BOARD CHAIR REPORT Social Media and effects on our Children Trustee Lynn Driedger reviewed information with the Board on social media and its potential effects on our children. Social Media use can have a negative impact on the social development of children and youth. The trustees accepted her main points for information and then discussed the various measures including our Administrative Procedures re: the acceptable use of technology and have agreed to look more closely at this topic in a future meeting.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT Board Social update

the ThoughtExchange Engagement project and purpose. The invitation to students, staff and parents was sent out on Monday, February 12th. Superintendent McDonald also noted that a focused approach to also seek community feedback from local organizations and Boards that are partners with the District.

Supporting Teacher in Teaching Sexual Education Superintendent McDonald shared that Nicole Aebly, GPPSD, and Michelle Dechaine, Peace Collaborative Services will be presenting a Northwest Regional Learning Consortium sponsored professional learning session for teachers in our Zone on How to Deliver the Human Sexuality Curriculum and to learn more about how to support youth across the gender spectrum. This session is organized through work by the consortium, and Angela DesBarres, Kim Frykas, and Chris Farquharson, from the GPPSD leadership team.

The Board Social has been booked for October 13, 2018. The Board hopes to see another full house at the social event of the year. The Social will occur at the Entrec Centre at Evergreen Park again as a result of the positive survey results submitted by staff this past October.

International Field Trip Request Superintendent McDonald provided information on a request for an international field trip for the French and Spanish classroom students from Charles Spencer High School. The trip is planned for France, Spain and one day in Morocco in Spring 2019. The Board discussed the opportunity as an excellent way for students to learn more about other cultures and countries. The Board then went on to approve the trip in principle subject to updated review of the travel conditions prior to the trip date, as per Administrative Procedure 260.
