1. SHOPPING in UKRAINE: Where to Buy? What to Say? How Much to Pay?  WHY TO SHOP IN UKRAINE? Cheap and Quality Cheaper: Prices in Ukraine are, in general, lower than in Europe and U.S. Unfortunately, Ukraine is one of the poorest countries in Europe and to ensure that someone buys their goods, the manufacturers often have special price ranges for Ukraine. Quality: Many clothes are manufactured locally or nearby in Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia, which have good production base and highly skilled workforce. At the same time, costs of manufacturing are lower than in Europe and the U.S. and, therefore, lower prices. Shopping Mall alternatives: There are still many open-air markets that sell same clothes cheaper than big downtown stores/shopping malls.  HOW TO SHOP IN UKRAINE? What to Say in Ukrainian (UA) or Russian (RU) languages  Instructions: Try Ukrainian language first (see below: UA). If they don't understand, try Russian language (see below: RU). Key words are written here in CAPITAL letters.  Ukrainians use Cyrillic (more at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyrillic_script ), but your computer may not show Cyrillic characters. Therefore, below words are written with English letters, exactly as they are pronounced in Ukrainian (see below: UA) or Russian languages (see below: RU).  Hi, I want to BUY THIS [pointing]  UA: Vitaiu! Ya hochu KUPITI TSE [pointing]  RU: Zdrasvuite! Ya hochu KUPIT ETO [pointing]  HOW MUCH does THIS [pointing] COST?  UA: SKILKI TSE [pointing] KOSHTUIE?  RU: SKOLKO ETO [pointing] STOIT?  Can I PAY in HRYVNA? ("hryvna" (UAH) is the Ukrainian currency)  UA:Ya mozu SPLATITI HRIVNOI?  RU: Ya mogu PLATIT GRIVNOI?  Thank you!  UA:Diakuiu!  RU: Spasibo!

o POSSIBLE REPLIES  Ok  UA: D o b r e  RU: H o r o s h o  Sorry!  UA: V i b a c h t e !  RU: I z v i n i t e !  I don't speak English.  UA: Y a n e g o v o r i u a n g l i i s k o i u .  RU: Y a n e g o v o r i u p o - a n g l i i s k i .  Good buy!  UA: D o p o b a c h e n n i a !  RU: D o s v i d a n i a ! PRICES: average approximate On the positive side, cost of living in Ukraine is still lower than in Europe and the U.S. Prices in Ukraine depend on petrol/gasoline prices, which determine delivery costs.  http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living , select: "Ukraine"

SHOPS vs. OPEN-AIR CLOTHES MARKETS vs. INTERNET SHOPPING 

OPEN-AIR MARKETS used to be 5-10% cheaper than shops. Now, as a rule, prices are the same, but at markets you may negotiate the price with a vendor or look for a bargain. Some open-air markets are still cheaper but, reportedly, quality of goods may be inferior.  As a rule, there are no cash registers at Open-air markets. And so you may not be able to return what you’ve bought there. Usually, a cash register's receipt ("fiscal check") or a “merchandise check” issued by sellers allows you to return purchases in shops/stores.  INTERNET SHOPPING (e-shops) is mostly for electronics, computers and appliances. As a rule, prices are lower than in “physical” hardware shops. E-shops usually provide with manufacturer’s warrantee and, do free in-town delivery of any purchase, however small/cheap it is. CLOTHING and FOOTWEAR: size conversion; world-famous brands; Ukrainian designer clothes o SIZE CONVERSION Sizes of clothing/footwear are different in Ukraine from these in Europe or the U.S. “International size system”: Small (S), Medium (M), Large (L) are widely used in Ukraine but, sometimes, if you are looking for inexpensive Ukraine, Russia, Belarus (Ukraine’s neighboring countries)-made clothing/shoes you will need to convert sizes as in conversion tables below. Mostly in private businesses, when applying for a job a man may explicitly be given preference, because of possible maternity and childcare-related issues if a woman is hired.  TRADITIONAL HOUSEHOLD ROLES  Traditional roles where women do cooking and cleaning and men earn most of income gradually disappear, with younger generations sharing their roles more equally.  In Soviet days, there were only a few restaurants, eating out was quite expensive, inviting guests to someone’s home or on a picnic was considered the only option to pass time together. Now more and more people prefer to meet in restaurants/coffee shops.  MEN – WOMEN COURTESY  Men are expected to open and hold doors, give way, and yield a seat, give a hand. It is common and not-doing this is considered rude.  SURVEY: UKRAINIAN MEN HAPPIER THAN WOMEN IN 2012  April 30, 2012 (Interfax-Ukraine) – February 2012 survey by Kyiv International Institute of Sociology: “Men are generally happier than women: among men, the percentage of those happy is 54%, and among women – 51%. Ukrainians in 2012 are less happy then in 2011: 63% in 2011 and 51% in 2012. Ukrainians link the level of happiness to their financial.” o CHILDREN in the family  A child is, in general, a focal point of the family. Ukrainians are famous for their adoration of children.  There is, in general, NO "We want a boy rather than a girl!" preference among future parents.  Day-care rooms/playground for shoppers' children are plenty in big shopping malls/centers.  Grand parents usually stay together with their children’s families – in sometimes very small flats/apartments - to take care of children while parents are away. o FEMINISM, UKRAINE IS FEMININE  “FEMEN Movement: Human Rights Protection Group Pressure Group” – known for flamboyant females protesting around the world - started in Ukraine:  A word "Ukraine" is feminine in Ukrainian language.  Unlike in many languages "fatherland", Ukraine is referred to by the Ukrainians as "motherland   d".  Princess Olha is Ukraine's patron saint:
