Ethan

The Rowney brothers are taking computing skills and family ties to a new level. Both enrolled in Northwestern Polytechnic’s Bachelor of Computing Science degree – first Ethan, then his younger brother Owen the following year. “I think I influenced Owen by raving about the instructors,” he laughs.

When Ethan began to prepare for his fourth-year capstone project, he had

a brainwave: who better to collaborate with than his brother? Although Owen was in his third year, their instructors were flexible and supportive, allowing the siblings to complete an impressive project focused on neurofeedback and braincomputer interfacing.

The brothers are in sync in their praise and deep appreciation for the program and the specialized career opportunities. “The hands-on

experience makes the courses really useful and applicable,” says Ethan, who has now graduated and is working in frontline IT with the City of Grande Prairie. Owen agrees. “A lot of students might think, will I ever use this? But last semester I took web development – and now I’m really doing it.”

For Grace Larson, staying close to home meant gaining the skills to go anywhere.

She chose Northwestern Polytechnic’s Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) to earn a respected business degree without leaving the Peace Region — and graduated career-ready, stepping straight into a full-time role with NWP’s School of Health.

Alongside her academic success, Grace was proud to be named Valedictorian for NWP’s 2025 Convocation, representing the first graduating class of the BBA program. The honour recognizes not only academic achievement but also leadership and meaningful contributions to campus life.

“My emphasis is on Human Resources,” says Grace who also built a solid foundation across key business areas including accounting, communications, marketing, information technology, law and economics.

She gained the broad-based knowledge today’s employers expect, supported by small class sizes and meaningful connections with instructors that helped her grow personally and professionally. Getting actively involved on campus revealed even more opportunities to learn, lead, and thrive.

“Say yes to things,” says Grace. “Once you do one thing, it opens the door to more opportunities.”

The Computer Systems Technology (CST) program offers opportunities to integrate extensive software development and hardware skills. Facilities include a circuit design and robotics lab, a data communications and networking lab, and six general access computer labs. Students choose between a one-year certificate or a two-year diploma. Students who complete the diploma may transfer into year three of four in the NWP Computing Science degree or to several different institutions in Alberta.

Possible Careers: Game programmer, computer programmer, systems analyst, network administrator, IT support, database administrator.

The apprenticeship-style curriculum covers topics such as PC hardware configuration, operating systems, network communications, and professional IT practices. Students gain practical experience through integrated work placements in industry settings, applying theoretical knowledge to solve real-world IT problems. The program also emphasizes professional skills, including project management and career preparation, ensuring students are equipped for a smooth transition into the workforce.

Possible Careers: Computer network/web technicians, user support technicians (help desk), telecommunications specialists, cybersecurity analysts, and IT technicians.

ANIMAL SCIENCES

AGRICULTURE OPERATIONS

The Agriculture Operations diploma program is a comprehensive training opportunity designed for individuals aspiring to pursue a fulfilling career in modern agriculture and farm operations. This diploma program prepares graduates for employment as a grain farm worker or a livestock farm worker. Graduates gain the skills, knowledge, and attitude to operate equipment, perform maintenance on equipment, lead a team, haul or transport grains/ livestock, incorporate technology and industry trends, promote farm safety, and to focus on productivity and ethical land/animal practices. This program equips students with a comprehensive skill set and knowledge base that will enable them to thrive as competent and responsible farm workers in today’s dynamic agricultural landscape. From cultivating crops to managing livestock, students gain hands-on experience and theoretical insights that make them valuable assets to farming operations.

This program includes two extensive work terms where students will be working in the industry, a real-world environment to advance their learning and put their skills into practice. Students will be responsible for ensuring they are meeting the requirements of the work term as identified by the employer. The work terms may be paid terms.

VETERINARY TECHNOLOGY DIPLOMA

Northwestern Polytechnic’s Veterinary Technology program produces highly skilled and capable graduates. The program features a working on-site farm with a variety of both large and companion animals, providing students with hands-on experience treating and caring for live patients of all sizes. Students also have the opportunity to spend time in veterinary clinics and related veterinary facilities, in addition to completing rotations in the NWP on-site clinic and a six-week practicum at a facility within Canada. Graduates are eligible to write the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE) which is required to become registered as Veterinary Technologists in the province of Alberta.

Possible Careers: Registered veterinary technologists can work in a variety of settings, including veterinary clinics, zoos, shelters, wildlife parks, farms, and more.

For Lily Lierman, the Visual Arts and Design program at Northwestern Polytechnic offered more than creative inspiration. It opened doors to new techniques, mentorship, and community.

Drawn to the two-year diploma to expand her skillset and connect with other local artists, Lily found exactly what she was looking for - and more.

A defining moment came during her first semester while working on a clay sculpture, a medium she had never used before. With encouragement from her instructor and peers, she overcame her uncertainty and created an impressive piece that was later exhibited in the Beaverlodge Gallery.

“That project reminded me what’s possible when you push past your comfort zone,” says Lily.

Hands-on learning in sculpture, drawing, and digital design helped her build a

diverse, well-rounded portfolio. She also gained real-world design and communication experience through the Travelling Exhibition Program (TREX), collaboratively designing catalogues for two major exhibitions. But it was the supportive learning environment that stood out the most.

Lily credits her instructors for guiding her through the memorable creative journey. From refining her style to learning how to build a professional portfolio, price artwork, and pursue new opportunities with confidence, she valued the insightful feedback and support at every step.

“If I could describe my experience in one word, it would be growth,” says Lily. “Creatively, personally, and professionally.” Her journey included selling several pieces during the endof-year art show.

“That was a surreal moment,” she says. “It gave me confidence that this could really work out.”

Artistic inspiration can come from anywhere, but creative success starts at NWP. Visit NWP.me/ VisualArtsDesign
