REGULAR BOARD MEETING Tuesday, June 27, 2017 06:00 p.m., Central Office
The Trustees were happy to announce that Tracy and Serge Allard have accepted their nomination by the Board of Trustees for the Alberta School Boards Association’s Friend of Education Award. This award recognizes individuals or organizations who are committed to improving education for Alberta students and who have made a significant contribution to education in Alberta. In our case, the Allard family has played a pivotal role as owners of the local Tim Horton’s franchise in supporting students in grade 6 from three of our schools (Avondale, Hillside and Swanavon) to attend the Tim Horton’s Camp each spring at Kananaskis Park. The Board nominee will move forward to stand for recognition at the Zone level.

NEWS & EVENTS
Provincial playground grant announcement
Alberta Education
The Government of Alberta provides free bussing for students who live 2.4 km away from their home school. Trustees approved funding Early Childhood Services (ECS) to grade 3 students who live more than 1.7 km away from their home school in order to provide them with free bussing. This results in more of our younger students qualifying for free bussing. The Trustees believe that this is good for these students and their parents and passed the motion unanimously.
GPPSD Mission and Guiding Principles update
Board Policy 1
June 13, 2017 Rachel Perry from Charles Spencer High School has been turning heads on the provincial and national volleyball scene.
The Board discussed the recent $250,000 Playground grant announcement that was shared by the Minister of Education. The Board has advocated for playgrounds being included in the new school construction process for years and are pleased to see this announcement. As a result, we have big news in that Roy Bickell Public School will have a playground in place in the fall. More details will be announced soon. Mrs. Perrott, the school principal, is working with students and parents to choose equipment.
The Board was committed to this work all year as this policy defines the desired culture that the Board wishes to see within the district. The Policy was officially adopted by the Board and will be posted on our external website: Click to see image. The image above illustrates the Board’s beliefs about the desired culture in GPPSD.
