Central Region Elementary School #22 is a new K-5 elementary school for the Los Angeles Unified School District. It will accommodate 650 students in 26 classrooms on a four-acre site. The site, which is masterplanned for future expansion to 950 students in a K-8 school configuration, presented a unique challenge to the design team that required an innovative approach to planning.The first phase of the school must accommodate access to jointly used adjacent parcels: a nature center to the west and a community park to the east. As one of LAUSD’s first schools to be certified by the USGBC, the design incorporates a strong array of sustainable building practices, and is anticipated to generate 60% of its own energy. Rooftop equipment is eliminated in favor of a geothermal heat exchange system that takes advantage of the earth’s thermal mass to heat and cool the buildings. The use of traditional roof package units is minimized. In turn, the uncluttered roof enables a large area for photovoltaic panels. Panels extend past the roof line to be perceived by students and operate as a teaching tool. Further, the landscape is a strong part of this flexible learning environment, striated into “learning landscape” zones: vegetable gardens, meeting areas, outdoor classrooms, and water zones. The school is both CHPS certified at 46 points and will achieve LEED Gold status.
The project will be considered as a teacher training site in collaboration with Loyola Marymount University. With the Playa Vista development team, local stakeholders, Loyola Marymount University, Friends of Ballona Creek and many other stakeholder groups, this project has been an exercise in planning with comprehensive outreach.
