Our cover photo for this issue captures the breathtaking scene of the Northern Lights dancing over the Club. Visible to the naked eye, it was a sight to remember forever. This month’s stunning cover photo was taken by Beth Kliber, sister of the late GPYC member Tom Kliber. Tom was renowned for his beautiful photography, and it’s clear he passed his skill on to Beth. We are grateful for her captivating photo of the Club.

Commodore's Corner
The transition to summer weather brings with it the unveiling of our pool, the opening of the Gazebo bar, and the reinstatement of lunch service, heralding the prime season for enjoying our Club's offerings.
As we near the completion of various projects, I want to take this time to thank Sean, Marcus, and all involved staff and contractors for their dedicated efforts. The Facilities and Heritage committees have played pivotal roles in ensuring that these projects align harmoniously with the Club's architectural integrity.
Looking ahead, it's worth noting that our esteemed Clubhouse will mark its centennial milestone in 2029. To prepare for this historic occasion, the Centennial Project team, spearheaded by our current Secretary, Michael "Sobo" Sobolewski, has been assembled. With his commendable talent and work ethic, Michael leads this endeavor with diligence.
To support the Centennial Committee in shaping the future of our Club, the McMahon Group has been enlisted to conduct comprehensive research, surveys, and studies. Your input is invaluable in this process; should you be approached by them, seize the opportunity to share your thoughts and ideas. After all, this Club is yours, and your vision contributes significantly to its evolution.
Funding for these endeavors is made possible by the GPYC Foundation, and we extend gratitude to all who have generously contributed. For those interested in further supporting our initiatives, please reach out to our CFO, Jim Demasse. Remember, contributions to the foundation are tax-deductible under 501(c) regulations.
As we embrace the spirit of summer, mark your calendars for the upcoming 4th of July fireworks display and the Fleet review in August. Your Club is ready to provide you and your loved ones with countless opportunities for fun and cherished memories during what promises to be an exceptional summer season.
Regards,
William Dillon Commodore

Notes from the Manager
Rendezvous by Land or by Sea!
It's nearly rendezvous season, and the Club has an exciting schedule planned for both boaters and non-boaters alike. It all kicks off on June 27 at the historic Old Club on Harsens Island. This rendezvous is incredibly convenient, just a short trip of less than half an hour by boat or about 45 minutes by car. You can always expect a fantastic time with great food and breathtaking views of the South Channel at Harsens Island.
In July, things heat up, and so do the rendezvous. First on the list is the annual trip to Catawba Island Club near Port Clinton, Ohio. A manageable two-and-a-half-hour drive by car makes this trip accessible to everyone. Catawba Island Club boasts a picturesque shoreline overlooking Lake Erie's sunsets, along with several dining venues and lively themed bars. With a well-manicured golf course and plenty of nearby attractions, the fun on this trip is endless. Special thanks to Vice Commodore Bob and Mary Weiland for chairing this year's rendezvous.
Another exciting addition to July's lineup is the brand-new rendezvous thanks to Commodore Bill Dillon and First Lady Jennifer, who proposed a trip to downtown Cleveland. If you haven't experienced Cleveland yet, sign up today, because this one promises to not disappoint. The itinerary includes a visit to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a docktail party on the docks at the Oasis Northcoast marina, a group dinner along the shore of Lake Erie, and a Detroit Tigers game against the Cleveland Guardians.
Later in the fall, the Club will head to downtown Detroit for the annual Milliken State Park Rendezvous from September 13-15, for a final hurrah before the Michigan weather turns cold again. Make the most of our amazing summer weather! Get out and expand your horizons by signing up for these rendezvous and enjoying time with fellow members and family.
When the weather does turn, it's time to head down south for the Lauderdale Boat Show Rendezvous on October 31. Experience the best boat show in the world and soak up the sunshine amongst members and friends (and maybe even find your next boat!)
To sign up for any of these wonderful rendezvous, please email the Front Desk at frontdesk@gpyc.org.

Harbor Happenings
We're delighted to introduce Trace the Dalmatian, the newest member of our team at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, serving as our official goose-chaser. Owned by Grosse Pointe Shores resident and professional dog trainer, Fran Bachmann, Trace brings his unique skills to the Club almost every day.
Unlike traditional methods of goose control, Trace doesn't harm or bark at the geese. Instead, he uses his natural instincts to gently herd them away from our grounds. His swift and agile movements create a sense of urgency among the birds, encouraging them to seek refuge elsewhere.
Trace's effectiveness in goose control has been recognized beyond our Club's grounds. Many surrounding parks in the Grosse Pointes also rely on Trace, or other goose-chasing dogs, to maintain a peaceful environment.
In May 2018, Trace received a prestigious honor when he was awarded a K-9 patrol badge by former Public Safety Director John Schulte, acknowledging his valuable contributions to our community. With Trace on patrol, we can enjoy a cleaner and safer environment for all our members and guests. Join us in welcoming Trace as he helps keep our Club grounds free from unwanted visitors.

Embrace the Playful Spirit: Why Adults Should Reconnect with Outdoor Games
As the summer sun graces the skies, there's no better time for adults to heed the call of outdoor play. Amidst the responsibilities and stresses of adulthood, it's easy to forget the sheer joy and freedom that comes with engaging in childhood games. Yet, it's precisely these activities that hold the key to not only physical fitness but also a renewed sense of vitality and connection with our inner child.
Picture this: the warm breeze gently caresses your skin as you step onto a grassy field, soccer ball at your feet. With each kick and pass, you feel a surge of energy coursing through your veins, invigorating both body and mind. Outdoor play isn't just about reliving past glory on the field; it's about embracing a holistic approach to fitness and well-being.
For those with children, a trip to the playground offers the perfect opportunity to channel your inner adventurer. Climb those monkey bars, swing from the ropes, and let laughter fill the air as you revel in the simple joys of play.
As the saying goes, "We don't stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing." These words ring true now more than ever. Embracing outdoor play as adults isn't just a whimsical indulgence; it's a powerful antidote to the stresses of modern life. Here's why you should make outdoor play a priority this summer:
1. Physical Fitness: Engaging in outdoor games like tag, capture the flag, kick the can, and just going up and down the slide provides a fun and effective way to stay active. From cardiovascular benefits to improved agility and coordination, these activities offer a full-body workout that doesn't feel like exercise at all.
2. Mental Well-being: The freedom and spontaneity of outdoor play can do wonders for your mental health. As you immerse yourself in the game, worries and stressors melt away, replaced by a sense of joy and presence in the moment.
3. Connection with Nature: Spending time outdoors allows us to reconnect with the natural world and appreciate its beauty. Whether you're kicking a ball in the park or climbing trees in the forest, the fresh air and sunshine rejuvenate both body and soul.
4. Bonding with Loved Ones: Outdoor play isn't just a solo endeavor; it's an opportunity to connect with friends, family, and community. So, grab a ball, gather your loved ones, and let the games begin. The laughter and shared experiences will strengthen your bonds and create lasting memories.
So, as the summer beckons, don't let adulthood rob you of the simple pleasures of play. Dust off your soccer cleats, grab your old rubber kickball, and head outside for a dose of fun and fitness. Whether you're reliving childhood memories or creating new ones, one thing is certain: outdoor play is the key to a vibrant and fulfilling life.

Summer Cocktail Menu
As we sail into summer, the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club is set to delight members and guests with a refreshing array of cocktails, all courtesy of the innovative minds behind the bar. In a bid to infuse the season with a dash of friendly competition and a splash of creativity, GPYC has launched the 2024 Summer Cocktail Competition.
Behind this exciting initiative are seven talented bartenders, Joe, Kishor, Mike, Tommy, Don, Steve and Sarah. Each bartender was asked to submit a signature drink that both showcases their talents and embodies the essence of summer, destined to grace the menu throughout the season. With each bartender bringing their unique flair and expertise, bar patrons can expect a diverse range of flavors and concoctions that celebrate the summer.
In a twist that adds an extra layer of intrigue, the bartender whose drink garners the highest number of sales will be rewarded with a hefty prize at the end of summer. This incentive not only ignites the competitive spirit among our talented mixologists but also ensures that members play an integral role in determining the Summer Cocktail King (or Queen).
However, there’s more than just great drinks and friendly competition here. GPYC is proud to announce that $1 from each drink sold will be donated to the Sailfish Swim Program. This underscores the Club’s commitment to supporting the youth of Grosse Pointe Yacht Club and the rich tradition of competitive swim at GPYC.
So, let’s all raise a glass to creativity, camaraderie and competition as we unveil the Summer Cocktail Competition, where every sip tells a story, every sale counts towards crowning a champion and we all contribute to supporting our young swimmers. Cheers!

Grilling Techniques and Tips: Be a Grill Master this Summer
As we envision beautiful days and savor the aromatics of smoky meat wafting through the air, the sun casting its golden glow, and friends and family gathering around the grill, we embark on a culinary adventure. When selecting our grilling method, we must consider the desired outcome. Grilling offers a distinct flavor enhancement compared to methods like sautéing, poaching, or frying. Whether using charcoal, wood, or a gas burner, grilling imparts a lasting sensation of smoke and char that remains etched in our memories.
The debate between charcoal and wood revolves around flavor and efficiency. While charcoal offers its own unique flavor, wood provides a cleaner, more natural option without additives. Woods such as oak, hickory, and cherry lend their distinct flavors to grilled dishes, burning cleaner than charcoal. However, for those nostalgic for the aroma of charcoal, it can be blended with wood to impart a desired flavor profile.
While beef, hamburgers, and steaks often dominate our grilling fantasies, selecting high-quality meats from reputable vendors is paramount. The grade and cut of meat significantly impact the result. Opting for cuts with ample marbling and selecting from grades like select, choice, or prime ensures a flavorful outcome. Popular cuts like filet, NY strip, ribeye, flank, skirt, or sirloin offer diverse options for every palate.
Seasoning plays a pivotal role in grilling, with some recipes passed down through generations. Whether using a secret family blend or a premixed seasoning, allowing the flavors to meld for a brief period before grilling enhances the final product. Personally, when seasoning, I like to let the meat set for at least 10 to 20 minutes to soak in the flavor. Marinating overnight infuses deeper flavors, while dipping sauces featuring umami-rich ingredients intensify the taste. Most seasonings incorporate salt to unlock flavor profiles and complement other spices.
The searing heat of the grill is instrumental in locking in flavor and imparting a smoky essence to meats. Preheating the grill sufficiently before cooking ensures the perfect sear, creating those coveted grill marks like a branding iron. Allowing meat to cook undisturbed ensures a proper seal, sealing in juices and flavor. Make sure when you are done cooking that you let it rest before cutting it. My rule of thumb is at least 20 to 30 minutes depending on the size of the meat that is being cooked. Resting the meat post-cooking is essential, allowing juices to redistribute for a moist and tender result.
In conclusion, safety should always be a priority when grilling. Adequate preheating, seasoning, and allowing for resting time are essential steps in crafting a memorable grilled meal. Grilling offers a natural way to infuse flavor and create lasting memories on a beautiful day outdoors.

Membership Matters
Alexa Coole
Membership Director
Dear Members,
There is truly no better way to welcome the summer season at the Club than Memorial Day Weekend- a time-honored tradition that sets the stage for the season ahead. Last weekend was just a taste of the exciting lineup we have in store for you this year.
Three-Year members, mark your calendars for the most anticipated event of the year, the River Cruise on Thursday, June 6. Join us as Past Commodores and current members of the Board guide us down to the Ambassador Bridge for an evening of cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and good company.
But wait-there's more! Don't miss our Member Orientation on Tuesday, July 16. An opportunity for both new and longtime members to learn about the Club website, available programs, and committees at the Club. It'll be an informative session that you will not want to miss. We'll wrap up the night at the Gazebo Bar with a casual champagne reception to celebrate new connections.
Cheers to summer!
Warm regards,
Alexa Coole
Membership Director

Meet the Staff
We're delighted to welcome Peter Norager (left) as our Banquet Chef and an esteemed addition to the GPYC team. With over 40 years of experience in the hospitality industry, Peter brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to our Yacht Club. We eagerly anticipate the contributions he'll make to our team's ongoing success and growth, as well as the exceptional experiences he'll help craft for our members.
Can you share your background in hospitality?
In my 44 years in hospitality, I attended the Culinary Institute of America in High Park, NY. I've worked extensively across various states on the East Coast and have previously owned multiple restaurants and banquet halls. Prior to joining GPYC, I spent five years at Vintage House.
What do you find most enjoyable about working at GPYC?
The camaraderie among the GPYC team is what I find most enjoyable. Upper management excels at fostering a supportive environment, where everyone pitches in to ensure success.
How do you like to spend your free time?
In my free time, I love golfing, boating, and tackling home improvement projects. Family time is precious to me, especially with my two college-aged daughters. I also have an energetic dog named Frankie who keeps me active with playtime and walks.
What is your favorite television show?
Hands down, Blue Bloods is one of my favorite TV shows. I also have a soft spot for The Sopranos; it's a classic that I could watch endlessly without getting tired of it.
Share a fun fact about yourself.
About fifteen years ago, I set a world record for creating the largest cheeseburger. It fed around 220 people and tipped the scales at over 383 pounds. The bun itself measured a whopping 56 inches wide.
We are thrilled to introduce Jerry Lalonde (on the right), our Banquet Cook, as a valued employee of the GPYC team. Jerry has been with the Club for 2 years, but with over 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry, Jerry brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to our Yacht Club. He collaborates closely with Chef Peter to craft exquisite dishes for banquets. Jerry is an indispensable member of the GPYC team.
What is your previous background in hospitality?
In the past, I worked in Las Vegas within the Hotel Division at two prominent casinos, primarily in the Wardrobe Department. Additionally, I served as a Chef in Rochester, MI, overseeing both a la carte and banquet operations at a prestigious private country club.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I find great joy in outdoor activities such as playing golf, camping, and hunting, particularly during the fall season.
Do you have a favorite television show or book you like to read?
My reading preferences lean towards classics like Mark Twain and Dickens. I dedicate two to three hours daily to reading, as I'm not particularly drawn to television. I also find immense value in staying informed about global affairs through newspaper readings.
What is your favorite holiday to celebrate?
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. It truly is about giving thanks and it’s the only holiday we celebrate thanks without giving gifts to friends and family we celebrate with.
What do you enjoy most about working at GPYC?
At GPYC, I find an ideal platform to showcase my culinary passion and skills. The atmosphere of a private club setting allows me to forge meaningful connections with our members, which is something I genuinely cherish.

Club Highlights Kentucky Derby Watch Party
On Saturday, May 4, excitement filled the Main Dining Room as members gathered to watch the thrilling annual Kentucky Derby race. With anticipation in the air, everyone had the chance to participate by guessing the winning horse for a shot at winning a coveted bottle of wine.
As the race unfolded, the unexpected happened: Mystik Dan crossed the finish line first, surprising many with his victory. However, it was Sierra Leone who captured the attention of several members, securing second place with an impressive performance.
Despite the outcome, the Gleasons emerged victorious, winning the consolation prize of a bottle of wine. It was a lively and engaging event, filled with cheers, suspense, and the joy of camaraderie as members came together to enjoy the excitement of the Derby.

Looking Aft
Early GPYC Member Mega Boats
By Larry Stephenson, MD
About 12 years ago, during research for the GPYC Centennial book, a notable fact emerged regarding early member boats: size mattered. Sixteen members owned boats ranging from 100 to 190 feet in length, while five members possessed boats exceeding 200 feet. In an article for the Old Club 1872-1972 Centennial Album, the late newspaper columnist George Van addressed this trend. He observed that boat sizes at the Old Club began increasing at the turn of the century and continued until the mid-1930s when the Internal Revenue Tax Collector began determining the size of every boat, leading to the gradual disappearance of luxurious vessels.
Most GPYC members who owned such "luxurious queens" held prominent positions in Detroit’s automotive industry. The five owners of 200+ feet yachts were Russell Alger (Winchester, 225 ft); Walter Briggs (Cambriona, 225 ft); Horace Dodge (Nokomis II, 243 ft and Delphine, 258 ft); Frederick Fisher (Nakhoda, 235 ft); and Com. Edsel Ford (Sialia, 223 ft). These yachts, along with those over 100 feet, were too large to dock in the harbor and were anchored in the outer waters of the Club, necessitating launches to transport owners, passengers, and crew to and from the clubhouse.
The Great Depression, coupled with the introduction of the income tax, made the 1930s a challenging time for mega yacht ownership, even for the affluent. Then, with the outbreak of war in 1941, many of these yachts were requisitioned by the US Military for various global duties. By the war's end, it became evident that the era of "luxurious queens" on the Great Lakes had ended.
For more on this subject, including photos, see Early Members and Their Boats, GPYC Centennial Book, pages 268-283.
