Planned deficit of approximately $1.2 million
Number of trustees will expand from 5 to 7
At the June 27, 2017 Special Board Meeting Trustees passed a budget with a planned deficit of approximately $1.2 million for the 2017-2018 school year. The planned deficit will be offset by reserves used to support the second year of operations for Riverstone Public School and Isabel Campbell School and the first year of operation for Roy Bickell Public School.
The election for the Board of Trustees is Monday, October 16, 2017. The number of trustees will expand from 5 to 7 beginning at the start of the next term. The nomination deadline for interested parties is Monday, September 18th, 2017. Nominations come into the City of Grande Prairie City Hall between the hours of 10AM and Noon on that day.
Secretary-Treasurer Jeff Olson shared with Trustees that the budget development process was influenced by the need to address the cumulative effects of increased costs to the District due to inflation and the cumulative effect of no increases to base grant funding for the past few years. The 2017-2018 budget contains projected revenues of approximately $97.5 million and is focused on maximizing expenditures at the classroom level. Teacher staffing levels for the 2017-2018 school year are consistent relative to previous years and the budget reflects an increase over the previous budget in non-instructional staffing, which was a priority identified through the budget development process.

Board of Trustees election
Adopt the revised Policy 16
Student fees
The Board passed a motion to adopt the revised Policy 16- Student Fees to ensure compliance with the government’s Bill 1: An Act to Reduce School Fees. Bill 1 eliminated basic instructional fees for students in Alberta, beginning in September 2017, and clarified what fees may be charged by Districts. The revised policy details the fees GPPSD schools may charge parents next year, and includes Appendix A which details the Board approved fees for each school site. The revised policy will be submitted to the Minister of Education for review, and a process for reviewing the fee schedule for each school and consulting about school fees with parents will be developed in the fall.
