Publications is open to any Area I student that wishes to showcase the extraordinary people and once-in-a-lifetime experiences at Governor's School West. Run by Communications Coordinator, Kirby Scotton, students have the choice between writing for the weekly GWS Seminar's In Review Newsletter, producing the layout for the annual SummerBook, interviewing students for the GSW Shorts Instagram account (@GSWshorts), or hosting the original GSW podcast! Where do I start? In February when I decided to apply for a position at Governor’s School, I never dreamed in a million years it would turn out this way. After all, as we all learned in the Imposter Syndrome Seminar I don’t see myself as a professional, I’m an English teacher with a hobby. But the way the Greensboro College campus and Governor’s School community opened up for me, it immediately felt like home.
To my publication students, lovingly nicknamed the Kirbinator’s by GSW staff, you were so much more than I could have imagined. I am so honored that I was given the opportunity to work with such incredible students.
To the GSW Seminar in Review students: Sean, Owen, Amara, Jordan, Lena, Leo, Neehar, Tofarati, Sadie and Sahaana - you have blown me away with your self-motivation, drive and professionalism. In three weeks, we have produced so much content, and I have heard from everyone on staff just how amazing you all are at your jobs. You have been such a pleasure and joy to work with and it has been an experience I’ll cherish.
To the GSW Podcast students: Cajah, Evangeline, Jordan, Citlalli and Zach - We put on a PODCAST! Well, I shouldn’t say we because YOU put on a Podcast! From writing the interview questions, booking the “talent” and producing the pieces, you all did something that I think very few rising High School seniors can say they’ve done. I am thrilled and can’t wait to listen to them over and over again. Special thanks to Greensboro College’s own rockstar, AJ Schroeder, for the support.
To the GSW Shorts students: Cashier, Joanna, Inaaya, Isabella and Sofia - I remember during our first meeting when you came to me with the idea of @GSWshorts and I asked why you wanted to create it. Cash said “to spread positivity and share what an amazing experience this is going to be.” I knew then that you all had a light that was going to shine across campus and it did. I am so incredibly proud of the hard working, talented, positive influencers you have been across the last four weeks.
To the Summer Book staff: Avani, Isabella, and Inaaya - I can not thank you all enough for the hard work you put into the Summer Book. It is far more beautiful than anything I could have ever created on my own and I’m so impressed with all of you. Your creativity and vision inspires me, and I am so grateful to have been able to work with you all.
Special thanks to Sean, Cashier, Cajah and Avani for organizing the smaller projects. I knew from the very beginning they were in good hands.
Thank you to Eva for the amazing piece on the history of Governor’s School and Greensboro College. Thank you Henry for all of the amazing pictures. I couldn’t be everywhere at once and you were such a blessing. You’re so talented; never stop taking pictures.
I hope that there is not anyone I have not named, but if there is just know I love you dearly and will always be rooting for you. Governor’s School West 2024, I am, quite literally, your biggest fan. Thank you for making my summer a memorable one.
