A Word From GPB President and Chief Revenue Officer Bert Wesley Huffman
Hello friend,
It’s been an interesting two years at GPB and around the world. This global pandemic has seemingly had the power to slow down the clock at times and wind it up to warp speed at others. And then there are those inexplicable moments that seem to go fast and slow simultaneously. That’s really how I feel about this time of year. In some ways the world slows down a bit to focus on generosity of spirit, but also time slips through our fingers as we scramble to make deadlines, fulfill party invites and feed the country’s economic engine through gift-giving. And gifts matter. They really do. Gifts are an expression of our fondness, our appreciation and our love.
A gift to GPB is no different. Those dollars are put to work so beautifully day after day here in the form of content, both locally and nationally. In fact, a gift to GPB really does keep on giving the whole year though. Ongoing news coverage of our state, our country and our world would literally be impossible without your gift of support. Hours and hours of educational children’s programming, enlightening conversations about Georgia’s ever-changing landscape, thought-provoking storytelling that holds you in your car long after you’ve arrived in your garage at home – these are fine examples of what GPB can do with your gift. We have reached our Season of Giving here at GPB, and we do ask that as you think about the organizations that matter to you during this time of year please consider GPB. Your investment goes a long way toward fulfilling a mission of service to all of Georgia and beyond! HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
Now, moving on to this issue of GPB Next – I see it as our gift to you! This month on GPB TV is packed with local GPB productions. From Rich’s Remembered, a GPB original detailing one of Georgia’s most beloved holiday treasures to another in The Legend Lives On: Atlanta’s Fox Theatre, there is no shortage of nostalgia. And it wouldn’t be December on GPB without the Spelman Christmas Concert (this year their 95th) and the ever-popular GHSA High School Football Championships. From PBS we’ll bring you delightful dramas such as Mansfield Park and a Call the Midwife Holiday Special and thought-provoking nonfiction such as The Roosevelts: An Intimate History, In Their Own Words: Angela Merkel and Earth Emergency. And an absolute don’t miss on my list is Mary Berry’s Country House at Christmas – heartwarming television for even the grinchiest among us!
On the subject of GPB Radio you’ll hear about the new host of Here & Now and we delve into the triumphant return of The Metropolitan Opera to GPB’s airwaves! On the education front, you’ll learn about our upcoming new podcast Classroom Conversations.
And finally, there are a couple of very unique opportunities for us to spend some quality time together – if you’re a foodie I hope you’ll consider joining me for a virtual evening with Milk Street Kitchen’s Education Director to learn all about spices and their uses. Or if the travel bug has you, maybe you’ll be interested in a very unique opportunity to join me on a seven-day tour of England. You can read more about that on page 9.
Warmly,
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY FOR GPB SUSTAINERS
Virtual Cooking Class with Rosemary Gill
Director of Education at Milk Street
As we prepare for winter holiday celebrations, many of us are spending time in the kitchen putting together tasty treats and family favorite recipes. GPB is here for you with great cooking shows demonstrating techniques and sharing tips that you can incorporate into your own cooking and baking. You can enjoy shows like Milk Street, America’s Test Kitchen, The Great British Baking Show and more on GPB every Saturday or stream these programs and more on-demand anytime on GPB Passport!
We are pleased to partner with Christopher Kimball’s Milk Street for a special virtual cooking class, just in time to spice up your holiday dishes! Milk Street Director of Education, Rosemary Gill, will share her approach to blending spices, using ground and whole spices, and explain the difference between toasting and blooming. Attendees will even have the option to cook along with Rosemary as she prepares a tasty dish.
