BACHELOR OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION NWP’s Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) is a degree designed to prepare tomorrow’s business leaders with the entrepreneurial skills and business acumen required to thrive. Beginning in Fall 2023, this four-year degree program means students can earn their entire BBA degree at NWP, with both part-time and full-time options available.

With elective emphasis options in accounting and human resources, students will also learn fundamental business concepts, including financial and supply chain management, communications, marketing, information technology, law, and economics.

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION POST-DIPLOMA CERTIFICATE The Business Administration (BA) Post-Diploma Certificate is designed for students who have a post-secondary credential (a diploma or bachelor’s degree) and are looking for career-focused education and experience. This program is ideal for mature students interested in a new career as well as international students looking to enhance and focus their career-ready skills in a global setting.

All students will learn fundamental business concepts in legal relations and business communications. In addition to completing these core business courses, students will have the opportunity to customize their certificate based on their career goals by selecting business electives from a variety of different specialization areas in financial planning, marketing, and human resources management - or the ability to acquire a certificate in every single focus should they wish.

REGISTERED APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM The Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) delivers apprenticeship training opportunities to high school students in Grades 10 – 12.

RAP students advance career goals as they complete a 125-hour internship to put towards required hours for their firstyear apprenticeship of the same trade.

Students will also earn up to 40 high school credits for their completed work.

Real working experience and classroom learning are combined to train apprentices. You will spend 6–12 weeks per period of your trade at NWP with the rest of your training on the job.

To become an apprentice, you must be 16 years old and meet the minimum educational requirements for your trade. Alberta’s Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT) has recently updated apprenticeship applications to allow students to enroll in school before working to complete required period hours. Jeremy Williams moved to Grande Prairie based on an opportunity from a family member. As he immersed himself in the community of Grande Prairie, he worked in the telecommunication and oilfield industry. He is extremely thankful for the oil industry because it helped him learn quickly and equipped him with a strong work ethic. His “don’t give up attitude” drives him forward when the going gets tough, or in his case, when the weather gets terrible. Jeremy studied and obtained his Journeyperson Electrical ticket through NWP and worked for a very successful

company that helped him thrive as an individual and electrician.

Although the oilfield industry is very profitable, Jeremy always had an interest in electrical systems for commercial and residential buildings. He loved the diversity of electrical options that could be used on a series of platforms. That is what led him to take jobs in the residential and commercial field during his days off. He gained vast knowledge about the industry by doing this over a period of time. After meeting his fiancée, they decided the future was to take the side job gig to its full potential and make it the primary focus. They are happy to say since May 2021, J&D Western Electric Ltd. has been Jeremy’s focus. His business is growing

In this 15-week program, students learn the intricacies of these worldrenowned machines to become the finest technicians for authorized Harley-Davidson® retailers across Canada. Nurture your love for a finely tuned engine in our modern facilities with top-quality instruction and an established curriculum.

As a Motorcycle Mechanic, you repair and maintain many different brands and models of street, off-road, and dual sport bikes. Students get those wheels turning through training in motorcycle charging, starting and ignition systems, four-stroke tuning and top-end diagnosis, inspection and reconditioning procedures, transmissions, crankshaft repair and more.

Get ready to learn advanced technical knowledge and hands-on skills from the perspective of a heavy equipment technician certified to service Caterpillar equipment. HEALTH CARE AIDE CERTIFICATE

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING NWP offers the University of Alberta Collaborative Baccalaureate Nursing program.

Students obtain a 4-year Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BScN) from a top university with all courses being completed at NWP. In this program, the art and science of nursing is developed through a variety of methods.

You will gain practical experience in nursing laboratories, acute care, and community agencies in the region.

Health Care Aides (HCA) play a vital role in the workforce, providing basic health services and support with daily living activities for patients who have medical conditions or major functional limitations.

HCA’s work under the direct or indirect supervision of a regulated health professional, such as a nurse.

NWP’s Practical Nursing program prepares students to become Licensed Practical Nurses. Graduates of this program are eligible to write the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam (CPNRE).

The program is approved by the Education Standards Advisory Committee with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA).

EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANT CERTIFICATE This program prepares graduates to work in educational settings under the direction of a teacher, providing support to students who require assistance in developmental, behavioural, and/ or learning tasks. Graduates of the Educational Assistant program are prepared to work with children in the school system from kindergarten to Grade 12 in both resource rooms and classrooms.

This program also offers the opportunity for those currently employed as educational assistants to continue working in the field while obtaining certification.

Sheryll Ann Esporton felt wellequipped to launch her career forward after graduating from Northwestern Polytechnic’s Early Learning and Child Care diploma program. She entered the program already providing in-home child care through the Watch Me Grow Family Child Care Program.

Completing the diploma enhanced her skills and the training allowed her to qualify for a higher salary.

If you have a passion for exercise, sport performance, or human movement, Kinesiology may be the program for you. Study a wide variety of courses from anatomy and physiology to coaching, psychology of sport and exercise, and nutrition.

Use your passion to learn about movement, dance, and physical literacy and apply it to youth.

Educate and inspire how sport, fitness, and nutrition lead to maintaining an active, healthy lifestyle. This 2-year transfer program is part of a 5-year University of Alberta combined degree.

NWP students may complete two years, studying aspects of physical activity, exercise, fitness, health, and sport, working towards a Bachelor of Kinesiology at the University of Alberta.

Possible Careers: Kinesiologist, employment with sport and recreation programs and facilities, coaching. Upon completion of this program, students may pursue further training in rehabilitation medicine, including physical therapy and chiropractic.

PERSONAL TRAINER DIPLOMA

The Kinesiology Diploma builds the foundation for further education within the field by offering the same courses as the Bachelor of Kinesiology, University Transfer program. At the end of 2 years of successful studies, students are awarded an NWP diploma.

Are you interested in physical fitness, fitness evaluation, leadership, and the promotion of health and wellness? The trend towards healthier lifestyles and recognizing the need for personalized fitness programs has created a growing demand for qualified and certified personal trainers. Students will receive specialized training in one or more certifications and be given the opportunity to gain valuable experience by completing a supervised practicum in this growing industry.

Possible Careers: Introductory careers in recreation and sports environments, therapeutic assistant in a variety of contexts, coaching.

Pre-Professional Studies Some university programs require students to complete general courses before being admitted to a more specialized program. Pre-professional programs at NWP provide the necessary courses for admission to professional programs at universities in Alberta and across Canada. If you are interested in the following areas, you can obtain the required courses at NWP.

Collaborative programs allow students to finish all four years of a bachelor’s degree at NWP’s Grande Prairie campus. Typically, students complete two years as an NWP student and two years as a student of a top Alberta university, taking courses on the NWP campus to complete their degree.

BACHELOR OF EDUCATION, TEACHER EDUCATION NORTH NWP offers the Teacher Education North (TEN) program in collaboration with the University of Alberta.

Through a focus on rural and Indigenous education, program graduates are qualified elementary educators who are uniquely prepared to teach in northern communities. Many instructors are long-time residents of the region, bringing a regional perspective to their teaching.

Possible Careers: Elementary teacher, school administrator, instructional designer.

Facilities include a circuit design and robotics lab, a data communications and networking lab, and six general access computer labs. ANIMAL HEALTH TECHNOLOGY DIPLOMA NWP’s Animal Health Technology program produces highly skilled and capable graduates. The program features a working on-site farm with a variety of both large and companion animals, providing students with hands-on experience treating and caring for live patients of all sizes.

Students also have the opportunity to spend time in veterinary clinics and related veterinary facilities, in addition to completing rotations in the NWP on-site clinic and a six-week practicum at a facility within Canada. Graduates are eligible to write the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE), which is required to become registered as Veterinary Technologists in the province of Alberta.

Northwestern Polytechnic unearthed exciting possibilities for Sheldon Twizell. After studying at NWP, he completed a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree at the University of Alberta and went on to hold various research positions with the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada. If it wasn’t for the instructors, the opportunities, and the tight-knit group of students, Sheldon isn’t sure he would have continued his education in engineering.

“I enrolled with very little understanding of engineering as a career path. The very knowledgeable and friendly professors helped instill a passion and interest in engineering by fostering an engaging environment for learning, as well as providing opportunities to connect with practicing professional engineers to learn about the profession.”

Sheldon is now employed with DIALOG Design as a Bridge Engineer, working on bridge projects throughout Alberta, in particular, the new Highway 40 bridge south of Grande Prairie.

The Indigenous Coordinator works to help students overcome obstacles they may encounter on their educational journey.

The Coordinator helps students navigate and weave together the world of an Indigenous person with the life of a student.

The Elder provides cultural and spiritual support, a sense of home and connection for students, and opportunities to increase cultural awareness at NWP. Our Elder is available for opportunities to share knowledge, teachings, guidance, and ceremony with the NWP community.

ON-CAMPUS FRIENDSHIP CENTRE The On-Campus Friendship Centre is a partnership between NWP and the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre. Through the Outreach Worker on campus, we strive to provide a smooth transition for students entering NWP and the surrounding community.

Lindsay Halcrow started her educational journey at Northwestern Polytechnic as a mature student with a growing family. Staying close to home while completing the Bachelor of Education (TEN) program was a priority for Lindsay, and she was able to do just that at NWP. The cultural connections she made with the On-Campus Friendship Centre and the NWP Indigenous Student Services have provided her with valuable community links and tools to enhance her career as an Indigenous educator. She now works as a substitute teacher and a youth leader for a local non-profit and hopes to inspire youth to achieve their dreams.

What are the units like?

Units and bedrooms vary based on the unit type. All units are furnished with a kitchen table, chairs, fridge, freezer, and stove. All bedrooms contain a twin bed, dresser, closet, desk, and study chair. On-site, coin-operated laundry facilities are available.

What do I need to bring?

You will need to bring bedding for a twin bed, towels, personal items, cleaning supplies, laundry supplies, food, toiletries, and kitchen items.

Bring anything you might need for cooking, preparing, and eating food. This varies in non-cooking units on our Fairview campus.

How are rooms assigned?

NWP has competitively priced housing in both Grande Prairie and Fairview. Living in residence provides students a safe and supportive environment with plenty of transitional support. Included in the rent are all utilities, Wi-Fi and TV services.

We accept applications year-round for residence on our Grande Prairie campus. Applications received prior to March 31 for the following Fall/Winter semester are assessed and assigned through a lottery system. Applications received after March 31 are assessed and assigned in the order they are received.

Be sure to coordinate with friends and indicate on your application if you wish to live with someone in particular.

On our Fairview campus, rooms are assigned to align with program schedules and are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
