporting organizations like Buddy Up for Down Syndrome athletes, Special Olympics Michigan, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Mike's achievements include being named USPTA Midwest Professional of the Year and receiving the USTA National Community Service Award. He is the former president of the USPTA Midwest Division and has served as a speaker at various conferences and workshops. Mike has also directed numerous tennis and pickleball tournaments and events.
Pickleball Tips and Tricks:
1. Master the Serve: Keep it simple and consistent. A deep serve can make it harder for your opponent to return.
2. Dink Smart: Focus on soft, controlled shots near the net to force your opponent into mistakes.
3. Stay Light on Your Feet: Quick movements and positioning are key, especially in doubles play.
4. Communicate with Your Partner: If you’re playing doubles, clear communication prevents confusion and ensures better teamwork.
5. Use the Third Shot Drop: After the serve and return, aim to hit a soft drop shot into the kitchen to regain control of the point.
6. Maintain Paddle Position: Keep your paddle up and ready, especially during fast exchanges at the net.
7. Work on Your Footwork: Proper foot positioning helps with balance and executing precise shots.

Jumpstart Your Fitness Journey in 2025 at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club
As we approach the New Year, it’s the perfect time to reflect on how we want to prioritize our health and well-being in 2025. At the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, we are fortunate to have a strong community, a beautiful setting, and incredible facilities to help us all reach our fitness goals. If you’re thinking about starting an exercise program or getting back on track, let me remind you that the most important factor in achieving lasting results is consistency.
Start small, but start today. One of the best ways to jumpstart your fitness routine is through something simple yet effective: walking. Setting a goal of walking at least 7,500 steps a day is a great place to begin. Walking is an accessible, low-impact activity that can boost your mood, improve your cardiovascular health, and help you feel more energized throughout the day. It’s easy to fit into your routine, and before you know it, you’ll be hitting your step goal with ease. Remember, consistency is the key to making lasting progress, and small steps lead to big rewards over time.
If you’re looking to take your fitness to the next level, don’t hesitate to reach out to me for a personal training session. Whether you’re new to working out or a seasoned athlete, I’ll work with you to create a plan that suits your unique goals. My personal training sessions are available for $85 for a one-hour session, or $45 for a half-hour session. These one-on-one sessions are a great way to get expert guidance, improve your form, and stay motivated.
For the month of January, I’m offering a special package to help you kickstart the year with a strong fitness foundation. For $100, you’ll receive a one-hour in-person personal training session, followed by a customized four-week training program designed to fit your needs. This program can be done at home or in our beautiful gym, ensuring that you have everything you need to succeed on your fitness journey.
Let’s make 2025 the year you commit to your health and well-being. I’m excited to help you achieve your goals, and I look forward to a year filled with progress, strength, and vitality.
Wishing you all a healthy and happy New Year ahead!
Feel free to reach out to me today to book your session or learn more about the January special. Let’s make this your best year yet!

Healthy New Year Recipes
Yellowtail Tuna (Hamachi) Crudo
Serves 2, with 5 oz per person
Ingredients:
- 10 oz yellowtail tuna (Hamachi) loin, skinned and bloodline removed
- Pinch of seasoning salt
- 1 lemon, zested
- Maldon sea salt, to finish
- Extra virgin olive oil, for drizzling
Optional Garnish:
- Freshly cracked black pepper
- Green onions or microgreens
Method:
Chill the fish thoroughly. Using a sharp knife, slice the fish thinly on a bias at a 45-degree angle on a clean cutting board. Arrange the slices evenly on two plates.
Garnish the tuna with a pinch of seasoning salt, lemon zest, and a drizzle of olive oil. Add freshly cracked black pepper and optional garnishes like green onions or microgreens if desired. Serve immediately.
Healthy Cooking for the New Year
As the new year begins, many of us embark on a journey to refresh our bodies and embrace healthier habits. How do we achieve this? Not through extreme diets or fleeting fads, but by focusing on simple, wholesome foods with big, bold flavors. It’s remarkable how one small change can make a significant impact.
Healthy eating often starts with simplicity. At its core, it’s about embracing raw or minimally processed foods. The key to exceptional flavor lies in how these ingredients are prepared. For example, take yellowtail Hamachi tuna—a prime choice among the world’s finest sushi restaurants. It’s a high-quality protein with a delicate flavor that shines through with minimal seasoning and thoughtful preparation.
Tuna, a very lean fish, stands out in the culinary world alongside other premium proteins like filet mignon. When selecting tuna, freshness is paramount. Look for translucent flesh with a vibrant appearance, free of imperfections. Any visible blood should be bright red, indicating careful handling during the butchering process.
Thinly sliced tuna is a true delicacy, whether served on its own or atop crusty toasted bread drizzled with olive oil and finished with sea salt and freshly cracked pepper. This simple preparation highlights the fish’s natural flavors and makes for an elevated dining experience. (See the recipe below for inspiration.)

TREE LIGHTING & Santa's Arrival
Friday, November 29
In a twist to our holiday traditions at the Club, this year brought forth a Christmas spectacle that had the young and young-at-heart buzzing with excitement. On Friday, November 29, Santa Claus, not arriving on his sleigh as tradition would have it, made a grand entrance on a firetruck, courtesy of the Grosse Pointe Shores Police Department!
There was great anticipation as families and children gathered in the Front Lobby, their eyes sparkling with wonder and curiosity. The children, faces pressed against the windows, couldn't contain their delight as Santa stepped off the truck, greeted by Commodore Robert Weiland.
Once inside, Santa, with a twinkle in his eye, took his place amidst the enchanting holiday décor in the Rotunda, where the GPYC holiday tree was waiting to be lit. The children gathered around as Santa shared tales of his journey and spread holiday cheer. They also had the chance to catch up with him and let him know whether they had been naughty or nice this year.

Looking Aft "High Dining" on the GPYC Roof
The following article was published in the August issue of The Grosse Pointer with one glaring error. The accompanying photo was the cover of the 1938 Grosse Pointer, which had nothing to do with the article. The photo shown here is the correct one, depicting awnings and flags on a rooftop clearly intended for use by members.
On the cover of the book celebrating the 100-year anniversary of our Club is a 1928 rendering of the proposed clubhouse. Generally unnoticed is a feature that did not survive the cut when expenses had to be trimmed to fit the budget. A close look at the rooftop shows a line of pink stripes appearing to be some kind of awning. Welcome to rooftop dining.
The proposal was to offer members a summer dining experience with a spectacular view. The 48 ft. x 95 ft. space was to be canopied for members’ comfort – hence the pink stripes. With no plans for kitchen or bar facilities and only dumbwaiters to provide food and drinks, this was clearly not high-end dining, but rather a very casual gathering place for members to enjoy the summer weather and lake views. One could argue it is rather like our Gazebo Bar today, with perhaps a slightly less spectacular view but a much more comfortable experience.
Of course, this space required an elevator, and when said elevator was removed from the plans due to cost overruns, rooftop dining came down to earth, which in retrospect was probably a good thing.
Since this article was published, a bit of new information has come to light. It turns out that in 2019 there was an attempt to actually utilize the rooftop, taking advantage of the eye-popping view. Having an elevator now that transports members as far as the Tower Pub and Library made it seem possible for members to easily make their way to the roof on foot. Two events were held, and indeed, the view did not disappoint. However, accessing the area proved to be somewhat difficult, involving poorly lit stairs and working machinery. Considering that predicament, along with a suspicion that the rooftop may not have been reinforced enough as flooring to sustain a crowd, the decision was made to err on the side of caution and abandon the idea.
