s we enter yet another year of turmoil and seeming chaos brought about by a rapidlywarming, rapidly-tilting planet, MindField once again offers an oasis of reason, thought, talk, performance and joyous exaltation in all that’s good about the world.

We have a brand new podcast stage called Ah, Hear! which will host favourites such as the Blindboy Podcast, Soundings and Jarlath Regan’s An Irishman Abroad with special guest, comedian Russell Howard as well as a selection from the Headstuff Podcast Network, including The Alison Spittle Show, Phoning it In, Sexy Beasts and What Am Politics?

MANIFESTO There’s a whole new world in the new Manifesto writing and ideas stage which features poet and broadcaster, Lemn Sissay in conversation with Michael Harding; and Other Voices with Philip King and guest; and readings from 100 Poems, a new collection selected Seamus Heaney’s family, presented by Catherine Heaney with special guest readers.

There’s New to the Parish hosted

by Sorcha Pollak, based on her series with The Irish Times on new arrivals to Ireland featuring chats and music with Zeenie Summers, Mabel Chah and Carlinhos Cruz from Nigeria, Cameroon and Brazil respectively, joined by theatre maker Oonagh Murphy who’ll share her insights into working with people living in direct provision.

Also featuring in Manifesto are International Dublin Literary Awardwinner Mike McCormack who’ll read from his novel Solar Bones; former political prisoner Ibrahim Halawa in conversation with Shona Murray, special correspondent with the Irish Independent; and legendary TV comedy producer, John Lloyd

There’s also an intriguing new format called Stray Lines which features live readings of graphic novels and comics with visuals and sound effects by some of Ireland’s finest, including Debbie Jenkinson, Paddy Lynch, Katherine Foyle, Sarah Bowie and Alan Dunne.

Kicking off the stage on Friday evening is Northern Ireland: Cue The Music hosted by Eamon McCann, a conversation about growing up in music in Northern Ireland with Ash lead singer, Tim Wheeler; and singer and actor, Bronagh Gallagher.

THEATRE STAGE Visceral, voyeuristic interactions unfold on this year’s Theatre Stage at Electric Picnic. In association with Dublin Theatre Festival, Mindfield’s 2018 programme brings back renowned artists’ work, such as Malaprop’s Love +, as well Thisispobbaby’s Not a Funny Word.

Bursting across the stage world are unwanted memories of wild, messy nights and bad decisions in Finbarr O’Doyle and Jeda de Brí’s play TYRST. While the Breadline Collective’s Say Nothin’ to no one hones in on the yearning we young folk have to escape. Back from its international tour in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe comes Pan Narran’s and PrimeCut’s co-production of My Left Nut, while Xnthony and Mark T. Cox reunite for an explosive cabaret performance.

Fears, fantasies, and potential futures collide in this year’s creative space.

Now almost forgotten, it was front-page news in Ireland at the time due to the substantial Irish missionary presence and the huge public response to the humanitarian holocaust it provoked. But what was the war about?

How was it represented in Ireland at the time? What are its consequences today? WATERFORD WHISPERS NEWS With headlines like ‘Jesus not coming back by the looks of it, admits Vatican’ and ‘Emergency services called after Kim Kardashian becomes wedged in the Ailwee Caves’, Waterford Whispers News is everyone’s favourite dose of daily satire.

The website boasts 14mn readers every year, and has recently been announced as Ireland’s most engaged publisher on social media, obliterating all the alleged “real news” publications in Ireland.

This is a short preview of a new live show which opens in October at Vicar Street and brings that same writing quality to a Sky News style setup, with screens, actors, and consistently brilliant stories that are somehow more real than the real news. ILLUMINATE Blindboy Boatclub hosts this intriguing and illuminating format which sees some of our top creatives and artists present a short slide show of their work.

You get to see artistic influences, collaborations, processes and guilty pleasures and more and understand what it’s like to work as part of a creative community, followed by a panel chat about all the themes emerging from the images.

he Word Stage returns again this year with a jam packed to the rafters eclectic mix of spoken word, storytelling, poetry, cutting edge comedy and theatre, rap, funk and rock n’ roll.

UK rapper Finn Detax will be strutting his stuff on Friday, while The Word Up Collective will be bringing all kinds of cool to the stage on Saturday and Sunday featuring some of the top rappers and spoken word artists on the Irish scene, expect blistering sets from Outsider YP, Jay Ronic and Tommy G.

The Word Stage will also be getting deep down and funky on Saturday night when Bobby and The Blunts and Backroad Smokers Club do their thang onstage.

Friday night is rock and rap night, with heavyweights Megacone and Reprisal rocking the shop.

During the day we will be easing the hangovers with some storytelling, poetry and comedy, building up to dulcet tones from the likes of Oscar Mild, Con Murphy and Distant Sons.

Sunday night we close up The Word Stage with a rip roaring high octane Trad set from Ruaile Buaile, then we’re all off to see The Prodigy.

AMNESTY HOUR: WOMEN HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS TRANSFORMING IRELAND Roisin Ingle, Irish journalist and author will chair the discussion.

A

s part of Amnesty’s ‘Brave’ campaign, Amnesty Hour is celebrating and recognising the impact women human rights defenders make here in Ireland, such as repealing the Eighth amendment, gaining legal gender recognition for transgender people, ensuring the Irish state recognises Traveller ethnicity, and achieving marriage equality.

Amnesty is joined by four inspiring women, Eileen Flynn, Sara Philips, Lucy Watmough and Roisin Ingle, who have spoken out for human rights, and through their work have transformed - and continue to transform - Ireland.

But defending human rights is not easy! Women and LGBTI activists are at the forefront of the battle for human rights and they face multiple levels of discrimination and violence, including sexual violence, threats, intimidation and harassment. We will delve into the personal consequences, barriers and obstacles of speaking out for human rights in Ireland, and what it means to challenge historical injustices that many thought could never be spoken about, let alone overcome.

Their struggles have often broken new ground and they have turned Ireland into a beacon of hope and inspiration for activists around the world.

Eileen Flynn is an Irish Traveller woman and recently finished doing a BA in Community and Youth work in Maynooth University. She is currently a community development worker and has been actively engaged in her community from a young age.

Eileen has experienced inequality of access and opportunity throughout her life and has come through by learning that education is the key to success and change. She enjoys supporting others to challenge inequality and travel alongside them on their journey to personal success.

Sara Philips has been involved with the trans community for over 20 years and has been a member of TENI since its inception in 2006.

Sara is now in her second term as Chair having originally been appointed to the position in November 2012. For over four years Sara was the facilitator of the Dublin Trans Peer Support Group and is still a member of its steering committee.

Lucy Watmough told her abortion story because she wanted to help secure a ‘yes’ vote in the May 25th referendum to Repeal the 8th. Despite experiencing online backlash, she continued to speak out about how being forced to travel for an abortion impacted her personally. She has told her story in partnership with the Repeal project and with Amnesty International Ireland (25 annoying things about being pregnant and as part of the It’s Time. Vote yes. video series).

Róisín Ingle is Deputy Features Editor of The Irish Times, co-producer of the Irish Times Women’s Podcast and presenter of ‘Roisin Meets’ podcast. Róisín has written three books, the latest is a collection of her columns ‘Public Displays of Emotion’.

She has written and spoken powerfully about her lived experience of the Eighth Amendment and the harm it caused. She lives in Dublin with her partner and twin daughters.

Kicking All The Boxes is the story of Naoise Murphy, a one time champion kickboxer. We meet Naoise on her 15th birthday as she returns from winning a European kickboxing title, we then get propelled into seeing Naoise 15 years later on her 30th birthday. As the piece progresses we are taken along 3 paths of the person she may become.

Reminiscent of a theatrical “Sliding Doors”. Kicking all the boxes examines decisions and consequences and the impact they can have on the journey a life can take. It holds a mirror up to a whole generation of 20 and 30 something women and asks what do you do when life no longer parties with you but instead looms large with the big questions? Do you batter it into submission until, kicking and screaming, it stops asking what you have to show for yourself?

Developed with world renowned performer and theatre maker Mikel Murfi, the show is an explosive, physical, gut-busting (and utterly fabricated!) story like no other.

n Puball Gaeilge will be the perfect place to reinvigorate your interest and hope for the future of our national yet minoritised language. Over the weekend, you will get to witness the upcoming cream of talent in the Irish language performance scene. Two plays, one magic show, three comedians, one podcast, two poets and six Ted Talks, the GAA Football finals on Sunday, a story telling bus and 34 singers, rappers and their bands in the five slots allotted for them.

Friday’s Siamsa Raidió Na Life will concentrate on Dublin based bands who’ve been performing on the radio station over the years.

Make sure to check out Oki Bravo, Nocturnes, Exiles, Cult Called Man, Three Underneath and Bruadar performing as Gaeilge at the Picnic, Saturday’s Iarnóin le Ceol will see two Carlovians, Eric de Buitléir, sing Jazz standards as Gaeilge and Tadhg Ó Griffín’s nine-piece pop band. This will be followed by guitar and harp duo Aniar sa Cheol, poetry and bodhrán with Dairena Ní Chinéide and Ronán Ó Snodaigh, barbershop quartet The Sandmen, and bluegrass band Mules and Men. Later in the evening Rónán Mac Aodh Bhuí’s Caberet Craiceálta will stage the likes of the wonderfully weird Thatchers of The Acropolis, rappers Jack, Oisín and Kneecap, along with folk singers and trad performers Emma Ní Fhíoruisce, Bernie Pháid, dbize, Manglam PI and Vigilante.

On Saturday and Sunday you can visit Fíbín’s Story Telling Bus and after the Game on Sunday the newbies will get the first shot on the Puball Gaeilge stage and then Raidió Fáilte will present their choice of bands, do try to catch Ulcabhán, Na Hot Toddies, Éiriú, Lás, Ár Scéal, and Éiriú.
